32gb FAT32 SDcard to 64gb exFAT SDcard Problems - Galaxy Note II Accessories

Ok so i've been using the SanDisk Ultra 32GB MicroSDHC Class 10 sdcard in my note 2 and when i filled it up i then went out and bought the SanDisk Ultra 64GB MicroSDXC Class 10 UHS sdcard. I want to transfer everything thats on that 32gb card to my new 64gb and keep going. Obviously, ideally having about 32gb of free space when i put the 64gb card into my phone. I cant seem to get this to work right for some reason.
I took the filled up 32gb card out of my phone put it into the adapter it came with and then put that into the sd card reader thats built into my windows 8 laptop. Copied the entire card to my desktop and it turns out to be 37gb worth of data some how?? The 32gb card is using fat32 and the new 64gb card is using exfat...not sure if that matters in any of this? Then I copied that entire folder to the blank 64gb card and windows is telling me i only have 15gb of free space left on the card. The 64gb card seems to read in windows as only about 60gb btw. Where my extra 4gb? regardless...even 60gb minus the 37gb copied to the card should give me at LEAST 23gb....not 15gb. So not sure whats going on here??
THEN i formatted the 64gb card again using NTFS, added back all the copied files from my 32gb and it said i had about 20gb of space left. I suppose thats better but still not what im looking for and i read that i shouldnt really be using NTFS anyways. So then I tried formatting the card in my phone with TWRP and same thing happened as before, only showing 15gb of free space with the exfat format. I noticed in the windows format utility i can chose an Allocation Unit Size...I had left it at the default...not sure if I should be changing that to one of the larger numbers?
Anyway, I just want to transfer my 32gb card to the new 64 gb card and have about 32gb of free space on there....any help with this would be great, thanks!

It depends on a few things. First is the average size of the files to be stored and retrieved. Also the number of files to be stored and retrieved. A single file may be stored in several segments. The last segment will probably not be full, hence wasted space that cannot be allocated. Smaller segments would result in less wasted space, but more segments per file. Larger segments would yield less segments per file but more waste.
All the segments are tracked by the FAT (file allocation table). This index keeps track of all the segments on your storage device. A smaller allocation unit size (segment) would yield in a larger FAT. This will also slow down your read/write speeds. The reverse is also true.
*It has been awhile since I had studied this stuff so my FAT might be a little randomized.

I'm not sure what you go going on.
Couple of quick comments. Not possible to have more data on the card than it's capable of holding; ie 37GB of data on a 32GB card. You may have some compressed files of something, but the compressed files are still a certain size until uncompressed. So, something may have gotten messed up. It happens.
As for your new card having less than 64GB of data, that is normal and expected. There is always some space lost for file allocation tables and various other stuff needed for devices to connect to the card.
As for the new card, since it blank, best thing to do, format using your phone. It's the best place to do it. It will guarantee it'll be formatted in a way that the phone is guaranteed to read and write. And it doesn't take that long; five minutes at the most in my experience, and usually it's more around two. If your computer can read and see the formatted card, I would than just copy/cut the files over to the phone that way, and not use the card reader that came with it. It does take a lot more time, but other than corrupted files, it's always works.
If fact, I almost never use those card readers. When I get a new card or phone and need to transfer data, I just connect it the computer, transfer files over to the computer that way. Format the phone storage or new microSD card (in the phone), than transfer from the computer to the new phone or microSD. Other than a file here and there, no issues. And of those few files, it usually turns out the file got corrupted because I won't be able to open on the PC, phone, or anywhere else. And the problem files are found when transferring from the phone to the PC. The biggest knock on this method, it can be very time consuming, especially if there are bad files.
Other thoughts, I don't recall Android being a NTFS friendly. I thought it was just FAT or exFAT (I believe this is what it generally uses). FAT32 is the arguably the cross platform friendliest since Windows, OSX, Linus, and so forth and all read and write to it. It does have a 4GB file limitation, which depending on what you're using, can be a big problem, especially with video files. I don't recall exFAT file size limit, but it's more than 4GB.

