Speaker issue - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
The Boomsound speakers on my One are a HUGE disappointment. My Galaxy Y ($99) can produce louder sound than my HTC One. I was really looking forward to the speakers, so im quite disappointed. Is this normal?? Or are the speakers really that bad ??

The speakers volume got nerfed with an ota update long time ago because of to many blown speakers to repair under warranty. That is probably why you are disappointed. I remember when my phone was on the old sf version, they were amazing.
There are some mods you could try to boost the speakers sound, never tried them personally.

Thanks for the help. But im on InsertCoin Sixth Sense. So, this OTA patch is part of the custom ROMs as well? Or is it only the stock rom which is patched ?

Yes for all custom roms too. It got patched a while ago. I think it got patched at fw 1.29.

On the AROMA installer for IC there is an option for 'speaker boost'. Not sure of the exact wording. Have you tried that option?

Pretty much. Still cant figure how Samsungs's lowest end 2011 model can even compete with the One, let alone beat it in one of the One's most touted features. Sad

My speakers are pretty darn loud. Of course I've only had this M7 for about a month so I really can't compare 'before and after'.

I had the same issue with my speakers, turned out that the grills were full of dirt that wasn't visible. I just got a fine paint brush and sort of stabbed the grills so the brush could poke through the tiny holes. 2 minutes of doing that and my One was 3 times louder lol... Hope this helps

I'm sure it's a problem with many HTC One's. I didn't even notice a decrease in volume until I noticed that one was louder than the other. Then once I cleaned both of them I was like "Holy Shizz"

Poll: Is one speaker louder than the other?

A day after receiving my phone, I began to notice the bottom speaker was louder than the top. Now I'm wondering if this is common.
Holding the phone about 6-8 inches away from you, play a video or mp3 of talking (standup comedy/video blog/etc) with the volume 3-4 notches below max. Do one of the speakers sound slightly/noticeably louder?

Part of the update to the international version is a better stereo audio mix.

Thanks for the reply.
Maybe that would fix it. With it my Sprint unit only being a week old, I'd rather not risk it to wait and see. Lets Talk is sending me another one as we speak (type?). Gonna test my new unit to see if it has the same problem.
I actually might have waited it out if it weren't for the fact that the top speaker died at one point, requiring a soft reset to fix. Hopefully I just got a bad unit because I love this phone.
I noticed this on one that we took out of the box to play with. Was watching a few youtube videos on it and I noticed that the bottom speaker was slightly louder than the top. Otherwise it wouldn't really be noticeable imho, seems like a software mixing problem on the device we tested. Yours could have been defective if it was significantly louder than the top speaker.

That's exactly what I'm experiencing. It's a minor volume difference, but enough to be noticeable. I almost started to believe one of my ears were less capable than the other, lol. I'll try out the replacement and see if it's an improvement. Wish I didn't have to set everything up again, though.

Don't be a smartass. I have this same issue. How exactly is flipping the phone supposed to help if one side is louder than the other? If i flip it over, ONE SIDE IS STILL LOUDER THAN THE OTHER. smh....
My bottom one is louder too I think, not by much tho...

I can barely notice a difference between the two speakers. If you didn't post this I probably would never even detected it but there is a very slight difference between the two speakers.
My apologies to any glass shattering moments created for anyone who reads this topic.
I've confirmed the volume imbalance by venturing to different retail stores and testing their models, along with the two I've posessed. Each time I've been able to have it presented to me in random orientations and, with my eyes closed, identify which side is the bottom speaker. It's kind of a neat party trick at this point, lol.
I've become used to it, assuming it to be a software fix away from perfection. Here's hoping HTC notices and balances the two.
Just got my black sprint model 2 days ago. Seems equal to me. Maybe I'm just not that anal.

My bottom speaker is very slightly louder. I thought it was a hardware fault but turn beats on and both speakers level out perfectly! Can't complain!
Mine seems to be well balanced
Hi Guys
Just got my New One and Im having the same issue.. the bottom speaker is ever so slightly louder than the top.. On its side, the SIM tray down over, front cam at the top, listening to TuneIn Radio Pro and any music In the player.. the Right speaker is louder. Im running 422 / 2.24.401.8.
Are these defective units and should I replace it or is there a fix out for it.
Thanks
my top is louder.. for sure.. but it still sounds great to me.. i didt get my phone new.. i traded my S4 for the ONE.. from someone off craigslist.. the dude i got it from his first htc one died.. so they sent him a replacement he had it for 5 days the we traded phone
Stereo is never equally output balanced..which is why its stereo.
My top speaker is louder. Over the updates the overal sound volume has been decreased. Does anyone know of a volume fix?

