Boot animations
CUSTOM BOOT ANIMATION
I will take requests and make personnel boot animations for you just let me know what device you have and what you want pics are always helpful!
INSTRUCTIONS:
Step #1
You'll need a proper root browser. JRummy's Root Browser is a good pick, but you can use an alternative, too
Step #2
Once installed, go to the root folder and navigate through system > media. Once there, locate your current bootanimation.zip file.
Step #3
Long-press your current bootanimation.zip file, and click copy, as we'll want to have a backup just in case. Install it wherever convenient for you, we chose the root folder
Step #4
assuming that you already have a bootanimation.zip file that you want to replace your current animation with. Load it onto your phone (we had it in /sdcard/DCIM/), locate it, and again long-press it. Click move...
*Step #5
Once your new bootanimation.zip has been selected for moving, navigate back to system > media and paste it there. You'll have to overwrite your current animation zip, but that's fine since you have a backup in case something goes wrong. Go for it....
6.
For many of you, the previous step will be the last step. But, if for any reason you're still stuck with you old animation, you can try aligning the permissions of your newly-copied bootanimation.zip file with the permissions in the system/media folder. In our case, those were rwxr-xr-x. Just long-press your new bootanimation.zip file and click Permissions and change them until they fit. The logic behind these abbreviations goes like this: Owner - Group - Other. Read for 'r', Write for 'w', and Execute for 'x'. Save the changes and restart...

BootAnimation App ??

I like all these different Themes and Bootanimations.. Themes can be changed so easily thru the Settings.. But what about BootAnimations ??
Hopeing someone could make a bootanimation app where we just need to tell it what ZIP file we want for the bootanimation and where the bootanimation file is stored (data/local or system/media) and the app automatically changes the ZIP to bootanimation.zip and flashes it to the right directory...
Anyone wanna try it?
Sent from my HTC Dream using XDA App
Could it be done? Sure.
Why not use a file manager like andexplorer and just move the anim you want to your media folder if you want to change the anim?
3 steps really...
1. Open file manager
2. Copy anim.
3. Paste into media folder
If there was an app...
1. Open app
2. Select anim
3. Save settings
I don't see a real benefit to having an anim-app to do it.

Honeycomb Original Boot Animation

.
Hi there ppl, here I post you a link to a lil modified version of the original honeycomb rip boot animation that will work in our Arias fullscreen. Is just the dimensions changed in the desc.txt file but it'll save you sometime (as I had to go all the way to get how boot animation worked q: )
Here how it looks on a Nexus S: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrAoqgAzKyQ
If you're running CM7 it should be as simply as replacing the bootanimation.zip located in /data/local/ with this one (use root explorer or ES file explorer with root explorer option to navigate there). If you're running another ROM (and you dont have a bootanimation at /data/local/) take the second version and flash it in recovery. Not sure if that would work (havent tried) but it'll replace the animation found at /system/media/ folder as our Arias are s-on still.
Bare Version (just drop it in /data/local/)
Recovery Flasheable Version (replaces bootanimation found at /system/media/)
Neither way works breh
Edit: CM 7rc

There's really no science to have it, you just need to replace the bootanimation.zip in /data/local/ (that folder is hidden, you need root explorer to get in there, is in the phone memory, not the sdcard)

The original is in /system/media. Putting a bootanimation.zip in /data/local will supercede the original. It looks great on the aria. Thanks for the port.
It should work on any rooted phone, CM or not.
Also, there's no need to use root explorer. Just place bootanimation.zip on your sdcard root and open Terminal Emulator:
su
cp /sdcard/bootanimation.zip /data/local/
reboot
Click to collapse
Works like a charm.
Some of the versions floating around have white flashes between the loops - this one fixes that:

Thank you, that was very helpful. But it is a sick boot animation.

Perhaps I did it wrong, but the image appears rather pixelated to me during load up.
Awesome. Cheers!

The white flashes happens when there are foreign files inside the folder with the PNGs. In most case, a certain thumb.db hidden file I think we all have meet before

Thanks this is awesome. Took me a while to install it. Running liberated 2.2 based on the gratia release and none of the above methods worked. Finally replaced the boot file in system/customize/resource with this one and flashed the whole Rom thru recovery no wipes. Worked perfectly.

