Phone slows down when accessing internal memory - LG Optimus 4X HD

Hi, I'm using Cyanogenmod 10.1.2 stable version with the kernel that comes with this release.
I noticed a strange problem, every time I'm saving something to internal memory, phone slows down.
Example: I take a picture and I want to share it via WhatsApp, everything slows down, even gets unresponsive for 20 seconds. The same thing happens when I take a screenshot, or when I download / update any app.
Apart from that, the phone doesn't seem to have any other problems.

The phone isn't the fastest thing in the world but the behavior your describing isn't quite "normal".
For a start, in my opinion the CM native kernel is a little slow, I'm gonna ask you to try Iodak kernel (for now) to see if helps.
Flash 9.5 from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2270308
I'd eventually try an app to measure the IO performance in the internal memory for comparing, but I can't think of an app now (no access to play store atm), so let us know if anything changes after flashing Iodak kernel.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that this kind of behavior happened on stock ROM as well as on CM with Iodak and Werewolf kernel. My friend was using stock CM10 kernel on her phone and everything seemed fast enough so I tried it also but the problem remains.
EDIT:
I ran this benchmark: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.passmark.pt_mobile
My results for internal storage write were 11,9 MBytes/Sec and for reading: 31,7 MBytes/Sec

Do you notice that behavior only with WhatsApp? Can you give us more examples?
Also, you can use AndroBench (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.andromeda.androbench2) and post the results?
I'm thinking that something else is causing the lag, WhatsApp sometimes just hangs on me for a while (also uses sdcard to store logs).

WhatsApp works fine when I'm sending a picture that was previously saved.
This kind of behavior happens also with Kik, Facebook messenger, and in general;
When I update any application, the phone becomes almost unresponsive for 10-20 seconds, every single time.
Here is the screenshot from androbench: https://db.tt/KAoi3zoX
I created this screenshot and it took 10 seconds for the phone to start reacting normally again..

I experienced lots of different behaviors, sometimes even with the same configuration. Becoming unresponsive for a while when updating apps isn't uncommon. I experience that, I'm sure lot's of users around here do. You could try changing the sdcard readahead to 2048 and see if makes a difference (or to 1024, etc..) and see what configuration your friend's phone is using. You can also use Kernel Tuner, Performance Control or any tweaking app which allows you to change governors / cpu frequencies / sdcard readahead to changes these things.
Also, OOM values can also influence the user experience (these can be checked / changes using Kernel Tuner for example).
Will run Androbench soon as I can and i will post and compare.
Update:
Alright here's mine - Although there are differences (specially on the sequential write), I don't think it's exactly that, that is causing your issue.
Can more users do the test with Androbench and post their results ?

From looking at this my phone should even be faster

Looking at the three images, it makes me thing its kinda random almost lol.
Try fstrim from the market... run it.. maybe will help... I'm a little lost here. Need more info.. you saying this happened to every rom you tried?

It happened on stock ROM and on CM 10.1.2 stable (with iodak kernel and with cm kernel).
I didn't try any other ROMs.
I just ordered Nexus 5 and I will give this phone to my brother, so while I'm wiping all the data I can try another ROM if you think that could help..

In my opinion, I'd use CM 10.1.2 stable (android 4.2.2), runs fantastic and everything works. If your brother wants to give a go at KitKat, go ahead, but stability? CM10.1.2. For sure.
There's also a couple Stock roms around here and the web, there's one called "JBS (just better stock), google it it's light and fast.

Goodbye to such sayings like "My battery lasts 4-7 hours" or "about 10% per hour"
The value refreshes every 30 seconds at most!
Set the update intervall to 1 min and leave your phone for 10 minutes in standby to check the standby current.
Note: Unplug the charger!
Note 2: It seems that you need a working battery driver!
I think we can use this thread for reporting the currents of the different builds (settings, kernels, WM ROMs etc.) to find the best battery saving build/combination.
So please report your best (standby) values here!!
(with Build, Kernel, WM Rom, maybe Radio ROM)
Download:
All devices:
Search in the market for "CurrentWidget" or download the CurrentWidget_v0.16.apk from below (and place it in /andboot/androidapps folder on your storage card).
Xperia X1 aka HTC Kovsky:
Linux MSM/Tremere's Kernel:
With xdandroid build download CurrentWidget_v0.16.apk
With CM6 and other builds download CurrentWidget_all.apk
sp3dev's Kernel:
Take the market version or download CurrentWidget_x1.apk and place it in /andboot/androidapps folder on your storage card
Thanks to the developer Ran Manor!!

