[Q] Renable Stock Messaging App - Moto X Q&A

I had disabled the stock messaging app on my Moto X with stock Android 4.4.2. So far, this has been working great, and I don't have two messaging apps (Hangouts and Messaging) in the apps list. However, last night, I updated to 4.4.3, and now I can't send text messages. Hangouts crashes every time I start typing a message. I realized it might be because I had disabled the stock messaging app and went to go and reenable it in the App settings. So I went to Settings -> Apps -> Disabled, and tapped on Messaging. But the enable button is greyed out. Is there any way to reenable the app without resetting the phone? I can't seem to find any other way searching online doesn't show anyone else with this problem.
Thanks for any help!

I was able to solve this by defrosting the app in titanium backup!
Edit: For anyone else that stumbles on this thread, the enable button for disabled apps is greyed out in 4.4.3. If you are not rooted, one way to renable apps is to go to Settings > Apps > Disabled > Reset app preferences (under the menu button in the top right).

Does the gear only work with the stock messaging app?

I was trying different text apps today and it appears after installing them I stopped getting text notifications on my gear. So I assume the gear requires the stock messaging app to receive the message son the gear?

Unfortunately, that is correct.
I have always used & loved Handcent, but I realized pretty quickly that using Handcent disables all text notifications on the watch

Yeah I tried textra again, but still can't get mms to work on it, so I went back to handcent. Thats a bummer, but the stock app has very little customization
Appears So
Yes, it appears you are correct. I use the Facebook Messanger app for SMS and it doesn't work. Really unfortunate.

It works happily alongside Tablet Talk. Tablet Talk and my Gear are both connected via bluetooth to my phone. Any time I get a text, it goes to both my Gear and my Tablet just fine.
Darn!!! Took the wind out my question. I use handcent as well it has so many nice functional customizations I cannot go to the default messaging. Could any form of rooting the device open the door up for this or is it the app?

I tried using Tablet Talk 1.75 and it keeps craching on the Gear. What version are you using??? Thanks.
Go SMS works
I have Go SMS working... Go SMS is controlling the vibrate (so I can use custom vibration patterns), and I have it controlling the LED (change color and blink rate). Also when I press the "show on device" button on the Gear, it goes straight to Go SMS, not the stock messaging.
This is what I did...
I uninstalled Go SMS (I'm not sure if this is necessary), and reinstalled.
In the Go SMS :
In the "Notification Settings":
Enable Notifications --> checked.
In the Defualt notification settings:
Vibrate --> checked.
Blink LED -- checked.
In the "Other setting" menu:
Disable other message notification -- Un-checked
In the stock messaging app:
Under "More" tab:
Notifications --> checked
Select ringtone -- > set to "silent"
Vibrate --> Un-checked
Preview message --> checked.
Open the Application manager in the settings of the phone:
Swipe over to the "ALL" tab, and scroll down until you find the "Messages" app. Un-check "show notifications" This will prevent double notifications in the panel.
This should do it. When I received a text, the first time I clicked "show on device", the option popped up on the phone to select the default program between Go SMS and stock messaging. I clicked Go SMS, and set to "Always". Now it opens up Go SMS everytime.
Hope this helps some of you!
but your method only give you notification that you receive message but doesn't show any message content right?
What I need is able to read text message on gear just like the stock messaging app is. I miss using textra.

It works with my version as well, 1.9.4 but I just had some issues getting it to work after the latest gear manager update. Basically had to switch it to wifi and back to bletooth before it reconnected and was working again.

Using my method, the stock messaging app is still pushing the notifications to the gear (not Go SMS), so they come up the same, and you can read the message content, no problem.

Use ATN Manager 1.2.2
That seems to work with most apps that send notifications.
using it with Chomp SMS and it works great.

I tried ATN and it didn't work for me at all. Posted in the thread for it, but no help as of yet.
I followed the instructions, installed the app, checked the box under security/notifications, selected the apps I wanted, most notably is textra. I sent myself several texts, as well as an email from my girlfriends phone and I did not get one notification on the watch

Problems with stock SMS notifications

I installed a messaging app called 8sms because I liked the theme of CM messaging. ( I am stock and unroofed so I couldn't install an inverted stock SMS app ) I noticed a problem with group messaging with 8sms so I switched back to stock. Now I don't receive notifications for any messages even though the setting for notifications is ticked in the messaging settings. I have tried clearing cache, data, restoring default settings and rebooted my phone. But to no avail, does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Did you uninstall the third party messaging app? I had that problem with GoSMS Pro. Notifications didn't work no matter what I did in settings and preferences with each app. It was not until I completely uninstalled Go that my notifications started working again. I've never experienced anything like this on any other android device I've used. No idea what causes this to happen.

Yes I have tried uninstalling 8sms and still had the same issues.

Fixed the problem, it was an issue with MMSC settings within 8sms. I would recommend 8sms to anyone who is unrooted and wants a dark themed stock sms app

Not receiving SMS/MMS on stock messaging app.

