all apps and launchers seem to crash. Guess it's time to learn how to use logcat... Probably something to do with how wear interacts with android apps

Cool, I can't wait till someone maybe gets a rom on this thing like the g watch just did today in hopes it can improve battery life and performance also ifixit found I wifi chip in the gear live, think of the possibilities if someone got that to work ?

I have side loaded root explorer and system panel and both work pretty good. Need root access to really do anything with root explorer. Going to try other apps later tonight.

I've been looking forward to do this as well. Mainly to allow the watch to have some stand alone functionality on it's own.
I tested adb install on my S3, and it resulted in the icon appearing in the app drawer. Was going to try this tonight, first app being the Cyanogen Calculator app. Not sure if this helps but do keep us appraised on how things goes on you end
I was trying to add Google chrome or nova launcher because I saw it actually was possible in this forum
yes you can side load look here

How to install Google Play Apps.

1) Download and install on your PC or Mac Wondershare MobileGo (Free Trial) - I cannot post the link - but u can find it on Google
2) Set the Gear to USB Debug and connect it through a USB cable to PC
3) MobileGo will download the drivers then it will recognize the connected device as Samsung SM-V700
4) MobileGo will also install its app on your Gear.
5) Now you can navigate the upper left menu including "Google Play Apps" from which you can install any app to your Gear, just click the app icon and then click on the green install button. You can check the process clicking "Downloads" on bottom left.
6) On the menu in the upper left of MobileGo under the menu "Apps" you will have access to all apps installed on Gear, clicking on this menu you can see all your installed apps and install or uninstall any app on your Galaxy Gear.
See some screenshot of MoblieGo.
I hope I was helpful
Thanks
Going to try it out.

How to install to GEAR? The Play Store cannot see my GEAR listed.
For never install apps, it will download, but for apps I had install at others device, it can't download.
Most cannot install...
Same for me, actually I can't install any app with your method from click on Google Play Apps, he ask me to login with my account and then don't offer to install on the gear
Sometime don't ask to log in and then add to dosnload list but don't want download, get error ;(
Edit : If I install app direct fril the option this work. But was Google Map and no internet on the watch, so was useless
Click install and then cancel and then install again most work after the second attempt
Mine says that my device is sleeping and won't work, what should I do?
Here it's working fine and installing any App from Google Play, as show on the screenshots, I installed Smart Launcher using MobileGo. Of course don't have to sign in on Google Play otherwise the apps will be installed only to the registered devices. Honestly I'm using the MobileGo Pro version which giving many more features to the program and may be this the issue that may not allow to install apps to devices non registered on Google Play like Galaxy Gear.
Working great for me!

Yeah! Without signing in, I can install more apps, but this means I can't get any paid apps that I already buy get install...
At least work for free apps, thanks a lot.
So easy, this is awesome! I finally have the calculator and calendar apps that i needed! Also running Nova launcher!
It's a nice app but too expensive to purchase. It will be useful for the free period of 14 days.
I found installing the apps that I want on my Note 3 and then, pushing the apps via ADB to Gear works just as well at no extra cost.

Fully charge phone this morning at 7:45am and 5 hours later, I am at 43% battery. Just turned the brightness to 4 and rebooted the gear. I think the MobileMe app which asks for wifi to be connected is draining the battery while trying to search. I have gone and closed all apps running in the background and will monitor for the next hour to see what the % looks like then.
Is there a way to remove the auto installed MobileMe app during this process.
Ian B
Update: An hour later and the battery was already in the 30s%. Ended up resetting the gear, charging for an hour and now, my battery is back to normal. Charged to 84% and an hour later, I am still at 80%. The Mobileme app and calculator app were removed by system when I reset the Gear.
Going after work to exchange this mocha brown color(only one in Austin available) for the Lime Green one at BB.

Can you elaborate on how you push the apps via adb? are you pushing from your phone? or backing up with titanium or something similar?
This works perfect.
Thanks.

can anyone make some more screenshots, or record a video?
can you get some sort of a small-sized phone functionality? i mean, place browser shortcut, install reddit client, use other calculators, show calendar etc?

