Water Damaged Permanent? - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

3 days ago, my N3 took a dive into the toilet and was in it for about 20 seconds (it was on, but asleep). It had the Otterbox case on it, though the bottom flap for the usb cable was open. I took it out, took out the battery and the cards, and put it in a zip lock bag full of rice. That's where it's been for 2 days.
Today, I took it out and placed everything back in and powered it up. Everything went normally, but there is intermittent screen flickering, some very slight, and some very noticeable. So my question is, has it been permanently damaged, or is this normal after being in water? I have taken the battery back out for now. Also, would it be advisable to remove the cover to expose the inside and maybe blow it some more in case the rice dust could be causing the problems?

Well I hope you washed it, before drying it. Ewwwwww! Honestly you should throw it away. At&t insurance, and warranty departments won't touch a device that's been in the toilet and also advise throwing it away.
I think screen flickering after being wet is normal if you're lucky. Usually it goes into brick mode. It may improve over time, or it could get worse? Water damage is sooooo unpredictable.
Since its wet and warranty is screwed, it would be very advisable to tear it apart (gently)! You have nothing to lose now. I'm almost certain there's moisture in there somewhere. It might even be between a connector causing your flicker.
Sorry if I brought ya bad news, and sorry your phone's acting up. I hope it dries out and works. And I also hope it doesn't have any poo bits left in it!!

Well, when it fell in, the toilet hadn't been used in a while. It was clean water that it fell into (clean as can be in a toilet).
Thanks.

I definitely agree that the phone is toast. Maybe not today, or tomorrow, but it will never be the same.
However, I believe that AT&T insurance will cover water damage. Warranty won't, but insurance will. I'm not sure if the OP had insurance on it or not, but I just wanted to clarify that point.

I didn't have insurance, as I've never had to use it. I take great care in my phones, and normally have people waiting to buy my old one when I get a new one. Even in this instance, it was a deliberate act, and not an accident.
In any case, I was afraid of that. Thanks for the heads up.

You mean someone deliberately gave your phone a swirly? Seems like they need to go shopping for an unlocked note 3 for you. And you need to go shopping for new friends.

Not to mention, kick that persons ass.
Someone did that to my phone, they'd be going in after it, head first.

Actually, it was the wife in a very pissed off mood. And I can hear & agree with ya on this, but unfortunately the law is on her side. ?
Fortunately for her, I don't have high values on "things". I love my "toys for boys", but they carry no weight when it comes to my family.

If my wife did that to my phone, for any reason, she'd go in with it. I paid MY hard earned money for it. I'm not a child and will not be punished like one.
To the person saying to throw it away. You are insane. All that has to be done is drying the device out completely. And it will normally be as good as it was out of the box. Even if it was completely broken, you don't throw it away. You sell it for parts to recoup some of what you put into it.
I have never thrown a device away after water damage or even after smashing it. There is always something to be made from it. It is a $700 phone. If you want to throw it away, that's you. But don't tell others to do it. Some people don't have the money to just buy another.

People actually buy parts after being treated with toilet water? They are nuts! Or it isn't advertised as a poo ridden device. I don't know why anyone would want to hold poo bacteria to their face and talk on the phone. Yuk! I don't have the money to go buy a new one either. Which is why I got the insurance! So yes. Call me crazy because I will throw this phone away if it falls in the toilet. But I want you to go up to your friends and say "my phone fell in the toilet. Will you make a phone call with it?" And then see if they don't think you're crazy. Lol

Not to sound gross... But there are less sanitary things you probably do several times a day than using a phone from a fresh clean water toilet.
For instance brushing your teeth with your tooth brush.
Seriously those things are one step below the sponge you wash your dishes with.

Stop using phone. Take it apart. Heat motherboard with heat gun. 180 degrees Fahrenheit. (no more then that, use temp gun, don't stay in one spot with heat gun for more then 5 seconds, after heated let sit to cool down without touching it) When finished, clean gentle with acetone and tooth brush(soft kind). Brush light coat of electronic Flux. Put back together.
I take no responsibility if you melt you motherboard. This is not for the faint of heart.

