[Q] Finding Cellular Network Information - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know of a way to discover what type of network your cellular company has deployed through the settings of the Xperia Z? I don't mean hspa, hspa+, or LTE. More specific things spectrum being deployed in 5 x 5, 10 x 10, 15 x15 configurations, etc. Maybe an app that can display this information?
T-Mobile US is doing some massive network upgrades right now and some phones can display this information in the deeper settings of the phone. People are reporting great jumps in network speeds in the past 2 weeks and noticing the configuration have increased. I've gone into the settings under *#*#4636#*#* and *#*#7378423#*#* but didn't see anything specific on what is actually deployed by the cell company and being used by the phone.
I'm using a T-Mobile branded Xperia Z phone but the software is generic c6603 android 4.4.2, build 10.5.A.0.230. In case that info is needed to answer the question.
Thanks for any suggestions.

[Q] HELP UK model with serious signal issues on ATT in the USA

Hi all, well my One arrived from the UK today.. As I feared it does not have the ATT LTE bands that PDAbd.net suggested it had, bummer, but I can live with HSDPA... Set up the phone, it asks me to select the operator I am unsing, with ATT as the first choice... all goes well.. I load it up and initial impressions... WOW.. what a great phone.
BUT and and very BIG BUT.... the signal is terrible... bouncing from no signal to 2 bars and displaying H one minute, 3G the next and then E...
Driving down a notorious road it drops the call at least half a mile before typical and doesn't pick it up again until even later..
Does anyone know if there are any setting I can adjust to optimize to ATT?
I really do not want to put it is back in the box, but unless someone has a suggestion for me, I have no choice...
Help!!
Many thanks,
Nick
A quick question. Where did you get your HTC One? And have you used any other HTC Phones before and got good signal with it?

Hi There,
I bought it in the UK. It was a legitimate HTC supplier and an unlocked model 801n.
I have used a couple HTC phones in the past:
ATT 8X - worked well (at least as far as signal was concerned, but that was the ATT model)
I also had a Verizon Incredible, but since that is a different provider, I am ignoring it.
Other phones I have right now adn tested in the same location with the same SIM:
1. ATT - Galaxy note 2 - good signal no issues
2. ATT LG Optimus G - Good signal no issues
3. ATT Iphone 5 Good signal no issues
4. ATT Nokia 920 - good signal no issues
5. Blackberry Z10 - unbelievably good signal - no issues - Unlocked ATT bands, not ATT branded (Purchased from Expansys USA)
This is why I am wondering whether it is some kind of optimization issue. I cannot believe HTC could have made such a mistake in design. Also, if I switch to GSM only, I have full bars.... It is only on 3G and HSDPA that the signal is poor and the display oscillates between 3G and H
Any advice?
Many thanks,
Nick
Are you rooted? The solution is disabling fast dormancy on HTC One. New HTC devices enables fast dormancy by default which affects & weakens signal strength on networks that doesn't support it yet. If not I am not aware of any ways to disable it without root yet. I'll update you if I find one.
On UK almost all networks do support fast dormancy already except for Three UK so that maybe the reason why it's enabled by default in the US however I am not aware of the implementation of network carriers there sorry.

No I am not rooted - what will I lose if I root it? Do you know of a link to a simple thread with rooting instructions and how to disable the fast dormancy? I am not super experienced with Android yet
Does anyone know whether ATT supports fast dormancy of not?
Also, I have been led to believe that the One supports a number of carrier frequencies, but they only enable those for the specific region it is sold in. Do you know if there is a way to enable the other frequencies? Or is this just an unfounded rumor? Also, do you know if there is a way to check which LTE band the phone I have is equipped with - Not an on-line reference, but a way to find it on the phone?
Many thanks!!
Your warranty if you mess something in the software's side like bricking your phone & OTA updates. But you'll be able to update anyways just by directly flashing on the phone.
Anyways here's a noob proof app to rooting. Please do some research first before going so you'll not mess this up.

And... No. AT&T doesn't support fast dormancy.

Check this regarding what is Fast Dormancy and tell us if it works(probably NOT (it works only to samsung phones) but it is easy to try) http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-international/674208-fast-dormancy-in-nutshell.html
"To turn FD on/off enter *#9900# in the dialler to get into the SysDump screen then select the Fast Dormancy option"
You mind sharing the link if they have stock? Good luck with the signal issue.

I had a friend with an international GS2 with the same problem. Constantly bounced from HSPA+ to 3G to EDGE to no signal. I'm 99% sure that the issue is network settings, you likely need to check SIM card, data plan provisioning, APNs, etc.

