Concerning USB OTG storage - Xperia SP Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all, I just got this device free from my operator, SIM free, and I would like to share this particular aspect.
First of all make shure your X SP is fully charged and you are using a working USB OTG cable adapter (preferably tested on other devices).
1. USB pendrives, SD and microSD adapters. Xperia SP supports out of the box USB storage meaning pendrives and SD adapters like Sandisk Cruzer (some old 4GBmodel) and some Sandisk 32 GB microSD car in Sony Ericsson's IM 920 adapter. All of them formatted as FAT32.
Yes I've encountered fails but related exclusively to voltage (both pendrives and SD adapters). Dunno which will work for you, better try before you buy.
2. Yes it supports exFAT. FWs prior to ...2.254 do not. I've tested them all. I am specific to the aforementioned. exFAt meaning you can mount microSD cards 64+ gigs and virtually any filesizes, think of 8 GB .mkv files.
3. It hurts when it comes to HDDs. Before anything make sure your external HDD has also an external power supply. It means you have to see a wire leading to a wall socket which is being actually connected. Otherwise your phone or tablet will never be able to power by itself a HDD, be it 2.5 or 3.5 inch. Moving on, I found plugging in any externally powered HDD does nothing by itself.
In comes the trick. I own a Xperia LiveDock DK10 for the 2011 range. It's externally powered and also has an USB OTG input. It helped me before with each pendrive which didn't work by itself when plugged in the USB OTG cable alone. Powering the dock supplied the energy the setup was lacking.
Since the most of you will find the dock redundant or missing from stocks I am glad to inform you all that some USB hub that was lying around, branded Manhattan, with external power supply, did exactly that job.
Here are some examples:
Toshiba 500 GB HDD FAT32 file format, 2.5" form factor, IcyBox enclosure, separate power supply, plugged in the 1st port of a Manhattan USB Hub, power supply powered in, mini USB output plugged in USB OTG adapter in Sony Xperia SP, fully charged. Played 1080p mkvs smoothly.
1500 GB Seagate/Samsung, 2000 GB Hitachi NTFS formatted 3.5 HDDs in powered racks, externally powered Manhattan USB hub, USB OTG cable, Xperia SP rooted, installed Paragon exFAT, NTFS & HFS+ and Paragon USB plugin for Total Commander, full size drive fully accesible.
..............................
Also Sony Nex camera, 64GB exFAT SD card inside, connected only with USB OTG cable on Xperia SP - working.

Thanks, u have photos?

Can I connect my 1TB Western Digital Ext HDD (USB powered) to my Note (GT-N7000, Stock 4.0.4 with Hydracore 5.4 Std)
I tried formatting one partition to FAT32 as well, but no luck..is it bcz of lack of power to the HDD to run?
Of course you can connect. Only your external hard drive in addition to using the USB connection must have a second source of electricity. USB connector on the phone is too inefficient.

Ok..but how can I do that? My Ext HDD is USB powered..is there any way I can provide the HDD with power supply, using some kind of cables/adapters or something?
If your external drive has no additional power outlet, then connect it to your phone is not possible. Attempts to various modifications may damage the phone.
You need a Y split USB cable, something similar to this:

NOTE: that was just first USB cable I found using google, I'm not suggesting/related to that ebay seller in any way! Do your own research, you may be able to buy locally for cheaper.

Hmmm...so, it cannot be used as "portable" as a pendrive..as it needs external power (PC/Laptop OR some external battery)..so better option would be 64GB or higher pendrive (if needed desperately)

[Q] USB OTG help?

Basically I decided to use my 1TB exFAT formatted HDD with my Z3C. I have a OTG cable and if the power supplied isnt enough I can hook up my external battery via the magnetic charging port on the side. However, when I connect it, the HDD fails to spin up and I can't mount it. Will I need to root the phone in order to mount it with an app or is there some kind of problem with the set-up.

You should be using a powered USB OTG cable or putting a powered USB hub to use any higher draw device like a HDD from a phone.

MHL + OTG simultaneously

Hello,
I've bought 5 in 1 MHL adapter for Sony Xperia Z3 Compact.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/5in1-USB-OT...hash=item3abe751335:m:mYdZ0mYtBAtzUwzYCG21rtg
MHL is working great but OTG function with this adapter is not working. Is it wrong adapter or Z3 Compact doesn't support MHL + OTG simultaneously?
My firmware is 23.5.A.1.291.
I have a question for you, do try a wired mouse? More usb memory? 2gb, 4 gb, 8 gb, 16gb

Yes I have tried wired mouse, USB flash drive with less capacity and also SD and micro SD card, with no success. It is not working.
Did You try it with external power? MHL needs a lot of juice so when You are connecting both MHL and OTG, MHL takes all power from phone or too weak external adapter.

This adapter only works with external power. I've tried several external adapters.
Ok, so it can be incompatible with Z3c. I searched for one for myself some time ago and most of them (combo MHL+OTG) was for Samsung only cause it has some extra pins in USB port to separate OTG with MHL. Sony has standard 6 or 5 pins USB port instead of 12 pins like Samsung and thats why Samsung adapters wont works with Sony phones. I think only reasonable option is Chromecast/Miracast + standard OTG adapter.

Ok thank you for explanation. I found out that OTG works only without external power and MHL works only with external power. If somebody will found an adapter where MHL + OTG works simultaneously, just let me know. I have bad experience with Chromecast - delay in games is considerable.
Hi mr1uke, sorry for the late question, but could you tell me whether the limitation you said about the OTG (works only without external power) is in the Xperia Z3 or in the 5 in 1 MHL adapter ? Thank you.

Do you get a crash/reboot when plugging-in an OTG cable/adaptor

I bought an OTG adapter from china, it`s an microusb to an full size usb 2.0 port you plug your usb stick into it.
I have had an number to sudden reboots when i plug my Sandisk 16gb extreme usb 3.0 and an Sandisk 16gb usb stick
Both are formatted to Fat32 and have video`s on them.
Anybody else have this happen.
John.

It's an NTFS partitioned drive. I'm having a little trouble accessing it. I have a 1TB 3.5" drive as well, but so far I haven't had luck with it either.
It would be better if you had the SATA-USB adapter with external power source (the current is to low from single USB port, OnePlus 3 has USB2 and not 3).
You may need to flash a custom kernel with NTFS support built in.
