Couple of gripes - Samsung Gear 2 Neo

1: Sleep Mode
First thing I noticed was that sleep mode might work well, but there needs to be a setting to lock the screen while sleeping! I woke up and called 2 people, rearranged my home page, and deleted a few icons! Not sure how I was able to do this in my sleep, but more need to lock the screen! I solved this issue by turning off gesture wakeup.
2: Indoor workouts
How do they not have the ability to track indoor workouts such as spinning or general fitness? I was hoping by getting the Neo that devs could write their own fitness apps that fix Samsung's issues. Turns out Samsung isn't opening the SDK to developers for this! My solution has been to only track heart rate using the running app, but my calories don't get tracked.
3: Took it out for a 20 mile bike ride, the screen would constantly show me going 89mi/h... I mean I might have been going 19mph but 89?!? It wasn't just once, it was the entire time. The summary page showed accurate results but not live...

how were you able to get the speed to show on the watch ?

You can turn the screen off by going into the Display settings. Annoying? Yes, but that's the only way. Maybe Samsung will release updates and/or devs will come up with a better one.

Where is the sleep mode option?

Also went on a bike ride and my speed fluctuated up to 60 mph... I did track the distance in addition to having runkeeper on at the same time on the phone and the distance readings are correct. Just have to get this speed thing figured out. When I completed the work out, it did show my max speed as 23 mph, so that part of the tracking seemed to work out fine.

You have to be updated to the latest rom.
The latest software version should be ND8. If it is not, then you can manually update the rom by loading Kies3 from Samsung and connect the Neo. (there is a thread somewhere in this Neo Forum that explains!)
Kies will detect the software update and push it through to the watch. My update stalled the first time, and I had to repeat. But after that I had the sleep app in my apps drawer.
Good Luck:good:

im not using a samsung phone, i suppose thats why i cant see it

just download kies3, put the watch to pc via USB, install the driver and you'll get notification that the firmware is avaiable.
I totaly agree for sleep mode and turning off the display.
And we need ALARM witch is stand alone in the watch it self. I mean it's a smart watch and no alarm... WTF

Are you referring to running the sleep app?? If so, there's an option called blocking mode that turns off gestures as well as notifications while the sleep app is tracking your sleep. I use it every night and have had no problems with it at all.

Really? It didn't say
It turns off gestures. I'll have to try that then. Although I would still want phone calls. It just needs more customization I guess.

1. For sleep mode there is an option in the sleep menu to enable blocking mode. Sleep function works independant so you can disconnect the BT connection.
2. I think this is an opportunity for exercise machien OEMs, think TechnoGYM, use NFC to sync such data, as opposed to their keys.
3. I suspect the fitness measurements (aside from HR) are not accurate.

Sleep mode works but they really should allow you to see the time when in sleep mode , you need to exit sleep mode to see if its time to get up

Correct. I use it most evenings.

They should add an option of a nag screen to remind you to turn off/on certain activity modes. IE- Still walking? if not, turn off pedometer. If it notices you're moving and pedometer is not on, ask you if you want to turn it on. Same goes for sleep sensor apps.

Also I have one gripe, I'm a flashoholic for phone roms. I have a Note 2. I find it very annoying that I have to wipe the Neo everytime I connect it to the phone with a new rom. Why can't it just keep the data on it? Messages etc not a problem, but sleep data, pedometer data and even clock and wallpaper all have to reset too.

Why do you need alarm???
You have to set alarm in your phone, gear 2 will indicate for you.
BTW I have a fav. free watch app, you can set alarm in this app on your gear 2.
This free watch app is LED Alarm, you can download it from your Samsung Apps...

[Q] Alarm doesn't work while phone is off ?

Hi,
Set the alarm at 7:00AM and switched the phone off to save battery. the alarm didn't work. tried again and again. simply doesn't work !!
what is this ?
Thanks guys
What do you mean you switch off? Do you lock it or turn it off. Because if you turn off your phone the alarm will not work.