Wow, it looks great and the install was a piece of cake. I don't really spend much time watching the phone boot, but it's cool anyway.
awesome boot animation, but i'm curious about changing the boot image like the one in the video to like a picture in my gallery?
thanks for this!! worked like a charm.
can't get it working, running FR008.
HTC White-screen
I used Root Explorer to drop the file into the right folder, and when I rebooted the phone (multiple times), it got stuck at the HTC Screen.
Not worth the hassle...at least for something that lasts less than a minute.
Did it wow for a complete noob, if no one doesn't know how to do this shouldn't be rooted at all lol.
1. Get root explorer
2. Download his bare version and put it right on ur sd card so u can find it
3. Then go to phone on root explorer go out of where it first takes u via back button
4. Copy the bootanimation.zip
5. Then it'll have a option to paste hit back button it will take u back to where u were
6. Go to data/local/ and hit paste
7. Reboot and watch the awesome boot!

Better yet:
Copy the bootanimation.zip file to the ROM zip file (system/media folder) and THEN copy the ROM file to your device using your choice of file exchange.
The first thing I do with new ROMs is to delete the files I don't want or need (like the language files) and add those I want to have (e.g., the original CM7 email app that supports color-coding accounts).
You can also replace the ROMs bootanimation the same way.
I've significantly reduced the size of the ROM by getting rid of unnecessary ring tones (who needs 50 of them?), programs (e.g., ROM Manager), and wallpapers (e.g., smoke, other useless ones).
I can shave typically 5-7 MB off the size, which may not seem like a lot, but helps.

Temporary Fun (:

Seeing as some of the framework needs to be modded for a pre-rooted version of the 1.2 ROM I figured I would throw a little zip together with some stuff to play with. Its nothing special. Instructions:
1. Download the attached zip file to your computer and extract it onto your desktop, your documents, your "taxes 1993" folder, "kittens folder", or wherever you want for that matter.
NOTE: THIS IS NOT CWM FLASHABLE, DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT.
2. Download one of Nemith's ROMs from here.
3. Use winrar, archive manager or any other software you have that can open up zip files and open the rom you downloaded in step 2. Once thats open, click on "system", then "bin".
4. Go back to the files you downloaded and extracted in step 1 and you will see something called 'su' simply drag and drop the 'su' file into that "bin" folder you opened in step 3. It might take a minute to add it to the zip archive so be patient.
5. Once that is done, click the back button in winrar or whatever your using so you will now be in the "system" folder and no longer in /system/bin. You should see a folder called "app", click on it. Once thats open, drag and drop the apks that were included in the zip into there and give them a second to be added in.
6. Once that is done, your free to add any additional apks that you either downloaded or have backed up from a previous setup. (extract some from root explorer before flashing the update if you would like, then copy those on there.)
7. Now that you have all the apks you want added in there, close the zip, put it on your sdcard and flash that bad boy up.
Note: I included 2 launchers in there, VTL and ADW free. You can add both of them if you want and try them out or just pick one or the other. The apk that says something about gojimi is the VTL launcher. Also, feel free to add apps that require root since you have root access thanks to that business with su earlier. This doesnt have the market because BN is gay and their custom framework needs to be hacked, (thank you for the Nook though. ) also, youll need to select one of the custom launchers if you wanna use all of the apps you added. Superuser.apk and the nookcolor tools utility are included in the zip.
I believe this is not considered warez since all the files included are free, mods feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Once again, this doesnt have market, just a guide to adding apps and being able to use root.
Hit thanks if I helped you.

awesome!!!
so no market means no gapps either?
what about amazon appstore?
This is great. I already have it up and running with a bunch of other apks and a third party launcher using this same method, but the nook color tools and root will be helpful too (enabling the installation of "unknown apps" will be very good).

Amazon App store should work now that you mention it. Just download the apk online and put it in there. Hahah Im working on a full rooted rom but I figured Id give you all something easy to do for now.
do all apk have to into system app as i think amazon installs to data folder
You can sideload the Amazon app (or download it through the browser) after you do the steps in the OP. After it boots, open Nook Color Utils (tools?) and then uncheck and check the unknown apps option at the top. After that you should be able to download and install or sideload anything into data/app.

also titanium backup cant find root so this doesn't work. not sure what value su has
In the stock 1.2 zip thread here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050520&page=5
I suggested loading one of the one-click root apps into the ROM? Does that work?
I did try installing with z4root in system/apps and it didn't work. Though that may have been because it needs to run from data/app (maybe?). Don't know. Haven't tried it that way yet.

