[Q] question Rooting Xperia Z - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All,
I am going round in circles, so hopefully someone will be able to point me in the correct direction.
I have an Xperia Z regretably updated to android version : 4.4.2 / kernel version : 3.4.0-perf-g32ce454 / Build number : 10.5.A.0.230.
I wish to root the phone so I can install Avast antivirus / theft and Titianium Pro basically so I can get rid of the dross Apps and protect my data should my phone get stolen.
All I want to do is root the phone , I do not need to install any custom roms.
I have tried Androxyde's Xperia flashing tool v0.9.16.1 which reports my phone cannot be offically unlocked (bootloader?) and also reports "part1 exploit did not work" when trying to root the phone.
Doomlord's Easy Rooting toolkit v18 gets to *start daemon*, *daemon started* and then just sits there.
So does anyone know how to simply get root access for the Xperia Z running 4.4.2 ?
Thanks
Smess
PS I did encrypt my phone and then found you cannot backup your data to your PC, fine idea epic fail.
Now factory reset to remove encryption.

Well firstly, you should download towelroot from the actual source towelroot.com.
Edit - It appears there's a problem with the website's certificate at the moment, so I assume that why androidtweaker1 linked to elsewhere. ?
Edit 2 - It appears to be fixed now.
Secondly, root exploits trigger AV software because technically they use a security hole to push files to /system. Malware would use similar techniques, but there's nothing to worry about in this case. Either temporarily disable your AV or download straight to your phone.

I personally prefer to download from the original source  but some issue is there on the towelroot site at the moment so I gave alternate link
Clicking the lambda on the site is still giving issues on my side

Xperia Z rooted
Many Thanks
Xperia Z rooted and Avast & Titanium installed sucessfully. Had to remove Towelroot afterwards as Avast kept complaining about it.
Donation on its way.

Yes, I acknowledged that there was a problem with the site at the time. ?

Yes there will be. Be quiet now and wait till it's released.
Next time, post in Question&Answers not in General, as this obviously is a question.
why did not you think about that before you buy phone first locked phone and now crying out about root you should of get your self simple sim-free solution !!
for now i dont see reason to root phone is work fine without being picky !!
According to Doom it will take a longer while

Why root? Debloat, adblock, exchange security, data backup & restore, adblock, there's totally plenty of reasons to have stock rooted as well. But yeah, wait and STFU it is.

I agree with you, in addition reason for rooting for me, it is to change the fallback fonts and sync the system time.
I just try to live with unroot one, it's hard for a moment, however, I am still satisfied the stock ROM.
And I am also waiting for "just root" without unlocking bootloader.

Update:
Japanese Xperia Z (docomo SO-02E) has been rooted.
Rooting exploit by goroh_kuh, EasyRootingToolkit by huhka. See instructions here:
http://blog.huhka.com/2013/03/root-xperia-z-so-02e-rootingkit.html
Caution:
By rooting, you will void warranties you have with docomo.
The tooting toolkit is still new, so there may still be unknown issues
If there are any problems, you are on your own in fixing them
Compatible with both 10.1.D.0.317 and 10.1.D.0.322 firmwares.
Enable USB debugging and Unknown sources. Run runme.bat, and follow screenshot instructions.
This is root only, it does not unlock bootloader and does not wipe DRM (BE2 still works after rooting)
From 2ch:
Running the root script may cause your FeliCa/おサイフケータイ to stop working. Deleting or renaming \data\usf (a directory created by the rooting script) reportedly fixes some FeliCa programs (such as モバイルSuica), but this has not been extensively tested. Additionally, the おサイフケータイ app will report "Services in UIM/USIM card are not available because the function is locked or inserted UIM/USIM card doesn't support the services."
Other Docomo-/Japan-only services (infrared, 1seg, etc) appear to still work correctly.
For further updates, please check huhka's blog, goroh_kun's twitter, xperia-freaks.org, or current SO-02E rooting thread on 2ch.

shouldnt matter as AFAIK running a complete repair operation with PC Companion should erase all rooting traces.
Great news! We can expect something similar for Z then now?

only the download link is banned, you can get the file somewhere else, and the guide tells you how to use it, and this one is actually an easier option:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2130276
it roots the nexus 4, which is the same hardware as our zxr, it should work.

