Do any of you REALLY want a metal/aluminum Galaxy?? - Galaxy S 5 General

Since the heyday with android phones, vs the Gphone(g stands for girl) everyone use to rave about how a metal housing was so awesome and now a days many reviews about the GS5 is about how they are disappointed with the phone still having a plastic housing.
I don't want metal, if this was 1960, people would be in awe with plastics. Plastic is durable, doesn't dent, holds up to decent abuse, is flexible and honestly IMO its got a great feel. Much better then some cold metal feeling.
Also, one of the biggest things. Removable battery and expandable memory! I don't know of any metal phones that have a removable battery and I pray to god that the future Galaxies don't fall victim to BS. Not only does this phone have a removable battery and storage expansion, but it can withstand water! that IMO is innovative! Look at the HTC ONE 8, or the Gphone, all metal, sealed battery (Retarded IMO, with a device like this.. Imagine having a point and shoot camera with no option to change the battery out) and they can't withstand water.
Finally, all these people that swear the metal housing phones are the best, they all slap plastic cases on top of them anyway!
I just hope Samsung stay true to the removable battery phone, its IMO why I stick with them and will continue to!

Is this a question or a rant?

Nope. I'm coming from a long line of iPhones and sure it feels nice...but it damages too easily. All of my previous iPhones are damaged in some way or another. Not to mention, the majority of those raving about the metal body slap a case on it anyways, so there goes the "look and feel" argument they love to use.

So, what are you hoping to achieve with this thread?

I could care less about metal or plastic, I care about UI and features plus battery life. I'm not a diva or a hipster.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk

To me it depends on overall quality of the device. If I can get a water resistant device and have it feel good in the hand, which imo the S5 does, then I'm for it.
I was really hoping there was going to be a super high end S5 variant with a 2k screen 3gbs of ram ect, which prolly would have had a metal finish. Hope there still will be then I'll go from there. But the features of a given phone sell me not the overall make of it so much, though that does play a part.

I think k we all agree with you. Yes a build of a phone is great, I don't wanna end up with a square phone lol. But at the end of the day I rather have the thinness and lightweight of the S5 plus its So much more ergonomic. Throw in the removable back and water resistance and I cannot complain.
I think this plastic thing is made by ppl who want to bash Samsung just cause they don't like them. Cheap plastic blah blah blah. So many things we use in our lives are made of plastic or have plastic in them.

I don't. I think my last phone that had a metal finish was the HTC HD 2 and it was heavy and got easily scratched.

Yep.. Look at most tv's, bezel is plastic.. Shoot, look at our cars, no longer do we have the big ugly METAL bumpers, they are an ergonomic PLASTIC. again, IMO plastic is the way to go, and there are levels of plastic, I like this ribbed back on the S5, its ribbed for MY pleasure for once

I would prefer it was metal as it IMO feels more premium. However if it meant sacrificing removable battery then not.
I never put my phone in a case, just take care of it. My i5s, HTC one never got scratched up.

I have no issues with plastic. There are many types of plastics, strong/flexible/light. You can mix and match whatever you want with plastics.
I don't see how metal is "premium".

I thought I wanted metal, because I could flex and listen to my S4 creek and crack with a tiny bit of pressure and flexing. The S5 is a lot sturdier, feels a lot more solid and doesn't flex one bit.

Metal bezel and scratches

The Nexus 4 is very likely to be my next phone, replacing my old HTC Desire. Anyway, I have one big concern about the new Nexus.
I have had a LG Device once. It also had a silver-shiny bezel, just like the nexus 4. And exactly this bezel attracted scratches like a magnet. You could barely look at it without producing a scratch. It was kind of like the backside of the old iPod touches (if you know what I mean).
Sounds weird, but this is my biggest concern about the phone till yet. I don't want to have a phone which is scratched all over immediately...
Just my thoughts, anyway....
Seriously?
seriously.Probably sounds a bit crazy, but I have had a really worse experience with this. The mentioned older LG device with the metal bezel looked really awfull after few weeks of usage (and I really took care of where I put it etc.)....like it's been used for a few years already...

don't think that'd work out for the front of the device...but even if, I'm not a fan of cases at all, why should I buy a many-hundreds-of-dollars/euros-device and than put it into a case for a few dollars/euros? My old phone survived my jeans also pretty well, the screen hasn't any spotable scratch - and it isn't even gorilla glass or anything comparable...
Perfect example of one of the many things duct-tape can fix.
I have no idea how easily the Nexus 4 will scratch. Guess we'll find out.
I don't think its metal, looks like plastic with chrome paint, but yes if metal it can get dings like the iPhone5.
I've also read that it's a rubbery feeling plastic which doesn't seem like it's scratch too easily.

platic with that chrome paint thing is even worse, it's just like butter. Metal is far better in that kind of stuff, the Desire's frame is some kind of painted metal, too. Got 2 noticable scratches in there, though, but that's not too bad for like 2 and a half years of daily usage with no case...