There is also a donate version in the market
Updated: 07.11.2010
Build: XDAndroid FRX01
Kernel: sp3dev's new kernel
WM ROM: Laurenti's 40MB ROM
Standby: 15mA - 30mA

This data is 100% correct becouse its true data.
If phone dies after 6 hours its 100% correct data.
% per hour is also correct and valid data becouse its measured in WM.
Who can guarantee that data from this application is true. It gets data via android...the same background as battery life and status which is incorrect.

No it's not. Only the current is 100% correct.
You wanna say "4-7 hours" is correct?
You also can't say "the phone dies after 6 hours EXACTLY".. 6 hours standby? Light use? Heavy use? What means "light use" ?

It's the same reading like in Tremere's "current.sh".
You wanna call Tremere's work into question?
Hi
Build: 03-10-2010 Special Edition-CyanogenMod6.0 Sony Xperia X1
Kernel: XDAndroid-kernel dated 28-08-2010
WM ROM: Shady313 Make Your Own Series [23134 Release 1][29/08/10]
I'm running Neopeeks 03-10-2010 "Special Edition-CyanogenMod6.0 Sony Xperia X1". Followed all of the steps in Neo's setup exactly.
Have turned off absolutely everything in Android but I still get readings ranging between 650mAh in standby up to approx 820mAh according to my own readings and confirmed by the log.
Suggestions/ideas anyone in how to decrease the current?

I always put all android ports under same enviroment and same configuration. And i test it for one hour without any use. So its reliable data for comparision.
And is there anything more reliable than the fact that with one port your phone works on stanby without any use for 4 hours, other for 6 hours, and other for 2 hours. This is 100% correct data.
Your phone can feed you with information that consumption is low and state is ex. 50% but who cares when in reality your battery is empty and your phone shuts down.

As far as i know battery status and state is incorrect and not reliable in android ports for X1. What makes this data from this Widget reliable when it comes from same background as battery status and state.
Im not beeing offensive and im not an expert. Im just trying to see things logicly.

It seems that you need a working batttery driver for correct readings..
so use Tremere's kernel 27/9..
Or did you still leave your charger plugged in?
Updated first post with a version for other android builds than xdandroid (i.e. CM6).
(Remember to use Tremere's kernel!)

I have no clue what happened....my galaxy was working fine...laggy a bit, but nothing i cant handle. I was at a club last night and recorded a 20 mins video...its saved. So as of this mornign my galaxy has been crawlingggg to load things....everything is either delayed or going really slow. NoLed is slow, chomp sms popup is slow....this phone is starting to commit suicide or something....any ideas why my phone started to all of a sudden lag alot?....when it didnt before???....and no lag fix is not a option for me.
Back up the video on your pc then delete it from the phone and see if that restores it back to its original speed.

i have auto killer and i just use stock task manager...as alot of people have been saying other task managers are useless cause Android OS is designed to handle it....confused....
the stock task manager is not that great, and the widget only works on the stock launcher.
the task manager the one i linked you can setup white list and black list
so it will automatically allow what to run, and kill what should not be running on its own
I wouldn't of used Kies to make the transfer, should've used a mass storage and transferred it using windows explorer. Also, I'd advocate against the task manager. I haven't used one on the SGS in about 2 months, back when I did I never let it run 24/7, sometimes I'd manually open it and kill almost all tasks. Task killers, such as ATK, will almost surely hurt your battery life if you let them run in the background, in fact, I'd even bet on it.
These days, I try to keep all my favorite programs in the background (unless they use CPU while idle, but even GTalk is great on battery life, as is LauncherPro and the widgets I have elected to keep). As long as you use the same 10-20 apps you should be fine, even if you use more you might be fine but not quite as good depending on how many apps you have loaded and storage space you use in total.
Since I highly doubt that the file size was huge and would overload the system, I wonder if a bug either sprang up and/or (maybe more likely) you created a hardware problem such as overheating your phone and processor and are now having issues. If nothing else works, try to back up all your apps and info to an SD card and then do a factory reset. If your problems continue then it's hardware.
Now I dont know whether to.keep the task apps or not lol...2 different opinions here...