Thanks, I gave this a try.
The two exploits, Aragorn and Gandalf, both fail. "Try another exploit if available. Error 5" Well I gave it a shot. Any advice is welcome
I also want to root my c5503, with a locked bootloader.
I found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2386405 and according to it i just need a older kernel.
So here are my questions: is the 10.1.1.A.1.310 old enough and does it work with this root method?
How do i get just the kernel out of an existing ftf file?
Thanks for help guys!
Download vroot to your pc and intall, plug your phone run vroot and press green button that says root, that's it, now you can change the superuser app of your choice.
Hope I helped

Thanks for the hint, but i don't trust in vroot...
try kingo root
Made in ZR
I finally managed to root with the following steps:
1) flashed the .310 Nordic ftf
2) used doomlords exploid v18
3) ota updates to vers .67 --> root still persists
I also tried to flash only the 310 kernel (like rooting the description from the z says), but that ended up in a bootloop with the Sony logo. -no idea why!

how did you enable the ota update on rooted .310? I temporarily disabled it with ota preserver but nothing happens.
I didn't had to enable it, it was enabled by default!
I just gave the ota update after the root a try and it just worked...

It thinks it's already updated for me. so is there no way to enable it?
EDIT: Never mind, managed to fix it: It turns out I was trying to upgrade from the global version of .310; reflashing to the Hong-Kong version allowed me to update.

Rooting xperia zr without Loosing drm data & having locked bootloader

As you know there are not many kernel options for ZR as in Z you have to unlock bootloader to root the phone to flash it with CWM or any other recovery.
So this is detailed Guide to root Xperia ZR & having Locked Bootloader
1) Don't upgrade your phone to 4.2.2_10.3.1.A.2.67 Firmware & If you already updated it to Downgrade it to 4.1.2_10.1.1.a.1.310 Firmware In Flash mode Using Flashtool 9.13 (Download Flashtool 9.11 install it After upgrade it with 9.12 & 9.13) don't unlock bootloader.
2)Now Root it Using DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v18_perf-event-exploit. to root just click runme.bat. Your phone will get root access & you will get Superuser app
3)Then use Backup-TA-9.8 to backup your TA.img & save it at any Safe location for further Use ( It Content DRM Data & must be saved throughout lifespan of your phone).
4)Now upgrade your phone to 10.3.1.A.2.67 either by OTA or Using Sony PC companion & if you are unable to get upgrade don't panic just use flashtool & flash the 4.1.2_10.1.1.a.1.310 again & try the OTA upgrade. (As i do have both for Indian region but attachments will be too big to Attach here).
5)Now install Vroot on your PC & root your phone with it. Now you can see that your bootloader got unlocked but don't panic install SuperSu from Playstore update binary for it reboot your phone. now freeze Superuser from Vroot using titanium backup then update binary for SuperSu. Now convert Superuser from Vroot into user app using Titanium Backup. Reboot Your phone update binary for SuperSu & uninstall superuser from Vroot.
6)Now Use BLU button From Flashtool. on pressing BLU button Flashtool it will prompt to start phone in flash mode to unlock bootloader just do as prompted but dont disconnect the phone after boot loader just hit the BLU button to re-lock bootloader. Reboot your phone.
7)Now just flash Back-up your TA Using Backup-TA-9.8.
8)Congratulation now you have rooted phone with locked bootloader with full functionality.
I wrote this because i just lost DRM data things cant be undone.
SO for all Niewbies this is guide to ROOT ZR with Locked BootLoader.

