Screen casting, or the lack thereof - Google Chromecast

Why the filth-flarn-flarn-filth can't i cast the screen of my Android to my (stock) Chromecast yet, as announced?
I have a S4 (jflte), listed as supported. Running latest Omniron nightly (and up to date SuperSU, but that shouldn't matter), and i tried the following;
- update CC app to 1.7.4 from Android File Host
- update gapps to 20140708 and then to 20140716 in the hope Play Services would fix it
- reboot and factory reset chromecast until my fingers bled
- edited build.prop to appear as a hammerhead device, as advised by @murdoch1 in a different thread
- uninstalled CC app, rebooted
- re-installed Playstore version of CC app (also 1.7.4, now)
Please advise!

I don't know much about Omniron but all ROMs have things that have been removed/are missing, because the developer thought it makes the rom better/faster and they might have removed something with the functionality. Have you tried testing from a different rom? Maybe a TW ROM?

That, i have not. didn't think that would be related, because the casting is initiated from the CC app and not from System>Display.
And i've been on Omni since the first official release for jflte.
Edit. I seriously had to look up what you ment by TW:silly:. If that what it takes i'll live without...

Most likely it's something to do with your phone's ROM. Like Miracast, Chromecast screen casting is dependent on both the device itself and the ROM, and it might depend on kernel/bootloader too. We don't know exactly what hardware/software components Google has leveraged to make this happen.
The only 100% guaranteed working configurations consist of:
Supported phone/tablet
Stock ROM on phone/tablet (root or not shouldn't matter)
Build 17xxx or newer on Chromecast (stock or rooted shouldn't matter as long as build is proper version)
Updated Google Play Services
Chromecast 1.7.4 app (not required in some cases)

For the rest of the class, TW = TouchWiz = Samsung stock ROM (took me a while to figure that out too )

It's not as absurd as you would think. I own a Galaxy note II, and I have to use custom versions of Touchwiz so that I can get the S-pen to work, and all other "Note specific" applications.

HOWEVER... it's still listed as not available for my Xoom LTE. Not sure if they forgot to check the box for this model. If someone can get the new tablet friendly APK out there, I'd be obliged. I've already submitted a message to Hulu support.
i was able to install it on my xoom.

i have no clue how to do that.
It's good to know how to do it, programs like ASTRO File Manager or App Backup & Restore can backup the apps installed on your phone or tablet as APK files, which can be installed on any device. It doesn't back up app data (You need root and Titanium Backup for that), but it's great if you want to save old versions of apps in case someone releases a bad update, or if you want to copy them to a device that doesn't have the Android Market or something like that.
Then you stick 'em on some sort of site that lets people download 'em.
Installed fine, however getting DRM not supported error...
I'm running EOS ICS on my CDMA Verizon Xoom, and no dice. I installed it on my Transformer, no problem. Used Astro to backup the apk; however, it says its private and won't allow me to. I've tried to install from the device and the web based play store. No go.
I don't think it's compatible with ICS yet, because my Galaxy Nexus is also non-supported; however, I have ICS on my Nexus S and it installed just fine, so...idk
Runs on my xoom just fine.

Im using market update version -
As of last night, my Xoom LTE could install the app off the Play Store. I could also start a video, but the connection wasn't great it seemed, and I got a network error after like fifteen seconds.
It seems like the only people who have gotten the official app to work on their Xoom, are people with the 4G LTE Xoom. Although, it does not say it will only work on 4G LTE in the Google Play app store, there seems to be a pattern. I wonder if a build.prop edit could fix the issue?

Why should I root ?

Kind of confused on the benefit of rooting. What will I get out of it? Will the root be good for ever or can Google do some thing to break root or brick it?
Are there any other mods out there besides rooting?

Rooting allows you to be able to stream a lot more content to your chromecast, that alone is worth while to root!

You can run non-Google-sanctioned apps, which give you more capabilities.
Good forever? No guarantee, but as long as you load PwnedCast as the first thing you do, your root will be preserved, as PwnedCast will only push you pre-rooted updates. However, at some point in time Google could release a new update that is not rootable for some reason, I suppose.
Regarding mods, all current mods require root.

No. Not unless the application that casts to Chromecast requires root, which currently isn't the case for anything I know of (nothing requires that low-level access to the client side).

A stock Chromecast won't run an application that isn't whitelisted.
Oversimplified, it's like an application directory lookup. If the application isn't in the Google application directory, it doesn't get run.
The KyoCast mod gets around this by allowing additional whitelisting beyond the official Google whitelist.

does it automatically disable google OTA updates or is that another file i have to install.
also will it automatically push the newer pwned updates?

It gets updates from its own server, preserving root.
Yes it is safe to put online.

