[Q] Will "Unlocked GSM" Moto X from US work in India? - Moto X Q&A

Hello everyone,
As you all know there was a sale just for one day on Moto X over in US (May 1st), I ordered the 32gb version for myself. As I am in India and will be using this phone here, on the choose a carrier page I selected: GSM Unlocked (includes T-Mobile Sim) option.
My question is: Will this phone support Indian Sim cards? Also does this phone support LTE? And which version (AT&T or T-Mobile) will I get as below GSM Unlocked, it`s written AT&T and T-Mobile 4G LTE with Global HSPA?
Which one is better in terms of future software updates?

I don't see why not. Buy away!

I am confused because even though I selected GSM Unlocked version it mentiones that it includes the T-Mobile Sim. So, I am wondering will it only work with the T-Mobile SIM??

I'm sure it had something to do with T-Mobile's overseas network. Just pop in your SIM and disregard the one it comes with.

Thanks, I am yet to receive the phone here in India as I just purchased it yesterday from the Moto US Store. It might take 10-12 days for it to get delivered here at my door step.

Great! I how you enjoy the phone, you won't regret your purchase!

Did it work
Did u receive the moto x ...did it work in india

The GSM Unlocked (ships with T-Mobile SIM) is the same as the GSM Developer Edition, and "T-Mobile" edition.
Per Moto's web site it supports...
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
3G UMTS bands: 850/900/ AWS/1900/2100 MHz with HSPA+ up to 42 Mbps (B5/B8/B4/B2/B1)
4G LTE bands: 700/AWS/1900MHz (B17/B4/B2)
There is a chance you may need to adjust APN settings. And there are a few threads about making USA Moto X work in India that you may want to look for because I don't know the specifics.

A very bad thing happened; Motorola USA cancelled my order and didn`t even tell me the reason for that. After that I had no choice but to buy the phone locally from Flipkart. :crying:
Anyways, I got the 16GB variant.

Moto USA doesn't support orders outside of the USA. If you ordered with a non-USA shipping address, or "bill to" address, that is why they canceled it.

This is where I purchased my X2 when it first came out.
The X2a is especially for North America...
X2a has NAM 3G bands while the X2i has EURO 3G Bands. That is the only difference.
NAM models always have a higher price, its always been that way.

Any difference in performance?
nope....no performance changes
unless you need NAM 3G the X2i would be a better buy, and euro spec phones are prone to more frequent updates

Could you please let me know exactly what site is? I will probably buy the X2/X2a in the next month and am looking for the X2a but don't know where to find. Although this price difference may be an important consideration.
Thanks
if it's like the x1i vs. x1a then the difference in performance is that 30fps video capture is disabled in x1a because of a patent issue between qualcomm and broadcomm and yes it's a hardware issue that can't be fixed by roms or software
but so is the i models not being able to use the USA 3g bands
yes the only difference i notice too is the 850 umts instead of 900 umts band on the NAM edition, pricing wise you might wanna check bestbuy.com because in the states, bestbuy and sonystyle.com actually had the x1 for sale back then for 799.99 I would believe the same will apply to the X2. I am not too sure about the united states market as to i live in Toronto Canada, but the company i work for Rogers wireless will not be getting the X2 yet or at least anytime soon that i know of, instead we will be releasing the X10 sometime in Q2 expecting a mid March release.
Back to the difference in the umts band, i know some carriers in the us has the 1900 umts in certain cities. I know that major cities like NYC will have support for 1900 umts bandwidth, therefore an x2i will be able to connect onto 3g there. If anyone is planning to get the x2i and is planning to use it in Toronto or Vancouver, most carries like Bell, Rogers, Telus will support the 1900 umts band, and the speed and coverage is not bad unless you are in the basement or somewhere surrounded by multiple walls.

