Getting a Z1 LTE white (C6906) / returning Z Ultra! - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK - the Z Ultra is a GREAT phone [tablet-thing] but its a little too large for my daily use.
See my post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2750555
Got it on Amazon yesterday and promptly returning it for a Z1 LTE in white ( Newegg.com is the best price I've found ) The Ultra's build quality is top-notch and what has prompted me to get the Z1 LTE; really I want the Z2 but not for my wallet at the moment.
Right now I'm using my LG Optimus G Pro and love the 5.5 size and beautiful display. I feel the Z1 is no downgrade as it also has a great screen + solid glass/aluminum construction over the plastic LG.
First order of business will be:
Remove front screen protector (did this on my Xperia ion last year)
Remove rear glass protector (haven't seen anyone do this)
Rooting and unlocking the bootloader
Look for the "perfect" case that allows me to enjoy the phone's build beauty
Selling my LG
Thoughts or comments greatly welcomed

[Q] Samsung vs Xperia Z

Hi
I'm currently using Samsung S3. So far I am happy with Samsung S3 for its fast processor, GPS starts fast etc.. Just that it's giving me eye strain perhaps due to prolonged use in the past, now I can hardly surf long in it. I'm thinking of Note 2 for its bigger screen (but I am fearful it will not resolve the eye strain).
Was wondering if Xperia Z would give me less eye strain.. Of course, I don't mind a nicer more solid external look Xperia Z has to offer but seems a big sacrifice of letting go of the following Samsung galaxy's benefits:
1. I am using Wanam lite rom which is excellent with its toggle buttons (allowing wifi, GPS, torchlight etc to be switched on/off easily) and making S3 sleeker. Was wondering if there is any great rom developed for Xperia Z to reduce battery consumption, increases performance and functionality.
2. Read GPS is slacking on Xperia Z. Is this true? I need my GPS to start fast when driving.
S3 GPS starts fast..
3. S3 screen seem scratch resistant relative to Xperia Z..
4. Long battery hour
5. S3 does not heat up like Xperia Z
That said, I am looking for a more solid built smartphone. I have a sony mp3 which I accidentally placed in washing machine along with soiled bedsheets - it survived fine. I was truly impressed...
Anyone who can provide me some feedback on my queries would be deeply appreciated. Thanks!
XZ might resolve your eyestrain problem, it uses different display, with full RBG matrix and it's 440+ ppi with 1080p resolution.
As for the rest of your questions:
1. There are custom roms for XZ already, take a look in Development section.
2. Haven't noticed and problems with GPS, it starts reasonably fast, certainly as fast as my old Note 2 - and Note 2 used the same chip/software as S3 so I'd say no problem here.
3. XZ screen is as scratch resistant as S3, or even more thanks to Dragontail glass. The "problem" is Sony put an anti-shatter film over the glass, and it's the film that get's scracthed, not the screen/glass. Some decide to remove the film, some choose to put a screen protector over it - both ways works fine for me.
4. Battery life is decent - it's not great, but it's not worse than S3's in that matter.
5. They actually heat up almost the same.
If you're after good design and build quality - XZ is a phone for you as long as you can overlook it's minor flaws ( yes, it does have flaws, like every single phone ). Also, Sony's stock firmware is brilliant, it's the first Android phone I haven't rooted and installed CM on it - because frankly, there's no need to do that at the moment.

Thanks! :good:
I've gone from a S3 to a Sony Z. There are some small things that I am getting used to but mostly enjoying the change.
Battery has been unbelievable in standby mode. Last night it dropped 1% in 7 hours after disabling most of the bloatware. I haven't started stamina mode even!
Took some time to go from S3s strong contrast screen but now much enjoy the XZs softer more realistic display.
I bought a Zagg back and front protector actually for grip. I don't wanna put a shell on it but with the glass face and back being quite slippery I thought it as a good compromise plus more protection.

Hi all
Thanks for the helpful feedback. Today, I went to try out both Samsung Note II and Sony XperiaZ and Nexus4. Quite like Sony xperia, however it seems when viewing the same fast and furious trailer on all the phones, Sony Xperia Z fared particularly badly. Nexus 4 and Note II give sharp images but not Sony Xperia Z. I wonder why. It's HD youtube, this one which was tested on all three smartphones. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7zl_t48CMc Sony Xperia Z supposed to give good display, why is it so bad in this instance?

