Keep or not? Help!

Hey everyone, love the phone first of all. My problem? Sprint. I used to have sprint, but ended up going to tmobile with the nexus 4. When I decided to get HTC one, it was either pray for online store to have one available and pay $99 + $90 a month, or get one at a local sprint store and pay $50 for service (sero). Ended up transferring to sprint.
Right now, I'm in dc, and I really have pretty deeply data speeds, even on lte it gets maybe 3mbps... Granted, I know that dc market isn't live yet, but still. At the gym I go to, if I'm on lte it works good, but even with full bars it decides to drop down to 3g often, Shi h results in me not even being able to stream a thing... Never those issues on T-Mobile, reason I wanted new phone was to odd issues on nexus 4 and I wasn't sure if it was phone related, or network. A lot of people seemed to have similar problems on nexus though. It'd end up dropping all service, or just poor reception in general. I've heard that tmo variant of the HTC had much better antenna...
Now, I will be moving to Atlanta in 20 days, I know that T-Mobile is pretty good there. I know that sprint used to be terrible there, but how is it now? The lte there is supposed to be at 70% deploymenet, but I'm guessing that's just the downtown area, I'll be living in buckhead. Anybody out in that area that could comment on speeds?
Financially, makes more sense to stick to sprint. $99 for phone + $50 a month vs $99 phone + $90 a month.

If you want information on where you can find LTE, check www.sensorly.com or get their app from the Google Play Store. That's going to tell you where the LTE is where you're going.

Tried that, doesnf really give too accurate of info, I've used it before for sprint and it gave me really good coverage info, yet, 3g was still obysmal (200kbps).

If you're so concerned, go to Atlanta and test it. You can also check the thread in this particular forum where users are posting screenshots of their speedtests as well as general locations.

My friend had an Evo and moved to Atlanta. Fast forward to now, he switched to Verizon lol.

I will say this, I live in atlanta and I get lte everywhere including all surrounding counties and cities outside the perimeter. If you are really moving to atlanta you should definitely stay with sprint, things have improved exponentially over the last year or so. Early last year I was this close to switching to at&t and decided to give sprint one more damn year and it turned out to be a pretty good decision. Now sprint might still be garbage in other places but in atlanta its pretty damn good.

Nice! What speeds do you usually get?
Ans to the person who said just go there... I am in June, but it doesn't make sense to go now just to see how it is, and if I wait till June I will be outside of my 14 day.

For the most part I would say that I average about 15megs down with very low pings. Of course its not perfect, at times you will have those moments when you hit 30+megs and other times you will have those moments where you can barely hit 5megs but that doesn't happen very often at all.

Well a few of my friends have tmobile service and for the most part hspa+ is pretty fast as well but ping times are no where near what you can get compared to lte. There aren't many places where I would actually recommend sprint service but atlanta is definitely one of those places where I would recommend sprint.

also if you're looking to keep tabs on the LTE network for sprint, i'd recommend S4gru, its a blog as well you can follow peoples comments and check out what areas are spotting LTE. Just a warning it gets quite addictive i check like once a day for orlando lol

Haha yea, that's partially why I decided to give it a shot, the fact that s4guru listed Atlanta at such high completion. I just don't know, I like the idea of what sprint is doing, they should have very good lte coverage and good building penetration in the future. Although, sadly, a lot of what sprint said over the past few years sounded great on paper, yet, failed in reality.

Sprint: The Comeback

So, as many of you know, Sprint took a huge fall from 2004-2006. They have since to recover fully to the mobile giant they once were, but as of recently, some monumental changes have been made. Many analysts even believe 2014 will be the year for Sprint. Lately, Network Vision has made a huge impact on many customers (including myself) with 4G LTE and upgraded 3G, the iDen (push-to-talk) network has been shut down for good, Sprint acquired ClearWire, and SoftBank invested in Sprint. They're even dropping the old "Sprint Nextel" name and switching to "Sprint Corp." as soon as the deal goes through.
So what do you guys think? With the owner of SoftBank, Masayoshi Son, willing to throw billions into Sprint for network upgrades, is Sprint making a comeback? Or should we just ignore all that and jump ship to AT&T or Verizon?
I'm fairly optimistic about Sprint myself, so I'd really like to hear some other opinions.