Another "iPhone doesn't have it, so it's not needed" feature, I guess.. :/ too bad, really. It's not extremely difficult to implement a function like that. Or implement something like a standby mode that can be woken up by some system command. Such as an alarm, a preset sync event to a calendar update, an event on a calendar.. Could make the device sleep again after checking as well. Say you'd wake it up every once in a while to check for missed calls (if.. service providers would have ever implemented something like that - you could maybe even let your phone be woken up by a call.. if a system start would take five-ten seconds, connecting through would work), or receive unfetched messages or e-mail from the network, that sort of thing.

Firstly, this is a QUESTION and should be in the Q&A forum. But anyhoo...
I'm not sure if the OP and a couple of the other posters are trolling or just being deliberately obtuse. Do you REALLY expect your alarm to work when you turn your phone OFF? I know, back in the day some of the simple phones would support this, but it was implemented in hardware. Your phone now requires Android to run - not going to happen when it's turned off.
I want my phone on all the time so people can contact me if they need to. At night it goes into Quiet Hours, so only a phone call or alarm will disturb me. It also only uses about 7% battery overnight, so I can't see the problem with that at all.
As for the comments about the phone waking itself up periodically tipi check on things, that means that it can't actually be fully turned off, and also that will use battery in the first place.
I'm still not sure if I'm being trolled or not... :banghead:
lol. Yeah, back in the day most phones had a function like that. ..pretty much all laptops actually have the same thing, but no one actually use it for anything. Wake from lan-poll, wake from activity on system-bus, wake on software counter. Practically all chipsets have that from ARM boards to the latest desktop motherboards. Different depths of sleep states makes it pretty easy to do implement any amount of functions from that.
The "hardware" poll isn't a whole bunch more complicated than preserving the clock when turning the power off. All phones do that.. keep the clock from stopping after you hit the power.. and literally all phones have a soft switch to turn the phone from that "standby" state to power on state. And that switch can be triggered by a routine on some cmos clock+ module. It's not complicated. For all we know it could be there on the chipset already, it just didn't seem very appealing to anyone to program an app in Android to communicate somehow with the hardware layer outside the Android interfaces.
..I don't know. I have this feeling that in 20 years, when people are asked to program something and the Microsoft tools break - then people can't do it. "Original Code" becomes a religious object that people worship and call the divine wisdom of God, and things like that.. And no, you're not being trolled.

One Marshmallow user's impressions

http://tomhorsley.com/rants/doze-mode.html
I'm definitely reverting back to 5.1.1 when I get the time and energy to fool with it .
sounds like that was written by someone who hasn't even tried marshmallow yet. I have yet to experience any missed notifications, alarms or any issues relating to time in any way. If some apps are being affected by this then its a sign to the developer to fix their ****ty code because all of my apps relating to time at all have been working just fine and alot of them are still the same version they were on lollipop. Doze has improved my batter significantly. It sounds like this article was probably written by a developer who cant code properly and instead of improving his skills he'd rather complain and convince everyone to stay away from updates because he is unwilling to evolve. Even the article looks like it was written in paint...
I had indeed a wrong time bug some days ago...really strange and worrying, a reboot fixed it. First time ever since Android Froyo that I experienced something like that.
That author seems to think that Marshmallow's Doze is a horrible thing that breaks all apps that rely on background services, namely alarms and notifications, and couldn't possibly be fixed in 10 years (rather than a few months) due to Google's horrible mistake (rather than devs not fixing their code).
Frankly, it sounds like a bunch of hyperbole.
Sent from my ALCATEL ONE TOUCH Fierce using Tapatalk
He's wrong about how doze works. And if he's in the camp that doesn't understand it nor wants to rewrite his app. Then yeh he's the idiot group that Google is targeting and was writing garbage code anyway.
lol complete nonsense, my alarm has worked everyday since i flashed M, even on dev previews...the only issues i have with M are really the "slow to connect wifi when using toggles" and the weird wifi consumption on battery stats
Another annoying issue on M is that if your leave your phone longer in standby mode (display off), wifi turns off and you stop recieving notifications until you turn your phone on again. This is with wifi set to "never turn off", etc.

