How it is possible to set my own melody as an alert for calendar events? It should be in the list of available calendars, but how to mark them to be able to get into the menu. It is not possible to get there without hardware keyboard/touchpad/trackball. Is there any solution?
I'm frustrated with the Samsung Galaxy S' calendar. My important appointments make a little low *blip* sound and that's about it. I tried to use Calendar Snooze, but I can't get it to work. Apparently you should be able to select snooze option from calendar, but no such option is available on my phone. Changing the sounds in the phone settings makes no difference. Any ultra mega hacker who knows how to take control over the calendar notifications?
Are the two of us the only ones needing this function?

Same problem on T-Mobile Vibrant
I just got a Vibrant (T-Mobile's Galaxy S) the other day and have the same problem. There is no way to change the calendar alert tone on this device. It doesn't even use the default notification tone. It uses its own, but cannot be changed. It seems like maybe an oversight in the program which may have been developed with the assumption that all android devices would have a trackball. I was able to change it on my old G1, but not on the Vibrant.
Hopefully with all the Galaxy S devices being released this week across many carriers here in the US, more people will complain and this will be fixed soon.
Custom Calender Alarm needed on Vibrant
I need to be able to set up a distinctive ring/alarm for my calendar events so I can tell by sound when I need to get to another appt.
The G1 had a excellent customizable calender reminder, and I could set more than one reminder for each event. I am used to relying on my phone to remind be when to "head out'. The Vibrant has failed miserably and I have already been late once. This is a HUGE oversight for such a great phone..
3rd party developers - PLEASE work on a customizable calendar multi-reminder system that integrates with the calendar program for the Vibrant.
For rooted phone, u can replace 22_on_time.ogg to other audio file u want (with same file name), 22_on_time.ogg is the audio played by calendar notification. This file located at /system/media/audio/notifications

What program can we use to delete and copy over the new file? My phones rooted (still feels funny to say that!) and I use astro as a file manager, but it comes up with an error trying to delete file. Is there something better to use on a rooted phone?
Edit: I'm trying android mate, and it's been given su permission, but while it says the file transfer has been successful the file still doesn't appear in the folder! I'm lost (nothing new).

1. something wrong with format of your .ogg
2. you cannot replace the ringtone in ringtones it needs to be in the notifications folder. I took the default samsung ogg and copied it to the notification folder and then renamed to 22_On_time.ogg (case sensitive) and it works fine and plays the tone very very loudly.. better than nothing anyway.. someone needs to write an app to change it and convert .mp3 to this..
the default samsung song is 40 or so seconds so much better then the few second default tone. and much louder.
I took a ringtone from the ringtones folder, renamed it 22_on_time.ogg and placed it into the notifications folder. After rebooting it did not play 22_on_time.ogg, it played a random file from my sd cards media folder.
However, I just noticed in your post you said it was case sensitive. That may be my problem. I will give it another shot.
*EDIT* The case of the file name was indeed my problem. I had a lower case O.

I know this is an old thread but I had this issue this evening and wanted to contribute what I had to do to fix it.
I had replaced the 22_On_time.ogg file with my own and the proper case sensitivity was adhered to, however, it would still play a random mp3 from the internal SD storage. I tried replacing it with the original and it didn't work (before I realized that a reboot was necessary, so that may be why it didn't work) and fought with it for a couple of hours this evening. In the end, it was fixed after I did the following things:
1) I opened the original OGG in a sound editing app named GoldWave, the audio config for the original was Vorbis, 44100KHz, 128Kbps. For some reason, GoldWave wouldn't let me save my OGG file to this configuration, closest I had was 120Kbps. I copied my audio, pasted it over the original audio and then did a Save-As and GoldWave allowed me to save the "original" to the original's native 128Kbps.
2) When I moved it to the /system/media/audio/notifications location, I first deleted the 22_On_time.ogg file that I'd placed in there from previous attempts so that there was no file whatsoever; rebooted the phone, then moved the ogg file to the proper location, rebooted again and it worked fine after that.
I have no idea what the actual fix was but just wanted to share my findings. Those were the last 2 steps I did before it worked so I'm attributing my success to one of those steps.
Additionally, the weirdest thing I observed was, prior to the steps that ultimately resolved the issue, if I had the phone hooked up via USB, debugging mode w/the SD cards mounted, it played the custom 22_On_time.ogg file. If any of those things was different it would keep playing the mp3 from my internal SD card. I have no idea why.
Hope this helps someone at some point down the road.
This is no longer an issue as you can change the calendar tone in Froyo in the calendar options.

