How to blaze browsing and still have javascript on demand - Galaxy Tab S General

Javascript slows your browser down, way down. This is true on any device, Touchwiz enabled devices especially. So what to do? Disabling Javascript will speed things up (dramatically) but then you hate missing all of the cool things javascript allows you to do such as view certain videos, use drop down menus, activate buttons, access special content - the list goes on.
Turning Javascript off in settings and then re-enabling it when you need it doesn't work because it is a multistep hassle. If only there were a way to leave Javascript off by default and then when you reach a page where you need it, turn it back on on the fly?
Well, if you use Dolphin Browser there is and it's pretty simple. Just create a gesture for enabling/disabling javascript. When you get to a site where you need it, click the little gesture button on the menu bar, draw your gesture and refresh. And there you go, Javascript is back on and ready to use.
If this all sounds like a pain, just try browsing with Javascript disabled. It is almost hard to believe how quickly pages load. In my honest opinion, the extra small step is very worth it.
Here's a quick video demonstrating this is action:

I'd like to try this, but how do you program the gesture?

It's easy. First download Dolphin Browser. Then click the little gesture button on the menu bar. It looks like a finger inside a circle. Once that opens, click the little setup button that looks like a gear at the top right. Select more actions, scroll to the bottom of the list and pick enable javascript. Create your gesture and save it.
Stick with something simple Dolphin won't confuse with existing gestures.

Thanks, all done!

Let me know if it seems to work for you.

Huge difference to me
I tried doing multiple tests with this and no doubt about it. Disabling javascript speeds up browsing immensly. Both in chrome and in dolphin. I used the test site ign.com which has tons of things loading at the same time. I noticed several banners that would take longer to load with java enabled. Once i turned it off they did not load and it sped things up. I dont know if there are gestures in Chrome but i will use Dolphin more. I do hope this gets fixed. No excuse for this these days!

Well its not a matter so much of getting fixed but the nature of how javascript works. Without javascript present websites can load multiple things in parallel making it much faster. Javascript sort of breaks that hence the slowdown. IMHO opinion this is even worse in Touchwiz than vanilla Android due to security filtering but that is just conjecture on my part. Regardless, most users don't need what javascript offers on all websites, especially if you just want to look at pictures and read. All this little trick allows you to do is blaze around until you need the extra functionality and then quickly enable it on demand if you like. IMHO overall a better experience.
Give Dolphin a chance. The new Beta (you have to sign up) is pretty quick and the swipe in from the left bookmarks is convenient. I also like Maxthon but not sure if they do gestures. Will need to check that.
** Make sure after enabling/disabling you refresh the page. That's important.

I second those who have noticed a massive improvement with js turned off. It's night and day really.
For now I just leave it off and use chrome. If I NEED it, I will enable it in the options. But so far, I seem to do okay without it mostly.

Just wanted to check in and say this set up world really well, thanks op.

Glad it helped. Sounds like no big deal but it really does make things faster and easier.

You should keep an eye on Atlas Web Bowser, as you can save your java setting on a per site basis, so you could have it off by default and on for those that really require it.
Its currently beta and still has some issues and its not for everyone as its very minimalist.