Thanks so much for the info guys! For whatever weird reason it seems the exta gigs of data that transferred off the sdcard was actually files i had deleted a while back...not sure why they were still on there but my phone was reading them as deleted. Not sure why they would copy back to the computer though when i never even saw them to select.

[Q] Dead External SD Card?

This may just be a case of me being genuinely unlucky in my purchases but humour me anyway!
Like you lot I have an SGS and with all the recent mods regarding sound I like to use it as my mp3 player, so buying a micro sd card for additional storage was a must.
I had a spare 4gb class 2 card lying around so I've been using that for some months. Finally decided to upgrade to a more meaningful 16gb class 4 card.
Ordered one off Amazon through a seller. As soon as I put the card in the phone, it refused to recognise it but my PC, digital camera, old blackberry 9000 and n95 saw it just fine. So I formatted the card in the pc using the downloadable SD Card formatter as some googling suggested this might return the card to a working state. After that the phone saw a 16gb card, so I copied some music onto it, it worked for about 30 mins and then the card died totally. Upon reinserting it into the pc, windows only saw an 8mb card in RAW format and nothing I've done since has recovered the card. Card was dead.
Anyway I contacted the seller who posted me a nice shiny Kingson 16gb class 6 card right away.
New card arrived last night, appeared in the phone straight away as a 16gb card. Great start.
Plugged the phone in, started copying some music on it - the write speed was incredibly slow. I mean really slow, 100mb of mp3s was taking the best part of 3 minutes. Popped the card in the PC, same problem.
I find that I can actually write data to the card till its full (albeit slowly) but once you've written more than around 4gb of data, the files start to vanish.
I know it sounds incredibly stupid but anything written after around the 4gb mark just doesn't appear when I plug it into the phone or the PC. The card claims it is full, but only 4gb of data is visible, let alone accessible. I've done the usual formatting of the card and changing card readers etc etc but the result is the same and this is starting to grow boring.
So, question. Am I just incredibly unlucky in my purchases or is my SGS killing cards? Because I'm quite weary of buying yet another card now.
Funny enough my old 4gb card still works just fine like it has for years.
I know you'll have a FAT (file allocation table) that usually reserves a predetermined amount of space on the card for file locations. But your memory card should not be able to accept more than whats available and should be displayed correctly no matter what your using. IE pc or phone. Kingston are fairly reputable, but is your dealer reputable. There are a lot of counterfeits out there. I don't believe the phone itself is damaging these cards. Since your stating your old trusty card still works like a champ

[Q] 64GB HD Card on Lollipop ROM - What format should I use?

I have been trying to find the best method for getting a 64gb SD card to work with my phone, and it has not been all that successful. I have formatted in NTFS, exFat and FAT32, all with varying degrees of success. Either copying files over leads to data corruption, or I cannot write from and to the SD card when it is being accessed by my device. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am currently running CMPrime ROM v1.1Beta with the included kernel. I have also tried using it with Unnamed Kernel.
I just received my Samsung 64gb EVO MicroSDXC UHS-I card this morning. I popped it into my phone and it asked me to format before I could use it. So I clicked yes and then after that it just worked.
I am not sure what would be different for a custom rom as IU use the offical Lollipop 5.0.2. It shouldn't be much different though.
FAT32 is your best bet. I have a 64GB Lexar card formatted in FAT32 working fine with Titan Prime.
It's possible that something is wrong with the card. Does the card work fine in other devices? What brand is it?
Could also be a hardware issue with your phone, have you tried other cards?
Use fat32 no other file system

I bought a no-name SD card from a Chinese manufacturer, because I figured "why not." I know quality of SD cards vary across manufacturers, but since it's an established technology and relatively easy to make, I thought it'd be worth a chance. Some quick Google-Fu showed that it is not a completely isolated issue related to SD failure.
I have a 32gb card that I'm using without any issues. I'm asking specifically about 64gb, because 32gb seems to be the max size for external storage.