Tried the Nudnik app but, come on Google every phone on the market has nagging calendar alert, i don`t see why i have to pay for an app to enable repeating alerts.
This is how I did it:
I have a rooted Galaxy S with Darky`s ROM, BTW great ROM.

I am using the SVHD v1.5.2 ROM on my HTC Inspire. All my notifications are in MP3 format. I downloaded Root Browser Lite from the Google app store. I just used that to copy MP3 files from my sd card to /system/media/audio/notifications folder. Then I rebooted my phone and now I can set them or calendar and any other system sound notification. Just remember the space on the system folder is limited to around 85MB, it may verify with your phone so just make sure you have enough space.

I navigated to that folder but I don't see 22_on_time.ogg. I see many others such as Adara.ogg, Aldebaran.ogg, ect.

I spent some time extracting ROMs and having a look at their sound files to make a compilation of my own. I also gathered a small list of sounds from freesound.org and added them in.
After countless hours of searching, choosing, reorganising, renaming and tagging, I put together most of the ringtones, alarms and notifications coming from Samsung, HTC, Motorola, LG, etc. I omitted quite a few, because I followed some strict rules to make the set as aesthetically pleasing as possible.
Some highlights regarding the content :
Most AOSP sounds up to KitKat
Most Samsung, Motorola, HTC and LG sounds
Fallout Level Up sound, Katniss whistle sound from Hunger Games, Bombay Sapphire advertisement music, etc...
The rules of selection were :
No licenced music
No lyrics
Audible sounds, focused on treble rather than bass (for phone speakers)
No high-pitched horrors (CyanogenMod, I'm looking at you)
What does this package do?
It removes all ringtones, notifications and alarms from your device
It replaces them with this rather large compilation, most likely containing the sound files that were previously erased
It sets the right permissions so that sounds are playable
It prevents duplicate sounds
All right, but technically speaking, what does this package do?
rm -rf /system/media/audio/ringtones /system/media/audio/alarms /system/media/audio/notifications
Package extracted to /system
chmod -R 644 /system/media/audio/ringtones /system/media/audio/alarms /system/media/audio/notifications
Why not just put those sounds in the SDCard?
Well, for one I like to keep my SDCard as clean as possible. Also, you'll end up with duplicates conflicting with the sounds already present in /system/media and I have no patience to weed them out systematically. Plus, I really like the idea of flashing a ROM, then flash this package right over it to replace the default sounds. As I said, most of the stock sounds from Google, HTC, Samsung et al. are in the package already.
Isn't this going to blow up my system partition?
I tried it on a Galaxy Gio with CM10 and /system still had several megabytes free. The package can be flashed on most devices, I believe, but exceptions can occur if you are the proud owner of a device with a very small system partition.
Screw your damn package, I don't have enough space and/or I am not about to root my phone to flash this stuff!
No problem, you can still download it and extract the Notifications, Alarms and Ringtones directories to your SDCard. The ringtones will be visible by your phone/tablet either instantly or upon the next media scan. Keep in mind it's very likely you'll get duplicates, and if it annoys you, you can always weed them out with a file explorer.