I think Sprint is about to make some power moves and some big ones.a friend of mine in Carolina has metro pcs phone service and when he pulls his battery out of his phone it says Sprint and has a Sprint logo and whenever Sprint makes a move so do they. They rolled out 4g lte at the same time, they have the same equipment, Sprint branding hidden throughout metro pcs devices something is brewing lol....

I hope sprint doesnt forget about us who stuck with them. If sprint became number one you can bet they will be doing the same rates as verizon. 4g lte with unlimited is good but tmobile has the same and is catching up in the 4g lte department. Plus tmobile is gsm. Always a plus.

Sprint in Indiana is 100x better since network vision upgrades started. Let's just hope softbank can fund sprint enough to cover all the roaming areas.

With the Nextel Spectrum now available to Sprint's disposal, the sub-1 Ghz spectrum (the lower the frequency, the more coverage/wall penetration is has.) will help Sprint's national footprint by a longshot. This is only possible now because Sprint shut down the Nextel network on June 30th. Not only that, but for the crowded areas, Sprint has Clearwire with their enormous Spectrum holding, that they literally have enough spectrum to offer 100mbps speeds on their towers. This is completely up to Softbank and their plans, but from what I hear, Softbank is only going to make Sprint better for its consumers, and the duopoly in a few years will be hurting.

True. Killing nextel is huge. It will come together in the next 2 years. To bad our phones only support lte 1900. I'm happy to see them in the right direction. I'm sticking with them.

No he didn't flash anything he bought the phone NEW from metro pcs and when he went to put the battery in the phone it was Sprint branded

i dont know what kind of store your friend bought it at but i assure you metropcs has never sold a sprint like device. i have been working on their phone since the sgs1 days and they had a crappy knock off of the epic called the indulge 4g.

Because metro stores can by a lot of Sprint phones from a distributor , brand new in the box.

I don't know what kind of store it was but he called to ask me about a possible merger between the 2 companies when he saw it to see if I had heard anything because I worked for Sprint at the time I told I had not heard anything and he said his phone was branded Sprint with the Sprint logo in the battery compartment but the outside was metro pcs branding the phone he had at the time was their version of the original Motorola photon

no corporate store would do that, they would rather try to sell you the phones metropcs actually has, they stopped the metroflash service for that reason
there was no version of the photon for them, us cellular had the electrify, but metropcs has NEVER had a moto android device

I've seen plenty do that. I have brothers who are distributors and sell a couple dozen phones at a time to cricket and metro.

Yeah that is the phone so it was us cellular my bad I got the little guys mixed up they both might as well be straight talk as far as I am concerned lol I don't have either one of them here in Nashville so I don't know what metro flash is bro Lol we have Sprint, Verizon, at&t, t mobile, cricket and simple mobile oh and of course straight talk thanks to Wal-Mart

not a problem. and since the reverse merger with tmobile is almost done, id suggest you keep your eye on metropcs. they had the first lte phone, first lte service in america, merged with tmobile to become the 4th largest carrier in america. now they have an agressive 2 year plan to shut off cdma and switch all of their prepaid customers to gsm within that time. as it turns out 60%+ of metro's customer upgrade their devices at least once a year. it will be interesting to see how much metro's cheap plans will end up cutting a hole into tmobile's famous 30 dollar plan.

We will see what happens I mean you merge with another company to be number 4 that doesn't sound like you are trying to make power moves to me that really won't affect us in our market because T-Mobile is not holding their own very well around here because their coverage sucks here for every 10 stores of the big 3 you see maybe 2 T-Mobile stores and all 4 have call centers here when I worked at Verizon when we had our quarterly meetings they wouldn't even mention T-Mobile if they did it was because they were the punch line of a joke lol

I've been with Sprint for the first time since May of last year and I'm excited for them and what they have in store for us. I hope they bring 4G LTE to more areas quicker.