Hi, first of all thanks for the help you could bring me. My problem is that since yesterday night I'm not receiving any kind of sms or mms on my stock messaging app. Today I was trying to solve it but with no success. So I installed Go SMS Pro and to my surprise it worked, I started receiving SMS and mms, but still the stock messaging app is not alerting of upcoming sms even though it's receiving them (I think that they share a common folder and that's why if in go SMS pro it works it'll show on stock messaging app, so in theory stock is not receiving but just showing, am I right?).
For now I'm using SMS go pro, but I'd like to know why this happened. I read something about accessing a hidden testing menu (*#*#4636#*#*) to change the smsc but that menu is not available on my phone (any idea why?) tried the code above and tried using those apps that serve as a shortcut. The screen goes dark as it's trying to access the testing menu and returns to home screen, in other apps (like missing shortcuts) it shows as unavailable. I even edited the hiddenmenu file on efs/carrier from OFF to ON and still the testing menu doesn't appear. I'm using my phone right now with mobile data, wifi works well and so do phone calls, no problems at all.
I'd really appreciate any ideas that could help me. My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300 running 4.3 firmware, I updated from 4.1.2 a couple of days ago but didn't have any problems, I could receive sms normally. The problem happened suddenly yesterday night.

there is an option in Messaging app...Auto Retrieve - check if enabled....
if other app work with no problem it's just an app related problem..not something else...check in app setting maybe something is not enabled...
a factory reset would make it work for sure....but is too much...

Thanks for the answer. Yeah, I don't want to factory reset since I've just did it to upgrade to 4.3. About the app settings, I've just tried all the possible combinations. I'm just using GO SMS Pro for now but MMS aren't downloading. Sigh.

[Q] Google's Messenger Vs Messaging app

I just installed Messenger - Android Apps on Google Play on my Moto X (2013) Verizon Wireless (Android 4.4.4) and using "Titanium Backup" I "Froze" my native "Messaging" app (green icon).
Yet when someone texts me Messaging app (green icon) reappear from frozen, what am I doing wrong? How should I deal with it? It doesn't look like Messaging app (green icon) is active as I switched my "Default SMS app" to "Messenger", is there something else I need to "Freeze" as well?
Do you have the Google Messenger app set as the default SMS app?

Yes, I do. I didn't even know app can unfreeze itself too.
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
Are you sure you froze the right app? The green Messaging app is the stock standard android messaging app, not specific to Verizon. The Verizon Messaging app should be a different app, probably red icon.
Also why bother with TiBU to freeze you can just try disabling from settings. Settings -> Apps -> All -> Verizon Messages -> Disable
Alternatively when you get a text and Verizon Messaging app pops up click the android Recent Apps/Multitasking button, long press Verizon, select App Info, and Disable.
Only need TiBU if stock disable feature is unavailable.

Yes, I'm sure I froze right app, maybe I mislabeled it by saying it's Verizon when it's not, but I did freeze (multiple times) a green icon app "Messaging" aka (Messaging 4.4.4-26 (SMS/MMS PREFS)".

... and that's exactly why I attempt to do it using "Titanium Backup" and unfortunately was not successful(
OK well yeah that was confusing because there is a completely different app called Verizon Messages (has some good ratings, you might wanna look into it).
Anyway, we agree you're talking about the stock messaging app. Unfortunately it seems the stock app is integral to the 4.4.4 system, which is probably why there's no disable button and why you can't freeze it either. And even if you did manage to freeze it, it's likely you can't receive messages at all using other apps.
The solution seems to be to simply turn off notifications from within the app: Messaging -> Settings
See here: http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/77712/sms-problem-on-moto-g-after-updating-android-4-4-4
If you're dead set on going all out war on the app you can try using a file explorer with root privilege, find the messaging app (it's System -> priv-app -> MMS) and try renaming it, but that would be a hollow victory as like before it would probably inhibit other apps ability to receive SMS. so just turn off notifications.

Messenger is just a wrapper or fancier interface to the stock MMS app. If you physically remove MMS.apk (or sometimes messaging.apk) from /system/priv-app, then Messenger won't work at all.
You have to have the stock mms app on your system for Messenger to work (at least on 4.4.x)

Thanks, you've explained what i wanted to know in simple terms. as i did delete these apk and reboot and every sms messaging app crashed when i tried to launch them.

OEM Messaging won't stop notifications

I've turned off notifications for the app as I changed to Google Messenger which I like better and is faster.
But I have not been able to uninstall the OEM Messaging and the alerts are still received and never go away.
The only fix I have found is making it the default, removing the alert and then making the Google the default again.
Any one have a fix for this endless alert?
If you are rooted you can "freeze" Messaging with an app like Titanium Backup. It may also be possible to disable the app from the System Apps menu.
Darn the Luck ! ! ! No Titanium and it won't disable in sys apps.
