[Q] Overclock/under clock? - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just rooted yesterday using towel root. So happy that's finally out!
I'm coming from a galaxy s2 and I remember the rims used to have all these options that don't seem to be available for the note 3 rims. ..is that because of the boot loader lock?
Will the note 3 ever have features like overclock/under clock, status bar customization, long press/short press custom commands for menu and back buttons?
It seems like the roms for the s2 offer so many more options...at the same time it seems like the note 3 could/should have more just with the s-pen...is this all wishful thinking?

Anything that requires a custom kernel cant be done on the Att Note 3, at this point in time. And yes, it is because of the locked bootloader.
So no overclocking/underclocking, but the other 2 can be done with the help of root applications.

New Note 3 and New Gear (Advice needed please)

So.... my contract upgrade and Valentines Day fell right on top of each other and my wonderful woman made a new Note 3 and Gear ($150 deal at Best Buy) happen for me (ain't she the best?).
Could someone advise me to the advantages and or disadvantages of not rooting the Note while still rooting and modding the Gear? I am not new to the root/mod world having done so on previous phones (2 previous Evo 4Gs, 2 EvoLTEs, and a few others for friends and family). I basically only needed root for wifi tether and titanium backup but would rather not muck up my new devices with aftermarket roms unless there is distinct benefit in doing so. I do see the advantages of root/modding the gear but what do I lose by not root/modding the Note as well?
Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

Howzit man, congrats on the phone and Gear.
Well I am running stock note 3 and null_21 on the Gear.
I am leaving the note stock for now because dont really have the need or want to root at this stage....but
Rooting the gear definitely has major advantages over stock. Just makes the device so more useful and fun to use. I am enjoying it alot more after root. Read the root guides and watch some video of rooted gears and you will see how much better it becomes
Cheers
Thanks man. So I won't be missing out on any Gear functionality but not rooting the Note is what I'm assuming?

There's a lot of functionality that you're going to be missing out on both devices by not rooting. You don't necessarily need a custom ROM on the Note 3 either to get significantly more enjoyment out of it. Keep in mind that there are some rooting methods out there for the Note 3 that trip the KNOX warranty counter and others that don't, so if you root make sure to pay attention to that. Once you're rooted install Xposed framework and grab some modules like Wanam, Tinted Status Bar, Disable Clear Defaults Dialog, and App Settings. Those are the 4 I use and they are glorious. As for the Gear I'm currently working on rooting/installing a custom ROM on it because I want Google Now, which apparently requires Bluetooth Tethering to be enabled from what I can tell.
If you're not comfortable with doing this just yet give it a few months, you'll likely get the itch to tweak with more stuff and the Xposed/root thing should scratch that for a while. I got my Note 3 at launch and literally installed my first custom ROM yesterday, so it's possible to hold off
I know I'm missing out on both by not rooting. After all of the stuff I've read on tripping Knox I'm wary about rooting the Note. I did notice however that I do already BT tethering as an option on the stock Sprint Note rom. I don't know if it will be limited like the wifi tether would be though. After all of the bugs and glitches and battery life issues I had with my old EvoLTEs I was just resigned to keeping the Note stock and especially now that they have officially confirmed 4.4 coming it's way. I'm planning in holding off on the Note until a root method for 4.4 comes around.
As far as the Gear goes... I am itching to root this thing badly and see what this little doodad from hell can do. I just need to sit down and read all of the tutorials as I have always done so that I don't become forum fodder for asking questions that were already answered.
Long story long... am I going to give up and Gear functionality by not rooting the Note assuming bluetooth tethering functions on the stock note rom or is the Gear root functionality independent of whatever phone I have it attached to?

[Q] Galaxy S5 Active

So I just got the AT&T S5 Active, the best comparison I could find is on GSM Arena, and its the not exact chipset label, slightly different so I'm hesitant to try putting a rom on it.
Any dev's care to try and help me out to figure out if a S5 ROM will work, without actually trying to put one on, and bricking my phone?
I'm not sure how the process works but I'm sure there is a test or something I can run without bricking my phone on a first attempt to put on a rom.
Bump!
Anyone else on here have a S5 Active that would like to know the same?
I have an S5 Active as well and want to put a custom ROM too. I really like the Xtrestolite ROM.

Hello!!
I have the s5 active, our bootloaders are locked just like the S5 ATT/VZW. You can install safestrap and flash any ROM that will work on the ATT S5 only. Xposed framework works, safestrap works, black theme works " need a few files from the international variant for black dialer/incallui to work right. I left mine stock, rooted via towel root, de bloated all the junk, black themed and Xposed framework tweaks. I just find stuff in the S5 threads and if I like I try lol..
Good looking out man.

Now that I've been messing with this thing for a while, I'd be ok with just debloating this baby.

It's alright but I want to be able to install android l when it comes out not two three years down the road when Samsung gets to it. And be able to use Xposed and get my 8 shortcuts back on my lockscreen. The heart rate monitor and the ability to take a double picture and funny noises while unlocking are all cute features but I need functional not cute features. So am I going to have to return my device for a different brand?

Is there not an official sub-forum/thread anywhere for this phone? I don't have the phone yet but have been searching to find some sort of development to decide if I should buy one. I really like this phone but no development is a deal breaker for me. I know this phone isn't at the top of the popularity list and that's probably why. My interest peaked when towel root made its debut and I've been itching to buy one ever since.
Can anyone else confirm that most/all at&t s5 goodies also work for the s5 active?