Hey, thanks - Do you know what settings I should use? I have an LTE provisioned SIM card...I assume that should be ok, since the phone is LTE enabled, just wrong bands? I have tried with Auto LTE on and of - I currently have it on GSM/WCDMA - it has been working better the past day, but it is still not right..
The SIM works perfectly in the Note 2, Optimus G etc. So I am wondering whether I need to look at the APN or something like that, but I do not know what the best settings should be. Anyone have this info?
Many thanks,
Nick

APN shouldn't affect your mobile signal reception. It's just made for cellular data profiling. So you are able to connect to the internet.
How about try setting your network selection mode to manual and just select the top most usable network there?
Interesting... I am in Korea right now and have great signal... no issues at all. However, my data indicator is still bouncing between H and 3G, so that is very strange...
Despite the indicated low signal and bouncing data connection type indicator, the phone is working well, have not dropped a call recently and excellent phone call quality...
NO LTE connection in Korea though.. I assume that is probably due to ATT not having a LTE roaming data service agreement here? I believe my phone has at least one LTE band that it supported here.
Have fun..
Nick
I think u should talk to att people may be they can help? With the signal issue or the data connection issues!

I can't really help you but as far as I know LTE is already unlocked and working on all international S4 Actives. Mine certainly worked perfectly out of the box - although I turned it off promptly because I have ****ty 4G coverage where I live so it was nothing but a battery drain for me.
Are you sure you have a 4G sim card, and that you are in an area where 4G has coverage?
If you go in under settings > connections > more networks > mobile networks > network mode don't you have the LTE option at the top?

Im not 100% but i got the textmessage from my provider, so i recon they only send it to people who are able to use the 4G.
Yes, i am in a 4g coverage area
i dont have the LTE option at the top no. i have:
- wcdma/gsm
- only wcdma
- only gsm

Well then I really have no idea - the only thing I can think of is that you might need to replace your sim card if your provider didn't already do so in advance of the 4G rollout. Hopefully someone with more information might step in here, but the international version is LTE capable out of the box. If you don't hear anything else I'd suggest to try and contact vodafone and get a clear answer from them first.
If you check the mobile networks in your area and don't see anything that supports LTE, you may just live in an area that doesn't have it yet (people get 4G and LTE somewhat mixed up - 4G is the overall identifier for a whole class of technologies with "4th generation cellular networks" basically while LTE is technically one of those technologies so, it should rightfully be classified as 4G in most respects.
Having said that, the only way I got my GS4A to function in LTE mode - meaning it actually shows LTE in the notification bar under the 4 with a small G and LTE underneath it - was to go into the service menu (*#*#4636#*#*) and change the preferred network type to either LTE only or LTE/GSM auto (PRL). Once I did that the radio would reset and connect and then it would be in proper LTE mode. Doing a speedtest with the Speedtest.net app shows LTE as the connection whereas with my standard setting which is WCDMA Preferred (T-Mobile AWS) it'll just show as "4G."
I've had no luck making alterations in the Settings/Mobile Networks section, I have to change it in the service menu to get LTE functional. I don't use it because here in Vegas where I live (specifically my home location) the LTE mode gets me about 1-2 bars of signal (about 8-12Mbps) whereas the WCDMA Preferred setting pulls in 5 bars rock solid and 25-35Mbps.
Can't do screenshots or I'd add them, I'm running the pre-release MI2 ROM presently and that aspect is borked.

That would be because you're on the i537 from ATT, rather than the i9295 that this discussion is about. I checked google and vodafone holland does indeed use LTE on the right bands in its brand new rollout, so it isn't that - most likely it's his sim that needs replacing or it's just not activated on his account yet.

LTE on a C6602 Firmware

Hi All, Long time listener, first time caller, big fan of this place.
I have a T-Mobile Xperia Z, originally an LTE phone. For the sheer purpose of preference (and 1 bug) I switched over to a C6602 firmware. It gets the job done speed wise, and now I can do MMS (which I couldn't do on LTE, never figured that one out). So I have been quite happy with it. Today I made some changes in my status bar toggles (quick settings) and when I went to check it I had added the LTE icon. Out of sheer curiousity before removing it, I clicked it on, and low and behold, my phone switched over to LTE mode and I am surfing. (I base this solely on the status bar icon)
What gives, this firmware isn't for LTE, says just about every page talking about that firmware, but yet it says LTE and I am surfing at a nice speed. Am I to assume I am still rocking the H+ or am I really on LTE, despite the icon. Any way to find out for sure.
I checked *#*#4636#*#* but that's not real conclusive because I don't know exactly what I am reading, because under GSM Service, it says In Service, but under network type, it says LTE.
Have I discovered something, or have I been fooled. Couldn't find the answer, so I thought I would ask ???
Thanks in advance, sorry I talk to so much, just trying to be descriptive.
Hmmm, actually I found another page about the same thing, apparently it can.