Most people just consider T-Mobile just a regional carrier, specific to the west coast. So on the coverage end I don't think Sprint, being the nationwide carrier that they are, has anything to worry about. All I can see is that if Sprint doesn't pick up momentum on the west coast with LTE that T-Mobile could catch up. Right now the only real place that T-Mobile has LTE that Sprint doesn't yet is in Arizona, but Sprint is rolling it out now. Also, now with the SoftBank investment, Sprint has much more capital for a long term LTE and LTE-Advanced deployment. So with all these recent happenings, I see no reason to switch carriers :laugh:

Time will tell...After 14 years with Sprint I keep thinking about getting T-Mobile. I like not having to pay full price on phones though. Heck i make money. LoL. I have 5 lines so always have a upgrade to use.

With SoftBank and Clear, Sprint has far too much potential for any of us to start being hasty. If your with the girl when she's fat...don't leave when she starts going to the gym.
They only problem they have is their roaming agreement. They have never solidified a good contract for it. The New plans even limit your roaming data and voice, it's they're only down fall imo. But when the build is near complete, that won't be an issue.

Getting HTC one.. Sprint or Tmo

Not sure if this should go here or not.. But I've been watching the One since it was announced.
And I'm currently on the old $30/month plan from Tmo with an HTC Amaze..
Unfortunately I to get the one from Tmo the require $379 down which is a lot of money at once and will also up my bill to $70
But I also have the option to get one someones Sprint plan and get a One for $99...
But just looking thought the forum, its looking like the GSM One is getting better Dev support
Along with Google ports.
An another possible problem that comes to mind... is CDMA..
I was on sprint awhile ago and Had a HTC Hero and the battery drain was HORRIBLE compared to the my Magic. Not sure if that is still an issue with the new LTE stuff...
But yeah, my real question is, should I go for the Sprint One or hold out a bit and get the Tmo One?

To my knowledge, you're not going to have a significant battery difference between CDMA and GSM. Updates will almost always be slower for us in the Sprint world because GSM variants tend to be more common worldwide, but the devs here work plenty hard. I'd check the forum though yourself to see if there're any ROMs you actually like the look of instead of taking someone else's word on how "good" dev is.
Price-wise, you might be better off going prepaid on T-Mobile, but then you'd need an unlocked GSM One, and that's dicey stuff.

Tmo is the way to go imho. I thought about getting the one when I got my nexus....it's about the only phone I'd consider other than my nexus. I chose the nexus because of the bang for your buck factor and dev support. I'm happy with my choice but I still love the one! Really a beautiful phone, with the guts to match....good luck

Yeah, go Tmo. Once you go CDMA, you shall never escape...

T mobile if you can afford it.
You can fully convert it to GPe or dev unlocked edition. It gets more support.
I read somewhere that only Sprint has working Google Wallet, though.
Coverage wise, it depends. Tmo is fantastic here (at least, the HSPA was), but Sprint doesn't even cover some of the places it says has "Good/better 3g".
As someone above said, you should check out the prepaid plans. It might be cheaper/better in the long run if you buy unlocked and just put in a prepaid card. Even if you will go over the data/minutes, the overages may still be cheaper than a contract.

Yep. I think we'd all have T-Mobile over Sprint if we had our choice. But we all have reasons... It's cheaper to stay on Sprint, etc...

Personally I'm staying on Sprint because they are making moves to make a triband network, as opposed to tmo which is a single band network. But at the moment Sprint is just terrible.

Tmo base everything off of your credit check when they run it. For example, my cousin was told he he had to put down $500 and I was told $100.
However I chooses to come back to Sprint because I think they have good things coming ahead and plus Tmo service here where I live is little to nonexistent

I'm on the $30 plan right now. But to finance a phone for me its 3xx down and sixty something a month.
And those 100 minutes burn up FAST.
In the long run sprint is actually going to be cheaper because I'm getting on an existing plan for 20-30 a month for unlimited everything.
But I'm still not sure I want to go CDMA...
I live in Columbus so coverage for both sprint and tmo is great..

Just stopped in to sprint store and they said the had no clue what this was and nothing like that would be coming to sprint.sprint always seems to be the last to know anything..plus the last to get anything new in....

In case you didn't know, Sprint store employees are NOT allowed to tell customers about upcoming events or promotions.
Trust me, they do know about such things.
I know this because a sprint store employee told me that they do know about upcoming promotional events.