Yeah, I don't like the chrome ring either. My old Vibrant had it and it looked terrible after a couple of months. The paint started to chip and made the phone look really old. Plus it's kind of an outdated design cue. The N4 would have looked much more sleek without it.
Even in Google's promo shots the ring looks black, not silver. Looks much nicer, IMO.

I'm not a fan of the tacky fake chrome, but I'll probably just get a case/bumper for it anyway.
Wait to see how it is constructed, I normally just let my phones get scratched on their cases and then when come to selling just buy the parts and replace them, it's always as cheap as buying cases.
Bump for awareness. Someone please reply if you know about the quality/material/durability of the bezel. The strange thing is that they designed the bezel like that, to make sure the screen is safe, when put down. One would think that they made it out of a durable material/finish.
Edit: I'm quite sure that it's impossible to replace parts, when damaged. Since the battery door is sealed, I reckon you're f****d when you drop your phone and the bezel gets scratched up. This could be an issue to me, for sure.

It looks like the back cover is held on only with two screws. Standard screws not some proprietary kind. So in theory (without actually having a device to work with) it should be possible to easily replace the back cover assuming you found a new one. The back cover on this phone has all sorts of circuitry built into it so it might be quite difficult to find a new one.
It is also possible that the warranty sticker is on the bottom of that back cover, so when you take it off you rip off the warranty sticker. We will have to wait for a teardown to see if this is the case.

Metal frame design change

Here's the deal, I had an iPhone 3gs long time ago. That shiny metal frame around the screen was just not for me. I tought : "Why not brush this thing up?" I asked my friend Google (maybe in 2009) and did it. Just amazing.
What do you guys think about doing that on the nexus 4 ?
file it down to black maybe.. mines already dented.. looks really ugly! unless i paint it 0.0
If you want to, go for it. I'm also one of those that took some sandpaper to the chrome bezel because I also thought it was always scuffed pretty bad after normal use, and after doing that it looked awesome. Also helped with the resale value back when I got my first android device (Infuse 4G).
Main thing about the N4 though, to its benefit the shiny trim is a dark chrome, which imo looks right, plus mine is covered up by my case for the time I had it thus far and she hasn't got beat up too bad yet.
I say go for it, if it looks sweet, you'll probably be the founder of this technique and have a bunch of people follow. If not, it'll still be unique.

That's what people use as an alternative to protect their trucks bed instead of the plastic liner. Its what I got in mine(different brand). I've seen a truck had the whole paint job done with it... looks closer to a slight textured matte finish. The phone in that link was crap. If you do want something like this on your phone, look for the ones than have less texture/clumps. Speedliner is smoother and they also sell spray cans of that stuff at the auto parts store.

[Q] Future damage on HTC One

I can't decide between the HTC One and the GS4 for one reason only: body damage. All the reviews so far have been about the usual stuff, but no one mentions what possibly could happen in the future. Now, all my previous phones have been plastic, and the scratches and damages have been minimal. But I was just wondering, with the metal and all, how badly it would get affected? Would the body degrade after a year?
Some reports say that the S4 is worse than the One or Iphone 5 in terms of durability. But i want to hear from the users themselves what the reality is.
P.S: I won't use a case, because i'm not about to buy a good phone and ruin its looks with a case.
Appreciate your honest feedback!

Nexus 4 Back Glass Replacement with Mahogany Veneer

The back glass on my Nexus 4 broke some weeks back. Short term I placed a large sticker over it knowing that I wanted to eventually do something more permanent.
Over the weekend I cracked out the glass, then cut/shaped a Mahogany veneer back replacement. In total I made 4 backs because the first 3 failed in one way or another... The one I finally installed is not perfect, but my time was running out...
Time lapse of the process... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJyJMAYHteI
Enjoy, and let me know if you have any questions.
It's a little rough looking but I think the wood back is fantastic and would love to do that but i'm not sure of the science behind it. For instance, glass absorbs heat from the device.

Yes, the glass would likely be a better heat sink/transfer than this wood will be. I suppose I will have to watch that.
It is a little rough yes... in my defense this is the first time I have worked with veneer in this way. My skills and tools set have been found to be a little lacking...
I am thinking about what it would take to have one laser-cut.... (fells like cheating though... )

I didn't measure the glass, but I did measure the inset where the glass sat, it came out to .02" thick.
The veneer I used started at .04" thick after a little sanding a few coats of spar urethane it is /just/ taller than the inset.
Another point of interest I forgot to put in the original post...
I moved the flash cover over the camera and left the flash led exposed... I figured the camera needed the protection more than the flash did... So far I have not seen any real degradation in quality of photos...

I have seen reports of the CPU reaching 106 deg F. Certainly not enough to catch fire to the wood, but possibly enough to discolor it. As stated earlier the wood will not transfer the heat the way the glass would. However, I don't figure that wood is any worse than the plastic backs you find on most other phones...
Could you just use one of those instead and use glue to fix it? I don't know what it looks like under the glass.

I think those are designed to sit on top of the glass... nice looking but I doubt they are thick enough to replace the glass.

S5 Owners - Did you consider the M8 at all?

