I just purchased my chromecast but i still have some questions.
I saw that a new update in a few weeks will have the full screen casting wich is why i just bought the device to cast everything my device shows.
I currently have a rooted galaxy s4, i see alot of questions about rooting the chromecast however are there any apps for a rooted galaxy s4 to have more benefits from the chromecast? Also does the usb port for power source always have to be plugged in or does it come with some sort of battery?

Can't really think of any benefit to a rooted device driving Chromecast as opposed to a non-rooted one. In some cases, a rooted device may have fewer options because some video apps don't like root. CinemaNow is an example, though it doesn't have Chromecast support (wish it did), and you can get around that using something like Root Cloak, though that has some drawbacks too.
As for power, Chromecast requires power - it has no battery, and because Chromecast automatically updates and it's never a good idea to lose power during a flash process, I recommend using wall power over a switched USB port (like most TV USB ports). But that's just my personal opinion - lots of people use TV switched USB ports just fine.

I thought perhaps by having a root you would have more options like castingthat don't have the cast function by default,
or send your entire screen to your chromecast.

Actually you have a point there... Koush's mirror app at least at first release, did require root. Also, mirror4cast requires root as well, so you are correct that root does give you some additional options.
The basic functionality, is mainly built into the Google Play Services (and for native screen mirroring it seems partly in the kernel), and that's not affected by root.

Either way, I apologize if this thread has been started elsewhere.
On to the problem, out of the box, I plugged my Bionic using a Motorola Mini-HDMI cable that I bought off Amazon into my Samsung Hi-Def TV. Instantly, I was greeted with the on-screen mirror-mode menu on the phone. It worked great, response was instantaneous and I was excited to start streaming video from my phone to the TV. Since then, I used Pete's root tool to root the Bionic and so far, the only thing I've done is move most of the bloat to the SD Card. Now, when I plug my phone into the mini-HDMI from my TV, the TV seems to detect the device--"No Signal"--but no menu shows up on my phone. Once unplugged, the TV gives--"Check Signal Cable". So it seems that the TV detects the device, but the phone doesn't send the signal.
Does HDMI mirroring deactivate after rooting? Is there a thread about this elsewhere? Is there an app I need to download to bring back the functionality?
Again, sorry if this is a repost. I might need to learn how to search better. Thanks, as always, for your help.
Rooting your phone does nothing to it at all. The only thing rooting does is lets you gain root access so you can do stuff. You might have moved some bloat that you were not supposed to move to your sd card. Even tooted with custom roms my mirror mode still works. Thats the reason there are no threads about your problem. I would try and move everything back from your sd card. There is a thread that tells you what you can safely freeze without any isues.

Bloatware and HDMI
So after moving all of my bloatware back to the phone, the HDMI mirroring functionality seems to be working again. Beware, the list I used to remove the bloatware in the first place was the list provided by Cory Streater, member from Android Central.
Any ideas as to what bloatware apps would effect the HDMI functionality?
p3driods toolbox has alot of stuff in it includind a debloat and rebloat option. you have to go online to teamblackhat.com and buy the app. it will not list your phone but when you download it it will list your phone. its only 2.99 and its well worth it
I just bought a brand new Chromecast from walmart last night, after doing a bit of research it came down to this or the firestick. Chromecast won me over I've been searching the forums up and down and trying every google query I could think of, I know its possible to turn the TV on with the Chromecast via CEC but I couldn't find any posts about turning the TV itself off with my phone. I'm currently running an s6 edge+ rooted with darthstalker v11 and the skyhigh kernel 7.1 (Forgive me, I don't recall the kernels version but 7.1 seems good!)
My phone unfortunately is like one of the two recent phones that doesn't come with an IR blaster, which would make my life that much easier lol. So my question is, is it possible yet to use CEC or something over my paired network to shut JUST the tv off? I also woke up to the tv on with chromecast running? Is this a common thing or did I just press a button in my sleep? I'm totally new to the world of chromecast so I want to cover what I know from reading the forums. Root doesn't look all THAT appealing so im happy with what i've got now.
My final question; what are some good apps to have on my (rooted) phone for the Chromecast? Note: My Chromecast device isn't rooted, so I'm limited there.
P.S. I plugged it in and set it all up and received the OTA update so im on the latest software, sucks I know....im that guy who would like to root it just for the sake of saying "Yeah I rooted that!"

