Did your MHL cable work for the M8?

I have a cheap one I got for my Samsung s3, and it has an adapter that goes between the phone and the cable and if I don't use that adapter it works fine. I think the Samsung interface has a switched wire that's why it needs it. So not all cables are the same but if the universal one had a removable adapter it will probably work.

How did you guys got it to work? I bought two different MHL 5pin adapters and none worked. The MHL symbol does appear on the phone but there is no image on the TV. I dont undestand and I am getting desperate, does someone has any tips?
Cheers

A "cheap" MHL cable will probably be MHL 1.0, which won't support 1080p (1080i @ 30Hz max rather than the 1080p @ 60Hz that MHL 2.0 supports)
Most MHL cables are also designed for use with recent Samsung devices, which use a proprietary MHL implementation, which is NOT compatible with non-Samsung devices.
The MHL "standard" is almost totally useless, mostly thanks to Samsung creating this confusion, plus the fact that almost no-one ever categorically states what version of the format (1.0, 2.0 and now 3.0) their devices are.
The new Sony devices support MHL 3.0, if they use a standard implementation then their adapters might be the way to go, assuming they eventually turn up and don't cost an arm and a leg.

Anyone with T-Mobile firmware can please confirm if MHL works?

SlimPort - a new kind of magic? I Doubt it.

Hey all,
seeing all the threads about OTG and the difference to MHL, I thought I'd try to clear things up a bit:
Is this just another name for MHL?
No, it's not. MHL and SlimPort do the same, but in different ways. It's not the same and accessories are not compatible. You will need a new adapter, e.g.
Aren't we being 'appled' here?
Just a little, really. SlimPort does have several advantages, such as support for more than just HDMI and the freedom not to connect a power source, if you don't want to. Also it helps make the device as cheap as it is, because while MHL requires fees, SlimPort does not.
Does this device support USB OTG?
No, not yet. It should be possible though. Analogix (the makers of SlimPort) state their product will pass USB OTG signals to a host controller. Is there a host controller? Yes, there is! The N4's CPU includes one Figures it's a matter of support in the kernel, someone will likely get to this in the near future.
Sounds pretty impressive, huh? I'm afraid it isn't. While most manufacturers switched to a 11-pin design, SlimPort still uses 5-pin according to the whitepaper. Now, what does that mean? There's 3 data lines less, usual USB connections are not even possible, says the whitepaper. So it will most likely not be possible to use video output and OTG at the same time.
Most people will not care about this, but it will be a big deal for those - including me - who want to use it as a 'PC replacement'.
Correct me, if I'm wrong, but I did some thorough research and believe I should be right with my statements here.
Regards,
dobbi10k
I'm disappointed with this switch to SlimPort.
1. I just want to get the display of my phone to the TV. So to me MHL and SlimPort do the same thing and it doesn't matter if they do it differently.
2. I feel "Apple'd" big time. Only one company makes these SlimPort adapters that I could find and they charge $30 for it. The MHL adapter I already own can't be used. Argh.
And I kept hearing about how I wouldn't need a power cable and that was suppose to be an advantage to SlimPort. But reading on their website, it sounds like the TV or monitor must support SlimPort too in order for the power over HDMI to work. Standard HDMI ports from the TV to the adapter will still need a separate power source.
I doubt SlimPort will catch on and I know I won't be spending $30 for an adapter that nothing else will probably ever use.
God, I need a freaking Miracast box that will work with my Nexus 4 in the worst way.
I think you pay the fees with the cable rather than possibly paying fees with the phone for a feature you may not want. I think this is why the cable costs more.
I could be wrong though and its just a company profitting because they are currently the only supplier.

I thought the micro usb sockets only had 5 pins anyway, so where the hell doe the 6 pins come from?
Edit: Galaxy S III has a 11pin port apparently. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_High-Definition_Link

No, that was true for MHL, either the screen had to have a power output on the HDMI cable or you had to connect an external power source. SlimPort however makes this unneccessary, you CAN connect an external power source to charge your phone, but you don't have to.
If I already bought an MHL adapter, I would probably feel apple'd too, got you point, though

The standard is maintained by VESA and it's completely free. However, the HDMI standard still requires fees, which you pay with the cable. A display port adapter could be made way cheaper. But the latter is true, too. All these adapters could be made cheaper.

This phone doesn't do MHL but it uses Slimport. As far as I know there are only hdmi and vga adapters. Maybe find hdmi to composite rca? Not sure if it would work though...

No, sorry. If you have a computer monitor then you could do slimport to vga but current devices aren't made with output to crt tv in mind.
I use the Netgear PTV3000 with this HDMI to Composite / AV Video Converter and it works fine. Miracast has a noticeable lag. I also use this slimport adapter directly to an HDMI TV but I haven't tried it with the HDMI to composite adapter. I saw one Miracast to HDMI + AV adapter by Visson.

MHL 3.0 Adapter...

I have been scouring the web & even overseas manufacturers looking for anyone that can provide a MHL 3.0 Adapter. Has anyone seen one on the market yet? Some of the overseas sites are poorly worded, MHL 3.0 USB, but upon further investigation, all have been MHL 2.0 with support for USB 3.0.
If anyone has a source for these, in either single unit or batch lots for resale, please let me know.