So can one buy the X2 (not "a") and and make 850 mhz 3G compatible with software? My carrier in Brazil uses this frequency.... Thanks.
where is the link, without it this thread is useless

no as I said the band limitations are in the cpu of the device

Not CPU, but the power amplifiers. In the X2i, only the 900/1900/2100MHz UMTS bands are amplified. In the X2a, only the 850/1900/2100MHz UMTS bands are amplified. It's still a hardware problem.

My HSPA+ has been throttled to Edge on this plan since it's 500MB max , But my LTE I believe is unlimited since no provision on it? Haven't been throttles on LTE, Hopefully I don't with this $40 greatness.

I used my verizon g2 on t mobile but only got HSPA+. Couldn't get 4G because the verizon G2 doesnt have the t mobile 4g bands. I thought MetroPCS used ATT towers.

HSPA+ is a form of 4G for T-Mobile. LTE I forgot how it works, but LG G2 are able to pick it up off T-Mobile. I'm currently on Metro PCS still using a stock rom and it picks up 4G LTE and switches to HSPA+ when out of LTE area and even goes to Edge when in a bad area. Its all in using the right APN Settings.
and Metro PCS is owned by T-Mobile, so its using T-Mobile Towers.
For Stock roms, U would have to input T-mobile LTE APN settings to access it.
Can you please tell me how to get data (either 3G or 4G) on the Lg g2 verizon? I already put in a T-mobile sim card, changed network to GSM mode and add an APN following the instructions on the Internet but all I get is voice calling only. The notification bar shows a 3G symbol but I'm not able to connect to the Internet at all. (

Change your network setting to global for LTE
Am I seeing this correctly? I ask not to be a smartbutt... I ask because if Im understanding you, I cant get this to work at all.
You said you have the Verizon LG G2 on MetroPCS using the T-mobile LTE APN settings... but you did not have to root or flash or smack or take a hammer to it? Its completely stock?
Yep been using mine for a couple of months completely stock, works great.
Yeah I think Verizon LG G2 are the only ones unlocked to different carriers. Because I also use my wifes t mobile sim with no problem at all.
i cant seem to get mms on stock roms tried using xdabbeb g3 rom and data works but no mms is it even possible ??

[Q] Does international S6 Edge G925F work on AT&T?

Yes, G925F will work great. Both devices support the same LTE bands, though the AT&T version also supports bands 29 & 30. This is not a huge deal as AT&T is not yet utilizing these. When they do, it will only be in heavily congested areas like big cities.
Somewhat related questions. 1. Where is a good place to buy the international version? 2. What options are there for insurance? I'm assuming that the AT&T insurance won't cover the international phone.
Does an international version also include an unlocked bootloader? I too am interested in what options there are for insurance. I am on AT&T as well.
What about the 925I what is the difference between the F and the I?
Guys,
I have the SM-G925F Gold 64GB and it doesn't work well with AT&T or T-Mobile. The reception is very bad compared to the AT&T model I have sitting next to it. The firmware must be tuned differently than what is needed for the US frequency bands. I can barely pick up LTE on either AT&T or T-Mobile when I have a great LTE signal on the AT&T variant SM-G925A sitting next to it. I would advise against purchasing the 925F.

Hi y2jdmbfan, could you use your dialer and enter *#0011# for both phones and let us know what band they are using? Also from this post, a user had to call AT&T to get the unlocked phone's IMEI registered on the AT&T network so it would be recognized as an LTE device. Thanks.

Thanks for redoing the pictures. You know you should call AT&T and just verify that your sm-g925f is a recognized LTE device on its network. They'll easily verify your IMEI. It wouldn't hurt to try before sending it back.
As per paperWastage post:
paperWastage said:
AT&T only gives you access to the LTE network if you have a LTE-capable device. AT&T detects this by checking the IMEI, or by someone manually flagging the account/IMEI
Since they don't sell the international version, they don't have your IMEI flagged as a LTE device. Therefore, you get only 3G/HSPA.
You need to "register" a AT&T phone on your device by calling in and telling them the IMEI (use your older ATT phone, or a display model at a store). Then, swap the SIM to your new phone
AT&T may still have your old AT&T phone tied to your account, and given you LTE access even though you switched to this new phone