The CEC in the CCast can turn the TV on and switch the input to the CCast input when you send a stream to the CCast.
It does not to my knowledge have the commands to shut off the tv....
And it isn't odd to have the CCast get a signal and switch on a TV or the input without you actually sending anything to it. Rare but I have seen that happen.
I've been searching the forum without much success, I want to install the Chromecast OS ( or in this case, HubCap) on a general cheap android tablet. Since Chromecast is similar in foundation, is this possible? I would like the tablet I get, like an 8" Chinese generic or anything, which already has wifi and a display, to be the display I can choose to cast to.
My further thoughts is that it makes a portable video frame I can use with my Google Home, but that's for my own further experimentation. I still haven't been able to find if HubCap on Chromecast still allows the Chromecast to be controllable from Google Home, though I would assume so.
Any directions I should look into? I would love it to be as easy as rooting the tablet device and installing a HubCap slip-streamed Chromecast package ( if any were to exist, even ) , but I have a feeling it's not that easy, despite Android seeming to be resilient as to the platform it is being installed on.

I believe I am looking for the same thing! I just recently upgraded to the galaxy s8. My old device is a rooted galaxy s6. I would like to use the galaxy s6 to hook up to my LG HDTV (model is LG 55LF6000, a "dumb" tv and is not wifi capable). I have been searching for "a way to turn the gs6 into a chromecast and/or Fire Tv". The hope is that I can then turn my "dumb" TV into a SmartTV and (hopefully) be able to utilize KODI as well as other smarttv type functions as if it were one to begin with.
As a side note, I have had every single samsung "galaxy s" phone; even before they were noted as such, starting with the samsung moment, the epic 4g touch, all the way up. I have rooted every single one of them, BUT I DO NOT want to root my Galaxy S8 (sungstratum mods do wonders without a need for root) bc Im in love with some of the knox features (secure folder, samsung pass etc) never having used any before due to using rooted devices.
I did find a few forums that appeared to mention ways to sort of do this, where the receiving device needed to be rooted (in my case the gs6) and the sending one did not need to be rooted (gs8). However, I cannot find them anymore, they were rather old (2015 I believe) and weren't descriptive enough or easy to follow in order to get the job done... So round-about-way of saying/asking... I think we are looking for the same thing, correct?

Sorry, this is not at all what I am looking for. I am looking to repurpose a tablet itself to be the device displaying the video, is if it were a tv/Chromecast single device combo. It would be a small screen, yes, but it is the best way I can describe its function.

I understand, and in a nutshell that is exactly what I would need to do with my galaxy s6. Repurpose it as a Chromecast , it could then play things on that screen or the big one it's attached to.. however, I guess mine requires a little extra.. as I believe you would just need this to get done what you need:

I've been using a 256GB Exynos Note 8 as my first ever Samsung Smartphone for almost a year now, and I've been really loving the extremely versatile featureset it packs. It has hands down been the most useful Smartphone I've ever had after over half a decade of jailbroken iPhones and just switching to Android on a OnePlus One back in 2014. So much so, I've literally been using it as a Pocket PC for most of my computing needs, relying less and less on my Surface Pro 2.
However, there has been one pet peve that just keeps getting in the way of me enjoying my Note 8 to the fullest; whenever I try to miracast Netflix running on my Note 8 to my Microsoft Wireless Display Adaptor connected to a big screen (be it in my living room, bed room, or a hotel room), I only get audio and subtitles, no video Everything else -- including presentations, games and YouTube -- stream smoothly and very reliably from my Note 8 to whatever big screen I want, way better than even my Surface Pro 2 (1st party hardware). However, I just can't get Netflix to stream over miracast from my Note 8. Oddly enough, it works from my Surface Pro 2 with the latest Netflix app from the Microsoft Store.
Any genius out there have some suggestions on how to get Netflix working over miracast? I don't want them chromecast as they require their own internet connection instead of simply functioning via WiFi direct. Thanks in advance.

The casting is something Samsung needs to fix its quite fiddly. If I'm casting to a TV I use Smart Things.
I think you should be running the app you're trying to cast from first. Then when you click the option it should recognise your MWDA.
I used to use my Surface Tablet to cast Netflix and it was a nuisance, so I gave up and plugged it directly into the TV and used a Bluetooth mouse.