I want to buy the Xperia SP but I heard it has Annoying Back Cover FLEX

I had a Moto Atrix 2 some years ago and god it was horrid. The back cover would star to flex after you take it out and put it back in about twice.
My max budget is $350 USD
I am eyeing down the LG 4X HD for $315 on Amazon
I am scared to buy some of these phones that has impossible to remove battery. I plan to keep a phone for a long time possibly 5 years because I won't be doing anything demanding on it. Just need it for Netflix and web browsing etc maybe some casual games and watts app
I was really liking the Xperia SP but heard the camera sucks and the screen is really bad.
And then heard it has this stupid back cover flex and I suffer from OCD so its gonna annoy the hell out of me if it flexes.
Its a shame I really liked the look of the Xperia SP
I have the SP and love it.
There is no flex in the back cover of the phone. I also like the screen but the viewing angles are not so good and black is dark grey (i don't care about these "problems") . The camera is not great but it's not bad, just fine.
My back cover doesn't flex at all, the phonearena(?) review that said it flexed had a slightly defective back cover or it wasn't placed correctly or it was just that the pre-release device had that flex and it no longer does
The screen is fine when looking dead-on but it does indeed have bad viewing angles but that doesn't bother me, wouldn't call it "really bad"
The camera has good 1080p video, the pictures lack fine detail indeed but that is most likely getting patched as it did on the Xperia Z (and ZR?)
definitely no flex issues on the back cover on several units I've checked.
However, there's a very little imperfect on the back cover where there will be a tiny bulge of the cover
where it should line nicely to the body. Especially at the top part.
Finishing could be finer.
Hi there yes its sites like Phone Arena and Cnet who claims the back cover flexes and becomes annoying.I am glad to know this won't be a problem.
Will this work on my country?
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Xperia-U...TF8&qid=1375765979&sr=1-11&keywords=xperia+sp
C5302 Xperia SP
Where I live in Trinidad and Tobago we use 3G HSPA+ 1900 band I understand all AT&T phones will work on my country meaning they use the same 3G band.
I am buying this Xperia SP because I can get it to buy from Amazon.com
I think the HTC One X would be the best buy since it costs same price but its impossible to find a new one since all of them on the market now will be refurbished. Most of those Amazon merchants are scammers also.
BTW how powerful is the WIFI antenna in the SP? can it compare to a laptop?
I heard TFT is old tech and no one uses it anymore and that SONY should have gone AMOLED or IPS
Can anyone confirm how bad TFT technology is?
I think the SP is abetter buy because the back cover is easy to remove so I need not worry about battery cause it seems like removing the battery would not be a huge problem after 3 years it should be easy if you remove the screws that holds it.
then again I heard batteries in these sony devices last up to 5 years and by then the phone would be no good.
Finally should I buy red or black?

Keep or Cancel my pre-order

As the title says!
Ordered a Z1 a wee while ago, and now, after having read some reviews am considering cancelling it - Are the reviews a load of cobblers, what do folks think.
Negatives (from reviews)
- Poor battery life
- Camera that fails to live up to expectations, over zealous post processing leading to poor, over compressed images
- Scratches very easily - does it even have Corning Gorilla Glass front/back?
- Nasty Sony UI overlay (not to bothered about this, I'll choose my own shell)
- Massive bezel compared to competition
- Bezel raised at edges meaning front surface not flat, difficult to clean + a dust magnet
- Rear glass is a finderprint magnet
- Screen issues - not good in bright sunshine (worse than AMOLED), viewing angles not great (image washed out at an angle)
Positives (from reviews):
- Good build quality
- Waterproof
- dedicated camera button
- performs well in low light
- Bundled with geeky smartwatch
- powerful processor
- Takes a micro SD
- Speaker seems half decent
If I do cancel then a Galaxy S4 is the other option. Ruled out LG G2 due to no micro SD card slot, ruled out HTC One for no SD card slot, and low megapixel camera (I like to have an image that's big enough for cropping).

I change my s4 for z1, i think only screen and weight os better in s4, but touchwiz in very bad and cyanogem for my octa never be good much bugs.

I have seen sample which were beautiful. About the fingerprint magnet and bezel. You should have known about this design before preordering. Not a negative at all. It called design preference. And there's no issue with the screen. It's definitely make brighter than AMOLED.
You must be reading too much CNET. I suggest you read the preview from GSMArena. Much more fair and balanced.
Z1 very good

Actually, the above was a summary of what I had read from MANY review sites - and yes, CNET was one of them, and the most negative, but if it aint apple they don't like it anyway!!
I like the look of the design, fingerprint magnet can be fixed by adding a case, but the device is already pretty bulky.
I'm just not sure why they went for glass front/back when other manufacturers have moved away from it. The back on the zperia Z tablet looks just as classy as glass IMHO, and the HTC one is way more classy, esp in black, and that has an alu back.
HTC One best fits my design language, but does not fit my need for a decent megapix camera and an SD card slot. At the moment, Z1 comes the closest to delivering all my wants, and Samsung S4 second, but I don't like £450 plasticated phones! Like all devices, one weighs up the pro's and con's and buys the one that ticks the most boxes.
I'm told that mine wont be delivered until 1st Oct (due to the accompanying watch being delayed). I will have a chance to play with one in a shop before then.
Nigel
cancel the preorder, go play with the device once it hits the store and then decide. Reviews are just for reference, and every one preference differs. I did not pre order as i want to see the device once and play with it for sometime, and see. I want to do the same with G2 and then will decided between one of the two. S4 has an old proc i would rather suggest Note 3 to you.

