I'm surprised the Tab S doesn't play 4K files natively - Galaxy Tab S General

Greetings all,
I played around with this tablet yesterday evening at the BB in Burbank CA. Very nice tablet, great design and of course the screen is to die for. With the venture into 4K, I want my next tablet to be able to handle 4K files natively with hardware decoding. I currently have the Sony Xperia Z tablet.
The Tablet S has the same processor as my Note 3 so there must be something in the code that doesn't allow for 4K playback (I transferred two 4K clips via Wi-Fi Direct to the table; one shot from the Note 3 and one from the Sony FDR-AX100 4K camcoder).
There was a post on most of the major phone sites that said Samsung was demoing a 4K panel in a 10" form factor tablet, with a possible winter release. I'm all over that!
Cheers.

Yeah, I also can't wait for smartwatches that can play 4K video.
Oh wait, no point.

4k on tablets will be very expensive, one they do arrive. But the video quality on such a small screen will not offset the price. It's not going to knock us out of the water. Just like you can't tell the difference in resolution, on small television sets, above 720p

Don't be a douche! I was sharing information that I discovered on a new product, if you didn't like the news, then you shouldn't have commented on it!
I have a 4K TV, 4K camcorder and my Note 3 records AND PLAYS 4K so there's a point for me and anyone else with a positive interest in newer tech.

Sure enough, it won't play them. I also downloaded an LG demo clip from You Tube (2300p !?!) and it refused to play as well. The Tab S recognized the file and correctly displayed the information but no go. Perhaps a firmware update can fix that. The demo Samsung supplies with the tablet is 1600p.

Wouldn't you need something like the Snapdragon 805 for 4k playback?
This is one of reasons I'm not that keen on the Tab S - the CPU spec is not that appropriate for the screen size

Why would you want to play a 4k video file on a 2k screen?

Because I can record it on my note 3, so of course I want to play it on my 2k display since I can't shoot 2k video.
Otherwise I have to watch it at 1080p on my tiny phone screen.
Why do so many people when they read a question immediately have to ask "why do you want to do that" or "don't do that it's stupid".

Lack of real-life experiences and not yet imagining the possibilities. I can understand the "why" question if it is followed by some comment that reveals a genuine interest in seeking knowledge.

The only reason I asked is because the tablet screen is only 2k and 4k won't look any better, but I now understand your dilemma of not being able to record 2k video on your phone.

Youtube now supports 4K video. Is there a way to play these from the native youtube app on this tablet?

The way I do it is download tubemate and it allows you to download YouTube video from 240p all the way up to 4k

4K Android Video Player
Try this app. It is expensive though. It is a player that plays the H265 codec.
Search for the Hoid P HEVC H265 Video Player.

You sure you have the Exynos version of the Note 3?
http://nerdict.com/enable-60fps-fullhd-video-recording-exynos-samsung-galaxy-note-3/
The main differences between the 2 versions are clock speeds and number of core. But there is one thing the Snapdragon version is capable of. It can record videos at 4k resolution (3840 pixels × 2160 lines) at 30FPS (Frames per Second), while The Exynos version can only record upto FullHD 1080p resolution (1920 pixels x 1080 lines).

The Hoid player stutters over the entire video on a 4K sample I took on a S5, For something of that price it performs similarly to MX player which also stutters.

I wad slighyly dissapointed as well it doesn't natively support 4k.
Since this is the only uhd device i own atm, i can just convert 4k to 2k.
But i do understand why you would want it.

it just missing the codecs required... wth samsung... codec also dont want to put on such a nice tab... since it can play the audio and logcat says it missing codec...

I am having same query. I hope Samsung will provide codec to support 4k playback in next firmware update.

Mx player pro reverts to software mode for 4k video. Hopefully there will be a hardware codec soon.

Try Android Video Player.
Works for me with most 4k videos, although it still stutters a lot with some of them.
I'm uploading two 4k videos downloaded from youtube
(viewing directly from youtube you get only 1080p)

Edit: 4k plays with software decoding, so I really don't understand why 'cool tool' tells me cpu is at 90-95% but @ 1000-1300mhz (not 1900!) and still video stutters..
shouldn't cpu be at maximum mhz when video decoding requires it?

[Q] is 720p video possible?

i think someone talked about this before but i can't find the thread in searches. is it completely impossible to get 720p video out of the milestone?
likely possible, just depends on how many frames you would like per second...
The camera seems to be high enough quality to capture the pixels you require but the phone may not be able to process/compress the video stream, given the frame rate you may desire.
I'm not totally sure, but I imagine that's going to be the overall consensus.
Cannot be done.
I believe the phone itself couldn't keep up.
No enough hardware for 720p on milestone

is this true?
how would u go about enabling 720p video recording?
that would be awesome!
i have already rooted and overclocked to 900mhz
I don't know if is it possible since we can't even play 720p .mkv videos, which I believe needs less cpu/ram power than recording 720p videos in high frame rate.
Furthermore, Milestone's camera isn't that good at all, why you would want to record a 720p video with a bad camera sensor?
with camera.apk change this is possible?
Playing 720p files is perfectly possible, but recording, hmm maybe at 24 or less FPS so why bother I prefer D1 at 24+ FPS, than laggy 720p,
It should be 720p video recording min requirements are 30 fps rate. Nexus one at best have 25fps. Our phone runs from 30 without root even motorola has specs sheet.. I think it was Verizon who told Motorola not to add 720P video recording. Just to make users upgrade to Droid Incredible and Droid x . In the Froyo update to Droid Last Summer. Milestone will get 720 p video recording in the new update 2.2 os in Europe. You can always talk to Matt from Motorola to verified my statement.