This is unbelievable! Thanks so much for this.
I use my nook for 70% reading + 30 % for emailing and web browsing.
I installed CM7 on emmc, but the battery sleep issue is killing (goes from 100 to 0% in a day) + I cannot use the stock Nook reading App. The Nook market app sucks compared to the stock nook app.
I was ideally looking for a solution which would allow me to use the stock nook reader + email + good web browser.
So can I sideload apps such as Dolphin HD browser and Any email client, using this method? Is there any limit to sideloading apps in the system/app folder? I do have a bunch of apk's that I would love to use.
Thanks in advance!

Yes you can do all of that! And I dot think you'll run into any problems unless you have like 600 Mbs of apps. Hahaha
How to flash this?
Please excuse the Noob questions.
How do I go about flashing this? Do I just insert the sd card and boot? Do I hold the n and power buttons? Some other way?
Also, will this all be wiped out if B&N force-upgrades over wifi?
Thanks in advance.

[GUIDE] Create your own Soft-MODs

USING DSIXDA's KITCHEN TO CREATE YOUR OWN SOFT-MODs
(THIS IS MY FIRST BIG TUTORIAL, SO PLEASE CO-OPERATE AND HELP ME MAKING THIS GUIDE BETTER!!)
DsiXDA has created an excellent Kitchen for 'cooking' custom ROMs. So first THANKS goes to DsiXDA.
READ THIS BEFORE PROCEEDING:
Click to collapse
For Kitchen to get working you need a Linux environment. My choice is go for Ubuntu 10.04 / 10.10 (I won't recommend 11.xx as Unity spoils the 'Cooking' experience). You should have a little bit of experience with Ubuntu. You can do it on Windows too. Install Ubuntu inside VirtualBox. I won't recommend using cygwin as it may reduce the performance.
Click to collapse
GIVE CREDITS TO THE ORIGINAL DEVELOPER
I. Setup the Kitchen:
Download DsiXDA's Kitchen at https://github.com/dsixda/Android-Kitchen/archives/master. Download the 0.179 version
Get an 'original' ROM (not soft-modded). The ROM that I used in this tutorial is Pebe's CyanogenMod 7
Get JDK. It's necessary. Execute the following command in Terminal:
sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jdk
When asked for password, enter the one which you use for logging in.
For 64-bit system, you need the ia32-libs ( sudo apt-get install ia32-libs )
Extract the contents of the dsiXDA's kitchen to a folder, say kitchen, in your Home folder (for convenience). Just inside the kitchen folder there should be the ./menu file
Open Terminal. Browse to your kitchen directory
cd ./kitchen
source ./menu
It should open up the Kitchen Menu
This is the basic setup of your Kitchen. Now move up to the next big step.
II. Actual ROM:
Copy the ROM (in my case, it is cm7_v2.zip (pebe's CM7)) and paste it in the original_update folder
Execute Kitchen (Step 5 from I). Select option '1. Setup working folder from ROM'. Another menu appears, hit ENTER. It'll show up the available ROMs list. It should display at least one ROM. In my case it was "(1) cm7_v2.zip". Enter selection number: 1. Hit ENTER. It'll prompt for changing the name, leave it, no need. Hit ENTER. It'll start extracting the ROM. In my case, it found the updater-script. It'll ask to convert the script into update-script. We want update-script at the moment, so just hit ENTER. It should say 'Finished setting the working folder!'. Hit ENTER. You'll be back to Menu.
The Menu shows various options like 'Adding Root permissions, installing busybox, etc'. You can play with them. As most of the ROMs have Root and Busybox installed, we don't need any of these features.
Now comes a bit advanced part. Select ADVANCED OPTIONS. There are various options like Deodex files, add Nano text editor, signing APKs, etc. I'll explain each of them:
Deodex: Merges ODEX and APK together. However, it's applicable for ODEXed ROMS (mostly Stock 2.1) only. Neither of GB and FroYo versions are ODEXed. So you can skip this step.
Add task killer tweak: It's a good alternative to Supercharger script. Only thing is, it isn't as versatile as Supercharger script. Leave this if you don't know anything about Task killer values like FOREGROUND APP, BACKGROUND APP, etc