It's not an option, it's built into the PwnedCast firmware, otherwise everyone running PwnedCast would lose root.
Allcast and Fling will work with PwnedCast v1.1 onward, as long as you have the correct Allcast and Fling versions.
Kyocast was an add-on, it is now built into the PwnedCast v1.1 firmware.

Flashcast build updated through google

Hi.. When I first got my chromecast I immediately flashed it with flashcast.. I didn't check updates/roms after doing this, so I have used the chromecast flashed with flashcast several times, and it has updated itself.. When I look at the Chromecast build in my IOS app it shows as 13330 or something. Now, my question is... can I still update the Flashcast software to the latest version, and put a rom on it? Is there anything I can do with the chromecast with it being updated, etc.. thank you for help.

Flashcast itself is just a tool that (once setup using the Chromecast) can be used to flash a custom ROM. Flashcast itself is not a ROM and does not root your Chromecast or prevent it from updating. Do you know what ROM you initially flashed using Flashcast? If you did not actually take the next step of using Flashcast to flash a rooted, no-update ROM, then it is not currently possible to root your updated Chromecast or flash a custom ROM. (If you are still on 13300, that does make me wonder if you might have installed a custom ROM because Google has released 2 newer builds OTA since 13300 that you should have received by now if the CC is connected to the Internet.)

Flashcast was/is the first of two steps and the second was to install the ROM which roots the CC. It won't accept a Google update then. If you did both steps your good but if you only did the first step your stuck. I'm guessing that you did both steps as your CC would have the latest Google build by now.
Well, when I plug my chrome cast in the TV and it boots, it does show a google chrome icon with a 'pwned' in red next to it, but I am not sure if that is from when I just tried to add Eureka Rom to chromecast today. Yeah, if it says PWNED that means you are using my old PwnedCast ROM, which was before Eureka-ROM was released. if you leave the device on for 10~ minutes, it should check for an update from the team server, and self-update to the latest Eureka-ROM Release, unless you disabled the OTA service. In that case, you will have to flash Eureka-ROM manually using the latest flashcast, and a jump drive.

Can someone help point me in the direction of getting Netflix to work on this tablet. Its super irritating that I paid for the tablet, I pay for Netflix and I pay for my internet connection. They block rooted devices? That is bogus.

It's not that simple they block rooted devices now. You have to mask your device im not sure how to because it running 5.1.2 and nexus rom i got there with flash fire. I tried flashing magisk and it screwed up the tablet so bad i had to reflash everything

Yeah, I knew that . You are certainly not the first nor last to equate Play Store listing/delisting with availability/functionality/usability on a particular device, ROM, etc. Mainstream media doesn't help with screaming headlines and inaccurate reporting. Netflix will likely close this hole in a future update (ie: do an actual SafetyNet test vs simply delisting in Play Store). For now a simple download from APK Mirror or other trusted source gets around the 'problem'.

[Magisk Module] Nexus 6 Angler Widevine Libs

A Magisk module that adds Angler widevine libs to Nexus 6 custom ROMs. This allows video/audio playback with the current version of the Netflix app. (Probably other video apps as well.)
This is my first Magisk module, so it's probably going to need a little "polish". That said, installing a module after flashing a new ROM is a whole lot quicker than manually copying and setting permissions on the needed files.
Files included in module:
/system/vendor/firmware/widevine.b00
/system/vendor/firmware/widevine.b01
/system/vendor/firmware/widevine.b02
/system/vendor/firmware/widevine.b03
/system/vendor/firmware/widevine.mdt
/system/vendor/lib/libdrmfs.so
/system/vendor/lib/libdrmtime.so
/system/vendor/lib/mediadrm/libwvdrmengine.so
I've tested on LineageOS (official download) and crDroid (personal build) and had working video / audio playback on both.
Awesome bro... thanks for your work. Will try it and report back.
Cheers!

According to "DRM Info" the security level is "L3" which is only SD quality. It would be nice to get HD at some point, but it's only a 6" screen, and I never noticed....
As for the list of files, I need to do some looking (to provide proper credit). A few weeks ago I was digging around the forum and noticed a couple of the ROMs had working DRM video playback, which eventually lead me to github and a commit the had the list. First time, I just added to my device set permissions and it worked. Since I like to re-flash my N6 quite often (back-up phone), I figured why not make up a Magisk module to make this easier...
Oddly enough, doing a fresh install of LOS, DRM Info shows "L1" and Netflix starts fine, but then hangs on "Loading..." when trying to play a video.

Its reported as L1 via the drm info app from playstore, the netflix subscription I have is only sd. I can test for you if you have a way to really test it without changing my subscription.