Hi cry3200, could you tell me how do you play 720p .mkv videos??
It's the only thing I wish my Milestone could do and can't get it done. My videos don't play flawlessly whatever video-player/settings I've tried.
I only get 720p+ videos and I would love to play them in my Milestone without having to encode them in lower quality...
Hi there,
first off all i don't need this feature on my phone...
It doesn't make sense to me if the video resolution is higher than the display resolution.
Anyway, no doubt it is quite interesting thing from the technical point of view.
At least some things should be fulfilled:
- hardware support for 720p
- enough bandwitdh on the memory subsystem
- application to handle HD video files
So i took a look into the processors datasheet:
Code:
· XGA - 1024 ´ 768 VESA timings at 60 fps (pixel clock = 63.5 MHz)
· WXGA - 1280 ´ 800 VESA timings at 59.91 fps (pixel clock = 71 MHz)
· SXGA+ - 1400 ´ 1050 direct drive of LCD with minimal blanking at 50 fps (pixel clock = 75
MHz)
· HD 720p - 1280 ´ 720 CEA 861-D timings at 60 fps (pixel clock = 74.25 MHz)
Looks like hardware would basically supporting this.
From my point of view the rest of hardware should be powerful enough to handle it as well (at least it is a SoC with PoP memory).
There's also a high speed connection to the display.
Last but not least the CPU is very similar too the one used on beagleboard.
AFAIK you may play HD on this hardware.
IMHO there might be some trouble on the milestone because of the resolution missmatch.
Please correct me if i'm wrong!

scholbert

Just use VPlayer, set the quality in options to Speed or High Quality, and experiment with the buffer for different container types, MKV files should not exceed your card speed I use a class 10 card but the stock is a class 2, but usually I use MP4 720p files that I encode from MKV 1080p, I encode on the GPU so by the time I drink a coffe and smoke a cigarette its almost encoded, original MKV 720p has some audio/video sync issues with VPlayer so I dont use them, but if you overclock to 1.2 or 1.25GHz the sync problems are gone, I dont really remember a bit rate to tell you for encoding, but try with 2000-3000kb/s and see if it works I usually use between 3000-4000kb/s with my card
Just experiment,
EDIT: Forgot to mention, not all of the movies encoded play flawlessly but I'd say that 90 percent of them work, but keep in mind you need to overclock to 1GHz minimum so if you don't want to do that it wont work, and use FroyoMod cause its the fastest and most stable rom available, Gingerbread has problems with VPlayer it just crashes; but the problem is VPlayer itself
Thank you for your answer.
- The only reason i wanted this to work out-of-the-box is to not have to encode, etc.. Just copy the files in SD Card and press Play..
- I am always in 1.1GHz, I will try 1.2GHz..
- I encoded a couple of 720p .mkv files in MP4 with excellent (same I think..) quality with Handbrake and they played absolutely fine in Milestone. I just want to avoid this encoding process.
I will follow your advice and see what happens. First of all I guess I have to change the stock mSD with one faster.
Thanks for all the replies regarding this. I just figured that since the camera sensor has the pixels it should be able to fire out the extra res. I'm not concerned with the screen mismatch as the videos don't get played back on device, they get put on my computer and youtibe, both of which will benefit from the extra pixels.

[Q] Video watching screen resolution

What's the optimum size resolution for watching videos on Xperia X8
What I mean is that I convert my HD videos into a 320x240 resolution to view it on my phone. I convert because my stock video app does not let me play those "big screened" videos. But both the audio and video quality decreases considerably.
I don't wish to use any 3rd party app to watch those HD videos , rather watch them on stock app (Converting into small resolution saves me disk space as well )
What screen resolution should I use to watch good video quality on my X8 ??
Also , any tip to improve audio quality ?
Specs :
Xperia X8
GingerDx V021
Stock Kernel
you can try on 480*320 resolution at bit rate of 1082(around) and 25frames/second and in audio 93kbps bit rate and 48kHz sample rate.
hope this will help you....
P.S. - you are using a custom rom right? so why don;t use try something like MX Video Player? so far it seems to be a good player on stock 2.1 for me. (just sharing my experience mate )
I watch mp4 videos at resolution 640x360 with the mx video player..
I try convert any blueray film with :
- video : H.264, 480*320, 25 fps, 900 kbps bit rate
- audio : aac, 44100 Hz, 2 channel, 128 kbps bit rate
smooth and clear playing in my x8..
try wondershare video converter.. you can googling it.. cheers..