Add data/app functionality: Suppose you've come across a situation that the system size reaches almost 150 MB (standard for GT540) and still you want to add some more apps, then this tweak is for you. It adds the /data/app folder. You can place apps in this folder. These apps will be directlty installed in the /data partition thus eliminating the 150MB limit.
Add Bash: Adds command-line completion in Terminal commands. Install if you want. Not needed.
Add Apps2SD: This is much primitive type of Apps2SD in which you have to create an ext partition on your SD card. Not recommended. Link2SD (app) is much better.
Add busybox run-parts: This tweak is most important one. I enables the startup scripts option, that means, scripts placed in /etc/init.d folder will get executed during the booting process. Recommended for Stock and AOSP ROMs only.
Add custom boot animation: If you want to add a custom boot animation to your ROM, then you need this. Select this option. It'll ask you to proceed, hit ENTER. A folder /data/local will be created inside the WORKING_xxxxxxx_xxxxxxx folder. Place your bootanimation.zip in that folder. Google some nice boot animations or if you want to create your own boot animations, Despotovski brothers had made a 'Boot Animation maker', check it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1234611
Rest all tweaks are not required for now
III. Something's Cooking!
There will be a folder named something like WORKING_xxxxx_xxxxxxxx in your kitchen folder. Open it up. It contains the actual system, boot.img file, data directory etc.
The best feature of DsiXDA is that you can easily 'browse' the system.
Open the system folder. Here you can see the apps, etc, lib, usr, etc folders.
Adding / Removing Apps: Open the apps folder. You'll see APKs of all the system apps. Try removing some apps. You can remove Dev tools, pre-installed CM themes or any other app. Add your own apps. Copy-paste your apps here. If their filenames have spaces in them (like Root Explorer.apk) remove these spaces (like RootExplorer.apk). You can also use the /data folder for adding more apps.
Adding some other stuff: The /etc folder has a lot of cool stuff too. The apns-conf.xml file contains the APNs. System can auto-detect the APN according to your carrier. I got an apns-conf.xml file which contains a huge list of APNs. Just replace the existing file.
Adding Fonts: Pick your favorite font (I like Ubuntu). Grab the .ttf file of that font. Open /fonts folder. Remove the existing DroidSans.ttf file. Copy-paste your font file in it and rename it to DroidSans.ttf.
IV. Final Steps:
Open the kitchen menu. Advanced Options → Sign all APKs
Back to main menu. '9. Check update-script for errors'.
'6. Zipalign all APKs'
'99. Build ROM'. If it shows warning regarding BOOT-EXTRACTED folder exists, select y (remove BOOT-EXTRACTED).
Select a build option → 1. Interactive Mode
Would you like to Zipalign → n (we already did that before)
It'll start making update.zip.
Add updater-script to your ROM → y (We want compatibility with ClockworkMod)
Proceed with the change → y
Sign your ROM → y
Change the name → n
Once you're back to main menu, select Exit (x)
Your ROM is located in OUTPUT_ZIP folder (It'll be a zip file)
Copy this zip file on your SD card. Reboot into Recovery. Select 'Install zip from SD card', select the ZIP file.
Reboot. See if everything works properly.
I KNOW THERE MIGHT BE ZILLIONS OF ERRORS IN THIS GUIDE. IF YOU'RE STUCK AT SOME POINT OR CANNOT UNDERSTAND SOMETHING, TELL ME. I'LL TRY TO MAKE THIS GUIDE MORE EASIER TO UNDERSTAND.
THIS IS A BASIC SOFT-MODDING GUIDE. I'M DOING SOME INVESTIGATION REGARDING THEMING AND BUILD.PROP TWEAKS. I'LL BE ADDING THESE SECTIONS LATER.
WOW nice work making this TUT!!
Nice Work!

We can these two files and copy it to the / system / app with Explorer with access to the root.
Original files in this folder can be copied to the memory card as a backup.
Our new files we give permission rw-r-r
Reboot system.
Tested on Android 4.1.2