Especially since most times they have to be trained on certain devices and promotions..

Nexus 5 will be sprint compatible.... we will find out in a few weeks!

I'm not gonna ruin the Nexus 5, by putting it on Sprints network. Hello T-Mobile!

I work at Sprint and I play with all the new devices when they launch. First impression of the Nexus was it felt cheap. And the fact that it's made by LG this time just backs up the why the quality somewhat trash. The obnoxious circle phone speaker in the front was hideous. I thought it was a front facing speaker like HTC's One but it was an in call speaker. It looked like a knock off of all the phones that are out.
I did enjoy playing with the camera. A lot of new stuff that I want sure how to use yet but first impression was that the camera would be 1 of the key selling points for the phone. I had mixed feelings about the gigantic app icons but like I said it was my first impression so they could grow on me.
The feel of the phone in terms of performance wasn't bad. My GS4 is smoother with scrolling but I am stock rooted with stock kernel and debloated so Im pretty sure once this phone is too then it will be smooth as well. I did like how apps would open very quickly. Not much faster than my GS4 but was noticeable.
Honestly the phones performance isn't something to debate about because it is very resposnsive. And the Google Now feature is dope as well, but the feel and look of the phone just felt cheap like it was made from recycled parts or something. Just my 2 cents. The phone is a decent LG quality phone. If you like LG then go for it.

Neither does Sprint. How is something "real" if it doesn't tangibly exist in any measurable form in most places.

TMobile has 3G HSPA + which isn't actually any form of 4G but they advertise it as that. Your LTE capable phone isn't even on a real 4G or 4G LTE network.

So I had been toying with the idea of going from S4 -> N5, and went to the sprint store to play with N5. It does feel snappy. Just like when I install a fresh new rom on S4. Though Google Now fc on me on the N5.
Next I loaded up the same web page on both devices and noted that the page pan was not that significantly different.
Not convinced quite yet, but I may change my mind later. Still waiting for the ipad air to arrive which would keep me entertained for a while.

Because it is still being launched?
I feel like a lot of Sprint people expect Sprint to have LTE up in their back yard instantly. People always compare their LTE to Sprint. Verizon had a two year start on LTE deployment than Sprint since they chose to go with Wimax.

T-Mobile absolutely has LTE. And theirs is at least 20 times faster than Sprint's LTE here. I'm on Sprint LTE at home, and I just got 124 kbps down and 300 up. That's actually pretty good for their LTE! And it's been launched here for a few months. I guess that's what you get when you launch LTE handsets before you even have an LTE network to use them on anywhere in the nation. Once it's turned on, there are thousands of handsets sucking down the bandwidth as soon as it's turned on. Would probably help if they weren't running each tower off of one single Comcast cable modem...
Obviously that last part isn't true. but they shouldn't be selling or having LTE service here, if 124 kbps is there idea of LTE.

Just an issue with that area. I consistently get 500kbps at my work, come home and get over 30mbps. The network is building, give it time.

Than LTE hasn't been officially riled out yet in your area.it well get better. I typically get between 15-30mbs down and 10-15mbs up on Sprint LTE and my area is only 75 percent rolled out. When I first started getting LTE in my area I would only get 1-2mbs down. Hang in there and it will get better. Also, all carriers sell their LTE phones before the network is built out.

Thoughts on Download Booster Being Disabled?

Today I posted this on G+:

I'd be willing to place down a wager that the +Verizon Wireless and +AT&T variants of the Galaxy S5 will have the download booster feature disabled.
I can't imagine those companies taking very kindly to the idea of using WiFi and LTE simultaneously, just due to the fear of pissed off customers going over their data plans because they had no idea what they were doing. Plus it has the real potential to create even more usage on their networks, which most bigger carriers don't seem to like.
Considering how providers like to push people to use WiFi whenever possible (doesn't ever carrier have a WiFi finder app these days?), yeah, I don't see the big boys taking too kindly to the download booster. I guess we'll find out in a little under 2 weeks.
If my hunch is correct, I'd highly suggest that anyone owning affected variants scream and complain to anyone who will listen. This will hopefully lead to the guilty carriers releasing statements saying "The exclusion of the download booster functionality was an oversight and not intentional. We will fix this issue in a future software update."
Any thoughts?