Yes, occasionally, when I hear something cool and fit to be used as a phone or tablet sound. I do this mostly for myself, but I thought I could share for those who don't like to spend time sorting out their notifications and ringtones...
Can I add stuff to the package?
Yes, definitely. Just use a decent program like 7zip to open the file, and add stuff to whichever directory in system/media. It will be treated by the script just like any other file.
Can I suggest new sounds?
Of course, I'd be happy to add anything that sounds cool. However, I will still veto horrible stuff - I know it's subjective, so if you really need it please see the question above.

This got me really excited as I have been trying to figure out a way to get my sounds into our ROM...
I edited the zip and added my ogg sounds and flashed and it didn't change anything?
So I tried flashing your zip as is and it also didn't change anything?? What am I doing wrong? Its flashing fine...but everything is still the same upon reboot...?
any help would be great as I want to figure out how to make this work...I noticed you have CWM in brackets in the OP...Is it not compatible with aosp based ROMs??

All right, I have redone the script using busybox instead of mounting proprietary partitions. Re-download and try it out, it worked well on my Galaxy Note 2.

Hey there. Thanks for the great sounds package. So can I just flash this on top of my current rom? I have a Nexus 5 running SlimKat 4.4.2. I wasn't sure if this is meant to be flashed right after a fresh rom install...Also, can I use TWRP Recovery instead of CWM? Thanks a lot!

I have a weird issue though. I've created about 15 notifications and 20 ringtones and I have them named. When I copy them into the zip they are still named properly, but when I open up the sound options in the rom, they show up as long numbers.... like a ringtone called Groove is showing as 1626253535446353500005353. lol. Do you have any idea why that would happen?? I know its something to do with my files. I edited the sounds in cool edit, exported as .mp3 and then converted them to .ogg ....the strangest thing is some of them stay named properly and some of them turn into the long numbers??
that's the last thing I need to figure out in order to make this perfect. The sounds still play fine...its just kind of annoying that the names don't show up properly...

Yes, flash it on top of anything fresh or not fresh. Keep in mind this is a replacement package, which means it will delete all of your ringtones, alarms and notifications! It will replace them with what's included in the package. As I said above, if you wish to add any custom files, just open the zip and put anything you want (.ogg or .mp3 only) in the appropriate directories.

Android will use file names as a last resort. Instead, it reads the file's ID3 Tag (for mp3) or Vorbis Comments (for ogg). All my files has been properly tagged. I suspect your files have bad comments.
Download this free program, mp3tag. It is extremely useful, and not just for ringtones. Put all of your custom files in the same directory and open that directory with mp3tag... I'm pretty sure that despite your clean file names, the tags are all messed up. :laugh:
As usual, keep me posted. And if you have any sound suggestions, I'm also all ears.

Hmmm...So what exactly do I have to do to tag them properly? Is it that part of the program where you stamp them? I tried renaming them and stamping them all and they are still showing up as huge numbers even though I removed the huge numbers and replaced them with the tone name? confused...lol...im brand new to these types of files....do I have to buy a tag?? I just don't understand how some of them are working and showing up fine and others aren't...when I edited them all in the same program and exported and converted them all the same way....

You know what, just attach the problematic file here and I'll have a look at what's wrong with it.
I think i figured it out already...I bought a sample pack that i used to make some of the sounds...I just edited them shorter and then then bounced them as wavs...its only files that used those sounds that aren't naming properly...think I'm just gonna scrap them and sample/edit my own instead...thx though

Awesome man! Thanks for this. I made my notification sound the chewy toy sound and it drives my black lab pup nuts! Every time she hears it she goes and finds her squeaky toy to make sure it's still there.

Two issues with my new Note 5.
1. When I copied my mp3 ringtone file to storage/sdcard0/ringtone it worked for one day, then failed. Tried to convert to wma, ogg, mp3, the program said, "unable to set as ringtone"
2. I copied the photos from the old phone to storage/sdcard0/dcim, but the new gallery can't find them. Any solution on this?
3. Actually mp3 files disappeared too.
5.1.1 no longer have the option to select where to store your photos, any work around, or should i use third camera and gallery app?