You need to install ADB on your PC and use it in the command prompt window to install the apps on the gear.
You will need to be familiar with ADB commands like "adb install c:\director\filename" to install the app to the Gear, with the Gear's USB Debug option turned on and connected to your PC via USB cable.

How to Uninstall Apps

Is it possible to uninstall apps on my galaxy gear that I sideloaded without using ADB or a third party app?
I threw some apps on there for fun last night, went to sleep with my galaxy gear at 90% battery, woke up it was completely dead. Previously it was getting 1-2 days on a charge with heavy use. I figure something I installed is the problem. I can hook it up to my computer just wondering if there was an easy way.

I install a root enabled file manager and then got to the respective folder where the app is located (system/app or data/app) and delete it directly, then reboot. There may be a better way, but this seems to get the job done for me.

i use" Wondershare " to connect to Gear.
to install and uninstall apps .!!
very easy ,and no root rquired.
you must install Wondershare on pc etc .( Search Google for "Wondershare mobilego for Android" 15 day free trail vers. )
This for me is the safest and easiest way .!!
From Wondershare you can see all you apps ..etc
good luck
Post note. (in case you don't know here how..//otherwise ignore !)
if you install wondershare and you connect gear to pc with usb cable, it will install Wondershare app on NOTE 3 also and the drivers on pc So no problems Also you must enable Developers option on note 3 and tick ..usb debugging (Just be carefull if you uninstall, that you don't uninstall wrong apps !!)

If you install nova launcher, it will allow you to uninstall apps by long pressing an app by dragging it into the "uninstall" trash can on the upper left. You actually have to be in the app drawer though.

No but really there are three things that you absolutely need. a file manager, an uninstaller{i use perfect uninstaller(small file)), and a memory booster. ill post the ones i use . but you really need to think of it as a first generation tablet where you had to install that kinda stuff and just deal with the loss of space. these are the ways that they make you smart. its like as they evolve they put more and more complicated things to learn if you want to do cool stuff with them.

You are not supposed to have sideloaded apps. Or that is what Samsung implies, now you could use Helium or Titanium with cloud backup if you are rooted, otherwise loose the data each time you upgrade and install them again. Most apps meant for the gear are a combination of software on the phone and on the watch and probably store the data on the phone anyways.
To backup my apps and restore I use.. Wondershare mobile go..
It is fast and easy. Before you update Gear manager, just do a manual backup with Wondershare.,( select Toolkit /one lock backup or restore.)
note 3/note8.0 for xda
I hate it that it does it too. Funny thing, all my ringtones, notifications and videos r still there after it restores.

If you put your app apk's in /system/app instead of /data/app they won't disappear on upgrades

Another solution would require a bit of coding, a phone application without a launcher activity and APK files in assets folder and a few tweaks in the AndroidManifest.xml (I got one from ATNs phone app) would do a proper install of the apps through gear manager and they will survive the upgrades.
EDIT: not coding but you will need the IDE and SDK and know how of the process.
How about keeping root?
And now my MobileMe trial ends today. Damn it, may have to break down and pay for it. If anyone seems any discount codes, please post.

Keep a directory of all your apps on your desktop, reinstalling with wondershare is a breeze !
I also back up all my configurations, being novalauncher, tasker & widgets. You simply restore them once you reinstall your apps. They generally are stored on the SDCARD.
It shouldn't be a big bother, if you stay organized.
I full wipe my gear atleast 6 times a day (development purposes) and reinstalling everything literally takes 2 minutes at the most.

I don't have any sideloaded apps but one app I use from the Play store keeps getting deleted if I open the gear manager. When I install FEEDLY news reader it works fine and I can use but as soon as I open Gear Manager the app disappears from the phone.
When I go to install it from Google Play, it downloads and then this window appears with a Gear Manager unknown sources. I click OK to accept and it works and stays on the phone as long as I don't open gear manager.
It's starting to get me cheesed off as I use this app every day for news reading and having to reload it every time is really not good.
Loading any other app from Google Play seems to be OK and never shows this window.
Anyone else seen this?