Battery life is ok
camera is good... use manual settings for better shots
Sony ui is simplistic.. and you can get replacement home screen from playstore
The retail unit has god display so do not worry there.
other issue can be minimised by using a good front and rear screen protector..

Really not a fan of screen protectors - always end up with at least one lump of dust under the screen - make it look naff! Current phone is a Galaxy Note 1 (almost 2 years old). Never had a screen protector, in daily use on my commute, and screen is perfect. I expect the Xperia Z1's screen to be no less durable than this. If I am going to have to cover this up to protect it from scratches then gone is its beauty - and I might as well have bought an S4 and stuck that in a TPU case!
Nova is my favoured UI. I use it on my Galaxy Note 8. Owning the Note8 is why I am not in the market for a note 3. The 8" screen on the note 8 makes the stylus far more useful than it is on my Note 1.

Seems like you don't underdstand the fact that Sony installs a shutter protector with Sony logo imprinted on their screens. It is not the screen that scratches but the protector.
Additionally Sony will not replace the shutter protector as they treat is as partbof the screen. It is much easier to apply an extra protector for 2 eur on top and change it when you need. You can remove the shutter protector (you will loose sony logo on the front) and have just glass which will be much more scratch resistant.
The back has also got an antiglare layer on glass so it is the one that shows scratches.
Being an Xperia Z owner I would highly advise using a screen protector but it is up to you. I have found that the protector does not impair phone functionality in any way and if you have difficulty with application just buy a few until you get it right or get one applied in a phone shop.

I preordered mine and laid down 20% non-refundable deposit, so I can't cancel my order. But if I were you, I'd get Note3 or wait out for Z2. I wouldn't get S4, it's too "old".
I will try to answer this one by one:

None of the reviewers has a production set yet so there is no basis to this at all. reviewers need at least 1-2 weeks of using the handset daily before they can really tell the difference.

Screen protectors fix this, and if possible dont install it yourself, get one from a store and let them install. it will cost a few dollars more but it is worth it. I have been using screen protectors on my xperia S for more than 1 year and I barely notice that it is there.

I disagree, sony UI is the fastest, most elegant and simplistic non-nexus phone out there. if you have tried an LG or Samsung phone you will know what I am saying. if there is a criticism, it is that the UI has too few enhancements.

This one is something you have to try yourself. most of the time, when you have placed the phone in your hand, it changes your opinion right away. most of the reviews I have read, watched are saying that Z1 is one of the most premium feeling and comfortable for a flagship android phone there is.
compare this with LG G2's plastic back, with back buttons (barf), and Note3's "Leather back (really is plastic)" back panel.

This is not true at all, Xperia Z1 Screen is the brightest of all. trust me it is bright! and nothing is worse than AMOLED.
Also IMO, who uses their phones at weird viewing angles? but if being used dead on, Xperia Z1 is the best. specially at watching movies.

Another thing, Samsung's Amoled display deteriorate in time. it will deteriorate by almost 10% within 1 year.
I compared my friend's 1 year old Note 2 to 1.5 year old my Xperia S, clearly shows the difference.

TS, you should Read this post by shem2409. ALL sony xperia handsets came with the shatterproof sheet. It is safer for human when the shatter proof sheet is applied. When glass breaks or shatters, there will be lots and lots of small tiny shards coming off. The shatter proof sheet is to hold the shards together so that you won't hurt yourself.
Just apply a good quality screen protector and you will be fine. Or you can go to a shop, buy screen protector from them and they would apply for you. They have experience on apply screen protector and most of the time, they applied it perfectly for me.
The screen is ok on the Z1. Screen protector will protect it further. Viewing angles are fine on the Z1.
The only valid point is camera quality. At present the S4 which has had 6 months to be optimised takes better quality shots. But it doesnt have the 800 chip that can do more camera tricks like the Z1. Also the S4 has 9gb free internal. The Z1 11.7gb approx.

I currently have the S4 and I am in love with it. The only flaw to me is I wish the speaker was on the bottom so it wouldn't matter how I put the phone down and also the camera. The camera is good but not for low-light photography. I am upgrading to the Z1. Also, I would prefer people to save their comments on the Z1's camera until they actually see it in person. In an honest sense, I hardly see anything wrong with the Z1 besides the large bezel at the bottom (most likely due to the hardware design) and the lack of OIS.
Keep that in mind, my octa have only 8.79 gb for use and I stop more than 50 apps with titanium backup. Is really good device but touchwiz is bad, i give a try with Sony now.