These kind of goodies... Just wanted to hear other people's experiences with safestrap...s5 ROMs...etc
No such thing as s5 active roms supposedly. I haven't been keeping up with the forums for these anymore since this one is about it.
It's good enough of a phone without a rom. Battery life is good, runs great, I just want to debloat this thing of ATT/Samsung crap.
What every happened to the idea of android being open source?

A lot of questions being thrown around here.
There is no sub forum for the S5 Active, the request has been submitted but not approved.
You can flash ROMs after you root the phone by following this thread; S5 regular roms will work, just not the active button.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2794087
There is at least one specific S5 Active ROM

Android L, or whatever google choose to name any new update, Samsung and at&t take forever to update its phones and they are loaded with stuff I don't want or need. I want google edition on my phone.. Will that ever happen? Touchwiz is OK everyone has there own opinion but I only bought this very expensive device to put alternate Roms on it. Please let me know.. if I can't install slim ROM, google edition, or cm at any point in this devices life I will be returning it.

You better return it then. Our phones have a locked bootloader. Locked bootloader means no kernel which means no alternative roms that don't use the stock touchwiz kernel.

Learning to root again

Hello People!
I haven't rooted a phone since my HTC HD2 from 2009. Now I have had the Samsung Note 5 international version for a while which doesn't have samsung pay so I'm planning to root it now. I wanted to know whats the difference between custom roms and kernels. What is the best custom rom for the Note 5. Also I have been reading a lot about people having trouble because they bricked their device which is making be not want to root. Also I don't see that many custom roms for the Note 5 as I saw for the HTC HD2 back then. I'm looking for something that overlays on top of touchwiz because I like touchwiz but I want more functionality for example only stock apps work with split screen but I want every app working with split screen and same thing for pop-up view.
Thanks for the help guys and girls.

Stock vs rooted

Is it worth to root and install other roms breaking the warranty? What is better camera? Battery life, performance? Still no lineage os proper rom.. Thansk for answers. Im asking who is a flashaholic and tested many roms. Because i was. Had note3. quite new with note8

I used to root and flash everything I had as well. Started on the note 2, then 3 and 4. I came from the Note 4. I still haven't seen any real benefits of rooting the Note 8. My reasoning before was for free wifi hotspot. But I have that now on my stock 8.

The UI and customization is better on Roms. Being able to rid self of ads cool as well. Also being able to get rid of bloatware. But I can understand where your coming from.
I am kinda on same boat as you. Rooting and Roming is dien it seems. Wish it wasn't The Note 8 Sexy with Root or not Root thou

This is the first phone I have not rooted and have no intention to root.
Reasons why I generally root -
* Can block ads on the default (Chrome) browser. To work around, I use Firefox instead of Chrome. I also hear Samsung's own browser is good and also has adblocking, a lot of people swear by it, but I haven't yet tried it much. I'm eager to see how Google implements it in Q2 2018.
* Could turn screen upside down. This helps a lot if you use (wired) headsets or charger while using the phone in portrait mode while lying down. IMO this should be part of stock! But this alone is not worth it for me to root.
Beware you shouldn't root this phone just for experimenting.
WARNING Rooting breaks Knox, which disables a few things few things irreversibly. As of now, you won't be able to use Samsung Pay / Android Pay, Samsung Secure Files, even if you 'unroot'.
You should root if you want to try out new ROM's, and you are okay with loosing secure features like Android Pay / Samsung Pay forever.

FIXED!

EDIT::
My initial issue has been solved! I did some tinkering around with the APN settings and finally got my data to work outside of being on a phone call!! I still have issues flashing different firmwares and os's but that problem will be addressed later down the line.
If you make another Question thread about the Flash issues, you can drop a link here. I might be able to help
oh! thank you! i was initially trying to flash the unlocked u1 firmware onto a t-mobile based note 8 because of mobile data & hotspot issues but i was able to fix it. i'm still interested in root & trying to get a custom os installed. reminiscing on the days of dirty unicorns on my note 2

Cool. My Note 8 isn't my main smartphone anymore, but I didn't like putting Custom ROMs on there, because I found I was missing Samsung's Camera App and all their other cool features.
Kinda weird, I like the smoothness and simplicity of pure Vanilla Android, but all the cool little features of Samsung's OneUI. When I still used my Note 8, I just sticked with OneUI but rooted it for some additional freedom. (and for Custom Fonts and Systemwide Adblocking.. and YouTube Vanced. LOL)

Just keep in mind Samsung phones have a physical security chip (Knox).
If you unlock the bootloader, that security chip will permanently show that your warranty is void (0x1). You also won't be able to use Samsung Pay, Samsung's Secure Folder anymore, and some other things which don't come into my mind right now...
Samsung Health too, for whatever reason. However for that app there's a tweak you can do in a system file called build.prop... lol
So, there are disadvantages you must be aware of.
There's also Google SafetyNet, which detects an unlocked bootloader & root. And it's been a cat & mouse game to mask/avoid this detection of an unlocked BL & Root from Google SafetyNet, and it sucks. Google and the manufacturers try their hardest to disincentivize users from using their phone in the way they like to.
I don't want to scare you away from making these adventures. It's just a bit rough at the moment for the Android Modding Community and I'm afraid it'll only get more locked up, until Android phones sorta become like iPhones (in terms of freedom).
Yeah, playing around with root and different roms would be fun but i've pretty much settled on how i have things set up with good lock and all of those features. i can't seem to get videos to work with lock+ tho, that option seems to be greyed out.