This actually happened with me a couple of days back, I was travelling, so I put my phone connected to a power bank and went for a nap, woke up to see phone switched off, switching it on throws me a 2nd September date set on my device. Had to manually set the date as no network was available to automatically set the date from servers.

This I had been noticing these days just because of WhatsApp Web. When in standby, WhatsApp Web shows phone not connected error. Just waking the phone reconnects to the WiFi, but happens every 30-40mins.
I have a feeling that folks who never see these problems have their phones charging at night and doze mode doesn't happen when you are charging. I have no convenient way to charge my phone near my bed, so it is not charging and totally idle all night. Email and messaging completely stops. Only the stock alarm clock works. My medication reminder stops working. It might as well be turned off completely. Plus when you do wake up and turn on the phone, all the pent up alerts come through and scare the hell out of you. I hate doze mode.
Settings -> Battery -> ... (menu)-> Battery Optimization --> All apps --> Select whatsapp, etc... and select not optimized.
Test again.
You're welcome.
I already disabled optimization in the battery settings for all the apps that weren't working. They still don't work after sitting overnight. It looks as if that setting has absolutely no effect.

This is a real problem. I tested this on a Nexus 5. The device seems to enter Doze after about 1 hour and this is what happens.
What does work in Doze mode:
- Telephone: call can be heard.
- Alarm: alarm can be heard
What does NOT work in Doze mode:
- Receiving mail notifications directly: it seems to wait for the maintenance window. There is no "ping" from my GMail. No lock screen notification until I picked it up. I turned off battery optimalization as suggested. Like Claghorn says, it doesn't make a difference. When I was sleeping, the time difference between sending the mail and getting a notification can be hours. That is not acceptable: I want to determine whether or not I get a message. I got no control over Doze, except plugging it in. Also, when it sits on the desk at work I need to pick it up or turn the screen on every so often, because I don't know if it "dozed" off again.
Works partially:
- Notification light: It works once mail passes through the maintenance window. It does NOT work before the maintenance window.
I tested all of this with a unrooted, updated Nexus 5. Topic Starter and Claghorn have good points. Why can't I turn this off? I don't want this. I want notification on time, with ping, right now. If I don't I will turn the volume off or set priorities. They could have told me this behavior in a mail or during the update. Important mail from work, family comes in hours late. Not happy with this at all.
Tried all sorts of things, nothing seems to help. And no, battery optimalization is either not enough or has nothing to do with it. I love the Nexus 5. Marshmallow seems to be much smoother than Lollipop. I was happy with the update until I discovered this. Now, I am fustrated. I expect the phone to inform me when I need to be informed. Most days I don't need to save 10% of power anyway. For the first time I want to either root the phone and go back to Lollipop or even Kitkat. I don't know what else can be done. Fustrated.

A quick suggestion -
You may use Doze Mode Editor and edit the script so that your phone never enters Doze mode.
That way you can enjoy Marshmallow without Doze.

Thanks, I will look into that. I'd like to keep Mashmallow as a whole if possible. I think it is a good update in general.
OK, I've looked at the doze mode editor thread and I find that the descriptions of the parameters I can set to be totally confusing, however, the flowchart pointed at in that thread seems to indicate that if I set the "inactive_to" value to something like 24 hours, then all the other doze mode nonsense is unlikely to ever happen (because I'll probably turn on my phone at least once every 24 hours). Does that seem like the best way to essentially turn off doze mode?

I will look into this over the weekend. I find it odd that there isn't simply a switch to turn Doze off, which is a pity. It seems to me it's part of saving energy in general. A switch under Battery would do nicely. It should not be this complicated. That said, I think the UI of Marshmallow is silky smooth, much better than Lollipop. Marshmallow in general in good. It' just this that annoys me.
i'm baffled by google's aversion to end user config. This kind of b.s. is how I found xda and drove me to become a chronic flashaholic. All or nothin I guess.

