[Q] I did a very stupid thing - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running an n900a with rooted MJ5. I was using titanium to debloat it, and I accidentally deleted mail.4.2. I've searched the forums and can't find it anywhere. I'm not even sure if it's an APK or not, but anyway, in doing so, I've completely deleted the option for normal email. Icon is gone and everything.
The only thing I can tell you about it is that it was named Mail 4.2. Apparently it acts as the mail client for anything that isn't gmail related. Is there anyone here that might be able to pull that file from their own ROM, so I can reinsert it into my own and get my mail back. If so, I'd greatly appreciate it, and I'd like to apologize for bringing such a stupid problem here.

Don't know if this will help but worth a shot

i cant download anything in the android market anymore and i dont know why

i recently noticed when i try to download any app from the android market or update an app it will act like its starting the download but then never actually start it. im running the latest cyanogen rom. i have tried wiping and reflashing the latest cyanogen rom and reflashing the google apps addon. i have tried restoring to a previous backup when the apps were working in the market. i have tried flashing a non cyanogen rom even. nothing i can think of (my thoughts are limited since im fairly new at all this) and still no success. i had the same problem on my g1 with cyanogen and i somehow managed to get that working again by trying similar things but no luck yet with my nexus one and its really upsetting me. any ideas on how i can go about fixing this? thanks for all your help

May sound stupid (and yes, it is) but try launching google talk. Often bby logging in to talk, market downnloads kick off. Seems to be google account related.

hi, am facing the same issue..... I've tried opening talk like the previous poster suggested but it doesn't work..... appreciate any help on this.... I'm running the latest cm, with grnstatus bar morph..

try going into settings, applications, market, and uninstall updates, then open the market again
Sent from my Nexus One using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
OK I tried the uninstall updates idea and no luck there. Opening Google talk also didn't solve the problem. Any other ideas guys? Thanks
I wonder if you ever found a solution to this?
Well for me, I have to open GTalk and close it and reopen and close and reopen...it eventually works when it fully loads... Oddly, it seems to only happen on wifi. I'm pretty sure it's a GTalk issue.
Hopefully the new market system will make a difference...I really hope
How's the amount of space on your phone? Do you see the little hard drive icon? I know that the Market always starts to download stuff but never actually downloads anything when my phone space its low.
Hope this helps!

Messed up gallery between all roms

I've been messing with my Captivate a lot for the past few weeks, rooted and flashed once I got sick of waiting for an update. I've tried most of the major roms out there and am having a great time learning about it all.
I have a problem and would appreciate some advice on the simplest way to solve it. Whenever I try to enter the image gallery, I get a black screen for a few seconds, then it vibrates a few times and kicks back to the home screen and gives me a failure notification. It does this regardless of what rom I'm running so I'm assuming it has something to do with the file structure on the card? If I data reset, will this fix it?
I looked around but didn't see an apparent answer for this specific issue. Thanks
Try this, download sgs tools from market. Goto uodate stock apps select gallery

Hmmm, I downloaded it and it doesn't seem to do that much. I don't see any options like that for sure. What is that program supposed to do?
After I posted I realized the app I referenced is not on the market.
Have you tried deleting app data
settings, applications, manage, all, gallery, delete data

wow, thanks! That did it. I just upgraded the stock app and it's fine now. This app looks really useful, what are some of its other uses?
Secret codes gets you into a bunch of useful things
like lbs test mode for gps
the updated gallery you installed is also supposed to help battery somehow.
I do not use it all too much though, but I keep it around

Messed up my phone need help!

Before I even begin, I was a nub didn't know much about rooting and did it anyways. I suppose I have learned it the hard way and now I must pay.
I rooted my phone and everything went fine.
Before knowing much about Titanium Backup Pro I instead of "freezing" application I have accidentally deleted some apps that I shouldn't have.
When I say my phone is messed up I don't mean not "operational"
I can still use it for day to day but for instant.
I deleted backup manager and now I can't even restore my backups from verizon online.
I also when I try to call somebody from my contacts list I get this error
The application Contacts Storage (process com.motorola.contacts) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
I have random errors like that all the time.
I have unrooted and did a factory reset but to no avail.
Is there anything out there that could help get my phone back to the way it was when I received it?
I know its my fault for not learning but there must be something out there
Any help is appreciated.
When you first rooted, a backup is usually created. Go to your recovery and look for backup and restore and restore it.