OK i agree there are there are many guide for rooting but all are applicable to Z or Zl having many kernel options. not as Zr which has very few kernel option.
Try any Method except vroot on Zr & tell me which are more useful.
Even vroot unlocks bootloader so to get root with 4.1 without unlocking bootloader is precautionary because accidental wipe of Ta partition may void Warranty.
This is not for pro who can build kernel for those who knew very less about android, to avoid them all pain i suffered.
& again i joined this forum 4 days ago as you think but i used this subscribed it 4 years ago with my first X10 & used it Since then anonymously as i lost my password for cant retrieve it.
& Tell me What is inaccurate i will try it Myself.
If you think its ridiculous why you haven't posted how to Root Zr it would have saved me a lot of pain.
So as you done nothing before stay as you are at least i m trying to save pain of others.

DRM data is Digital Rigths Management Data which links purchased data to your phone without which you cant use data u purchased. More Important without which warranty voids, Bravia Engine seizes to work properly as it works with DRM Data. & Track Id downloaded from Market will not integrate with walkman which are Sony proprietary software's.

hmm... i don't get any sort of crap from that software on my PC... maybe cos i was smart enough not to just blindly click Next all the way. IE/reg/security settings are all fine (part of my job is IT security so i know when weird things come into my PC)
as for the screenshot of the superuser app "dialing home", well one of the first few things i did was to replace it with SuperSU...
what..?? I've never seen a rooting procedure which unlocks the BL... and that last one absolutely doesn't need to be unlocked for rooting ! Honestly, I've serious doubts about your intentions. Why the hell do you tell upgrading, flashing, flashing back and blabla... this is too complicated.
Get vroot or kingo root, that's all you need

anyone willing to test latest firmwares root ?

Greetings.
there is some chinese root applications : kingoroot, vroot ( seems kingoroot "steal" method from vroot or vise versa )
anyway, this stuff, beside root, install few applications and kinda download something from somewhere.
i'm extracted their root method, cleaned it from encryption and repackaged it as standalone application, which is definitely not install any stuff, except su and busybox
i don't know on which phones and firmwares it works, but it is definitely work on latest 4.x firmwares, i'm tested with xperia t,tx,e,tipo,s, etc.
so grab it, extract it into any folder and run root.cmd
you must enable usb debugging in phone settings and adb driver should be installed, of course ( grab one from http://developer.sonymobile.com/downloads/drivers/ )
anti-ric daemon included in package as well and installed automatically.
Mod edit: Removed.
hmm, seems there is no such users
I already rooted my 6603 10.31.A..2.67 with Kingo, so I can't root again with your cleaned toolkit.
What applications are installed by Kingo, as far as u know? I found no obvious installed apps.

they install some kind of rooting daemon, but as i can see it is completely safe.
as i understand, users are worried, that original vroot/kingoroot programs actively using internet
so i'm removed crypto layers from root exploit program ( so willing developers can get exploit and release it as their own in new program ) , removed "protection" check, add anti-ric daemon and released package.
it is completely standalone and not require anything, but adb drivers

Thank you for providing a little more info. I will unroot and try this later today on ES .67...
worked on 10.3.1.A.2.67_Generic_de.tft clean flash
Worked on 10.3.1.A.2.67_Generic_ES.ftf. Good work! We'll see how it performs with 4.3 upon arrival...
btw, this root working not only on c660x phones, but on many others : i'm tested on latest firmwares for lt29,lt30,st21,st26,c150x,c160x,c210x
and i'm think it will nicely work on c550x,c530x and so on
though, i'm heavily doubt that it will work on 4.3 ...

hard to tell, what your friend did.
but exploit is not fixed in any android firmware with kernel version [ 3.0 ... 3.4.4 ] - so this tool as any other, based on get_user/set_user problems, should work.

method 2 doesnt work for me.
I tried method 2 first tho. but didnt work, so i go for method 1, and it works. thanks for sharing
thanks man, It works with latest firmware

Settings>About phone then tap on the "Build number" multiple times to unlock developer mode. Then Settings>Developer options and check the box for "USB debugging".