The lagfixes don't increase the amount of writes to the internal SD and they certainly don't break it. Any of the lagfixes in the FAQ (see my sig) are well tested and nearly 100% safe. I would definitely recommend to either use voodoo or the modded version that uses the stock-kernel. You won't believe your eyes.
The reason your phone got so damn slow was because of RFS. The camera APP caches on the /data partition and when it does so, it created a massive amount of file system errors (a related thread can be found here).

Don't many developers etc say not to run task killers? They actually cause more drain on the phone and battery?
http://lifehacker.com/5650894/andro...ed-what-they-do-and-why-you-shouldnt-use-them
Note, however, that this is still a contested notion. A lot of developers (including ROM builder extraordinaire, Cyanogen) will not even look at your bug reports if you're using a task killer. In this humble blogger's opinion, your best bet is to stay away from regular task killer usage entirely.

i trust the hard fact results of the good it is doing in my phone, rather than some biased believes that just lags the phone if not actioned upon.
I dont know if I would call advice from well known developers as biased. Especially considering several others have shared this setiment. But what ever floats your boat. You are some what of a mr know it all here...

think about it logically, you do nothing to the phone and it lags like hell
or you can install legit software which easily lets you choose what to run and what not to run
result: system is squeaky clean and snappy fast
vs.
do nothing: system lags like hell, come to the forum complain the phone lags and claim other people are right we should do nothing and have an unusable phone.
Well the lag on my phone is minimal, it actually performs quite well. My phone died without any lag fixes etc, so I am not putting any of that on now. My problem is GPS is useless and the random shutdowns.

Are you still working on a 2.3 ROM? Can a n008 offer any assistance? I really want to get my feet wet in development (apps or ROMs), so if I can be at all useful I will be.

idk if you are doing this, but it won't hurt to repeat it
make sure you wipe data/cache before you capture the cmw image this way you can avoid some issues for people flashing
I'll be flashing this in a sec, here. Gotta love more Streak 7 devs!
Did you make this in ROM Kitchen? If so, how did you go about it? I couldn't get ROM Kitchen to work on my S7.
Great to see some more developers! I'll definitely give this a go.
So I loaded it up and slapped on Zeam launcher; I have to say, it's pretty nice. This is basically vanilla, stock 2.2.2 with the bloat removed and a black bar (with some Gingerbread theme touches here and there). This is a great alternative to stock, and seems to run everything really smoothly. Nice mod!
Looking forward to the weekend version!
But quick question, if i go about flashing this, while in DJs HS7, do i have to return back to the stock then flash cwm then flash the rom?

FroYo has very good, built in task management. Task killers generally hurt performance and battery life. Android isn't Windows; it's Linux. Having little free memory isn't a bad thing.

Hence why I said "maybe " a task killer. Mine without one hits that critical 40 - 50 mb ram level where things start to lag (I have a ton of apps installed which like to run as a background service even though I only use them once or twice a week) . Also if you researched.... most task killers do NOT REPLACE stock task management....they merely lower or raise values already in place. This means closing idle processes a little faster than default ( if I don't use an application in 12 hrs....do I really need it running in the background??????) Also, you can set limits on oom values for specific tasks so they have a lower / higher priority. There are absolutely advantages to task managers......
One good example...... without it, when my memory ran in the critical 40 mb range, ebuddy services would shut off.....which is one app I WANT running 24/7. Using a task manager I can set its oom value to -17mb which virtually keeps it alive even if the system goes into swap. Also another I change values on is gmail so it can background sync and I don't worry about it closing syncing services.
Anyway, I hope that clears some things up for you if you ran as many apps as I do, and don't have a completely fresh installed os, they are absolutely helpful I know that free ram ia wasted ram ....but that only holds true until you hit the levels at which the system needs to operate properly. Don't forget....you DO need SOME ram for cache / swap!!! ( 70-100mb free keeps things perfectly smooth)
Also, an fyi for you. I know android isn't windows. I am linux guy myself and have compiled many things from source. While I may not be a GURU, im no where near a novice. I understand how the OS works. Try running ubuntu 11 on 64 -128 mb ram and tell me how free ram isn't important.