I get the feeling Google assumes the customer is a developer. A few examples:
- The Nexus 5 does have a notification light: I didn't know until I read 5 reviews and even then I couldn't find any documentation on it. Needed an external app to get it working.
- Battery indicator: I like to have small numbers indicating battery charge: it could be done by hacking KitKat and Lollipop I think. Then at Marshmallow finally there's a (hidden) switch.
- I don't recall having any user guide in the Nexus 5 package. Not that I needed one. But some landing page doing a walkthrough would have been nice. Although there are some walkthroughs in every app
Not fatal flaws, but you wonder why does it need to be that difficult. It scares people away. Not me. I handed the Nexus 5 to some friends on numerous occasions and most found it too "empty". As for me, I want all developer stuff on. So it suprised me, there is no Doze fine tuning. Again, overall I give the Nexus a 8 or 9 out of 10. It fits me. In general I like it. So it's just constructive criticism. The empty layout and raw speed of the Nexus 5 works good in development of apps afterall.
Last night I ran an adb command (generated by the doze mode editor app) to set inactive_to to 24 hours (86400000 milliseconds). I then set an alarm for the next morning in the "Alarm Clock Plus" app (which completely ceased to function after Marshmallow showed up). This morning, the alarm actually went off on time, but the big "Dismiss" button it draws on the screen was totally non-functional. I had to hit the power button to get control (which then caused a popup saying alarm clock plus was non-responsive). I have no idea what caused all that behavior, but at least the alarm actually went off.
Also, with doze mode essentially disabled (in theory anyway), the power dropped from 100% in the evening all the way down to 97% in the morning.
With the exception to facebook and game type apps, Google's apps are the only ones I find that excessively waste resourxes and need to be forced to sleep. If they would get off the constant location polling, media scanning, and logging or at least tone it down a bit some they wouldnt need to implement thier half baked versions of solutions that they hijacked from xda devs

Notification issue, I can't figure it out.

Ok so I'm on 6.0.1 and for the life of me I can't figure out this spastic notification behavior. When I'm using my phone, notifications come in just fine. However let's say I've left my phone on my desk and come back in an hour and pick up the phone... as soon as I turn the screen on, all the notifications start flying in from the past hour, including all the notification sounds 1 by 1 in quick succession. I've checked all the options I can to see if there is anything related to this behavior but I can't find it.
I've gotten used to iOS where my notifications are always on the screen waiting for me so I can pick up the phone and glance and put back down, without the hoopla of watching them fly in after turn the screen on and listening to all the annoying notification sounds jumbled together. I'm by no means new to Android however. I've owned many but my last was my N5 which got long in the tooth so I switched to a iPhone 6S as my daily driver and have been using my N5 just to play around and keep up with development of my favorite ROMS and apps. I saw the 6 on a really good deal so I decided to pick up it and see what it would be like to have Android as my daily driver again.
Anyhow, all that being said, how do I get the desired outcome of notifications actually coming in when the phone is idle and waiting for me without having to load after I turn the screen on? I'm guessing notifications in 6.0+ are tied to wakelock events but not sure. Any thoughts?

What you are seeing is androids new doze feature. It puts apps to sleep when the device has been on a flat surface for a long time unmoved. Go into settings/apps/What ever app you want and change the battery priority settings.

Ah OK. I totally forgot about doze... Want aware it was implemented in this manner. All the setting to change this would be in the app/notification section and Rick the "treat add priority" option? The description associates this option with so not disturb mode but it also affects doze too?

Ahh sorry had to find it again. It is under settings/battery then hit the 3dot menu for battery optimization. Then select the app. And change the settings. An easy work around is to plug it in when you will be leaving it for awhile. This disables doze.