NO> Any that aupprts the 5-pin should work fine. It is just that 2.0 & 3.0 don't need external power, if supported by the device, & 3.0 has greater speed & bandwidth capabilities. 4K video & 7.1 surround sound (L-PCM) support.

Except that one states in big red letter that external power is REQUIRED. WHich would make it MHL 1.0. It also states 1080p, again MHL 3.0 supports 4k video. Most of the MHL 2.0 devices also support at least USB 3.0, that one supports USB 2.0, which again supports it being an MHL 1.0 device.
That's the thing, I have found a few that claim to be MHL 3, but none of them seem to pan out to actually be MHL 3.0. Most of the time when you contact to call them on it, or inquire, you get zero response. Ebay is pretty notorious for knock offs too, like the 128Gb & even 64Gb UH1 Micro SD cards.
So there is no mhl 3.0 5pin out there adapter yet.
Which 2.0 5 pin adapter should I be
buying for the HTC One m8?

Good question. I am researching that now. I find it hard to believe that a year old standard still isn't supported by accessory manufacturers, even though it is by the device manufacturers.
I'll let you know what ones I try & how it goes.

That's the same exact one I bought for my LG G2. I assumed the G2 supported MHL, but in fact it supported DisplayPort, so I had this laying around for a while, and it works just fine for the M8.

It might be a year old standard, but devices/phones supporting it are only just now being released. So, accessory manufacturers have had no reason to manufacture any adapters until now. Hopefully it won't be too long until we start seeing some now that there are some devices that can take advantage of it.

Thanks. That's the one I tried and didn't work but maybe it was defective. Did anyone bought that one also? Does it work on the HTC One m8?
For what its worth the one I bought I have to plug things in in a specific order or it won't work. I believe it is power, then HDMI, then MHL into M8. I have to do this each time, if I unplug it from the phone and just plug it back in it won't work until I unplug everything and reconnect in that order.
Nice, thanks for the tip

I finally received a different MHL adapter I bought but it still dosent work. I did what you said, first power, then HDMI and then MHL to the phone. The symbol of MHL beeing connected appears but there is onde more no image on the TV. I even tried connecting first power, then MHL and then HDMI but it´s the same thing. Can someone give me some tips, please? I am getting desperate
Did you ever get this figured out? I just used mhl for the first time on my m8. I used the same cable I did for my m7. It's a
Skiva 6.5 feet MHL (Micro USB) to male HDMI cable. I had trouble at first but here's how I got it to work flawlessly: first I plugged everything in, no particular order... Next I plugged in the micro usb part to my m8 while the tv input was still on my normal everyday input... I waited until my red charging light turned on my m8 then I switched to the correct tv input. My m8 went into mhl mode and I streamed a movie perfectly.
I tried switching the tv input first then plugging in my phone and it wouldn't work. But, when I left it on my normal input, then plugged my phone in and saw it was charging, then changed inputs.... Success!
Thanks, I will try if that works. But I've got little hopes, to be honest

MHL to RCA?

Howdy,
I have a dvd player in my VW camper, is there a cable anyone could recommend to go from MHL to RCA? Will it work on a custom ROM? There's a lot of conflicting info out there. Thanks!

you can do a search on amazon for a mhl 2 rca and come up with a few results for that cable. and as far as custom roms go. i would imagine it would work on a touchwiz based rom(jedimasterx2 would be a good example here) as far as the likes of non touchwiz based roms(ie. aokp) it wouldn't work as allshare is not included. hopefully i answered your question. can't tell ya much more then that. maybe someone else can chime in on the cable who has maybe purchased one. i unfortunately only have the mhl2hdmi not the rca varient so.
Sorry, I should have been more clear. It's a dvd player/in dash receiver, so it has rca aux inputs. I looked into those cables and a lot of reviews say they don't work and a few actually say it won't work with custom roms, which to me sounds kinda strange.

it wont work with a simple cable.
MHL only outputs digital signal so no analog RCA, you need something to convert it with a scan converter from HDMI to RCA, which require external power.
Also it wont work on customs roms because MHL uses proprietary drivers and only works on stock roms.

That's what I feared. Thanks for the confirmation.
I wish such a cable or some workaround existed, I would've been able to hook up my Note 2 to my car's Pioneer touchscreen system
I got an mhl to HDMI adapter and then a HDMI to rca converter from Monoprice. Works perfect

HDMI MHL

Good morning, mhl Clable know of any, other than the original sony functioning ??
Thank you
Yeah I would like to know this as well ? I'm struggling to find MHL cables that are announced as 3.0 ones. Most of the time, they don't specify anything.
Any way to be sure to get a compatible 3.0 cable ?
I bought a cheap one on ebay
1080P-Micro-USB-MHL-to-HDMI-HDTV-CABLE-ADAPTER-For-HTC-One-M8-LG-Sony-Xperia-Z1item27e2c0cb36
cost me a fiver (GBP) and works with my Z1 Compact and my Z2 Tablet.
plugs into my older Panasonic (non-smart) HD TV.
You have to power it with micro-usb, tho'