I usually give ROM info, because it is common courtesy for dev communities. I have read that formatting through the device only accomplishes a rather crude job, and that file structures can be unsound. I know FAT32 is the standard, but it is an old format that has size limitations.

I believe you should be able to use NTFS or exFAT with the kernal you're running, though I don't know if there might be any bugs or compatibility issues with some cards. If even FAT32 isn't working correctly, my suspicion if that you have a bad MicroSD card. As a rule of thumb I always buy brand name from reputable sources when it comes to microsd cards. I know those cheap ones look tempting, but the quality issues with them are legit, so it's a real crapshoot.
And yes, you'll run into the same old limitations with FAT32 in terms of file size, etc., but I use it anyway since it has the widest support across devices and I sometimes swap my cards.

I am inclined to call this a bad SD card, but I want to rule out all other possible reasons. Null Hypothesis and all that.
In terms of performance of FAT32, it is registered by the ROM, and it is visible in recovery. But my music files are not readable in Google Music or any other music app. I've tried moving them to /sdcard1/media/music and it is still balls. This kind of behavior leads me to think that it is an actual formatting issue.

Max file size for fat32 is 4GB-1byte. Should be not a problem unless you plan on putting e.g. large hd-movies on the card. Speed isn't affected by the partition type (actually it is, but it's negligible in this case). No-name sdcards are often manufactured with low quality check standards. They sell cards that would normaly get tossed into trash. I use a 64gb card with no problem whatsoever. On windows use http://www.easeus.com/partition-manager/ because windows will only allow up to 32gb. On linux use gparted.

I occasionally save audio recording/mixing sessions as OMF files, which can end up being really large, particularly if I export at 64-bit sampling and 96khz frequency. So the 4gb limit can be a bit annoying to deal with, in that regard.
I wasn't aware about the cheaper SDcards potentially being of b or failed stock. I'll probably buy a new card under a trusted brand, and report back.

Acquired a Sandisk MicroSDXC Ultra UHS-1 64gb card. Tried using it in my android phone. I am able to load files onto the SD card as before, but I still experienced the same issues with Media Scanner failing to account for my music files on External SD. Worse yet, my Titanium Backup files became corrupted when trying to access them via the device. I did a Nandroid Backup and tried a clean install to rule out any potential conflicts with my ROM, only to find that the issues remained, and the Nandroid disappeared from the TWRP backup folder.
At this point, I'm starting to think that it's an issue with the phone itself. WHY CAN I NOT HAVE 64GB OF SPACE, MOTO G!!!?
I bought a sandisk 64gb card off amazon on black Friday, immediately put it in my phone and let the device format it.
Later, I put the SD card in my computer so I could create a 2nd partition for ext4 storage.
The phone had formatted the card Fat32...has been working just fine since then.

When I try to mount the SD card in the phone, it does not register. It only works after I format to FAT32 using TWRP. So I will probably try that.
So 32gb in FAT32, then 32GB in Ext4, and leave back-ups/other files there?
64 card files wont all play
Hi I have a new moto g, I also put in a 64 sd card, while the music files seemed to play fine, video and other files the phone reads some of them not others, I put the same file internally and on the sd card and it reads the internal version of the file. I gather from this forum (though I may be wrong) I need format the sd card, I have no idea how to do that, any help would be appreciated.

My understanding is that, if you have a FAT32 SD Card, then larger files (4gb+) cannot be read. ExFAT and NFTS should solve this problem, but I am still dealing with issues of reliability with my card accessing my music files post-formatting.
Finally discovered the problem. I downloaded SD Insight from the Play Store, and I found that the SD cards I got off ebay were invalid (including the Sandisk SD Card). I picked up a PNY High Performance 64GB Micro Secure Digital Extended Capacity (microSDXC) Flash Media Card from a local computer store, and after formatting to FAT32, everything works.
Moral of the story: buy your **** from a store.
I'm currently using CM 14.1 20161225 with a 32 GB SD NTFS formatted and experiencing some weird problems with Camera/Gallery, Music, etc. when on the SD.
So before I go back to FAT32 on a 64 GB SD I now have I would like to ask if anyone can comfirm exFAT would be working fine on titan CM14.1 or LineageOS?