What I would like to have happen is have the clock go into night mode when: wirelessly charging, connected to a specific wifi network, and to start and end at specific times.
I've been messing around with this and can't figure it out for the life of me. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

where exactly are you stuck at?
Basically the whole thing... I created a profile called night mode to turn on and off at certain hours.
In the tasks tab, I've tried to set up the wifi network, but don't see a variable for specifying being connected to it, nor do I see anything for the battery charging wirelessly.
A couple you tube videos later and I'm scratching my head harder.

so for the Wi-Fi part:
- there is the state 'Wi-Fi connected' to activate when you are connected
- you can use 'test net' to store ssid to a variable, then check it for a match with certain ssid, with which you want the profile to react to - only do when connected to certain Wi-Fi.
I don't have wireless charge so I cannot say anything here, but if I remember correctly, recent update of Tasker has included detection of this, so too should bff able to sound something useful in those states or events.
Then finally, in the clock app, you can either try to use intent or simulate taps to switch it to night clock.
After that, hopefully you will be happy with the result
Thank you sir. I will give those a shot
Light dawns on marble head! I got it to work, 98% of what I envisioned.
Is there a way to make this work without having to wake the phone up first? A lot of times, I just place it on the charger.

what is your solution so far?
for connecting to Wi-Fi, sometimes it does not connect without screen on though, and I still have not figured that out.
Rather than try to explain it, these are my set ups.
Didn't seem to work as I wanted until I added the the, If lines to tasks 2and 3.
Still gotta unlock the phone to start the process though.

did you check to use root in the run shell commands?
Sadly I don't have a solution for the unlocking part.
I did use root. Had to add the if statement at the bottom for. Both tasks are the same aside from the input tap x y numbers
PS.. If I remove the pattern lock, it will work the way I want(ed) it to. Not worth it to do that IMO.

ah the pattern lock! now I see the pattern
do you have Xposed? maybe try to allow clock app over lock screen?
No exposed. Is it out for 7.1.1?

Sleep Tracking Not Working

Hi all,
Just bought a 45mm watch3 , everything seems to be working except for sleep tracking. Do i need anything else to be set? HR, Stress and Oxygen are all working well. As well as motion.
Thanks in advance.

Sleep tracking is enabled by default in health app in watch by default unless it's been turned off. Please check in the health app. Did you restored the watch from any old watch?

Try resetting the watch once and if it doesn't work, time to replace it.

What do you mean by "Sleep as Android". Are you talking about Samsung Health App in phone? It doesn't have any relationship to the Watch. The phone determines the time of your sleep and wake up based on the phone usage pattern.

Third party app, records how you sleep using the same method as samsung health.
But even if i manually enter sleep into samsung health sleep, it doesn't show on the watch . Everything else is syncing, steps , stress , heartrate ect sync almost instantly. But watch since Thursday says no sleep recorded.

Its not correct if updating the Samsung Health App in phone to update the watch data. So, adding sleep data in phone will not show up in the watch. It could be the way you sleep or strap is not fasten correctly. Whatever reason is, if I was you, I will be replacing it straight away.

I had my sleep tracking suddenly stopped working on my GW3 also. Is your watch still tracking your heart rate? Mine had for some reason stop taking my heart rate every 10 mins and that affected the sleep tracking. I switch it to continuous heart rate tracking then back to 10 min and sleep tracking works now.
So check and see if your watch is keeping track of your heart rate

It was still checking the heartrate, but i switched to continuous and back to 10 minutes again see if it works.
Seems to be working now.
I dont know if its because i updated the phone firmware to BTJ3 new build or because i installed Samsung Health Monitor on Watch and Phone as per thread in this forum.
Ok spoke to soon, it stopped again.
How has everyone got their phone / watch set up?
Does anything stop it like DND or something?
Has to be a setting issue as all other sensors work and this sleep did 3 times .

I had the same problem a few months back. I backed up all watch data, factory reset it, restored watch data and it worked flawlessly ever since.

Something weird it took like all day to register sleep from the morning, theres some kind of delay between apps or something.
Weird sleep as android works ok. Then i notice that sleep tracker started tracking but not for a complete night. If i get up for the toilet then go back to sleep it stops. Then i was woken by a courier delivery at 7am, got back to bed, damn thing started tracking again. It seems very intermitent.