Have a m7ul, not a Sprint One, but I noticed my bottom speaker is MUCH louder than my top one. To the point where there's no noticeable difference in volume/sound if I cover the top speaker. Had anyone noticed if the ROM makes any difference? Stock sense vs Play Edition vs CM?
I'm on CM 10.2 nightly right now. I did have a lot of difficulty hearing people on phone calls on ARHD Sense though.

Headphone jack problem?

When I plug my beats headphones in (the ones coming with the One), it doesn't seem like they're plugged in correctly. Like if I twist or turn the headphones jack a bit, I get a crackling/distorted sound, but the headphones are plugged in as far as they can go. I even tried applying some force but they're as far in as they can go.
Sound faulty to me mate, do they work fine in any other device like an mp3 player or another phone? Worth checking ... to see if it's the phones or the phone lol

Tried them in another phone and it seems it's the same. The headphones don't seem to wanna plug in correctly. I tried a few other headsets on the One and they all connect as they should?
Why can't phone makers make completely flat jacks?
Lol who knows mate. My biggest gripe with the headphone jack on the one is that it's at the top. It should be at the bottom, that way when I take my phone out of my pocket, the screen is the right way up and facing me instead of it being the opposite.

I don't really care if the jack is at the top or the bottom as long as it's on the top or bottom and not on any of the sides.

I think it could be that these are beats headphones. Anyone knows that HTC has an big deal with beats. Do they sound good? I haven't used mine yet because I have an AKG over ear headphones, which sounds very good.

I'd bet money on the earphones being Beats, just unbranded ones ... I have used mine and compared to some Sony ones, which I paid about 70 squid for, they sound every bit as good, if not better ... Fact is, Beats or not, they sound very good and are by far, the best earphones I've ever received with a phone, or mp3 player for that matter.

The jack isn't the issue, because other headphones work well. It seems to be the headphone pin. The thing you insert into the jack.

The iPhone 5 was my previous phone after my Xperia Ray so when I traded up to my One (the mere suggestion of anything bettering an iPhone would have fanboys abusing me about now) I decided to keep the Apple Pods as they call them lol but tbh they are nothing special, certainly not as good as the ones with the One, my opinion of course but I do consider myself somewhat of an Audiophile.

Yes, that's what I meant - the jack/plug on the headphones, not the socket on the phone handset.

But the new "earpods" are slightly better than the old ones until the iphone 4s. But I'm not an audiophile like you. I would use those in ear headphones only for sports or somewhat. At home I'm using an over ear headphone from akg because they are much more comfortable and sounds better for me.

While the headphones aren't bad they probably aren't beats. they are built very cheaply and are not anywhere as bass heavy as beats would be. Mine died about a week after using them with computer.

Same issue here... Did you fix it?
I think this is because there is a difference in frequencies of the sound output from both the speakers. The upper one tends to give more treble while the lower one has better mids, that's why the lower one sounds louder. Hold the speakers to your ear one by one and see the difference.

The difference is so huge that I don't have to keep it to my ear to notice it. This is the actual problem that I have. The top one is tooooooo low compared to the bottom one and not just while listening to music/movies but even while having a phone call, the in-call volume is incredible low. It seams like total volume of the top speaker decreased ten times.
Right now I'm an exchange emails process with HTC technical support... I'm curious what is their final verdict going to be.

Just try brushing it with a toothbrush (center part of the top grille). Actual service involves disassembly of the phone and then replacement of the speaker. HTC should be able to get it done without any further damage

Guys...all you have to do is clean the speakers with an air duster. I have this issue often with my phone too. Sometimes even my notification light gets really dim, all I do is clear out the dust from the speaker grills and the sound and lights are back to normal.
I totally agree for the air duster but it's not easy to get your hands on one....

Biggest Disappointment? Speaker.

I've been really satisfied with the overall performance and feel of the Nexus 5. The only problem I have with the device is the anemic speaker quality. I feel like I get more vibration from the phone than I actually get sound out of the device.
Its not a deal breaker for me (I'd rather have a reference device than speakers on the front that sound good like the HTC One) but it is a concern. Not sure if I'll be able to even hear it ring in louder environments.
I think the speaker is like 1000x better than the Nexus 4 speaker.
I don't like the placement of the speaker. I keep putting my thumb over it cause of the way I hold my phone.

I agree. Speakers suck in this phone. However that is only if you turn the volume all the way up. If you leave it at 80% sound is clear. Not too loud though....

Its reasons like this that almost anything you read has to be taken with a grain of salt, some say the speaker is loud, others say its barely audible. I mean come on, how can anyone make an informed decision when every detail of the phone gets praises and boos at the same time.

Yeah if you didn't do any modifications and didn't physically damage the phone, sounds like it's a hardware issue and Verizon should take care it.
