Galaxy S5 Google Play Edition - Galaxy S 5 General

I, like some others on the internet, feel like it's very possible that there won't be a Galaxy S5 GPE. Here's why:
-Samsung has hinted they wish to use their own OS (Tizen) and are trying to ditch Android. I don't know how far away this is, but with continually locking and customizing down their platform it appears they are purposefully moving away from the openness of Android. With them being slated as a manufacturer of an Android Wear device, this occurrence of ditching Google could very well be far off or nonexistent. I've only read a couple articles about this possibility, and it somewhat makes sense.
-Samsung won't move to software buttons. Google has long since pushed for software buttons on Android phones, and now most OEMs are following Google's "suggestions".
Samsung, on the other hand, has stubbornly stayed with hardware buttons (which I'm perfectly fine with XD)
-It hasn't been announced yet. The M8 GPE was announced and went on sale about three weeks ago. The S5 was announced 2 months ago, and there's been no mention of a GPE. It's possible it could come out at Google I/O, but it doesn't make sense why Samsung would wait so long after their biggest Android competitor already released their GPE.
-There are lots of hardware features to integrate. I'm not sure that Google would let Samsung integrate the fingerprint scanner and heartbeat sensor into the stock skin.
Although this post may seem pretty negative, I really hope the GPE S5 is released. I loved stock on the S4, and it would be a real shame if they stopped with the GPE phones.
What are your thoughts? Will they pull through and surprise us all with the S5 at I/O? Or will it remain a distant dream?

They announced they will be making tizen phones, but they will still make android phones as well. From what I read, it didn't sound like their flagship would be tizen based any time soon, and the tizen phones might be in developing countries. This is based off one article I read a few days ago. New/different info may be available now.

I think it's all speculation at this point, but Samsung seems not to be nearly as devoted to Google as other Android OEMs.

Oh yeah I totally agree. I was telling someone last week that I was betting they would move away from android and the next day saw an article about an actual announcement(I think an actual one). I will post a link if I find the source again. It was on flipboard
Edit: not the original article I saw but found another on flipboard. http://www.nbcnews.com/tech/gadgets...-tizen-phones-n82031?cid=sm_twitter_feed_tech

Cool thanks! They'll turn into another Nokia (except with Android on the high end, not low end).
I think the S4 GPE was a success, so it seems silly why they wouldn't give it another go.
Edit: just saw your edit. Thanks!
Edit2: just read the article. Could the first Tizen "high-end" phone be the... Galaxy F?

There is no Galaxy S5 GPE yet. This is only speculation.
On the S4 GPE, you couldn't change display settings like you could on the stock one (Cinema/Photography/Adapt Display).
There was only the stock calibration. I'm sure there were and are kernel mods for it, though.

I didn't have a stock S4 to compare my GPE to (I sold my stock one before getting the GPE), but it looked to be the Cinema calibration IIRC (the more accurate one).

I don't think so, carriers are the ones who don't care about the users. Samsung promised, "in three months", and they delivered. 4.3 in late september and KK in late january.
But to keep it ontopic, if we don't see a GPe during I/O they may release it a bit later. HTC launched it earlier because they're desperate to get some attention for the shiny turd...

I was more joking, but you're right. They've been pretty good with it. HTC has been better, but they have no choice.
3 months is still a little long for my liking, though. I'd rather get it on my GPE in a couple of weeks

LG cant make A Nexus!

The fact that LG MAY get the green light to make Google's next flagship phone for Android 5.0/ Key Lime Pie is sad...Samsung has done it since the Nexus S right?! And they did the GNex and Sammy has the right to go and make the Next Gen Nexus!!.. Thank if you agree! and comment if you don't and why you don't
5 manufacturers are supposed to make Nexi (?) this year. I agree, Samsung does make good Nexi (?).

+1 to that. Got a Nexus 7 (actually work got it for part of the demo kit, but it comes home with me every night) and I love it. Could be better - sd-card support and 3G would make it perfect), but it's probably the best tablet I've ever used. Asus made a great bit of hardware, Google made a great piece of software - who needs to be a brand snob?
I think it's good to have a manufacturer other than Samsung make the next Nexus. HTC had one chance, MOTO got the XOOM and ASUS got the 7. Why should Samsung get 2+ GED's?
Well,LG phones have bad software but gold hardware, so who cares

I'm interested to see who ends up making it, especially because I'm probably going to end up buying it. I don't know if LG alone will get the next nexus, but there are rumors that there could be different versions from multiple manufacturers. There really isn't enough concrete evidence to know for sure, but since last year's nexus was released in October, hopefully we'll know more soon.