LOLZ, ubuntu?
Vanilla linux can run fine on 64mb of ram
Sure it can...but not with a current version of gnome or kde maybe using xfce or window maker. Those don't need much resource. I stated ubuntu due to its popularity lol
Was just making a point on the necessity of SOME free ram
Side note.... did you see ubuntu is functional on the streak 7 ???? Awesome!! I can't wait until it is completely ready to go. I've been experimenting trying to get any desktop session up and running but no good so far It wont be long though!!!

Xperia ZR C5502 (IN) 4.1.2 stock internal memory dump?

Hi everyone,
My friend did a factory reset on her C5502 running 4.1.2 (.310 firmware), unfortunately she checked "wipe internal memory"
The phone reset went fine, its functional now... but the stock Sony images, music and videos are gone.
She wants them back, because she likes the "pretty pictures" and stuff.
Any idea where I can find a stock 4.1.2 internal memory dump of the default media that comes with the phone?
Or could anybody (maybe people who bought the phone recently) be kind enough to archive and upload it?
Regards,
Skittelor

The files have been permanently deleted, no way to recover them.
Yes, but since the stock media on all such phones is the same... I was hoping someone could upload and tell me where to place it in int memory.
If anyone could take the trouble, I'd really appreciate it.
i will upload the pictures for you but give me time because i have slow connection

Excellent, thanks xwatax
Could you please upload all the media? (stock pics, stock videos and stock mp3s)... and let me know their location in the internal memory.
Take your time, I'm not in a big hurry.
Thanks again and cheers.
4.1.2
hi,
do you have the link to stock 4.1.2 ROM for 5502.
i have updated to kitkat, but i want to downgrade back to 4.1.2 or 4.2.2
they seem more stable , no heating issues or battery drain.

on 4.4.2 I don't have battery drain or heating issue, on the contrary I think battery usage is pretty better and phone stays up longer than 4.2!
Seriously ?

Sijav, you are an advanced user, you have setup your smartphone how it should act ie, according to your needs. Even I setup my XZR in such manner but for rest of the "non-advanced" users they can't do such things until they spend time on personalizing their smartphone. I do know that 4.4 is much sleek and faster than previous versions. But with all due respect to Sony Devs, they messed it up in 4.4 and I guess you too believe it, if not, I am not forcing you to believe it, but this is what I feel that previous versions did not need much of tweaking etc, but 4.4 needs loads of stuff to be loaded. I stay on 4.4 only for one reason, that I can use the latest apps by Sony. :good: :good: :good: :good:

Nope what I did was just a full flash of the rom and it worked as it should (with all google services working correctly after update)
I've showed you guys that 3 days battery remained with heavy use of calling and sms ing (all in 2G) data off, wifi always on, wifi location based on, normal internet use, normal games (traffic racer and Temple run), gps always on (used 3 hours in total for direction) and normal pm send and receive that is all! (with of course auto-low brightness) and always stamina on.
so yeah, I pretty use my phone like a normal ppl as I have a lot of works to do than temper with my phone (so unfortunate I use to be a heavy optimizer before)
so NO plugin or xposed or other apps than line, viber, qq, hangout, facebook, google+, instagram, Traffic Racer and Temple run was installed by me and everything went great!!
I'm not gonna argue that this rom is much better than 4.2.2, yeah 4.2.2 was the stable droid of all in droid world (either cm, stock samsung, stock htc, stock motorolla, stock sony, etc.) but yet Sony did not bring us a smooth rom (sure)! it's pretty heavy but still our battery life is pretty great and it seems that with all those heavy processing still they care about the battery and still with gpu rendering always on battery is a great show than 4.2 or even 4.3.
hi sijav,
thanks for the advice, and it seems you recommend that i continue with kitkat, rather than downgrading to 4.2.2.
could you suggest some settings on stock ROM 4.4.2 so that i am able to get better battery life out of my XZR, earlier with 4.2.2 i remember , i could easily pull off a day's worth (battery juice)with additional 30-35 % balance , but with kitkat mobile drains out before the day ends .........
suggestions plz.

hi nikhil,

Severe memory leak.

