Questions for Note 3 Owners - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When you guys were on the Note 2 before updating to the Note 3 (or any Galaxy device), how long did it take for the update(s) to come out where you would get the UI from the Galaxy S device? For example, the phone, web browser, texting UI, etc updated for the Note 2 and it looks similar to the S4. Like I understand it's hard to explain, but I was wondering when will our Note 3's look like the S5's TW ui?

The answer is maybe never. Think about it you buy a device with one look learn it then they force a whole new look on you. This would outrage probably most novice users.

There's a way to get the s5 look on the note 3. I currently use it now.

Can I get this without rooting or voiding my warranty? I hate Knox, but I don't want to trip it and I rather keep my warranty intact. I rooted my old Note on Verizon, but then unrooted it later and it's warranty is unvoided, but I rather not root alltogether and keep it clean.

Sorry, not familiar with the program. Is that a program where you have to rewrite some core files with the Note 3's hidden file system?

GN3 isn't connecting to Gear after gear manager update

Okay, so I'm running X-note (on the latest RED Saber Kernel) on my (Canadian Variant) SM-N900W8 and my Gear worked just fine, until about 10 mins ago when the Samsung App store told me there was an update, I updated and now it's saying my phone is not compatible with the Gear... which is impossible....
Attached is a screen shot of the message I get when I open up Gear Manager to connect my watch.
Does anyone else have this problem???

I got this same message after I completed the update. I reset the gear and still got this same message. Finally I uninstalled Gear Manager and redownloaded a full install of the updated Gear manager. This worked.
I think the new gear manager is comoatible with devices on 4.3 not too sure... I have a GS4 and could access the app but with the new update it shows the same pop up msg... Revert back to the previous version...

There is another thread, where is same message mentioned, look for "cannot connect rooted devices" or so. Anyway, can I ask you about battery life on Note III with Gear connected? I using X-Note too with stock kernel and its very poor. And I have prevous version of Gear Manager.

What version of gear manager are you referring to? I'm running 1.4 on 4.3 (PACman which is AOSP, CM, Paranoid Android). I have a few issues both nothing major. Pairing was tricky but it worked once I figured out the dependencies and tricks.

Correct. Also no Weather or SVoice. I'm guessing that they are relying on resources from their own framework.
As much as I like this thing, I think I'm going to have to return it out of principle. They're trying to drive sales of specific devices with this approach and that's an Apple thing to do; not in the spirit of Android and I don't want the device enough to allow that kind of behavior. Anyway, this will likely just prompt a competing company to release an even better piece of hardware that won't pull such a stunt with the software and I'd rather put my resources there.
Same for me using x-note firmware

RAM usage

Yes with 4.4.2 we get more RAM, but the phone is not using it. In 4.3 I could easily keep 9-11 (2.2gb RAM/2.38gb) apps running in the background. 4.4.2 it now stays around 5-7app using (2.0gb RAM/2.71gb). Anyone else notice this?

Tell me again how a software update will give you more ram? You don't get more ram. Sorry. What you got was ART which doesn't even matter with the Note 3 because our hardware is TWICE as powerful as most stuff out there. Its sad... Kit kat has never been what it was meant to be. Think of it like Morpheus with the blue pill and the red pill.

As far as I know the Note 3 did not get ART. As many of you may know, when you wipe the dalvik cache and reboot the phone
"optimizes" all installed apps. When I had KitKat ROMs with ART enabled on my Galaxy Nexus it would take forever to "optimize" everything. My Note 3 running KitKat optimizes all 200+ apps in less than 2 minutes, much like my Nexus did when I was using dalvik. Based on these observations I believe that we're still stuck with dalvik.
I am using a custom KitKat ROM on my Note 3, so maybe the official OTA has ART and the ROM I'm using doesn't? I don't see an option for it in the development settings and I doubt the developer would remove it.

Well first of all, the note 3 is 5 times as powerful as the gnex. Secondly, if that's the case and we don't get ART because our hardware is so badass, then tell me what was the point of the upgrade?

According to this article (link below) Samsung removed ART from its 4.4.2 update. The author didn't specify which version of the Note they tested, so it may or may not apply to the AT&T or other US variants of the Note 3.