Why would Lg be a bad choice for the next nexus?
FYI software is a VERY invalid response, considering their phone would be VANILLA Android (nexus device, herp derp)
Lg makes great phones.
Lg optimus G anyone?
Htc would be a good choice again too...the Nexus One was EASILY the best phone of its time. The nexus S should've never been released, considering its a REBRANDED GALAXY S (prove me wrong, go ahead and name differences between the galaxy s and nexus s), and the galaxy nexus was outdone by samsung themselves with the release of the GS3 which is basically a GNex with a quadcore exynos and not OMAP inside. The s3 didn't even upgrade the screen from the gnex!
I think samsung has had their time in the nexus sun..
As Motorola Mobility is a subsidiary of Google or simply, now owned by Google why the next Nexus can't be made by Motorola?!
I had this same thought when the Galaxy Nexus came out from Samsung, but at that time Google didn't acquired the company it seems.

I'm assuming Google is afraid of violating any Antitrust laws. Not sure if them owning a manufacturer that produces their flagship would violate anything but I don't think Android OEM's would be too jazzed on the idea.

Exactly, In a way I do agree with some of the above posts about how Sammy got theirs twice in a row, but honestly, I have had all the Flagship phones and out of all of them, I would have to say Samsung did the best with the Nexus S. It was awesome, a good body, just the specs were low key...the GNex literally was an Extended version of the S. If Moto was to make a Flagship phone for Google, I'd cry and possibly not buy another Android phone until the following year! ;D
Is KLP really going to release so soon after JB? We are going to be at Zebra Cake in 2015. I wouldn't be surprised if they waited till next year for a name change. JB is on 1.8% of Android devices.

I think Google released JB when they did as a "Buffer" OS and to keep us all down and sane because I am sure they saw how various Android Forums exploded with questions as to when Google is making an update. Because look at JB vs. ICS, theres only a few differences, Google Now and Project Butter. I think when Google releases KLP...Hopefully in the near future, it will be a big step up and a competitor to the much inferior iOS 6 ;D

Does ASUS even make phones? Would be a sweet one if they did, everything else they make is solid. Would love to see HTC make it, they make great phones, the only bad thing is Sense and how hard they are to unlock, both of which wouldn't be a problem with a nexus.

Is the Nexus 4 going to be the LAST nexus device? Since the Galaxy S4 and HTC One are both going to get the Nexus treatment with unlocked bootloaders and etc I kinda feel like more developers are going to shift toward those instead despite its steeping price point of 650$.

there have been other devices with a pure android experience besides the sgs4, and there will be others. that doesnt make them a nexus. a nexus is a nexus, there will be more, the nexus 4 isnt the last one.
It might end up being one of the last.. Maybe one more. Now that there are two top notch phones with pure android I'd be hard pressed to buy another nexus. Probably going to grab the HTC this summer. I won't really care much if it's the latest and "Nexus Experience" phones take it's place. (as long the updates and stock software behave like a Nexus)
All Nexuses had issues with specs when compared to their competition after all.
(N1/Desire (lack multitouch screen), NS/GS (lack SD Card), GN/GSII (camera downgrade), N4/OG (yet another camera downgrade, no LTE))
This make me wonder what Google is thinking.
The only thing I will miss is the sleek no-logo front.

I will never buy another phone that isn't in the Nexus line as long as Nexus is being made. I came from the iPhone 4 to the Nexus 4 with zero experience in any Nexus device, or even Android in general, and I can tell you that pure Android is the best Android. I have a bunch of friends who hate Android solely because they bought a low-end phone that was running an outdated version of Android and had low specs.
"Yeah, but you should buy those Google Edition phones! They're so good and still show off pure Android!"
Yes, but at the same time, no. It's what AOSP 'should' look like, but it isn't truly AOSP. The OEMs still have to input their proprietary drivers/kernels to make it compatible with that hardware, so it's still customized. Android is developed for the latest Nexus device, and Nexus is made to show off the latest Android. I will sincerely buy every Nexus device that will ever be made because it is so open (and cheap). The freedom granted to OEMs, or end-users, is ridiculous. One line of code to unlock the bootloader? For real? Why WOULDN'T you buy Nexus? Come on.