It better not be. But yes, I can see them doing that. I say, it's my data, let me use it anyway I want to.

Well AT&T's sure doesn't mention download booster anywhere on the S5 page. I swear to God if they disabled it I will raise hell. Such a great feature too.
But these larger carriers have to much control. They really shouldn't be able to touch any device or modify it. Only Samsung should do that. If T-Mobile didn't have such spotty coverage by me, I'd be on them in a second ordering my S5 instead of ATT.
Ordering the non carrier version of the S5 isn't an option either because it so conveniently doesn't support bands 4 and 17. WOW

That's because the unlocked international version isn't intended for the US market. It's intended to be sold at retail in other countries and the LTE bands that it suppers reflects that.

I don't see why they would do this. If a customer goes over their data usage, that's more money in the carrier's pocket. Playing ignorance isn't an excuse for going over your limit. I don't see why a carrier would hand-hold customers on this issue. Not only that, but I don't see Samsung allowing them to do this, considering this is a pretty major selling point for the S5.

I could be wrong but i would imagine there is a setting you can disable to prevent yourself from constantly using both. So it should be in the purchasers hands hence no reason for AT&T to disable it to prevent data overages. That being said, AT&T is a company that likes to piss everyone off and remove features that are major selling points just because they can.

I can definitely see them doing this. Let me tell you why. AT&T is the only carrier that has brainwashed people in thinking WIFI is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I've often had AT&T reps tell me, ya know you really should use WIFI instead of your data. I was like why do I pay for it then? I still have the original AT&T $30 unlimited data plan for smartphones so I don't care, but even with that, they try to tell me to use wifi. I believe its because they don't want the same disaster to happen to their network that happened back in 2009. The network overloaded with all the iPhones. Nowadays, the network is amazing and has no problem with capacity. But I think they instilled it into all their rep's heads to make people use WIFI all the time. I have passed an AT&T store while driving and my phone connects to their crappy WIFI. I even argued with one rep a while back that my mobile internet connection is more stable than their crappy in-store WIFI network.
So yea thats my two cents. I really hope they don't eliminate this awesome feature. I pre-ordered the device on AT&T and will be the first one to post if they did or not when I get it April 8

I preordered an AT&T GS5 as well. I don't think it will replace my Z Ultra GPE as a daily driver, but I'm definitely going to have fun with it.

Yea I know. Part of me just wishes there was only 1 GS5 that was a world phone that supported every kind of LTE network.
I did use the International Galaxy S3 years ago on AT&T and it worked great. No bloat, fast updates, and a black dialer. I may sound contradicting here, but now may actually be a great time to buy an HSPA+ only device. The HSPA+ network works great and isn't congested anymore. I occasionally test it out on my iPhone 5S since you can turn LTE off. I always get about 7-10mbps down. Even during calls speeds are now great. But when your getting 50mbps on LTE going back to H+ kinda hurts lol.
I ordered the white GS5. Never owned a white galaxy before. Cant wait to get it.

My thought was actually that I will never use this feature unless it's an emergency" (I. e. need new rom ASAP) or I have a lot of data left for the month. Otherwise, AT&T could be making some nice dough off of people going over their data limits.

I am hoping that there is a way to disable it, as I really don't need it.
As it turns out, I changed my mind.. Cancelled my order and ordered HTC One M8

According to that article, not only can you disable it, but it actually doesnt impact normal web browsing or downloading small files. All the more reason AT&T has no excuse to disable it. For the average consumer, you wont got over your data simply because its on. If you arent downloading files over 30mb, it does nothing.

I'm sure the feature isn't there on the store models. Maybe because no sim card or active data connection

If they disabled that feature then I think its time we start retaliating. I probably will send my pre-order back and go with the International version. The LTE networks are getting bogged down nowadays, while the HSPA+ network is doing great.

I'm going to head over to the biggest corporate store in the area tonight and see if they have a GS5 on the floor. If so, I'll try to verify it. If it's true, you can bet your ass I'm canceling my preorder.