If you simply use a file exploer and go to Storage/DCIM you will have your photos in the correct place.
If you are using an apk like Root Explorer just go to SDCard/DCIM - (there is no SDCard0 that I know of. (unless you are trying to create a new folder there) Just put the new folder directly in SDCard directory and you should not have any issues. I have lots of personal photos and special ringtones I copied to the phone adn they all work fine. By the way, when I transfer audio files to any of my phones, it always asks me if I want to convert the file to a diffeent format - says if I don't it may not play correctly - I never do that - and they always work fine.

thanks Mocsab. Unfortunately, i tried, been using andriod phones for 4 years, this is the only time i felt this no longer an android product. The permission setting and other restriction make it an iOS duplicate.
Going back to my issues, it was still resolve.

I understand - I am not sure why are having the issues you described - they didn't happen for me - and personally, i think this is one of the best Android Phones I have ever used. Love it,
yeah, now that i have my data pretty much transferred, maybe i should do a full back up and reset to factory setting. Not able to change the ringtone i've using for 10 years really bother me.....
Ok, i did a factory reset and start from scratch. I was able to setup a custom ringtone by putting the file in the same ringtone directory, and copied the photos to the DCIM folder. It actually worked for 10 hours. 10 hours later, when i deleted a whatsapp images from the Gallery app, the entire photos collections as well as my ringtone were gone, ringtone back to default setting. I think this is a bug, if anyone experience this, please share your experience.

ok, read another forum and found a solution to change the ringtone file name to ring.mp3 and amusingly, the file show up on the list of ringtone and it works.
now the bug on why photos and music disappear still unsolved.

try to see if you have a .nomedia file on your storage card root directory.
what happen to my case was, i found a .nomedia in the storage card root "/sdcard/ .nomedia" so all medias were omitted.
Now that i have deleted the file, my mp3 player work correctly.
So I am trying to change my ringtone and notifications. First of all I don't want google Play music to find the music files when it is searching for files. Also I was wondering if there is a specific folder to place the files in. Because i normally just use a file explorer to choose it, but currently it is telling me its the wrong file type and its an mp3. I have the .nomedia file in the folder so that music apps wont load those files. I am wondering because by putting the files in the Ringtones folder they seem to load though the standard choosing method but all the other notifications dont seem to work that way if they are in the notification folder. Does it need to be media/Notifications?
I had the same question.. I found a YouTube video called setting custom notification sounds (just add /watch?v=q5K4zDbOJGo to the normal YouTube URL), and it explains how to do it.
Basically, you need a Media folder on your device, and a Notifications folder inside it. Once you've created them (if they don't exist) Just place your sound files in the Media/Notifications subfolder.
The Notifications folder can be right on the root, it does not have to be in the Media folder. That's where I copied my ringtones and notification sounds, and they show up as select-able now.
Using the "my files" app on the Sammy,
I copied whatever sounds i wanted to use from wherever they were direct to the notifications folder that's already in the device. I did not need to make any additional folders. T-Mobile variant.

I can see the mp3 but it keeps the standard ringtone.
For ringtones scroll to bottom of list, you will see add from phone, you can use the built in sound picker app or a compatible file explorer app then just navigate to relevant location
Edit: forgot to mention there's a size and length limitation, forgot exactly but something like under 1:30mins (maybe shorter) and 2mb if I recall

solution:
in note 8 the dir for custom notifications was changed from previously
internal-storage/media/notifications to internal-storage/notifications
just put any mp3 or other sound file to this dir and you will be able to find it in notification picker on any app

The only way to get back the file/folder structure would be to reset the phone to factory settings and not restore any backups - but this is a LOT of work as I have many apps and huge contacts database.
Any help on how to make a "refresh" without wiping all data would be greatly appreciated.