Historically, not all nexii are as cheap as the N4. Just ask galaxy nexus, nexus s, nexus one and google one owners who bought devices from play. They paid an arm for their devices!! I could flash Cyanogenmod and be good to go. I mean I had the EOL idea too but now I'm rethinking it. And to think what goodies may come in the fall. The Galaxy S4 LTE-A with a 2.3ghz processor.... In my opinion the n4 is the best phone available especially since it will get official/unofficial updates for 3-5 years or so,

Well it seems that the S4 and the HTCone are not going to get their updates at the same time as us Nexus owners, Google says
On background, we will be working very closely with Samsung and HTC on future software updates for these devices and they will receive software updates shortly after a new version is released.

This makes it one more reason why I will stay with a true Google device.

Nexus 4 Overlooked?

Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Does anyone else feel as though our beloved device is taking a back seat to the GE edition s4 and HTC one? For so long I was proud to be a nexus owner due to the promise of prompt updates. Now it seems that the above two devices are getting 4.3 leaks while we stand by and wonder WTF. They are great phones but so is the n4. So why is Google making them the first to get updated instead of staying true to form with their own device? I love my n4 but am starting to feel cheated by Google at the same time.
Didn't know the One had a leak too.

Google isn't in the habit of allowing leaks; they're happily working away on firmware for our device while HTC/Samsung employees leak firmware for theirs.
But Samsung and HTC one Google Edition updates are handled by Google like our n4 not by Samsung or HTC.

Both companies would still have their hands on it however.

No, they're handled by Samsung/HTC http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/0...play-edition-one-or-s4-oems-will-handle-otas/
No I don't think that's correct because you cannot flash the GE 4.3 on a non-google edition Samsung s4 or HTC one so why would they have their hands on pure android? Remember that there is no touchwiz or HTC sense on the GE devices.

So they can test it on the phones they're manufacturing.
And some more reading, Russel Holly has an incredibly high (100%?) batting percentage.

So much facepalm in one thread. Amazing.
google has nothing ro do with the updates for the ge edition phones, all they do is sell them. these are pure android phones, that arent supported by aosp, and still use propriatary files/drivers from samsung/htc.

I dont see where your getting your sources from and why youre so jealous.
4.3 can be flashed on certain s4's so long as they have the right processor.
http://www.redmondpie.com/download-...alaxy-s4-gt-i9505-right-now-stock-leaked-rom/
Updates are handled by the OEMs just google gives them the sources early and they have to make it work on their device. Its comparatively little work as they dont need to theme it but their GE sales compared to their normal sales are much lower so the OEMs wont care so much about updating so who knows when they'll get outdated.
When the N4 released the tech world went wild about it. People just about acknowledged these other devices. Its nothing in comparison.
Google Edition not Nexus.
Updates by OEMs not google so its not the nexus experience.
I seem to remember the Google io unveiling of the GE gs4 and they said that it would receive prompt ota updates directly from Google like all nexus devices.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
I'd read Jean-Bapiste Queru's comments in the thread I posted to Android Google group.
Oh no, not this again...
Never been the jealous type... I just have thoughts about the situation and wanted input from the community. Because every search I do for 4.3 returns results for gs4 or HTC one.

prompt updates yes, from global somewhat. global releases them, then goes to samsung/htc to add their proprietary stuff, then gets released to the public. if they were aosp supported devices(had open source drivers and such), then the hand off to samsung/htc wouldnt need to happen. since they are pure android, not sense or touch wiz, the updates for them will still be much faster than normally would be.
Those devices are shipping with 4.2[.2]. The leas are just that, leaks. And even when they get 4.3 the devices will be less optimal than the Nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus based on the features they would be able to use in stock Android and the features they would loose by not having their manufacturers' proprietary coloring layered on top the Android OS.
I overlooked the Nexus 4 the first time because it was made by LG. I haven't had the best of luck with LG phones in the past. So, I got an Xperia P. It had battery charging issues, but THE BEST AND BRIGHTEST SCREEN OF ANY DEVICE! Perfect & bright in direct sunlight. So then I tried a few more phones including an iPhone 4S and iPhone 5.
I ended up selling all the other phones and going with the N4. So glad I did. I prefer the customizable Android platform more, the wireless charging, and the POWER. All this for 1/2 of what comparable phones cost.
Just bought a Nexus 7 for use as a DSLR remote since Google lied about the USB OTG on N4. That's the other thing I missed about the Xperia P. USB OTG worked perfectly out of the box.
No, not even once

