Home made QI wireless charging? Anyone? - Sony Xperia ZR

Hi guys.....i love my zr but really disappointed with absence of accessories for it.
There are qi charging pads and accepters on aliexpress for 10 bucks a set... NOT FOR OWR PHONES of course.
I can fit in one inside of the rubber seal area and connect it with small wires to the battery.....
The question is.....have anyone tryed it before?

I wouldnt recommend forcing the pad under the battery door. If you look under there youll notice that the waterproofing works by letting the rubber gasket fall into a channel; if you add something thatll push the gasket away from the channel, it might be enough to let water in.
I actually just got my wireless charging pad for the Note 2 in the mail today. I'm planning to adapt it to my Xperia ZR but in a different way. I plan to put it between my phone and case, and connect it thru the docking connectors on the side of the phone. Ill update you with photos when im done if it comes out alright. Right now im just worried about how Im gonna get it to sit right without covering the flash.

Okay heres my update: i did what i was planning to; unfortunately its not incredibly elegant.
I used a charging pad for note 2 which i bought on ebay. The copper tips i used as pins for the charging pad were a bit bigger than they should have been so my case is a little warped on that side. Also the pressure from the case makes the pins not have great contact with the phone so it takes little fidgeting to get it to start charging. Besides that though it works fine. I set it on the wireless charger at night and the phone is at 100% in the morning.
This weekend im gonna redo the soldering of the pins with some slightly smaller ones and see if i can make it... prettier.
The only thing to keep in mind is that +5v is the pin closest to the top of the phone and gnd is the bottom one. I also had to modify the charging pad to g3t the flap to come out higher up from the pad, otherwise I would have had to cover the flash.
Sent from my GT-N8013 using XDA Free mobile app

Yet another update. I tried to make it more elegant by reducing the thickness of the pins but to no avail. Doing this mod with a tpu (flexible plastic) case was a waste of time since theres no way to keep pressure on the pins and make the case sit flush.

What about glueing the connector to the phone? With this solution no pressure from the plastic case is required I guess...

Inexpensive charging dock from Smartphonepedia

Just received this dock and have been using it for a couple of days.
Only $10 -- a cheap alternative so some of the 40-50$ options.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Data-Sy...531363?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3f1de5aea3
It's small, feels like a decent quality piece. It's glossy black with rubber feet on the bottom so it doesn't slide around. It keeps the Note 2 supported nicely when it's dropped in. It's got a floppy rubbery insert that you can take out if you have a case.
One con is that a few times when I've yanked my phone out, the rubber piece has either partially or completely come out. My advice would be to decide on a case of not and, if you leave the rubber insert in, put a drop of hot glue or something to keep the insert in place.
See pics below. Let me know if you have questions.

What voltage and amperes does it deliver?

I think it's cool man, it's just a simple charging dock. Great to keep at the office or your bedside.
So the only difference then my stock cable is my phone will be standing upward?...Lol...

Yes, it works with a slim case for me without even taking the rubber insert out. When you take the rubber insert out, there's a good 0.5-0.75cm around it, particularly the edges. A case with a big beefy back probably would not fit.

It doesn't come with a cable -- you use your phone's provided cable or anything else, so whatever those deliver. I just have a usb-to-microusb running from my computer to it and it works fine.

Sheesh guys. Think a little more outside your own world.
I have this dock connected to my computer at work. I walk in from a meeting, drop the phone in the charger (instead of setting it down, picking up the cable, jamming it in, etc) and it's immediately mounted as a drive on my computer and is charging anytime I'm at my desk. Need to run to a meeting? You just pick it up...no fussing with cables.
Nope, no spare battery. Surprise, most people don't need one. I spend half my day working at my desk, meaning my phone is charging half the day. In fact, I don't even feel like I ever "charge". It's just sitting in its stand. I never need to plug it in at home.
Nope, no USB or HDMI. Surprise, 99% of the people that use this phone care about that, so why pay for a $100 for a dock with it (that's the wrong color, BTW).
20 bucks? Wow, they saw you coming a mile off.
It's the same dock as this, which is in black or white.