Sorry for the very late feedback, for some reason never saw a notification in the XDA Labs app despite responses to my thread.
I just attempted this but all it does is still show a black screen with audio over Miracast, while the video appears on my Note 8's screen.

I tried it both at a camp/hotel and at home. Doesn't matter which TV I'm plugging it into, it's still the same end result; my Note 8 reliably connects over Miracast to it, but Netflix refuses to display.

Hmm, isn't that using Chromecast though? My Wireless Display Adapter doesn't show up when I attempt to add a device in SmartThings.

The problem might be the MWDA. I never used one, I used a 3rd party display port to HDMI cable when connecting my Surface to a TV.
I cast apps from my Note 8 to my TV using Smartthings app. Or if you click the button which says 'button order' for your notification shade, there should be one that says 'smart view' I have successfully cast Netflix on my phone to my TV this way.

The MWDA works perfect and reliably for ANYTHING else, besides Netflix. SmartThings is casting via Chromecast in your Smart TV, that's why it works with Netflix.

That's exactly how I cast from my Note 8's screen to the MWDA, again, it works reliably with everything else but Netflix. The difference is it's using the Miracast protocol in the case of my MWDA, whereas the one to your Smart TV is using the Chromecast protocol (SmartView supports both).
Anyone else have any suggestions on getting Netflix to work over Miracast?

I am asking if someone have some experience with AA Mirror (MirrorLink for not officially supported phones) on XZ1 Compact.
I am basically asking if someone have tried it, if it works or works reliable or not. Usage will be simple only for GPS navigation - Sygic. Nothing more.
Reason is that to get AA Mirror on XZ1 Compact i need to root and unlock bootloader on quite a new phone, that still have about 14 months of remaining warranty period. So I would like to know if its worth of it.
Any info will be appreciated!

I havent tried it, but since it needs low level USB access, I am sure it wont do anything, maybe not even install.
Problem is that MirrorLink support is really weak. Sony does not support it at all, and e. g. Samsung only on flagship models.
I still guess that I have to try it, not really appreciate it. I hoped that this forum section is more alive.
I have been using AA Mirror daily for the past 3 months. About one or two times a week the connection to Android auto is lost and I have to replug the phone in, or my car stops responding to touch response. This usually doesn't happen when I use regular AA apps. That's about the only issue I have and I haven't tried changing settings to fix it because it doesn't happen too often, everything works well enough for me to keep using it.
Edit: I'm actually using AAStream, a version that should fix some bugs

Ok, I just realized that this isn't actually MirrorLink. It's just outputs Android Auto, not MirrorLink. OP, you got my hopes up for nothing...
Anyway, my searching indicates that non-rooted AA Mirror kind of works for mirroring only. The touch input doesn't, so you have to do it via the phone screen.

I know that. As far as I searched, for full and true MirrorLink you need to have manufacturer support out of the box. No one actually figured how to implement this on other phones. I guess that it requires custom kernel module or something closed source.
AA Mirror or AA Stream is sort of solution for other phones, but it works as screen mirroring utility only (you have to control everything from phone, not from car). I really dont mind, especially for GPS I always set up destination or changing it while not driving. So basic screen mirror is enough.
I already installed AA Stream / AA mirror and it really requires root. Without it doesnt work, which I have expected.

Yes all on XZ1 compact. And no special steps, but have to add I'm on the LineageOS rom. Just never have been able to get Netflix working as they block screen output to another screen, but that's a different issue. It's not perfect, but it's the easiest thing I have been able to do after rooting my phone. I have way more issues with banking or McDonald's apps than with AA Stream Still worth it though. In fact so worth it I refused a free iPhone from work as I rather keep my compact for these 'features'
So I just got a car radio that supports mirroring over both USB debugging and MirrorLink and it works perfectly without root! Including touch input via the car's screen. The radio says MirrorLink ("P-Link"), but I assume it's doing it through USB debugging. Which makes sense, since that's the same way most Android remoting programs work on PC. I haven't tested the audio but I assume that works, too. It has a huge 7 inch screen and was pretty cheap, so it'll be perfect for navigation.

I am also considering LineageOS 16.0 RC6, because if I understand properly, that if you dont backup DRM keys you will loose official Camera and other functionalities after root.

But this will probably not work on stock car display unit (like original 7" Toyota system) which almost all supports MirrorLink only. I will try it You have some additional app for that? Or just checked Dev. options on and all OK?
No additional app. Just USB debugging enabled.
