[Q] Notification sounds while in LG 4X HD in silent mode - LG Optimus 4X HD

Since a couple of months I have been running the P880 nightly builds and they have all had the problem below. Currently I am on CM11-20140713-NIGHTLY-p880.
When my phone is in silent mode, you can still hear the notification sounds. It does not matter where the phone is set to vibrate or whether the sound is just turned off (usually selected through holding the power button and selecting one of the silent modes). This only applies to notification sounds, i.e. when the phone rings you cannot hear this.
You can also reproduce this by putting the phone in a silent mode and under Settings->Sound->Notifications selecting any of the sounds. You will be able to hear the sound selected. When I try this on a different type device using the same version of CM11, you cannot hear the notification sounds in silent mode.
Any suggestions?

Really? Sounds like a serious issue then. I too encountered this with Hangouts in vibration mode. Also sometimes it's the opposite, notification sounds don't work when not silenced, need to reset volume.

It can indeed be quite embarrassing in a meeting
What surprises me a bit is that the basic silent functionality works for phone calls, but not for notifications. I had not expected that to be a device dependent feature.

I had this problem a while ago. If you look in sound settings, there'll be an option when you press "volumes" saying "silent mode affects notifications". If this isn't ticked, tick it. For me, it was greyed out until I deselected "link ringtone and notifications volumes", so I unchecked that, then checked both. See if that works

That worked. How obscure. Thanks!

Vibrate Only on FroYo

Ever since I updated to FroYo, I lost the feature of having vibrate only for phone calls and text messages. Usually using the volume rocker (up and down) it would go from silent > vibrate > ring.. On FroYo it goes from silent > ring..
Any idea how to fix it?
I know I can do it manually by making the option be vibrate on silent in phone settings.. But sometimes I do not want my phone to vibrate on silent.. Just a hassle of going into settings and turning it off each time when i do not want it
It sounds like your problem is two fold.
First, mine goes from sound bar down to vibrate. (I don't know if ADW launcher has an affect on this or not).
Secondly, you might want to look in to the settings applications on the market and see if you can set and restore settings for those times you want just silent and vibrate for some parts.
Are you using modaco's rom?
I use a widget called extended controls which is like an enhanced version of the stock power control widget. It has options for vibrate only or complete mute.
sliding the speaker on the lock screen should put it on vibrate only on froyo
Nope the Lock screen slide makes it completely silent. Is it only Modaco's rom ?
Did you check settings> sounds > vibrate and ensure it is not never or only when not silent?
Well neither of those options help because its either one or the other. I do not want it to always vibrate or just vibrate when on silent.. I dont know why it disappeared :S
Did you try "vibrate only on silent mode" and see if you get the option? I'm tuning kang-of-rama froyo and it works and that is what mine is set to. Otherwise maybe reflash your rom?

Vibrate only in silent mode defeats the purpose of silent mode
Stupid google, wth were they thinking with this change. I don't understand why they had to fix something that wasn't broken.
you can do it from individual app setting for sound, and in the home screen setting. that way you can tailor each app's vibrate, or silence the way you prefer.
Everyone is missing the point here. I have a Droid running Froyo and am experiencing the same problem. It is really not that hard to understand, but so many forums about this issue are full of replies that misunderstand the issue:
Prior to Froyo, Silent and Vibrate were 2 distinct functions:
Silent: ringer volume at zero and vibrate was disabled. Perfect for a theatre or a quiet meeting where even a vibrate would be annoying and disrespectful.
Vibrate: ringer volume at zero and vibrate enabled. Perfect for keeping the phone in your pocket, being aware of notifications, but not having your phone beeping and ringing all day.
This all makes sense, yes? By using the volume rocker, it was possible to adjust from full ringer volume down to low ringer volume. If you continued down after the volume was at it quietest, you activated vibrate mode. Then, if you clicked down once more, you would enable silent mode. Also all makes sense. And is extremely useful and intuitive.
In Froyo, Google has changed the way the OS handles volume control when it comes to silent mode and vibrate mode. And quite frankly, they have screwed it all up. Now, in Settings, you can specify whether the phone should vibrate "Always", "Never", "Only in Silent Mode", "Only when not in Silent Mode".
Ugh. So what that means is they have essentially done away with a distinction between silent and vibrate and now instead of having quick access to both options, you have to pick whether silent means truly silent like before or whether it really means vibrate. So frustrating.
So far, the only solutions I have seen out there are to download one of the many widgets that allows you to toggle between vibrate, silent, and ringing via a home screen icon. But this is not good enough. I want Volume Rocker control back of true Silent and true Vibrate modes.
Someone here on XDA must know how to fix this. Can't someone come up with an app that overrides the volume rocker? Or even an update.zip that restores the 2.1 functionality here?
Here's to hoping!
EDIT: here is the official google help thread on this topic: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=3f836bd37ec0dc88&hl=en
Hmm it seems i'm not the only one who misses that option on Froyo!
I used it quite a lot...going from sound to vibrate (when going out) then going into a meeting just one more click and the phone was on silent.
There must be someone who knows how to fix this?
Any news on this ?
Tbh I like the new way much better

for a second i thought i was going crazy but it seems like everyone has the same problem
oh well, here's hoping google fixes this soon. i want the old "silent [no vibrate] -> vibrate only -> ringer+vibrate" setup back.
Agreed I prefer 2.1's behaviour.
I'm using Curvefish's "Beautiful Vibrate" widget as a workaround for now.
i just upgraded to froyo and this missing feature also really annoys me..
it's been some time since the last post in this thread. are there any proper solutions/workarounds yet?
Settings -> sound -> check silent state

sorry, there's nothing to check there this post within this thread describes the problem very well: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6975085&postcount=12
i can't find the "beautiful vibrate" widget within the market, guess it doesn't exist anymore?
[edit]
i'm using "silent toggle widget" now, seems to be working as expected, but of course doesn't replace the volume rocker feature/settings from 2.1

Captivate only vibrates when receiving an SMS!!