You can just plug the phone into the dock without having to pick up the charge cable and plug it into the phone. Same for removing it from the dock. Since we have to charge the phone everyday, I would say the dock has a value.

wireless charging mod (s4 ACTIVE)

Heres the backround on what i did to get wireless charging going...
1) get palm coil and touchstone. i bought this on ebay for 10$ (just search touchstone charging kit)
2) carefully remove the coil from the back cover of the palm phone. plastic cover first then the rest.
3) what worked easiest for me was to keep all the coil stuff stuck to the removable plastic piece holding everything together, then you can simply stick it in the back of our active covers. (make sure when moving the magnets all the positive sides are facing towards the dock)
4) Connecting it. I tried doing this a couple different ways and i eventually ended up pulling tiny copper wire out of computer speaker cable and used it like a twist tie on the phone terminals (then small amount of electrical tape to separate them...which worked out fine)*I attempted to do the same on the coil side of the connection but that was a bust so i ended up soldering it.. not my first choice but since its on the palm coil not my active I did it.*
5) you should be all good to go at this point

Use a multimeter...if you dont know how, you probably shouldn't attempt this hack and should wait for an aftermarket back plate to come out
Out of curiosity, how strong are these magnets? Am I going to have to make sure that my phone gets nowhere near my credit cards (and other magnetic cards, media, etc.)?

They are fairly strong but I have yet to have any issues with my cards...however I usually keep my phone in a separate pocket
Have you tested the phones waterproof capabilities since you did this mod? I love the idea, want to do it, but im on the fence, as it seems it would make it very easy to make the waterproofing gasket fail with a small wire.... on the other hand, you dont have to take the back off, or open the charging port, so if it doesn't void the waterproofing, it could be even better
Obviously, if any wire or any part of the wireless receiver protrudes over the seal, the water resistance will be compromised, but that's not the only issue.
In the back panel replacement sticker on the back of the S4A, it tells you to press under the camera LED. Pressing there engages the rubber seal. The issue is that any of these non-oem wireless receivers is going to slightly lift the central portion of the back away from the phone. Thus, even if no part of the seal-line is breached, I still wouldn't trust that the seal could engage fully.
Don't get me wrong... I'm going to do something similar, since I'd rather have wireless charging. Still... until an OEM wireless charging backplate comes from Samsung, I'd assume it's an either/or situation. Wireless charging OR water resistance.

I will fix the wire issue by using copper tape. I'm excited to try it...
I am doing this mod tonight and I thought I would share some information.
See below for the information I have gathered:
Yellow lines = Copper tape- as you can tell it gets very cramped around the end because of the gasket. I may need to use a different path or wires like the OP. The important stuff to gather from this is which is positive and which is negative on both the phone and the palm pre touchstone.
Nice idea, curious to see how this works out.
Update
My copper tape has not arrived but I installed everything else. It does appear that the coil makes the rear housing push out which leads me to believe it will not do well to repel water away from the seal during extended use but I would prefer wireless charging
If you plan on using a case I would recommend ordering stronger magnets from supermagnets.com part number Disc - D1046. These should work well with any case and it will fit more snug because they are a lot stronger. I will update with photos once the copper tape is installed and everything is working.

The battery door is different. In theory it will work but you would have to figure out a way to gut the back plate and that would be a lot harder than palm's touchstone mod. Or just wait for the active's wireless back plate to be released. This is a lot cheaper IMO $10 vs $30-150
Ya I just realized this. But still do you think the wireless charger receiver tag could work? If you search on Amazon or Ebay "Galaxy S4 wireless charging receiver tag" there's the component which is stuck inside the back cover Samsung is selling. Except it can be bought for $10-20 and most likely can fit in the Active. I don't know because I have the original S4 but just trying to throw out some ideas. In theory if the tag works you can get it for $15 then use any Qi charger and you're good. While not quite as cheap it's only a few bucks more and much easier and looks way better probably. That is if it works of course.

Charge port flap

I have just noticed that the rubber on my charge port flap is loose from the flap on both long sides but still attached to the ends. I do not know if it is torn from the flap or unstuck. Does anyone else have this problem? I think my phone's water resistant capability has been compromised.
I've also noticed that the flaps for the charger port and the micro sd slot are made with a thinner and probably less durable rubber seal than the headphone and dim card flaps.

I would send it to sony and buy myself a docking station
I've noticed with mine that the use port flap doesn't always close/seal first time as it pushes itself back out. Have to push it in a certain way before it stays closed, is going to go back via my network first as warranty is with them.
Something wrong with the flap either way for both of us
Yes docking station is ur best bet. I try to use my flaps as minimum as I can. Or if u use them a lot leave them open most of the time.