I'm using the IMEI for the AT&T branded White Galaxy S6 Edge I have sitting here on both lines, so that is not the issue. Thanks though.
Just so I understand correctly. Each phone has its own dedicated IMEI that can not be changed. When you put your AT&T SIM in the SM-G925F you are connecting to their network with the dedicated IMEI of the SM-G925F. From paperWastage explanation, how does AT&T know the IMEI for the SM-G925F which is an international phone know its a recognizable LTE device for its network? From his explanation you have to call them so they can add the SM-G925F to the network as a LTE device. The reason I'm trying to clarify is BC I'll be receiving my SM-G925F sometime this week and if it really does not work like you're finding I may not even open it and send it back. It'll save me on the restocking fee if I do not open it. But like I said I'm trying to understand how this all works. Thanks again.

Basically each phone has it's own IMEI, but all that matters is what features / phone is provisioned to your SIM card. There is not way that you can call AT&T and get them to add the SM-G925F as a recognized LTE device, it won't happen. You can tie any IMEI number to your account / SIM card in order to get your line / SIM setup for a proper LTE plan. One method is to just go in the store and get the IMEI off another Galaxy S6 Edge that is AT&T branded and log into your AT&T account and change your device to that IMEI.
Got it! Thank you kindly for clarifying. So it looks like I'll have to go with an unlocked SM-G925A.

It doesn't need to be unlocked if you are using it with AT&T...the SM-G925A is an AT&T version.
G9250
I am on AT&T and I am thinking about getting a SM-G9250 which unlocked from Hong Kong. It radio frequencies support is superior to all other variants and it even has CMDA support. At same price, it seems better choice than I or F model ( I have G920I now and I am happy with connectivity). I will not be flashing roms and will stick to stock rom. But I'm worried about things like Samsung Pay. Do you guys think samsung will enable pay for specific models? Are there any other concerns about getting the 9250 instead of F or I?
Here are the bands supported by G9250:
LTE B1, B2, B3, B4(AWS), B5, B7, B8, B12, B17, B18, B19, B20, B25, B26, B28, B29
TD-LTE B38, B41, B40, B39
2G bands GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
CDMA 800
3G bands HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100
3G CDMA BC0(800)
3G TD-CDMA B34(2010), B39(1880)

Can you get Lollipop update not on Verizon network?

Since Verizon phones are auto-unlocked and the Droid Turbo has AT&T LTE bands, I was considering buying this phone but my only worry is - will the phone get the Lollipop update if I'm not on the verizon network?
Also, I heard MMS is a little wonky if you're not on the verizon network as well, is this true?
I guess you can find the official update file and flash it through the stock recovery
That's how I updated my Turbo before the update was available through the normal update menu.
Droid Turbo will get updates with any or no sim card. it is not dependent if you have any sim or verizon sim.

Droid Turbo XT1254 does not have all the AT&T LTE bands. Has 2, 4, 17 but not LTE band 5 (now used in some locations). Just like it also doesn't have all the T-mobile LTE bands. Doesn't have LTE band 12.
Moto Turbo and Moto Maxx (XT1225) has 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 17 -- ALL the AT&T LTE bands.
That may or may not matter to you, depending on if you need LTE band 5.

Would be great if there were a USER FRIENDLY LTE bands coverage map, not showing just LTE coverage but also showing which BANDS are being used. I cannot find that anywhere.
The FCC has a resource to show frequencies used by a carrier, but you have to convert that to bands yourself, and it's not user friendly:
https://forums.att.com/t5/Network-Coverage/LTE-bands-and-coverage/td-p/4259614
http://reboot.fcc.gov/reform/systems/spectrum-dashboard
this is about the only way. There are some apps like opensignal you can download to your phone and check the area. I know vermont is all band 5 for the most part. Here in IL I get band 4,5,17 only my 35 min commute to work.