Most people don't know how to pull the phone apart, and even half of the people that do, don't have a heat gun. (Me). While it is a great option, it is definitely not the option for everyone.
He'll, most people don't even know what Flux is or where to get acetone. Especially oil free acetone.

Flux and acetone are fine. However, Flux is not needed.
Acetone wouldn't be used on the plastic. Just the mobo. It also evaporates at a faster rate than 97% isopropyl alcohol. It is perfectly safe to use.

Sorry about that. I used the Flux first before heat gun. That way solder don't get dried out. And then the acetone cleans it off. I've never done this on a phone. Have done it on other electronics. (I make sure I use a water proof case) . Sometimes this works sometimes it don't. But as was stated, what's there to lose unless a miracle happened and the phones good. I just know if there's water inside, it won't come out on its own.

Thank you for clearing that up. I see the purpose of the Flux.
It is a great idea, and does work. I have done similar things to reflow Xbox 360s and dry out phones in the oven.
It's not always 100% but I have had a very high success rate.

What graydiggy said, dry it out completely. Must be some water in there.
Personally I'd just throw it in the rice for a bit--sometimes though, moisture is really stuck at which point I use a vacuum to get it out. Careful of small parts though.
Spilled olive oil all over my phone a while back. Worst thing ever. Vacuum was my only option.

[Help] Drop phone in Redbull and Vodka

Well like the title says I got drunk and had the phone on my lap with no case and the cup was in between my legs and I leaned over like a drunk ass forgetting my phone was in my lap then splash.
I know that there are other treads in other forums about this but since our phones are inseparable so we cant remove the battery I have no idea what to do! i put it in rice for like 3 days in my car and now what i plug it in my charging light just blinks and it never turns on. I know that light means there is a charging error but does anyone know if there is any way to fix it without having to take it apart? or sending it back to sprint?
I know its not the water that ruins the silicon but that its the electricity from the battery so im wondering if I fried my charging port or even worse my board?
thanks in advance.

Nope, if it won't charge it's dead. The phone is basically impossible to take apart without damaging the shell, most insurance companies won't cover water damage, and even if the rice trick had worked it never works for all that long.
Maybe that is a sign you should drink less?
I did the same thing (with beer) at a pens game and my ol HTC hero but rice saved it. That's actually how I discovered xda and rooting. But I digress... Sorry, sounds like it's toast.

I feel your pain. I was at a party as well when my drunk ass left my phone on a table and beer spilled beer all over my one. My phone immediately started bootlooping. The sad part was that I was so drunk, I hadn't even realized what had happened. I thought what the hell is wrong with my phone? Oh well, I'll fix it tomorrow when I'm sober. The whole night the thing kept bootlooping until it was dead. The next morning I wake up, hung over mind you, I pick up my phone and look at my tpu case and realize there is some liquid in my case. That's when i realized the reality of what occurred last night. Beer had spilled all over my phone!! I let it dry for over a week but I am certain that I have a bootlooping paper weight in my hands now. When i plug it in to charge, it turns on, goes to the htc screen and then shuts back down again. The same bootlooping pattern that occurred the night of the spill. It seems as though the phone wants to charge but cant hold enough juice because Of the constant bootlooping. The sad part is aesthetically, my phone is in perfect condition. I look at it and think to myself, what a waste. The lesson of today for everyone is : KEEP YOUR ONE AWAY FROM ANY WATER SOURCE THAT COULD POTENTIALLY GET YOUR PHONE WET. Especially when drunk and being careless.

Hmm? This should work on all devices as far as I can tell. The company sells the S3 and i5 pretreated, but that doesn't mean we can't do this to our phones.
I'm thinking for the ultimate protection:
Ballistic Aspira case
Mime Ghost screen protector
Liquipel Coating
Total cost: $25 + $25 + $60 (0.o) = $110 for a peace of mind.
It'll be pocketable but pretty much indestructible.

If it's still not working, try bathing it in rubbing alcohol, preferably above 90%. Pure isopropyl alcohol is non-conductive so it should clean off what's left of the vodka while not harming your phone anymore than it already is. Worth a shot

Open a Xperia z to manually dry the speaker?