Thanks for that quick response, could you be more specific about "Go to your recovery and look for backup" Where do I exactly go. Went around settings but couldn't find backup
There is no backup unless you made a backup.
And there's no recovery mode on the Droid 3 yet either.

I requested before, but i think the thread got moved or removed to be redone in devl section... Can someone post a backup from Titanium BackUp of the stock apps that will be needed for those who have gone Delete-happy and removed some wrong stuff?
Just found this:

Thank you for the responses guys.
I have played with it but I can honestly say I have not been able to get it to work.
I have tried following the instructions, even bought Root Explorer but can still not figure it out.
I attached a picture of the error. I just can't seem to do anything to get it fixed. Also I was attempting to re-install backup manager without success.....
Anybody that can help out? Is there maybe an easier way to get back to defaults maybe somebody have an image or something of a stock operating system that could be copied? sorry I have no idea of this stuff yet still learning

Ok here is what I do. Let me know if I am doing ANYTHING wrong at all.
I load up root explorer and transfer my backupmanager.apk and .odex from ex-sdcard to /system/app
then I change the permission to r/w
press and hold the file and go to permission. There I set Owner to Read/Write and Group, Others just have read privilages.
Hold the file again. Then I scroll to the bottom to change owner and group to 0 - root...
Reboot...
The program doesn't appear in my apps? Anything I did wrong?
First off, you are doing it correctly. However, I'm not sure if backup assistant is even an app you can launch from the drawer. You have to launch the "My Accounts" app. Second, you can check if it worked by going into titanium backup, and looking for the app. If the name of the app is in red, then you did it correctly.
Hey thanks for that reply! I have looked into it and like you said, it was there in red but now I can't find the my accounts app all I can find is the my verizon wireless app and our doesn't have any backup functions from what I can tell.
Let me ask you this since you seen to be pretty knowledgeable. I have all the apps on my computer from that file above! Would I be able to just copy paste them with root explorer to /system/apps and then do a system factory restore would that work? Or do I have to manually find the apps I stupidly deleted and do it one by I've like I have been?

If you can't find the app, just go into Settings>Accounts.
As for your question: Unfortunately, it's not that easy (I would know, that's one of the first things I tried when I was fixing that contacts bug ). You would have to set the permissions and owners for every apk and odex file from the system dump. However, that contacts bug should've been fixed if you reinstalled those yahoo apps the same way you reinstalled the backup assistant.
Btw, you do know that backup assistant is pretty pointless since all of your contacts are synced with your Google account, right? People have reported no problems when removing the backup assistant app.
And thanks! I'm no android guru like many others here; just trying to help others with a similar problem that had me stumped for a good hour.
Thanks again. I've located the app but it still gives me troubles and not bein able to sync with the online server please call *811 or something like that. The only reason why I care its because I actually did backup all my contacts to the backup client but couldn't get them back on the phone now! I figured it out last night with syncing to gmail and it worked but still trying to get it back to normal. I will just have to do the rest manually haha! Appreciate it a lot!

I got that error message even without root with all of the system apps in place. Backup Assistant is just a poorly-coded app.
I'm pretty sure you didn't do much damage to your phone. I mean, as long as you didn't remove any other authenticators or other apps that blur needs in order for it to function, you should be fine just reinstalling the yahoo apps I told you about. After all, that looks like it's the only error you're getting.
And no problem.
Alright so now I need urgent help!
I went through the entire applications that I was missing and I gave them all permission etc. Rebooted my device and now I am stuck in this screen.
It's an endless loop because I get the error message and can't exit out of it.
Anything that can be done at all?
Haha, oh wow. I knew I wasn't the only one with that problem. Accounts loved to crash on me whenever I reset my phone. You can fix this one of two ways: hold the search button on your phone until it launches voice search. Say anything; as long as it launches the browser, you'll be fine. Once the search is performed, search for an apk for another home launcher. The accounts app basically hijacked your home button, so you'll need another launcher in order to get your home button back.
The second way involves using the desk dock. If you have one, then go into productivity mode. There should be an app drawer there. Open up the market, and install the launcher of your choice.
Once again, I had this problem even before root, so I'm not sure what the cause for this was.