That's strange, i have no problems with mtp in win7, looks like win10 doesn't worth updating. Btw, i tried exFAT before and it strangely limited file size to 4 GB like in FAT32.

SD problem with 6.0

How come SD becomes xxxx-xxxx, and the number changes after changing SD card?
This can be a hassle to save files onto memory card.

that's normal with MM when you choose the SD Card as "Portable Storage",
MM Handles SD Card differently in this version of Android, there is 2 options when you insert your sd card which are :
1- Adoptable Storage
-Android 6.0 introduces the ability to adopt external storage media to act like internal storage. (YOU CAN'T REMOVE FROM DEVICE, SD Card becomes part of your device when this is selected) You can Read more about it here "Adopt. Storage"
2- Portable Storage
- This Options doesn't act like internal storage but as normal storage you can take your sdcard out without a problem and connected to you PC using a SD Card adapter.
as you can see in my attachment, i have the sd card as Portable Storage,

As mentioned by DrakenFX, this is the default behavior in Android 6.0+. If you don't want to deal with it, then the best option would be to use a larger capacity SD card to avoid having to switch it out. Personally, I can't use the Adoptable Storage option, since I change ROMs pretty often, and this would destroy my data when doing so. However, using a large capacity card, such as a 64GB, 128GB, or 200GB card, I can use only that one card to store my movies, music, and other large files.

i just thinking out of the box here, but if we create 2 Partitions of the same format in the sdcard will MM see this partitions as 2 different partitions as use 1 as portable storage and the other one as adoptable? or MM just deal with as just single one and convert/format the whole thing?....
i have to give it a try and see the results but right now to late for me and need to move 40gb from my card to do some testing

When you select Adoptable Storage, it will format the whole physical card to use for storage. Two partitions will only work for making it see two portable storage devices.

other words , Won't work then LoL :crying:
either way i guess i have a 8gb laying around will do the 4gb each partition and give it a shot
P.S. Sorry for been little off topic
Well, you could try setting your SDcards to the same volume # with VolumeID.
That's good, but not great idea... I have references to docs/sync jobs etc in apps that are path specific, which would all break simply by changing the sdcard.
I've had the htc m7/m8 before and the sd card is usually reference-able via /storage/ext_sd
Samsung uses external_sd
this is both in MM, so I doubt its an android issue. Is there some way to detect the removable / external sdcard and either:
(a) mount it as ext_sd (instead of XXXX-XXXX)
or
(b) dynamically create a symlink to whatever XXXX-XXXX happens to be so all the app references are not messed up?
not that its a life or death situation, but its just... um - "yuck"

SD Card Read only?

Greetings!
I purchased a new SD card from SanDisk with 400GB.(didn't use my old one on this phone because of low storage size)
My problem is that i'm unable to copy/move/delete files to my SD card.
I can't even create a new folder.
I tried several explorers and activated the permissions for writing but no success.
I was also trying another SD card but the same problem.
If I format the card over my phone as internal storage the phone freezes, formatting as external storage is working though.
I also formatted the card on my PC but still the same issue.
Remounting the card in the settings sometimes works for a few seconds.(creating a folder,etc..)
My razer phone 2 has the newest FW with Android 9.

Heya buddy,
Just a quick enquiry, from where did you purchase your MICROSD? it sounds like you may have a fake card, the memory size is worrying indication, normally cards are sold in denominations of 32, 64, 128, 512,GB not 400 GB. Have you run a check to see if it's reporting the correct capacity size on a SD card checker. Sounds like it's a fake and when it tries to format, it goes into a loop state and crashes as the card is formatted over and over and over trying to reach the stated size but never reaches it due to it not being 400gb in size.
Sorry to spread the bad news, have had the same happen to me, I am so dam careful over which company I buy my cards from.

