[Q] Cannot install CM11 and TWRP recovery on S3 mini - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys!
My goal is to have Android 4.3+ on the phone.
I'm trying to install CM11 on GT-I8190. I follow the instructions from Nova fusion. After flashing with Odin the phone doesn't boot. I just see the logo of CyanogenMod and that's it....
When I enter the recovery, I see a stock one: Ansroid System Recovery <3e>... But CM11 ROM from NovaFusion already comes with TWRP recovery!
I already tried to install CWM and TWRP recovery separately via Odin. But it doesn't have any effect.
What can be wrong with the phone?
Thanks in advance!
P.S. Writing this post for the 3rd time.. When I try to preview it, I have a token problem and all my writing is lost....

Some s3 mini's can't replace the stock recovery with a custom recovery so it means you have to flash it manually via root access.
1. Go back to stock ROM. Simple download a Firmware from sammobile.com/firmware and flash it via odin3
2. After that root your phone with vROOT. How to install it on your PC and how root your phone with vROOT :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2459910 (enable USB debbuging first before you start rooting)
3. Download "ROM manager" from Google play store and install CWM recovery
4. Download "TWRP recovery 2.7.1.0" from NovaFusion : novafusion.pl/download and flash it via CWM.
4. Download latest CM11 Version and flash it via TWRP recovery
(do a nandroid backup first to avoid mistakes and don't forget to make a factory reset otherwise your phone won't boot and will stuck in bootloop)
5. Enjoy CM11
If you have questions or problems, then let me know

Thanks for so fast response! Now I have a hope!
I've already installed stock ROM (UK version)... I8190XXAMJ2_I8190BTUAMJ1_HOME.tar.md5 But I downloaded it not from the website that you suggested.
Anyway, after flashing stock rom the phone works, but I cannot copy any file to the phone... Windows 7 says: "Unrecognized USB device". Maybe I installed the wrong version of ROM? I am sure it is for GT-I8190, but maybe the country is wrong? Does country matter?

It doesn't matter for which country you downloaded. from SamMobile you only get original signed firmwares for your GT-i8190 and you can choose your firmware country.

Not working. I uninstalled USB drivers and Kies... Installed back. Still the device is not recognized. In device manager displayed as "Unknown device" with problems.
The phone is charging. But I don't see the option about USB connection type (so, I cannot choose MTP / PTP / ...) That is why i cannot use vRoot...
I am using the cable that comes with the phone. What can be wrong?

You can change between MTP and PTP in settings > storage and touch the menu button then you will see "USB-Connection" option
If you still get problems try a other Computer or flash a other firmware from sammobile.com/firmware via Odin3 or enable USB-debbuging in settings > developer option

Doesn't work. When I go to Settings -> Storage, I see only internal memory stats... No option about USB connection.
USB debugging enabled / disabled - no effect.
When enable internet USB pass-through - my laptop can see the device as a network adapter (modem).
I will try it on some other PC.

Maybe old firmware but try first a other PC if it still don't work then tell me in which country you live, i will search the latest original signed firmware for your country. Then flash it via odin3 (if possible)

Did you try install samsung driver yet? It's on novafusion team download site. Try that first.
If that's not going to work, use another computer instead.

Thank you very much!!!
I took another Galaxy S3 mini phone (I have 10 of them)... And my laptop can recognize it. So, I've managed to root the phone, installed ROM manager and then installed CWM, TWRP and latest CyanogenMod!
So, with other phones that I didn't touch yet I plan to do the same procedure.
My country is Russia The origin of the phone might be something else...
The first phone is still not recognized by my laptop. Other PCs don't recognize it either.
Just to remind what I did to the phone before it became like that:
Using Odin - installed CyanogenMod 11.0 (following simple procedure from the website)
It didn't load, so i tried older versions of CM and tried different recoveries with Odin...
It didn't work. Using Odin, I installed stock firmware GT-I8190-UK I8190XXAMJ2_I8190BTUAMJ1_HOME.tar - Android JB 4.1.2 (from sammobile website)
And then I was happy until I realized that my laptop now doesn't want to recognize the phone. And the phone doesn't want to recognize my laptop.
May be this info will be helpful to find out the origin country:
When I type *#1234#, I see the following:
Code:
AP: I8190XXANC2
CP: I8190XXALL2
CSC: Unknown
When I type *#06#, I see:
IMEI: 3547840580817xx / 01 (BTW, in russia you cannot track a phone by it's IMEI... this technology is not implemented in this yet)
Maybe I should try flashing 4.1.1 instead of 4.1.2? But I couldn't find 4.1.1.