960 FPS video recording?

According to this:
http://hispeedcams.com/lenovo-zuk-z2-pro-will-have-960fps-video-confirmed/
ZUK Z2 Pro should be capable of recording video at 960 FPS.
It is probably achieved through interpolation or something, or not at all (see Mediatek and their "[email protected] FPS").
Anyway, when you guys get hands on ZUK Z2 Pro, share your impressions and what the camera is really capable of.

Yeah it is on official site, there is 960 fps but unfortunately resolution is not mentioned.
Something is written in chinese forum that 960fps is not supported yet because there is no ZUI 2.0 yet.
So we will have to wait a little for a review.
hello everybody, as a student very intersted i made a little calcul. The snapdragon 820 is able to encode 4k video at 30fps, ie 8.29 Mega pixel at 30fps. So the sd 820 encode 248 Mpixels per seconds. So at 960fps, it means that you get about an image of 0.25 Mpixel, which is roughly a 480*640 pic. Not bad. However if some Mediatek CPU encode at 1080p 480 fps, and if the sd820 is considered better, then he can encode more than 2.09*480 Mpixel per seconds, which match 720p at 960fps. hoping for some other resolution/fps solutions from ZUI 2.0. But if there is no breaktrough for the camera then 960fps is impossible to reach( this far this speed is only achieved by pro cameras which cost thousands), meaning it's a false rumor launch by zuk for marketing aims. Wait for the reviews is my last advice. tchao
SD 801 was capable of [email protected] FPS already (h264).
SD820 is capable of 28 MPx/s (4K is 8MPx) , so theoretically, it is capable of much more than just what you mentioned. [email protected] FPS is only HEVC bottleneck.
https://www.qualcomm.com/media/documents/files/snapdragon-820-processor-product-brief.pdf
MTK claimed their SoC is capable of [email protected] with the use of a Sony's sensor which didn't even have that capability in it's datasheet.
And honestly, it's been a long time since they announced that and have you seen it ever come true?
The only mobile camera sensor capable of very high FPS up to this moment was Toshiba's T4K82 with [email protected] FPS, [email protected] fps and [email protected]
http://www.androidauthority.com/toshiba-240fps-t4k82-sensor-596203/&ved=0ahUKEwjDx_zy4f3MAhUFORQKHXP1BisQFggcMAA&usg=AFQjCNHi7pL_vdS6wb7F9fnUwtST4ip4IA&sig2=nTEBpX31ZuZS2WzWgj5VAQ
But it never appeared in a phone (or any device really), guess it was not as good as they claimed it to be...
OmniVision's OV13870 is capable of up to [email protected] through cropping and binning. However I have a feeling that they are actually the only one to be honest and admit it is not REAL 1080p. Because every slow-motion recorded with a phone I saw was like of a lower resolution then the file captained to be of. (720p looked like 360p, etc)
In my opinion, 960 FPS video recording is not possible with the mobile camera sensors which are currently at the market... Besides, iPhone always seems to come first with better slow-motion (they introduced 240FPS with a Sony sensor and nobody was able to compete woth that for more than half a year). They haven't even introduced 480FPS yet and somebody claims to have achieved 960 fps? I consoder that highly unlikely.
That is why I am looking for what comes out of ZUK Z2... If it really is a 'scam', then I say that they (ZUK and Lenovo) need to be punished...
Even if they come up with something ugly like frame interpolation.
First samples regarding the slow-motion video recording:
http://www.gizchina.com/2016/06/08/weekend-zuk-z2-pro/
So now it is confirmed - it does not record at 960 FPS. It does not even record at 240 FPS.
It records at only 120 FPS ! 720p is the resolution.. but honestly, it does not even look like 720p... more like 576p.
And the player allows you to set the playback speed... so for 960 FPS they basically play one frame 8 times....
Pretty disappointing...

[email protected] for NOKIA 7 Plus ? any app able to utilize this ?

According to SD660 page, the chipset is able to capture [email protected] (https://www.qualcomm.com/products/snapdragon-660-mobile-platform)
if NOKIA had unlocked this, it would have been able to make some really crisp slo-mo vids.

1080 60 FPS too much noisy

I tried to make a video in indoor light in 4K and 1080, 60 FPS, is there a reason why 4K is much less noisy? I did not think that resolution decides how much noise is there.
4K provides you with almost 4 times the resolution of 1080P thus you will most certainly see a difference in clarity.
In running a quick test, at 1080P on the default camera app, it captures the video at a bit rate of 20.0Mbits per second.
In contrast, at 4K @ 30FPS, it captures the video at 41.9Mbits per second.
So the capture size versus the bit rate is certainly going to play a deciding factor.
But there are other ways to achieve an optimal capture rate @ 1080P.
If Xiaomi gave us the ability to utilize the High Efficiency Video Coding (H.265) and dictate our own bitrate, you'd see better capture rates @1080P.
My only other suggestion would be to seek out a third-party camera application (GCAM perhaps?) and test further.

Is there an app that supports [email protected]? There is no point in recording videos [email protected] if there is 4K, but I like the idea of 60FPS.