Did you lose the flap? Or do you still have it? If you have it, did you just rip it out of the hole? Or did the piece that goes between the flap and the whole break? I've caught mine and pulled it out like 3 or 4 times, but I've always been able to get it back in with some effort.

tough luck there mate,
TBH i wouldn't call that a charging port either that would be the micro usb port,
ive used it all but 4 times myself when i first rooted my phone,
u use a maglock charger or use the dock, as the usb port isnt made for everyday use
thats why they put the charging dock in the box when you buy it
it also charges faster through the dock/maglock than via the usb
id just push the port back in and get a maglock charger or use your dock
Not everyone got a free dock with their phone.

Yup. I didn't get a dock with my Z1.
My flap also broke off. I bought the replacement for ~10$. Plastic part is still inside though. Since my glass on the back broke off I called service that is authorised by Sony (so I won't lose warranty for repair) and they put a reasonable price for back glass replacement. 250PLN. It's not crazy high, but isn't a 6pack. I asked how much will cost the replacing of the flap if I provide the replacement part along with the regular cost of the flap replacement and the woman on the phone said that that'll be free.
Ask about the price if you provide a replacement.

I guess I'm getting a dock now. I have tmobile as well and if they charge for this kind of stuff, I'd rather just pay the $10 and get a dock.
I broke my flap as well..feel asleep on the phone while it was charging. Got a replacement from witrigs website.
However, a small piece of plastic was left inside and I used a pin to take it out..wasn't as easy as I thought...the hole is really small...and my pin wasn't as thin as I'd like.
Putting the replacement was easy..used the same pin to just push it in lol

How long did it take you to receive it?
My flap just broke off tonight, I plan to call Sony in the morning to order a replacement.. Just trying to see how long of a wait I'm looking at. My phone looks ugly on that side now, ugh.
I had a piece stuck in there just like you, had my wife get it out with a sewing pin (thanks to your advice).
Lesson learned, once Sony confirms they're sending me a replacement flap I plan to order the official Sony charging doc for the Z1 (everyone I've heard talking about it says it does indeed fit the Z1s) from their site.

Charging socket flap

I went to AT&T to try out the S5.
Overall a very nice phone however the one thing that I think will annoy the hell out of me is having to fiddle with that flap every time it's time to charge the phone.
I found it really hard to open and after a few tries I managed to get my finger nail under the slight lip but it was not very comfortable to do.
How are the rest of yo owners finding the handling of this flap?
I will be using a robust case for mine so wireless charging is out for me.
I heard back from both Spigen and Case-Mate who both said that it's unlikely charging would work through their cases and that's assuming the phone will still fit with the slightly larger charging back.

That's the only thing that I find annoying about the S5. I understand it needs to be covered for water/dust resistance, but it's still incredibly annoying. I have short nails (stupid nail-biting habit) so trying to open it is always a chore. I've actually resorted to using a small thumb-tac (lol) to open it and it works perfectly every time.
I'll definitely be looking at wireless charging options once they're readily available. I rarely use a case on my S5, just because I like how it feels in the hand without one, so the different back shouldn't be an issue.
I like knowing that dirt, dust and curious little kid fingers won't be able to affect the port. I have an otterbox that has a decent opening to allow for charging, been using it all day and its around 55% batt, so I'll be okay with the cover.
I have the spigen tough armor case and I can charge the phone with no problem. It's a minor inconvenience but it's worth having the peace of mind against getting water damage.

The Samsung charging cover will be available soon. It works with any Qi charging pad.
My wife has been using the S4 Active since her S3 had an unfortunate dunking. The S5 charging cover is much easier to use and and worth the effort if you've ever dealt with dropping the phone into, say, the washing machine.

I kept the wireless charging pad from my GS4 im just waiting to get that wireless door battery... For now ill just have no choice to open/close the flap which takes 2 secs... I also saw a sview cover wireless charging battery door, a bit more expensive...

Not being "lazy" but I have gel tips on my nails.. therefore opening this door without one of my kids/boyfriend or a thumbtack etc. is impossible for me. My 17-year-old suggested I rip it off but I refused because I want the dust and waterproof to remain.
I think the flap is the unfortunate, necessary evil for the water/dust proofing feature of the phone. I am not a fan of it either but it is what it is.