I was in the beach 2 days ago and I brought my xperia Z along. I decided that it was a good idea to take underwater videos and pictures above the water. They all looked great. The only problem is that, its been two days since that happened and my speaker is still muffled. It usually gets dry in a few hours, this time I'm worried it might have damaged for good. I believe that maybe little grains of sand made their way through the grill and are keeping the sound low or something else. Anyways, just wanted to ask if anyone can advise me on what to do. I had my C6002 since its release and have submerge it in numerous pools but never on a beach. Any help will be appreciated, thanks
Sent from my C6602 using xda premium
I wouldn't recommend open the device, you could lose the water resistance altogether.
My only advice would be letting the device on rice for a while with the flaps open.
Anyway, my take on this subject is this:
I wonder now why everyone thinks that kind of water resistance will make the phone indestructible.
For me, that water resistance (not waterproof) just makes me feel more confident about my device surviving water related accidents.
Just taking the device to the swimming pool defeats its certification (2 m deep pools are not uncommon, you know), splashing, swimming, just moving around under water, or even worst jumping into the water violently just multiplies the pressure around your device by more than those 0.1 bar.

Amazingly, I left the phone over night on a bag of rice and not only did it fix the issue it had another unexpected effect. Now, when I wet the speaker its back to normal almost immediately. I was at a lake yesterday, used the phone to record under water, take photos, and guess what? It was fully loud each time almost immediately after I got out of the water. This phone hasn't seize to impress. I highly recommend to consider the rice. Often times, naturally aspired solutions are the better choice.

Bent Xperia Z1

I don't know exactly how to describe this. But my Xperia Z1 seems slightly bent at one side. The power button side. Look at the pic. Lying on a flat surface. Compare the power button side and the usb side. In honesty, my phone has been recently exposed to a lotta heat. Abuja, Nigeria is really hot. The phone got so hot that day it actually started damaging the carrying pouch. Should I be worried?

but isn't that more like a hump on the battery part?
seems logical if it is a hump... batteries are never good with high heat exposure
well try putting i on a flat table and get a shot from the sides while the phone is lying on the back and front
Check this
and yes you should be worried ... more so for your health!
Did you keep it in your back pocket?
I came across two images of Xperia Z1 Bent on Sony Mobile forum. It seems very sad that users are saying that they didn't put it back pocket and not at all sat on it.
so I put up a post here to make users aware of this http://www.xperiaguide.com/2013/11/17/xperia-z1-screen-and-body-bent-appears/ and @dante2086 if I have your permission can I include your pic in above post of mine ?

Yeah, but I think I've adapted to it. As for the phone, the problem is Sony mobile, has poor, if not nearly non-existent representation in Nigeria. Most Sony phones are sold via third party representatives in Nigeria, and I don't think too much of them. If it does get worse though, I might be forced to send it in. As u can see from the pics it's not too severe. And I kept the phone in water for ten minutes today just to verify if it was still waterproof, apparently it still is.
incredible pictures.....

Aluminium!
A metal frame!
change its shape in normal earth temperature !!!
u r kiddin!
even water needs more than 80-90C to change its shape!
but for example aluminium body of XZ1 change because of maybe 60C !! (60C for warmest city on earth!)
-
and some users talked about this problem without any reason !!!
no caused phenomena are for quantum world.
in our normal world there s always reason for everything.
and reason of something like this is users misbehaving...

They sat on it or applied some other force to it. The laws of physics disagree with "it just bent itself." As for heat, the melting point of aluminum is 660 celcius... that's over 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. And that's almost how hot it would have to get to start bending "by itself."
Smartass all fo you....
The aluminum frame is fabricated it such a way that IT CAN ACTUALLY BEND ITSELF! If the stress tensor in the alimonum block was highly distorted before the chipping process THE FRAM WILL BENT ITSELF AFTER A WHULE to relive inner materials pressure...
This can defenetly be cause by wrong fabricatimg procedures....

yeah my z1 seems bent too. i've noticed it shortly after getting it. girlfriend thinks i'm crazy but i'm sure. i did put it off as an optical illusion due to the port covers not being 100% parallel to the frame sometimes, but even on a table it wobbles, so it must be bent.
very disconcerting to say the least.