I've noticed there is a memory leak after using the device for long periods of time, it's becoming a bit slow and closes a lot of apps that it shouldn't.
Also, opening the camera and using it a little, makes all apps to be reloaded.
I honestly don't feel this has 6 gb of ram, Huawei need to solve those issues, let's make them aware

I'm not sure why no on is replying to you. I have the Mate 20 X and I noticed this as well. All of my apps were refreshing the other day. My Google Podcast app even closed while I was doing something else. And I couldn't even jump back and forth between two apps without them refreshing. Then I started getting a camera error and it wouldn't go away until I rebooted. After rebooting, everything was fine. Rinse and repeat. This has happened to me several times. While it's nice to know that a reboot fixes it, it's a pretty bad memory leak. I have the International model, so I don't see an update coming any time soon.

It's not a memory leak.... The data collection buffer gets full, and a reboot resets this. China intelligence FTW.
....... JK
I've noticed that the camera and 3D live maker, kills all apps after 2 minutes of using those.
I remember the gs7e has done the same but camon, it's annoying that I'll open the camera, and everything will be reloaded.
Also besides Hauwei, Google made some improvements to the memory management in Android Pie, that could be also one of the reasons why.
I get non of this and the lack of replies proves the fact it doesn't exist. I have used mine since I received it with zero slow down.
The apps closing is because of the management of apps in the background. You can set the apps manually so they can run in the background.
This is done by "AI" so if you manage them manually you set them to run in the background and they won't get killed.

Your phone is faulty or you're trolling. The pixel 3 is crap, what you're describing here doesn't exist!
Having the same issue but I don't think it's a memory leak. Just Huawei agressive style of handling ram/apps.
Phone doesn't like anything not installed by defualt.
the memory management is horrifically aggressive. It'll be the thing that makes me get rid of it if I cant sort it out. I'm assuming this has happened with one of the updates as I've watched youtube videos of this phone being amazing on the speed tests and keeping apps in memory. Assume this was either on a pre-release ROM or an early version that reviewers are most likely to use.

My phone wont even do play-store automatic updates overnight while charging (like EVERY other phone i've ever had has been able to do).

You're the only one trolling here. Are you really such a hardcore fanboy that you're incapable of acknowledging that it could be a different software build? Chinese version vs International? I just got an update on my International model yesterday which may or may not have resolved this. It doesn't mean it wasn't a real issue. I have owned just about every major smartphone since the original iPhone, including all of the Mate phones and I also test them for a living. Some of us are actually speaking from experience, not bias.
Issue is there, but using open camera doesn't kill tasks compared to stock app, so it's hauwei aggressive memory management again.
Not noticed anything here, I sometimes have quite a heavy usage, multiple apps. No unintended closed apps. Phone is always very fast. Looking into the phone manager from time to time there's always 95% free.

I'm a one app at once guy... so no problem for me, i always close the app after i use it
The memory management on this phone is definitely rather strange. Yes, you can force specific apps to stay prioritized in the background, but it doesn't seem like there are any benefits to the hyper-aggressive method Huawei employs. What I find irritating isn't the way resident apps are juggled, but the way the app you are using acts like it is being starved of ram all the time. I need to try out a bunch of different browsers, so far the few I have been using feel like I am running a 2015 build of Chrome on a Windows machine with 256 Meg of Ram.
Try removing the stock launcher, and you will see a big difference m

So the stock launcher is the culprit? Any other bloatware that we can remove??

I have the exact same problem on my Mate 20 Pro.
Works great after reboot but after using it I sometimes can't even go to switch app mode and return to app without it reloading. Since it is coming with time used I also think it is a memory mangement problem.
I am on EMUI 9.0.0.153
Removing Huawei launcher via ADB, seems to fix some of it, but it's annoying nonetheless
I have the same issue. After using the device for some time, from Developer Options > Running Services, the System portion consumes most of the memory, leaving very little left for cached processes.

After a reboot, the System memory usages goes down to normal, until normal usage causes it to build up again until another reboot is required.
It definitely looks like some kind of memory leak.
Same issue here. I wish there was a way to schedule a restart overnight.