I don't know what I would do without you lol... I was searching google like wild for droid 3 recovery but there is literally NOTHING out there.
Also let me ask you this. If I do a factory reset. Do I have to re-do the whole application proccess to give them permissions or should they be right now
Once it's a system app, it will always be a system app, even after resetting the phone. You should be fine.

So I tried doing the factory reset. Everything went smooth and I was hoping that my phone would be back to the old phone.
I am at the Welcome to DROID 3 screen. Tap on the little green guy, get to the motorola screen from before and same damn error. Except this time, I can't even try to use the voice or search buttons, none of them work.....
What now? I feel so stupid right now

Unrooting ICS rom - bad idea?

Hello all,
I am currently running Slim ICS on my captivate and have a question. My new job allows me to install McAfee Mobile to connect to my corporate email server. Only issue is it won't install on a 'rogue' (I.e. rooted) (their words, not mine) device.
My question is, would it adversely effect me to unroot my device? I realize things like root explorer and titanium backup won't work, but are there any deeper implications other than loosing access to those apps?
Lastly, from what I've looked at the one click unrooting apps won't work if busy box is installed, or something lime that. Slim ICS comes with busy box, is that an issue? If so are there other procedures I can follow?
Or perhaps I need to return to stock. I'm wondering if corporate email is worth it...
I know CM9 allows you to disable it through settings. I can't think of any implications whatsoever. I feel like there's a way to trick the app into thinking you're not rooted. Pretty sure it's been done before
Sent from my SGH-I897
I think you will need unrooted stock. Which sucks. Do you travel and need to see your email while off WiFi? Is your laptop too heavy? I use only Calendar syncing - for reminders and dialing up to calls. Emails and Gmails are too painful to view and read.
The primary reason for me wanting to do this is so I can sync my calendar... As events come up at work I would love to just throw them into Outlook and have them show up on my phone, or vice-versa.
I tried to install Google Sync on my work computer but alas it was denied as I was not an administrator. Perhaps I just have to suck it up and try to put things in both my Outlook and Google calendars.... Unless someone has any other suggestions?
If you cannot sync with Google - you are screwed. Still check any portable apps which don't need install.
Stock ROM is not bad. As long as you have "Unknown source" checked and can have any apps...

Have you tried that app, I think it's ota root keeper or something like that. It can disable root temp, and bring it back when you're done

I'll take a look, however my guess would be this app constantly monitors whether or not a device is rooted. I may just go back to stock or give up completely, lol.
Most of these kind of apps just look for the su app. Remove that and they often work, which I think is basically what ota root keeper does

Data Recovery

I have a ATT S5 that a close friend's mom gave me and asked if there was any way that I could get the photos off it. The friend has passed away and after numerous attempts to recovery the google account and trying to figure out the password, they still can't get into the phone. The phone currently is a stock ATT s5 with fingerprint enabled. I am just looking to see if there are any options. It looks like custom recovery flashes with odin aren't an option with ATT version so I am not sure where to turn. Any help would be greatly appreciated in pointing me in a direction.
Not entirely sure about flashing, but if it is stock rom then googles ring/lock/locate may work on it.
Just have to know the email and password for the Gmail account tied to the device.
Then got to Google.com/android/devicemanager
Hit lock, change the password, and you are good
Also from google.com/accounts/contact/deceased?hl=en
Just incase

Yeah that's the core of the problem. The family doesn't have access to the google account yet since it takes a good amount of paper work to take over a passed away's persons account. If I had those credentials, I wouldn't have to try to crack into this device. Thanks for the information however.
Did you take the phone into the store to see if they have a way to get in?

Yeah the store won't help.
So I have been doing some more reading and have a thought. The recovery mode says this phone is KOT49H.G900AUCU2AND3. Is it possible to odin flash back down the stock firmware 4.4 using the single AP file so that it wouldn't wipe data. Would android boot up as a new install (with no security) but would still have emulated SD card in tacked?