Help! I accidentally deleted my OS

I know this is probably the stupidest thing one can do and since I mediocre knowledge about Android stuff I just did that. While I was on CWM recovery mode I was tinkering around the settings and I accidentally deleted the OS, this leaves me soft-bricked (is that the term)? When I boot up on recovery mode again it says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." But when I connect it to Kies it doesn't detect the phone! And when I boot up download mode it says I have Custom binaries (it says 3) which I suppose is because I had CWM? I have no idea how I could re-install my OS back to my phone and am panicking since this was my first phone. Is flashing back to stock firmware a viable option if I accidentally deleted my OS? Or so I have to do some other process? Please I am in dire need of assistance here!

Yes just flash back stock firmware with Odin.
That custom binary is probably from the time of GB because root method was increasing it. You can use Triangle away to reset it, it is free on xda.

I have kies and I always close it before opening, doesn't appear. Even the switch port thing doesn't. I'm going to try out 3.09. Since I accidentally deleted my OS doesn't that mean Windows won't detect it even if it's on download mode? Sorry I really have no idea what I'm doing. oh yes I have the Drivers installed.

Odin does not have anything to do with system partition, I mean it will work anyway. Do not just close Kies, go to task manager and kill it (in Windows).
P.S. If you have any ROM in your sd card, you can go to CWM and install it. Or if you have some other phone, put SD card in it, copy ROM and install it in CWM.
Gonna use this topic becaus i think i have simmilar problem.
So i rooted my phone and installed sucsesfully a custom rom with this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2198341
Then i wanted to install another cutom rom and i booted into recovery and it was not TWRP as i used it when i installed custom rom but CWM, and i dont know what was i thinking i installed over it again CoCore + TWRP
So i do have acces to TWRP but i cant install anything, i get constalty this error:
E: Unable to mount /preload
How can i fix it?
Thanks for help

Kill KIES in task manager on PC. Sometimes it makes a problem. It does not matter on what ROM you are, Download mod should work, unless USB connector is broken,

Download these USB drivers. Before installing, uninstall Kies and/or Samsung USB drivers currently installed, download CCleaner for Windows and after installation run it and clean Windows registry through this program. To be sure, reboot your PC then install downloaded USB drivers and retry

Yes, with help of @AntaresOne
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2612540
Flash that, than CoCore kernel, than ROM. And keep some 4.4 based ROM in case you did something wrong - that you can go back to it. But you better find a way to use Odin.

So, long way?
1- Download CoCore kernel zip, HarshJelly v 1.00 ROM and HarshJelly v 5.2 update. DON'T UNPACK THEM, copy directly on device's memory or MicroSD.
2- Power on your device in recovery mode: press and keep pressed Vol+, Home and Power keys and release only Power when you feel the vibration.
3- In this menu do "Wipe data/factory reset", after go to "Mounts and storage" and do "format /system", then "back"
4- Now select "install zip from sdcard" and first choose CoCore kernel, then choose HarshJelly 1.00.
5- Select "Reboot system"
6- Wait some minutes, if you have done all correctly you should see device configuration wizard.
7- Reboot again your device in recovery and this time install HarshJelly 5.2 without touching anything else than "install zip from sdcard"
8- Select again "Reboot system"
HarshJelly ROM is TouchWiz based, this means that is a custom ROM based on Samsung's stock OS
EDIT: I forgot to tell you to install this before step 5!

[Q] bootloop in cyanogen 10.1

a few days ago i dropped my galaxy s2 in the toilet(dont laugh) so i went to using my brother's old s plus I9001.
long story short,i tried to upgrade the 2.3.3 to a 4.2.2 Jellybean using this guide : http://au.ibtimes.com/articles/4579...alaxy-s-plus-i9001-android-4.htm#.VAWoGfmSzGA
i searched a few other guides beforehand,most of which stated that i need a rooted phone,so i rooted it using a guide i found on this forum(here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_Plus/GT-I9001)
this is everything i did :
1. Connect the Galaxy S Plus to your computer.
2. Unrar the CM 10.1 firmware RAR file you have downloaded
3. Copy the CM 10.1 firmware you have extracted from the unrar file to the SD card of your phone.
4. Turn off the Galaxy S Plus.
5. Reboot the device into Recovery mode. Press Volume up + Home + Power keys simultaneously. You can flash this ROM using the stock recovery or a custom recovery app.
6. In the Recovery mode, select "wipe data/factory reset" and "wipe cache partition."
7. Then select "install zip from SD card" and "choose zip from SD card." Search for the firmware you have copied on the device.
8. Select the firmware file and install it.
9. Go back and select "reboot system now."
so everything went well, until i tried rebooting the device.im stuck now at the cyanogenmod logo.basically i have a boot loop isue.
being a noob at these kind of things,my first thought was that my phone had bircked,so i followed an unbricking tutorialobviously,it didnt work.
can you please help me solve this bootloop s**t? :good::good:
First of all flash TWRP (Recovery).
Then download CM 10.2 from here and copy it in your internal SD card.
Boot into Recovery.
Do a Data & Cache wipe and finally flash CM 10.2.
Optionally: Flash Gapps (Google Apps)