Could be that the battery is swollen due to overcharging, or the aluminium could have bent, melting point doesn't mean that it can be made into a durable metal at lower heat, but i find that unlikely, i'm putting my money on the battery swelling.

Yeah, I thought so too. It happened to my K700, but that significantly affected my battery life. But since uninstalling CNN app and installing 4.3, my battery life is great.

Could still be m8, i've seen batteries swell until they literally broke the devices, i have a device for transferring data from any mobile device to any other mobile device, called celibrite, I like i div had it charging all the time and the battery ended up like a massive blue bag (swollen) it broke the front sim slot and pushed the screws out through their threads, nothing was stopping it, in terms of battery life i have to say when it was disconnected i didn't noticed a drop in battery life either, although it was never unplugged for very long, as for my phone I have it on a timer at night so it never gets more than an hour of overcharge.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingavon-24...TF8&qid=1389723209&sr=8-1&keywords=plug+timer
I see. Well the bending doesn't seem to be getting worse, so if it's a battery swelling, its safe to say it's stopped right?

Sprint M8
This has been floating around for a couple weeks now. It does very well in the test. Yes.
It has since come out that it is ipx3 certified. Which means it can take splashes.. etc. Although submerging it is more then a splash. All in all, its a good unadvertised feature. But I won't be testing it out myself.
Waterproof and water resistant are 2 completely different things.

I still don't understand how his camera overheating and running out of space on the SD card made the phone rotate under water.
Haha it didn't make the phone rotate underwater. It caused him to reposition his filming phone so it was filming from a different angle. The underwater phone never moved.

Amazing that the edge of the sink didn't move at all most of the times but the phone and surface of the water did (the edge of the sink moved 2 times, but in 4 of the phone moves it didn't). The phone in the water was definitely moved and the hand moving it was edited out. Changing the filming phone position wouldn't have caused ripples in the water.

The bottom of the sink is round, perhaps overtime the phone just settled to the lowest point? Makes sense to me...

All I can say is, either way, whether the phone was moved or not, it was obviously submerged in water for a decent period of time. It was at least a few minutes at a time. That's a pretty solid statement, although I'm still not brave enough to test it for myself.... I'm sure an iPhone or most other phones would be done after touching water. I had a Blackberry back in the day that fell into a shallow puddle for maybe two seconds. It never worked again.

I put mine HTC M8 into bowl with water completely for about a minute. Only thing I realized headphone icon showed up in notification bar. Also when I pulled out sd card was wet on edges . But SIM card was completely dry. Phone worked and played video under water about 2 inches down. After was taken out I just wiped it with paper towel and works perfectly..... DONT TRY IT! I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR DEVICE.

Does anyone swim with their S5?

So, I just got this s5 and decided to take the water resistancs to a new level.
I first ended up going to Cedar Point Amusement park, and went to the water park with it. Took a few video's with it on the slides, etc. Then went to the Wavepool , kept in my pock so it was no more then a few feet under water at any time.
Worked great, phone was still working. Just an FYI, if you do use it underwater, your signal strength will die, no cell signal underwater guys, I first thought the phone fried, but then relized, that was the issue, and then in a min, 4G was back! (I was freaked when I realized my pebble told me I was not connected.) Played with my Sphero for a bit.
a week later, I was at a festival doing some shooting, I was invited to the pool, with all the drugged up artists ,.. They all thought I was on every drug known to man because I brought my phone in the pool to take pictures (a few under water ones too!)
So far so good. I will admit that the phone at no time was fully submerged for more then 5 or 10 min at a time. but the phone still works great, and just needs a rince and dry to get the touch screen to work nomaly again.

my theory, is if I am going to actualy do long swimming with it, I will put it my waterproof bag, but jumping into the pool for a quick jaunt, playing with my Sphero, or a waterslide where my phone is not UNDER water for more then a few min at a time, I will risk it.
I never keep phones long enough anyways.