No more Nexus after nexus 6?

I hope so :crying: <3 Nexus phones.
I find it amusing that the author called the GPE GS4 higher end than the N5. There is nothing about the GS4 that's higher end.

Phonearena did say that guy's source has been reliable over the past years. So who knows? It does kinda makes sense though, but we the proud fanboys just don't want to hear this happen :fingers-crossed:
Maybe because google didn't find a solution for a new name after the nexus 6, since nexus 7 already exists

Nexus 7P(hone)
I cant see them doing it. Even though the Nexus 5 battery is horrid i love the phone. But yea after Nexus 6 what will call the next one
I read this earlier and was going to post something. I am hoping that Google is only considering this from a marketing/ flawed naming convention in there product name. But this isn't the first time Google has had naming convention/version issues. Just look at jelly bean and how it literally encompasses 3 versions of android. So let's hope they will still keep building a flagship device to symbolize what android should represent and not abandon this line all together.

The Moto G GPE is cheaper than any Nexus phone has ever been. My guess is this may be Google's way of making Motorola the default developer of Nexus devices by just calling their phone a GPE. And Motorola/Google is focused on having affordable phones so I don't see the price as being an issue. So maybe in 2016 we have 5-6 different GPE phones from different manufacturers and the Motorola one will basically replace the "Nexus" phone. At the end of the day it will not really matter other than the Nexus name being gone.

Do we really need another Nexus 4/5 naming discussion? The Nexus 7 and 10 were named after their size. The Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 could easily have been too (we will likely never know). Naming is not an issue.

I was thinking that they might go back to adopting the OEMs phone brands again like they did for the galaxy nexus. So if Sony was next they could do like a "xperia nexus". Not the most catching name but it works. Although more than likely people will still go by numbers to identify it
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Well.. is expect that Motorola will handle the nexus line if it stays.
By the way, the writer lost me at 'if there companies can push out software updates in a timely manner, there would be no reason to have a redundant nexus line'
Derp
First, waiting for updates on carrier laden releases can take forever.
Second, not everyone wants bloated versions of Android.

Hats off to google if they are planning to stop this series of Nexus phones.
Nexus series though cheap, google has no direct control. With Motorola already in their arsenal and also creating good phones like to moto x and moto g, I am sure all new Google phones should and would be from Motorola.
Though they have signed a long term contract with Samsung, I am sure it won't be for the phones but for other tech like the glass could be mass produced and probably Google is also planning to launch something like the Galaxy Gear and hence this collaboration.
Hope all goes well and we see latest tech with the Google Moto combo.
Even if the rumor is true, it doesn't mean they're going to stop selling affordable devices running vanilla Android. It probably just means they're going to drop the Nexus brand and sell the devices as Motorola.

Not true. The s4 has a very very similar CPU... Better camera... Better build quality (the s4 doesn't have a defects or RMA thread... Nexus has multiple). The only downfall to the s4 is touchwiz. @broodplank1337 has an aosp 4.4.2 ROM that runs just as good on the s4 as KK does on our nexus.
The reason I don't like this is cuz I ran GPE Roms on my S4 and they still used a lot of touchwiz framework. If they do this, and remove carrier ui framework all together, and release true aosp on these high end devices, I'm all aboard. Nexus' are cheaply built and they take shortcuts to get a bargain phone. Everyone should want the best. If it costs too much, then you can get a new job or save money.

Not really relevant. Many phones don't. The S3 didnt either, yet it had plenty of defects. It all depends if someone makes a thread or not.
The s4 was flagship though and the nexus is not high end. Its budget performance. But the S4 is older and can't keep up the performance.