Open Signal has an app that collects crowd sourced information -- including bands -- but then just displays it as "4G" coverage, again not breaking down which LTE bands are being used in a specific area.
I use LTE Discovery app. It shows me which band I'm on and what the signal strength is. But if my XT1225 didn't already have all the LTE bands for AT&T, how would I know what I am missing?
Yes, you can. I have friends overseas with turbos and they all received lollipop.

Noob question regarding phone compatibility on other networks

I have a droid turbo that I've been using for about a year using WiFi only. I make all my calls/txts via google hangouts.
I want to pick up a data-only sim for it, but am not sure what would be compatible with a Verizon phone. I don't need a voice plan at all (rather keep using hangouts dialer) and only need a small amount of data per month (sub 1GB).
What are my options? Thanks for the help.
EDIT: just realized this post should have been under q/a section. my bad

The Turbo is an international phone that is compatible with both CDMA and GSM networks, and it is not SIM locked, so just about anything you plug in should work from a hardware standpoint. If I were you, I would look up the bands that your carriers of choice use and compare them with the bands that the Turbo are capable of receiving, and pick the carrier where there is the most overlap.

You don't say where you live. U.S.? Europe? South America?
Here's the all the various bands of the Droid Turbo XT1254 (and the FCC ID clone XT1250):

The Droid Turbo XT1254 has LTE bands 2, 3, 4, 7, 13.
_________
U.S.
AT&T uses 2, 4, 5, 12/17 (17 is a subset of 12) and some more LTE bands are coming on line like LTE band 30 -- but still in most places it's 2, 4, 17. I can show you my LTE Discovery logs for my XT1225 -- which has 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 17. While I have run across LTE band 5 a few times on AT&T, it's mostly for supplemental LTE coverage in dense LTE zones. There's very few standalone LTE band 5 locations. But if I didn't have LTE band 17 on my phone I would be dropping down to HSPA a lot!.
Where I live (Atlanta metro area), 17 is use a LOT inside the city where I work -- while 2 and 17 are used around the perimeter and LTE band 4 is used up north of the city and towards the Tennessee state line.
If were on AT&T and you lived in an area where 2 and 4 are only used, you would be lucky. However, If you lived in an area where AT&T used 17 quite a bit (like inside Atlanta city limits), you would have to stay on HSPA a lot.
T-mobile uses 2, 4, 12.
Any MVNOs affiliated with those carriers (H20, Net10, etc.) would use those bands too, of course.
Stay away from Sprint and any of its MVNOs.

In South America, many of the major carriers use LTE bands 3 and 7, which is why the Droid Turbo XT1254 is popular as a used phone in that region. Although the "international" Quark 64GB XT1225 ballistic nylon + Kevlar was released for Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Puerto Rico -- a 32GB Droid Turbo XT1254 is a lower cost option for many with otherwise the same hardware specs.
XT1225 has more HSPA bands and LTE bands than the XT1254, and slightly different LTE bands -- but are otherwise the same phone. But the XT1254 came in two memory variants -- 32GB and 64GB, while the XT1225 was 64GB only. While there were 64GB Droid Turbos also with Ballistic Nylon + Kevlar, the ones flooding the secondary markets around the world seem to mostly be the 32GB models, which of course have no expandable memory. It's a trade-off. I won't buy a 32GB phone nowadays, even if it had microSD card (which the Quarks do not).
The XT1225 has held its value better than the XT1254 -- I think because of the 64GB memory and easily unlocked bootloader -- plus more HSPA bands instead of relatively useless CDMA bands most of the world does not use.

Europe.
Here's a list of the LTE networks in Europe:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LTE_networks_in_Europe
Take UK for instance... Vodafone uses 1, 3, 7, 20, 38. You'll get reception on 3 and 7, but not the others. If you are unlucky enough to live in an area where there is no 3 and 7, then you would almost never get any LTE. But you could still drop down to HSPA.
WOW! Awesome and most complete of answers ChazzMatt! Thank you!