I've been copying the apks to the "sdcard" then I just push the root explorer app to the watch and copy the apks back to data/app or system as needed. A little extra work but pretty quick that way.
Other backup with that wonder app. Would be great to automate it without needing a pc.

Found the system folder in apps with Airdroid, so I've copied the apk's to it.
Just use titanium backup. It will keep your applications and data backed up. It has a batch restore so the apps are right back in the same state as before they were deleted. It also has the nice feature of exporting apps from your phone directly to the Gear over bluetooth. No more worries about side loading with that functionality.
My problem is that apps disappear from my gear's app drawer every time I open gear manager. If I restart the gear, sideloaded apps appear in the app drawer again. Ive used adb fasboot to sideload the apps. What do i need to do so that apps stick and dont dissapear?

Im on the most recent GM provided by samsung apps, on a BNA3 firmware. Ive read and moved side loaded apps to system/app from data/app and it didn't do anything. are the only ones having this problem with the adb method?
I am sure Samsung is exercising control and trying to tell you what to run, and this I am not crazy about.
I have not sideloaded anything yet but it should be my right.

Downgrade gear manager to 1.5, or use Nova launcher... (or any other launcher)

Sideload any app/file to Galaxy Gear (no cables, no computer, no ADB, no MobileGo)

This is something that I ran across while reading sometime ago, so I take no credit for it, I just thought I'd pass it along to help others. Basically all you need to do is use a file manager/explorer on your Note 3 (I use "My Files" most of the time) and long press on the file/app that you want to send to your Galaxy Gear and then hit the "share" button at the top of your screen. Then select "Bluetooth", and then choose the Galaxy Gear. After that, just hit "accept" on the Gear and that's it...nothing else is needed. It may take a few minutes just because bluetooth file transferring isn't extremely fast, but it works, and without having to enter commands in terminal/ADB, without any cables, without MobileGo which is a trial version (or cost $40), and you don't even need the Galaxy Gear's cradle (that you probably left at home like I did).
Once the file/app has transferred over, just use a file manager on your gear to maneuver to the "SDcard/Bluetooth" directory where your files will be waiting on the Gear. Then you can simply double click to install them or just move them where ever you want. My Gear already had a file manager on it after I installed the custom rom Null 18. Otherwise, getting that file manager app onto the Gear may be your biggest (also last) challenge as far as sideloading apps goes. I rooted, and then flashed the Null 18 rom first to save time, but now sideloading is a piece of cake.
I also took this method to the next level since I am also rooted as I mentioned. What I mean by that, is with Root Explorer you can navigate to the System/apps directory (which is normally hidden if not rooted and using something like RE to access it). Once there, you'll find that this is the directory where your installed apps are stored. Now you can use the same method mentioned above to pull apps that you may not have had the .apk files for. So in essence you are "ripping" the apps right from your Note 3 straight to your Gear! This gives you the ability to try and install/run ANY Android app (even those that are said NOT to be compatible with the Gear) because a lot of them will still run. Google Search/Google Now/Voice Search is GREAT on the Gear, and so are many others. NOW this device is really kickin! Enjoy.
Sweet...many thanks ..

I'm pretty sure you have to be rooted on the Gear for this. I tried to do that when I went back to stock and was pretty mad that it wouldn't work. One more reason I was Null back.
But my Not3 is not rooted and na3 and na6 will not let me keep any sideloaded apps. So I am not going to get null back until this is fixed. I even went down to the first gear manager and it still doesn't work. Only mk7 with any gear manager allows me to keep my apps/put them on my home screen.
Works for me on a stock Note II!
How could I bluetooth download PdaNet Tablet to the Gear?
I need to get the files for PdaNet Tablet so I can get the BT PAN internet tethering going...
I can confirm that this works on my rooted Note II running stock 4.3

No need for root. Just use My Backup app on your phone. Saved apk is usually in sdcard/rerware
And this won't work for stock gear. But work on null rom. Been doing this for quite a while now.