You won't be able to see the stock notifications, ringtones, & system UI without root. Some 3rd party file explorers may let you see them though. They are in system/media/audio.
If you create new folders in your storage & add stock sounds you may see duplicates in the list of sounds when you go to select them to assign them.
As for UI sounds & pen sounds, you can not change them them without root. And to change them you would have to replace the sound file with the one you want renamed with the same file name. I think there was an app that allowed you to change pen sounds for older Notes, not sure if it works on the Note 8 though.

That I do not know, I use Root Explorer but I am rooted, not sure if it shows without root. Maybe try ES File Explorer? I have that on my Amazon Fire TV that is not rooted & I can see some system folders/files but not the data folder.

I copied notifications over to my phone and they weren't immediately available for selection. After a restart I was able to select the newly installed notifications.
Just adding this info for the benefit of anyone who is trying to install new ringtones. If you don't see them right away try restarting your phone.
Different ringtones for default and messages
I cannot get the default notification sound to be different from my message notification sounds. If I change the message notification sound it automatically Changes the default notification sound and vice versa. Can these be different sounds?
Hello,so i have been trying tnsuccessfully to add custom ringtones to my contacts on my Samsung S20 FE. I have removed most stock Samsung apps that come installed on the phone and i replaced them with the Google apps. So i have Google contacts installed instead of the Samsung contacts app. When i try to set a ringtone to a certain contact,i am not given any option to add anything beside the factory tones installed on the phone.
There is no option to add a music file at all. Does anyone know how i can work around this to set specific ringtones for each of my contacts please? I am at a loss now and dont know how to get this sorted. My phone is not rooted at all so please can someone help me sort this?
U have to make in Internal storage a Ringtones folder and put there whatever tunes u like. Than u should be able to customize your contacts ringtones with these tunes.

Hi @ToothFairy' i actually did do that already and still i am unable to select anything other than the Samsung pre-installed tones when wanting to add to a contact
Install a file explorer (like ES File Explorer or Solid Explorer) and, after taping Set ringtone (first upper right 3dots on contact in question), choose that file explorer and, with it, the tune u desire.

Gave it a try,unfortunately still no luck. It does'nt give an option to use a file manager. Seems like the Samsung default settings are somehow preventing the Google Contacts app from allowing custom ringtones at all.
That's strange!!! It's working for me! Either with one of those two file explorers mentioned before.
Before choosing ringtone, have you tried to open that new fresh installed file explorer and "play" with it? It needs permissions to read/write on system and/or sd card. Can you see, in file explorer, the folder created i.e. "Ringtones"?
Which file manager are you using? I have file manager + installed and still nothing as you can see in the screenshots ive added
@ToothFairy' it seems i managed to find a way to get it working in the end. So what i had to do was select each ringtone first as the ringtone for my phone. That then adds the tones to the list and then when i go to the Google Contacts app and tap on ringtone,the ringtone i want to add for that person is there already and it allows me then to add it.

On attached screenshots i used Solid Explorer.
1. tap on right 3 dots and choose Set ringtone
2. tap on opened options (in my case i used Solid Explorer)
3. select Ringtones folder that you made on Main storage or SD Card
4. choose the desired ringtone.
It's the same with ES File Explorer.

Thanks for all yottr help,i appreciate it. Now its on to my next dilemma. Figuring which system and bloat apps i can get removed with ADB. Done the basics like phone,contacts,messages etc already and replaced with the Google apps. Stuff like Bixby etc that i dont use,i want to get off too. Just not sure which i can and cant

Sorry, don't get me wrong, but I think it's a waste of time and, besides that, it looks like u're not so much of a tech savy and, for that reason, u might brick your phone or whatever.
This goes for that Samsung apps replaced with ones from Google, too! Why did you do that? What have u earned by doing this?
It tooked 3 damn days to figure it out how to assign a ringtone to a contact!
Sure, I disabled some of the apps that I know I'll never use. But from this to using adb and messing with my phone without knowing what I'm doing it's a long road.
Again, don't take it personally but I just don't understand.