How can i unbrick my phone? (no usb connection)

I was on NL1 rom, but trynig to use safestrap, i've flashed NC2 kernel.
Because of that my phone doesn't show screen after showing Galaxy note logo.
Everything works fine, but it only doesn't shows screen.
I really want to fix it, but I can't use ODIN to fix my phone.
When i connect it to pc, windows only shows Unknown device(every pc, every cable).
Is there has any way to fix my phone? (using stock recovery... etc).
Can you boot into download mode?
Of course, i can.
But also in Download mode, windows cannot recognize my device. It only says Unknown device.
Wait for pc to install driver completely after booting to download mode is what it sounds like to me. A icon in the windows taskbar tells when it is completed.

Since you flashed the NC2 kernel, restart your phone and see if you see Safestrap splash screen. If you do, then boot to Safestrap and flash this SM-N900A_NL1_KERNEL_RecoveryFlashable.zip https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=96042739161891595 from your Sd Card.

After you uninstall them, restart your computer and see if that fixes the problem. After you flashed the NC2 Kernel, did you wipe anything in Safestrap or in Stock recovery?

What it needs to boot right, is the NL1 kernel, but Safestrap is gone since you did a wipe with stock recovery. You can't get a computer to see your phone, so you can't flash the kernel in Odin either. Only thing I know to do is do a wipe/factory reset, then do a wipe cache partition in stock recovery. After you do that, see if it boots and if it don't you would have to put this on your Sd Card and apply update from external storage in stock recovery. Instructions to Flash the Lollipop OTA http://www.droidviews.com/update-att-note-3-with-lollipop-ota-and-root-it/. You only need the one file. BUT if you can't use your usb port, you will be stuck on non rooted lollipop. This will either pass or fail, but you can try to flash the NL1 kernel with stock recovery SM-N900A_NL1_KERNEL_RecoveryFlashable.zip (link in post #7).

I can't use ota update.zip as you know i'm not in stock firmware.
Also can't install NL1 kernel because it used not allowed zip signature on stock recovery.

You're just going to have to replace the USB Dock Charger Charging Port Flex Cable, then you can do thing with Odin then.

I think you need a custom recovery installed such as TWRP to disable dm-verity, but don't quote me on it.

I think your problem is that you're not on the stock rom and you're trying to use the stock recovery... dm_verity goes hand in hand with the official rom, you can see this if you go into download mode, you would see binary would say something like "samsung official" system status would say something like "original" or "official". You can find this in smart switch > more > emergency software recovery and initialization > device initialization.
Why is using TWRP not possible? Please elaborate, what rom are you running? I think 3rd party recovery is necessary to bypass this issue in all cases when using unofficial rom.
I would suggest initializing your device via smart switch, make sure to back up everything if you can as it will be lost, however, I think that it should resolve the issue entirely. Initialization if you can't boot into stock rom, you will need to enter download mode and in smart switch type the model number and then the serial number, it should initiate then.
You could try waiting for someone who knows their stuff, but initialization via smart switch (not just the image pulled from sammobile which leaves some files out) is probably the way to go, IMO. I'm just a novice, but I'm the only one that's replied, so hopefully some others can chime in and say if I'm giving you bad advice.

You will always fail dm-verity in stock recovery on a modified device.
It's pointless trying to OTA on a modified device. It will fail.
To update you need to flash the stock firmware with odin in DOWNLOAD mode not RECOVERY.

Then use flashfire to install the stock rom. It will install everything except the bootloader.

You don't need a PC. Just install supersu with twrp.

Then there's nothing you can do. You either need root, twrp or odin.
I have a similar problem, dm+verity verification failed in stock recovery but I have not rooted or installed any other firmware.
So my questions are
1. Has someone else installed it without my knowledge?
2. Has someone installed something through adb sideload without my knowledge?
3. Have i deleted something I shouldnt have?
4. When i go into stock recovery and before i choose what to such as "recovery logs" if i hold down the home/finger print button for about 2 secs the highlighted colour changes from blue to green, is this normal?
Thanks in advance