Nah! That thread you're quoting.is for enabling (unlocking) LTE capability in a 6602 device (by software or by hardware recoding as the device is not LTE capable, out of the box)... What you're experiencing is LTE on a 6603 in a LTE environment, with a LTE micro-SIM (hence, LTE capable device), in spite of running a HSPA ROM (meant for a 6602 device). It's like chalk and cheese...different lines of thought....

[Q] Verizon XLTE and Moto X

I currently reside in one of the cities that has received the XLTE rollout. According to everything I have read, XLTE is just AWS renamed. It runs on Band 4. Any network test that I have have done has reported that I am connected to Band 13. Is the network supposed to connect to Band 4 automatically, or is there some hidden setting on the Moto X that I need to enable? Thanks.
As long as your rom/radio is on 4.4 or 4.4.2 you should see LTE Band 4 (assuming its available in your area).
What are you using to display what band number you are on? I haven't found anything which actually displays it.
I was using LTE Discovery - it listed network as 13, but that may just be coincidence. My Moto X is running 4.4 rooted.
My network is listed as 4. But still only downloading at 2000k

The "XLTE" launch isn't necessarily supposed to increase your speeds. Its purpose is to prevent overcrowding and increase capacity. If half the phones are using AWS on 1700/2100, and half are using 700mhz LTE, the network can support twice as many users without degradation.
You would *think* however, that as new as the VZW AWS Spectrum is and as few devices that support it, that you would experience faster speeds....but propagation and the data backhual of the particular tower you're connected to play a large role as well.

Unlocking LTE bands on a US Cellular LM-V405UA that is now on Google Fi?

TL;DR: USCC -> AT&T -> Google Fi -- Any way to get 4G/LTE on these carriers?
Hey all,
I haven't been very involved in the rooting/flashing/whatever scene since the Gingerbread-KitKat days, so my apologies for what might be a noob question, or if it even is the right question to ask.
A bit over a year ago, I switched from US Cellular to AT&T and brought my V40 with me. Despite some IMEI issues (was only 14 digits instead of 15, which messed with some online forms), I eventually managed to get it transferred. However, there was one big issue: I was only getting 3G/HSPA+ service. I imagine this would've been a deal breaker for most, but since I only really use my phone data for music streaming and Google Maps when I'm driving, it wasn't that big of a deal for me.
Then, recently, I switched to Google Fi to save money. I knew that the V40 didn't support the fancy carrier-switching stuff, but I didn't care as long as I had some sort of service. The same problem still persists, however: I only have 3G/HSPA+ service.
When I briefly looked into this last year, I remember seeing something about flashing some firmware that'd unlock the non-USCC LTE bands, but I'm not sure if this was valid (could be misremembering). Would flashing some sort of firmware on my phone allow me to have 4G again, and if so, what would I flash? The generic US unlocked firmware?
Also, not sure if this matters, but GSMArena and LG's own website both seem to state that the US Cellular's V40 model is the LM-V405UA0, but my model number according to Settings is LM-V405UA (no zero at the end). My phone worked fine on US Cellular, so I'm not sure what difference there is between the two models, if any.
edit:
Messing around with my phone settings, I was actually able to force a 4G LTE signal from T-Mobile (Google Fi's primary network iirc) under Settings > Network & internet > Mobile networks > System select and flipping the Network mode option between "Global" and "LTE/GSM/UMTS". Going from the latter to the former will switch me to 4G/LTE from 3G/HSPA+, but going in the opposite direction keeps me on 4G. To revert, I have to go further into the GSM/UMTS settings and select "UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ only" in the Network submode option.
Both the 3G and 4G options had about the same (slow) network speed of 2mbps down, and according to Signal Spy, the LTE was probably using band 4 (it had a question mark beside it, implying it wasn't very certain). I don't know if it's a band issue or a location issue, but since I'm on WiFi most of the time nowadays, I'm not that pressed about it... maybe I'll back things up and flash the US Unlocked firmware as a weekend project sometime.