Chlorine will destroy your waterproof capabilities.
Also your speaker will get saturated and sound like crap - eventually the phone will have a weak speaker resulting in popping/crackling sounds. Just FYI...You can take pictures and the phone can get wet but if your doing it everyday of summer, bad things could happen. I think the Active can do it better than the reg S 5, but I wont go swimming with it. Maybe take pictures once in a while in the pool.
? Makes No sense to me but hey i dont have a silver spoon in my mouth. Even if i could i woulnt cause its a waist of good hardware. Maybe everyone should be poor once in thier life and would appreciate things more.

I highly doubt the chlorine content in a public pool is high enough to cause the waterproof seals on the S5 to deteriorate.

It's probably not high enough to break the seal, yes, but your headphone jacks are being exposed to chlorine, as are your speakers. Filtered water at home wouldn't corrode the equipment as fast since... well that's chlorine's job, you're not drinking chlorinated water at home. But yeah, the speakers and headphone jack aren't directly part of the board if I'm correct, instead they are attatched to it (I suck at explaining things, bear with me please) by the looks of it, probably explaining why you can buy the headphone jack and speakers separately as replacement parts instead if the whole board. The reason why the slip is on the charging port is to protect the board, which is in more cases a lot more important than sound equipment. I hope I explained that generally well for no sleep in 36 hours.

and some people take the risk and deal with the consequences. I have taken the phone in the pool, and when I am done, I do clean it off, do I plan on doing it on a regular basis, NO, I only did it because I was thinking, I had 30 days to return this phone if it explodes, so I took the risk, in general, If I ever do plan on going to the pool in the future, I have a waterproof bag that I use.
Now the shower, man, is nice to change the song and see whats playing. but I don't submerge it.
Long story short, I was asking for outcomes, I was not asking if anyone was a spoiled brat, had more money then god, did't care if the phone exploded or whatever, those are just troll answers, I was looking for experiences of people willing to take risks, what their device's outcome was, not their financial outcome.
and about chlorine and the seals, that is a legit concern, just like salt in salt water pools. I did not think of that, and this is why i asked.
Water + electricity = busted ****. Common sense. And when the first battery does explode (not 100% on if the battery will do this) from taking into elements they have no business being in I'm sure someone will jump on some lawsuit even though it was there fault cause we all know water and electricity go so well together.

What? The phone is built to withstand a certain degree of water, hence the iP67 rating, I don't underatand why you are jumping to these astronomically implausible conclusions.
I don't know if you have seen the videos on YouTube but the S5 is highly resistant to water, even more so than the IP67 rating would lead you to believe.
Batteries can explode from various things, sitting too long can cause them to puff up, a direct impact/force can also cause it to explode.
Water+Electricity is bad but telling people their battery will explode if their S5 encounters water is simply doing a disservice to them. There are limits to the S5's water resistance as there are limits to many other things in life, we respect those limits and stay within the designated "safe" boundaries. There is no difference with the S5, respect the limits of the water resistance and continue enjoying the feature.

The battery exploding is more or less hypothetical as I said I wasn't a 100% and furthermore like I said water and electricity don't mix. One little flaw in you precious waterproof seals and poof your phones done. I myself have noticed just from charging my phone the USB flap is already loose so no I would not trust submerging my phone in water at any depth. and as for the waterproof rating i would think that applies to things like getting caught in the rain on your phone or dropping it in the toilet and ouickly removing it. Not jumping in a pool or going scuba diving and taking pictures underwater. Purposely Taking your phone into water or any other liquid is just STUPID it's water resistant not watertight or waterproof. Do with your phone what you will I just hate seeing hardware abused even if it is not mine. Sorry if this upsets anyone just my opinion.

The IP67 rating means Ingress Protection, the S5 in this case is 100% Dust proof as it has the highest value on the scale for dust resistance. The 2nd number in which the S5 has a 7 means water resistant at depths of up to 1m for up to 30 minutes, there is only one level above the S5's rating. This rating is given based on standardized testing so assuming you follow the specified limits and make sure your port covers are sealed, you should be fine taking your device with you in up to 1m of water.
Regarding the loosening of the port cover, that is a major point of concern. My port cover is still very tight fitting but I am have been extremely cautious in making sure it stays at 90° from the opening and doesn't bend in any other direction as to not weaken the flap.