These phones are fingerprint magnets but as other OP's have stated, a back shield isn't noticeable at all. I always cover my phones with skins from Phantomskinz including my XZ. I found a glass oleophobic screen protector from Brando for my XZ and loved it. Am (im)patiently waiting for them to get one for the XZ1! Feels much better to the touch than the regular screen protectors.

I totally disagree! The Z1 samples I've seen so far reflect its overall image quality to be much better in comparison to S4 or any other android smartphone so far. Have a look at the gsmarena Z1 camera samples (20 mp ones) & compare them to S4's, you'll know what I mean. I do agree that the image processing on Z1 could be better (which hopefully should only improve with retail firmware & further updates). But the Z1 sensor captures way too much detail compared to S4 to be called of inferior quality ! Low light imaging too seems a lot better.
On a side note, I noticed that the gsmarena Z1 review camera samples show blurring out of images ONLY on the right side (about 1/3 part), which might probably be due to dirty lens or defective unit.
Hi
Well, I did cancel my order. I shall wait for some real user reviews of retail units before deciding whether to get one. I note that several UK vendors have had it listed as 'in stock' from today so those real user opinions are not far off.
Might just keep my Note One for anither 6 months and wait for the Z2!

[Q] LG G2 to Z1... Is it worth it?

First of all I know that most of you will prefer the Z1,,, since this is a Z1 forum. But I just would like some opinions n whether it's a good decision replacing the G2 with a Z1. I did search most of it, but still unclear due to a very mixed reaction.
The number one reason I am thinking about this is because I know devs will port the Z2 launcher and other goodies to the Z1 soon, and I love the
look of the Z2 interface. ( I would not be able to afford to buy one though)
I prefer the build quality of the Z1, but will probably miss the back keys of G2.
Is the camera all that great? Or even better does someone know if it's better than the G2? I heard very mixed reaction.
My wife got her G2 last month when I got my Z1s, they're completely different phones. The G2 has more customizations options for sure.
As far as camera performance I prefer the Z1. Sometimes her camera produces better pics but more often than not mine wins out. Also, the Z1 takes the pictures faster, seems to take forever from the time we hit the button until it takes the pic on the G2. The Z1 takes them super fast and has way more options. I love this camera.

Is the camera all that great? Or even better does someone know if it's better than the G2? I heard very mixed reaction.

The G2 is a great phone so I would stick with it. It's got a bigger and better screen than the Z1, too. I only went for the Z1 over the G2 because I need lots of storage (no SDcard on the LG) and I prefer a premium finish to glossy plastic. if those things are important to you, go for the switch.

I love my z1 but was looking at the htc one and g2 when I was choosing to buy my phone. Any of those are good solid phones..but I wouldn't replace one over the other if I had any of them. I'd just wait for the next generation..

I decided to make the jump and I have got to say the build quality is superior. As for Camera. It's what I expected, awful in low light, amazing in good light. speed is about the same and prefer Sony's skin.
I actually prefer the G2, I quite like the bigger screen, and the smaller bezels are really nice. It also seems to be a better point and shoot when I compare my dad's G2 and my Z1, and images turn out a lot less grainy. The only things I prefer on the Z1 is the premium feel and the microSD card slot, as well as glass screen protector, as the G2 is really lacking in good glass screen protectors. I also prefer the Xperia UI over LG's Touchwiz copy UI, however, I'd just flash an AOSP based ROM over it anyways, like I would if my Z1 had an unlocked bootloader.

I think pictures in good light look much better on the Z1, but low light G2 easily wins. And the Z1 takes pictures faster.
I am pretty confused how G2 Devs have managed to increase image quality with a MOD yet their are no mods for the Z1 that do.

[Q] Sony Xperia Z1 Build Quality / Waterproof-ness Question

Hi there guys,
I have a question. I have owned many Xperia Z series phones, ranging from Xperia Z, Z1, Z2 Z3, Z3 Plus and even Z Ultra. Now I have had a problem with the glass disjoining on all these models. I have had multiple versions of the same ones yet after a few months use they all have the same issue, the back glass will start coming off.
I treat my phones really well, always in a case with screen protection on both front and back and also never dropped etc. However, the only phone that never did this to me was my Z1. I am saying was because now I have noticed the glass on the front is slightly coming up on one corner. Its not so big but it is noticeable from a very close distance (refer to photos).
I wonder if the phone is no longer waterproof and is there anyway of fixing this problem (or do I have to send it to Sony). And can I continue using my phone without it getting worse. I'm currently using it just with screen protection on both sides.