Upgrade from what? My Nexus or 4.3 on my Note? I upgraded from my Nexus because the battery life was absolutely terrible, the screen was cracked, the reception was awful, it was a 2.5 year old device, and I wanted a giant phablet with a stylus.
I upgraded from 4.3 on my Note because I wanted to try out the mighty Knoxraid that was being praised on this forum. If I was going to flash a custom ROM I figured that I might as well use one based on the latest version on Android, with or without ART.
I'm not trying to start a fight or anything. I'm just stating my opinion based on my experience with ART on my old rundown Galaxy Nexus and what I've read...
Let's not make this an argument over which roms are better than others....
Stay on topic, thanks.

Custom kernel for the Samsung Galaxy s5 active

I don't know if this is exactly the right place for this however I love this phone but there seems to be no support for modified kernels. Without a modified kernel it seems that adjusting the CPU frequency seems to be overwritten everytime on a rooted phone. I took a crash course in creating a kernel and implementing a few changes and I am currently running it on my phone now once it last a day or two I might go ahead and put it up here so that people can actually try it out. But in the meantime I will host how I was able to get the frequency scaling to work and increase the battery life while still making it very responsive. Unfortunately it will have to wait until I get home because I am at work however I am very happy with what I have done and it seems to be the fastest I have got this phone to go and still ridiculous battery life, it even seems a little snappier than my brothers galaxy note 4. Stay tuned for instruction
Looking forward to this man, thanks.

ok first unless you somehow have the much sought after keys to unlock the bootloader you DID NOT FLASH ANY CUSTOM KERNEL to an AT&T G870A
or
You do not have a G870A but rather an international or otherwise version of the phone.

I've already been using the AOSP MM custom ROM for several months now which is stable. So this one needs to be better, rootable, be installed through flashfire or twrp and have some obvious advantage for me to switch.

That's a shockingly slow, but better than never.
If marshmallow was released today, I would not update till we has a Working root.

I ****ing knew it
This is great news! I've always has awful battery life on lolipop and kitkat so hopefully marshmallow will improve things. As far as root goes, you should just be able to flash TWRP than systemless SuperSU or a modified boot image.
Wow! I'm so excited for this! The first thing I'm going to do is apply the work around for adoptive storage hehe

I am not sure in what way the Knox system prevents you from doing anything to your device. The Knox does not prevent you from rooting the device, installing TWRP, or from flashing roms. Samsung often calls Knox the "warranty bit", but that's a bull name that has no legal meaning.
I'm happy to hear that the marshmallow update is coming to this tablet. I have the 32gb version and I really like it. I had the nexus 7 2013 before this and tried some other tablets that have the marshmallow update like the Nvidia shield but I enjoy this tablet more. Coupled with a 128GB SD Card, I have a plethora of movies and books on it.

If I am note mistaken it's either Shot&More or another version of the Burst Mode.
I remember seeing this function in action, at their Live Broadcast Release Preview Introduction for either the Note 5 or the S6, but I cant find any youtube video of it.

I was only able to find one of the MODE apk that work, the rest of them won't install
The mode I finally found for my photo that I posted is called Surround Shot that has several other features.
I found a youtube video about it and I am sharing a link.
https://youtu.be/_Z943NlJ64g?t=2m4s
OK found out alittle more about the app in reference to my photo that I post. The app was release back when S6 was release. The app was called Shot and More that was under the Surround Shot app. So it was an app within an app within another app. Crazy. I was able to install the app but it not functional. The phone or app freezes for about 15 seconds and gives you an option to send a notification about the failure to Samsung. I went ahead and just beg Samsung to bring that app and Live Broadcast back!!! I'm sure i'm not the only one missing these apps.
Funny thing is that Samsung beg for us to stay with them after the failure of the Note 7, and said they made the Note 8 better.
In my eyes, removing some of the great software apps is not making me happy either. I think it's time for me to dump Samsung and just go with Google Pixel 2 XL....
Them removing these software is a deal breaker for me.
Here's a better youtube video of the "Surround Shot > Shot & More > Drama shot" that was added into the phone. https://youtu.be/TwKJttyNGss?t=3m12s