It will not make a sound whatsoever! Everything I try, it only vibrates. I do not have a single option for vibration enabled! I've tried changing various settings through the Settings/Sound and Display submenu, and I've even went into the SMS/MMS application and see nothing in there that is set to vibrate. I've tried my phone in Silent, and it's Silent. I've tried it in Vibrate, and it's Silent. Yet, when I up the volume to max, it vibrates. Anything between Vibrate and Max Volume, the phone vibrates. Anybody have any ideas?
Have you checked to see if theres a notification/text ringtone enabled? It's possible to set the ringtone to "Silent," while having all of your volumes turned up.
If that doesn't work also try a factory reset
from the initial messaging screen click the menu button, settings, scroll to the bottom, there is a notifications settings section, make sure you've got a ringtone selected in there & if you dont want the vibrate in addition, uncheck vibrate.
The ringtone is set to tweeters and the vibrate option is not ticked.

this is a bug I have had the same problem. I think it's when you get a text while your talking on your phone, but i'm not sure 100% But if you shut your phone off and turn it back on it will fix itself until it wants to do it again
The same thing as happening to me I shut it off and on several times and it still doesn't work help plz i have also uninstalled the music player and replaced it with another android music player maybe that's the problem?

[Q] Galaxy Tab automatic silent mode?

Hi guys!
I've been reading and searching this forum for a few days and I can't find anything that is related to the problem I'm having right now with my Galaxy Tab.
As of right now, whenever I receive any phone call on my Tab, it automatically switches to silent mode (crossed speaker icon on notification bar). It drives me crazy as I can't hear the ringtone whenever someone calls me, even though it's not on silent mode at the first place. The weird thing is it automatically switches back to normal mode when the call ended.
I've been missing too many calls because I can't hear it ringing. I already pressed the power button and made sure the phone is not on silent mode, and tried calling the Tab using my home phone, and it switches to silent mode when the call arrives.
Anyone have a solution to this? Please help. I'm on wits end here!
Download audio manager to see what all the different volume levels are set too. Might be something funny going on
I have installed audiomanager and checked that none of the volume levels are zero or set to silent. This is really frustrating.
Is there any way to soft reset the Tab without losing all the installed apps and data?
I have different problem related to silent mode.
When I am in silent mode, all the notification sounds are off but then when I play games, the sound is on. I have to go into setting to set "media voume" to zero manually if i want to play game wihtout sound.
This is kinda inconvient, I suppose silent mode mean silent everything.
It's kind of funny that on a number of the Droid ROM forums people are asking for this as a *feature* to avoid the annoying vibration that incoming messages and other notifications make when on a call.

I have the same problem. All the volume controls are high but ringer don't sound. any idea?
Be sure to check ALL the settings in ALL the settings and apps that pertain to anything that has sound.
This includes all the games, alarm clocks, video recorders, video players, music players, radios, etc. I had a similar problem, and this approach seemed to help.

[Q] Notifcations don't sound

Alright this one is strange. Sometimes my notifications won't make sound. I find the only way to get them to sound is to reboot my phone. My only question is why is it that this happens in the first place? I use the droid notification for texts from the phone's normal menu and for gtalk I use one from my sd card. I am really at a loss here...
I'm also having issues with notifications, but more with the vibrate. None of my notifications I mark as "vibrate" actually vibrate, despite having it marked to "always" vibrate in the sound menu.
As for your problem, cstrife, do you have any apps that change volume or is your volume in the "sound" menu different? I know that Lightflow seemed to mess with my sounds a bit. I also use "notification manager" to turn off sounds at night, and sometimes in the morning the scheduler doesn't restore volume settings properly.
Gawd I'm just waiting for a good custom ROM.

Nope no apps other than the volume settings I use.

I notice the exact same thing regarding the vibrate function... I can feel incoming calls, but not any notifications (i.e. texts, GoogleTalk IMs, etc.). Not a SUPER huge deal, but would rather it work--than not.

phone changes settings too easily

So my pixel 4 5G mutes my sounds daily, will put me in do not disturb, airplane mode or whatever anytime it feels the urge, so it would seem. I've set the screen lock to immediately lock when I kill the screen but it hasn't helped. Do I need to set it to only come on when I press the power button to stop this? SO frustrating. Sure love the camera on this thing though!

Do you have any rules set to change your ring mode?

Ring mode? rephrase please. There's no such thing as a "ring mode". You may silence the ring tone, you may change the ring tone, you can turn up or down the ring tone volume, but there are no modes that I know of.

There are 3 ring modes:
Silent
Vibrate
Sound
I say "ring mode" because it's simpler than "volume, sound, and vibrate settings".
As for rules, check under Settings > System > Rules. You can create rules to automatically effect certain actions, such as changing your ring mode at a certain location or when connected to a certain WiFi network. Since my wife always puts her phone on Silent at work, I created such a rule on her phone so that she won't miss my calls when she's home.
Ah yes, of course, sorry. And that's what the phone does, is change my mode too easily. So I checked rules and there are none made. I was finally able to access my notifications while on car bluetooth though(car speaker would not voice notifications), found the setting to let the phone do the notifications in the car's bluetooth properties (Yay) And thanks for chiming in VOlatyle, appreciated. Thanks for your service as well. The odd thing about this is, my brother has the same phone purchased at the same time and it doesn't act like this. I may do a factory reset and reload it to see if that helps.