[ROOT TOOL] Root 10.3.1.A.2.67 / 10.3.1.A.2.74 and many others

キューブキューブ @ cubeundcube created root tool for Xperia Z C6603 10.3.1.A.2.67 and many other devices.
His root tools uses two exploit - one is master key exploit (bug 9950697), another one is CVE-2013-6282.
No internet connection is required.
Xperia Z C6603/C6602 10.3.1.A.2.67 / 10.3.1.A.2.74 / 10.3.1.A.0.244
(Other confirmed devices: Thread in Cross-Device Development)
Z 10.4.B.0.569 couldn't be rooted with both exploit, so these root tools cannot be used with newer devices/firmwares than Z1 .257.
--- bug 9950697 ---
You can download root tool from Japanese website,
http://cubeundcube.blogspot.jp/2013/11/xperiarootz-so-02e-so-04e.html
find "rootkitZ_20131112.zip" and download.
--- CVE-2013-6282 ---
You can download from this tweet.
https://mobile.twitter.com/cubeundcube/status/409191968795680770
*** Setup adb and enable USB debugging and Unknown Sources ***
Extract zip and run install.bat and follow the instructions.
If your device reboot and cmd says "完了しました" or "--- all finished ---", rooting is done.

Is this another fly-by-night app like Kingoroot? Does it need internet connection to do the root exploit (and probably connect to the Mother Ship, somewhere in China)? If does, then it'll get banned by the forum admins. This Kingo Root app has been trying every sneaky underhand method to enter into this forum.......

Didn't you download it?
It's not exe and uses one master key exploit.
No internet connection is required.
I did. Didn't use it AS yet. Maybe I'll try it on the wife's Xperia ZL and check....(sandboxed, just in case)..... Amy source codes /gits available? What exploit does it use?

It uses master key exploit (bug 9950697).
There is no source, but you can open ***.sh with text editor and decompile ***.apk and see smali.
Works!
Does it without internet connection. Avira does not find the zip package or the unzipped root folder/files within as malicious or suspicious.
Great find OP, and thanks for this thread.

I have downloded this files, It seems legit. this method is somewhat similar to Doomlords method, however this uses 3rd masterkey Bug to root, while doomlord used 2nd masterkey bug, if i am not wrong. Accordingly this should work in most of the devices as none of the manufacturers have fixed this Masterkey bug.
works great , thanks
working...
thanks man,
works like charm on my c6602 4.2.2 10.3.1.A.2.67
OK so this works. But sure as hell made me worry as to WTF was it doing, based on the DOS command prompt box output... Seems to be written for output in Japanese Script.
Didi it first in sandboxed mode and second time rooted with WiFi and Internet OffF. Avira found no malicious scripts, and the firewall detected no ports being used by the programme.
Attached Screnshot, which was confusing, to say the least...
I reflashed stock rom using SUS and updated apps using TB (after rooting, as in above post with screenshot). However, after rebooting, I got a very curious error message (seems to be a multiple google activation ID restore by TB). Anyone experienced this before, and what's the solution?

Never seen such an error. So u rooted successfully. without any problems, however you got an error after returning to stock?? now thats interesting? You can fix it if you have TWRP recovery Installed by fixing permission as per various threads only TWRP method works and not CWM. and would you check bootloader status in service menu?
Bootloader status is Unlockable. Hovever running on Locked Bootloader (Not Unlocked from Sony, DRM & BE still available).
How do you remove root? In SU app there is option to remove it, is this safe? Will factory reset remove it? Thanks in advanced.

Factory reset won't remove root. you can either flash stock Rom or use the option in su. If you don't mind losing data it's better to flash

not working for me
Hmmm. I installed the Sony developer drivers found here:
http://developer.sonymobile.com/downloads/drivers/
I downloaded the rootkit and replaced install.bat with the English version.
I enable Developer mode by tapping build number 7-times...
but still I am stuck at "Waiting for device ..."
Ideas?

Please try original install.bat to determine cause of this problem is install.bat or not.
Also run "adb kill-server" in command line or stop adb.exe in task manager and tyr again.