Hello Everyone,
As the title states, I'm curious as to what you all have to say about it. I recently went with the M8 but I'm not sure if I made the right decision.
There's something about the M8 that just doesn't feel right. I think it's the height. It's kinda awkward to hold.
Anyway, what do you all think? What made you go with the S5? Should I return the M8 and get the S5??
They're both great phones. Stop worrying and enjoy your phone. I choosed S5 coming from S4 and S2 before that. It all depends on your personality, if you care about metal case and / or superb front speakers, you made the right decision. If you want removable battery, water and dust proof, then you better switch.

Understandable. How's your battery life been? The M8 had better life than my Note 3 so far.
I want the best build quality on a phone and the htc one can't hold a candle to the gs5. So no, no htc for me lol.

I did consider it before it was released, but the moment I heard it kept the sh1tty 4mp camera it was out of the question.

Yeah the camera is cool but it isn't very good when I compared it to the GS5 when I was at best buy.
I owned the M8 for 5 days before I got my S5. The M8 looks nice if you're not using it. Then when you start using it you realize how ridiculous the bezels are, how tall it is, how heavy it is, how cumbersome it is to hold, how slippery it is, how fragile it is, etc.
Then when you use it more you realize how mediocre the camera is and how mind numbingly boring Sense is.
So in my opinion, make the switch lol.

Whoa whoa, hold on a second. Are you saying the GS5 had better build quality than the M8? Cause that ain't true lol
Seriously considered M8 and then was forced to "consider" it again for 5 minutes in store. The 4MP camera was a deal braker for me.
I want a phone to replace my aging S2, which takes great pictures but sometimes there is just not enough pixels to give you the details (especially since there's no zoom). A 4MP camera is so 2008.
Also I don't mind the plastic at all. I would even go so far to call it a feature. There are all kinds of dents on my Mac Book Air's alumium body while my old Thinkpad looks as good as new. I am going to put a bumper on my S5 anyways, plastic or not makes no difference to me.
I must also say replaceable battery is a must-have for me. When my S2 was at the end of its 2 year contract, the original battery was only giving me 3 hours of life. The two "genuine" replacments I got from Amazon(!) have both swollen and giving between 5-8 hours of live. I cannot imagine how I would get through these two years without three batteries to rotate.
Also with Samsung TVs and blu-ray players, I am more or less locked into the ecosystem...

Yes, it is true. Polycarbonate is more durable and resilient than aluminum. Fact.
Drop a M8 and S5 straight on their back and let me know which one has more damage. Also, look on Swappa, eBay, Craigslist, etc and look at how almost every M7 being sold has damage. Dings in the aluminium, scratches, etc. Then search for S4's and tell me what you see.
In short, yes, the S5 has better build quality than the M8. If you want to talk about design or aesthetics, then that's a different story. But build quality isn't the same thing which is maybe where you are confused?

I see what you are saying. I guess I don't consider durability = build quality? Idk when I think of build quality I think of how well it feels and how solidly it is constructed.
But yes, if we are thinking of it as which is more durable, then yes definitely the S5 wins there. This is what is making me consider it even more. I constantly feel like I am going to drop my M8 and am nervous that it'll break.

So are you saying your one can be dropped from a second story onto concrete and still work? How about in the washing machine for an hour? Or in boiling water for like 5 mins. How about driven over by a car? Please... lets be real here.
Well I'm on the M8 switched from the S4. I am thinking of exchanging this for the s5 but I don't think any stores have one in black I hope they get some in stock before the 14 days run out. I do like the m8 it's VERY smooth but the real estate the buttons take away is huge to me. Also the m8 is pretty heavy and the aluminum will get abused pretty easily and I don't like cases. Who else is or was in my situation? I also want the better camera as I sell a lot on eBay.
I glanced at the M8, but never even considered it. I want a removeable battery, the fingerprint scanner. I don't need a metal phone, since mine will always go in a case.
I looked at the M8, played with it quite a bit, but that thing is ridiculously heavy, hate that huge bezel at the bottom, hate aluminium since it's so easy to scratch, no removable battery, no fingerprint scanner, not water/dust proof, horrible camera and Sense is a joke
Grabbed a Galaxy S5 instead. I love the fact that it's made of plastic. By no meas it feels cheep. It's a SOLID phone, very durable and still has a removable battery. Not to mention how light it is. I couldn't be happier. BTW, I had a GS4 before then.
The thing about both these phones, and the biggest argument I see is the camera. Just because the S5 has more megapixels doesn't mean anything. Take a picture in low lighting in example with both M8 and S5, see which does a better job, and which one takes a better picture in broad daylight. Each camera is made for specific strengths. The "bigger number, bigger performance" reason is downright the silliest thing ever imagined. For example, I smoke 5.0 mustangs and even 6.0 gtos with my roughly 1.8 liter RX8, all day any day. I agree, all of this is preference, and mine is, I'd stick with the M8. Touchwiz has too many gimmicks and useless things for me, Sense seems more streamlined, and straight to the point. Numbers don't always mean everything.

Did you read the OP? It's meant for OWNERS not somebody who owns an EVO and has never had either phone.