Ok, that clears up the possibility of it being fake good good..
..hmmmmm. Do you have any old phones at your disposal that have a card slot? If so,. Try it in those and see if you can access it and read/write/modify files on it. Maybe format it with another device and then stick it in the razer and see if it works.
I'm sure now that cards a real deal as Amazon don't seem to allow frauds to be sold the only other thing I can think of is that it's a faulty card, it happens, they are just mass produced. Maybe a replacement if it's dudd.
I am having an SD card issue as well. I have had my Razer Phone 2 since last Monday brand new from Ebay. I purchased a Samsung 128GB class 10 (u3) SD card for it from Amazon. If I format the SD card as "internal", it shows that there is 131GB's of system files on my SD card. It shows I'm using 131GB's of storage from a total of 320GB's. The Razer Phone 2 has 64GB;s plus my 128GB SD card which would be 192GB;s total. I have tried many file manager apps, move to SD apps, etc and I cannot transfer any files. When I format the 128GB SD card as "portable", it shows the correct amount of storage space in both the phone and the card but once again I cannot transfer any files to the card. I have tried a 16GB SD card as well. The phone did recognize it and read the available storage on the phone and the card correctly. I did not format that card as I have music, photos and documents on it. I did try to transfer an app from my phone to the 16GB card and once again I could not do that. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance and take care.
I have had similar problems with my Razer2. It ruined a 512g scandisk brand microsd card. Copying, or moving files, is a real problem for this device! It hangs up sometimes and ruins the files. Never had these issues, this bad, with any other phone
I have a bunch of music on my SD card, my music app sees some of them. If I move the whole folder to my phone storage, music app sees all. If I boot to twrp (per arters kernel) and try to backup to external SD card, it fails. If I save it to the phone, works fine. It's like it doesn't constantly see the SD card slot properly.
Exfat is needed with art kernel. Stock formats as vfat a old file system. I have a 400gb exfat formatted and works perfectly
I'll have to look into getting that kernal
256gb samsung Sd card mine works fine razer phone 2

Moved some apps to SD Card and Internal Storage still full

Anyone else have an issue when trying to format an SD Card as Internal Storage? I just got a 128GB Samsung EVO Plus UHC 3 Class 10 SD Card for the purpose of extending the small 64 gb storage on the unit. When its formatted as internal it shows as a 256 GB Card with 132 GB Being used. When i go to app mgr and transfer the apps to SD Card i see the relative increase in space being used on my SD Card however my internal storage space stays just as full, which i believe shouldn't be the case. Anyone else have a similar issue, or know any workarounds to this issue? I do not think its device related as my girlfriends Razerphone 2 is acting the same way with the card i got for her. When we format it as removable storage it shows up correctly as a 128 GB but i dont want to be restricted to media only i dont plan on removing this card from the device.
Any assistance is much appreciated!
Thanks!
I have same issue but know not ofa work around or fix.
Even when you move apps to the SD card, the amount of data moved varies, and you'll still have necessary files on the internal storage. So I doubt you'll ever fully resolve that.
Regarding the idea in general, it's not a good idea to install apps on to the SD card in the first place. They are not designed to handle the amount of data writing that happens with normal app use and can corrupt the card relatively quickly. It's best to leave apps on the internal storage, and just put independent files (photos, videos, documents, etc) on the card.

Yeah but that isnt quite the issue. I see the gigs of storage space on my SD get used but the space on my internal storage remains exactly the same as it was before i moved as well. I paid extra for the Class 3 card just for better read and write speeds to be usable as internal storage. The 64 gigs on this is too little and id rather not have to redownload apps every time i decide to change a game.
On my previous HTC 10 with Android 8 when i combined my SD as internal it basically combined as a single storage with my internal had just one big storage drive. I didnt have a class 3 card for that one, it definitely slowed things down but was hoping for better results with this faster SD, just now it seems like the feature is broken and not working as intended on this Device model altogether