Google Chrome

Anyone else interested in this browser? It looks like it will kick ass and who knows they might make a mobile app for it...outside of Android.
Reading your post using it now.
I will give it a go, but I do like Firefox.
opera been ok for me 7 years now on pc
and a few on pda
I've been using it for about 30mins now, it has some quirks but overall speed is the fastest I have seen in a long time.
Check out the cartoon about it:
http://www.google.com/googlebooks/chrome/
Just installed it on my HTC Shift, and it seems pretty good so far.
Regards,
Dave
Yea it is really fast. I like it.
Maybe in the future could be a good option, but now in Beta... I´ll stick to Opera.
There is no options to personalize, change color, etc, speed is good but not as good as they anounce
Don´t let go with Ads mates! Google want´s all the "Internet World", at least they have to pay us for that!!
Cheers,
it is fast though..but cant replace my Opera..no support for Emails so useless..but it has some fetures which makes it a lil nices
I've tried on my Acer One, and it works very fast, both to launch, and to open web pages. It is very low memory consuming, so i think it will be my preferred browser.
My problem with Opera is it's unstable nature with certain sites, especially older forums. Sometimes it can be a major PITA.
I downloaded it last night, it seems much faster than Firefox. I didn't know there were so many ads on some of the forums I visit I'll stick with Firefox so I don't see the ads.
** This morning I noticed that GoogleUpdate tried to access the internet about 12 times last night. This was with Chrome closed!! I don't give any programs access to the internet for updates.
I have found a problem with Chrome and vBulletin boards like XDA.
It is incorrectly turning DST ON in Eastern Australia making all times out by an hour.
In
User Control Panel
Setting DST Correction option to [Always Off] works around the problem for now. Something amiss in the Chrome javascript engine perhaps?
Without making this change whenever I switch between IE or Chrome with a vBulletin board I get an auto DST update message. IE time is correct. Chrome is wrong.
Anyone else wee this?
You might want to check the EULA a little closer there. It is definitely a boilerplate with some wide ranging implications of they enforced it. It also has a number of bugs, such as a carpet bombing vulnerability right off the get go. Nice idea and if they were to put a decent EULA on it, I might use it.... In the mean time, I'll stick with SeaMonkey or Opera.
-Will
IM USING IT RIGHT NOW!!!
It PWNS!!!
The EULA agreement has already been debunked just check section 9.4....here is how another user explained it:
Actually this is pretty flawed. I know this was posted in MANY other places as well, and I can't write to the authors of ALL those posts, but here's where copypasta news and blog entries have their flaws.
If you read section 9.4 closely, you'll see what I mean:
9.4 Other than the limited license set forth in Section 11, Google acknowledges and agrees that it obtains no right, title or interest from you (or your licensors) under these Terms in or to any Content that you submit, post, transmit or display on, or through, the Services, including any intellectual property rights which subsist in that Content
That "limited license" it refers to is what has exploded onto the internet as a violation of rights, privacy, etc. Again, if you actually read section 11, you'll see that the limited license is only for the promotion of Chrome, and this only holds to things that aren't already covered under other rights, such as copyright or intellectual property. Basically, this boils down to: Google can use anything that is online to promote itself, if one of it's users accesses that site. Which, in all honesty, it could do anyway.
This doesn't violate anything. And if you're still scared of it, use Chromium, the active open source project without the EULA that Chrome is based on.

As for bugs. I have noticed the DST bug, also it seems spell correction doesn't work on some boards I post on. Other then that it's the best browser I prefer.

I uninstalled it yesterday. After installation it was still trying to access the internet via GoogleUpdate. I went through the registry and there were tons of references to googleupdates and chrome. I deleted all of them and haven't had any more requests. Wow, don't think I'll even reinstall it in the future just for that.
Theres some kind of memory leak
Whenever i run it
My CPU usage shoots WAY UP
Its fast but dam should it be taxing my processor like that
Cool browser
I love it, been using it for about a week now LOL. But there is still a lot of work needs to be done!
Google Chrome is so much faster on many websites, especially on XDA-developers.com, where it is seconds faster when switching between pages in the forum.
And by using privoxy on newspapers, etc., you can get rid of those annoying ads with ease.

Google Chrome

Hey everyone,
What are your thoughts about the new browser?
Have you clicked the "make default" button?
How would you like to try one out on a mobile device?
Hello,
Chrome, by itself, is really good to use, initially i was not comfortable with the idea for google collecting data about my surfing habbits, but further reading suggests that almost all browsers do "call home" its not something that is really special with Chrome and defenitely not what some websites try to portray...
I am sure Google knows enough about my surfing habits without having the google toolbar and chrome installed
dammit, i just want to visit some sites which they won't know about....hmmm...maybe won't know about...
So, no "make default" yet, I'm eagerly trying out the new firefox 3.1 beta...
On the mob, yeah sure, 'cauz my mobile browsing is quite limited...
To make it clear, I, for one, have made the switch... Using Chrome as Default, there are still many areas they need to cover, but my biggest concern at the moment is Bookmarks. Firefox and Opera have great Sync features, Chrome has none. That's a real pain, considering the whole Cloud phylosophy which Google understands all too well..
Downloading is another area...
Being a big Google fan I'm prepared to live with this version, but not sure if it's ready for mainstream.
I imagined Chrome to be updated quite often, but that's not the case at all.
I'm definitely using Chrome full time. I've had to go back to Firefox a couple times for certain plugins (specifically media rippers, to pull FLV files off video sites) but hopefully Chrome will open up to third parties soon.
I think it´s too "Beta" now
Maybe in a couple of years could be a good candidate, but now still too young and limited.
I´ll stick to Opera meantime
Cheers,
I have been using Chrome every now n then but not 'default'. It does look promising but will take time to mature like Firefox 3. Firefox simply rocks.
Aparently they have this policy that everything you upload using google chrome is now considered theirs.. or so I've been told...
I enjoy a certain level of privacy. So....im sticking to FF on the PC (except when IE is required) and Opera on WM6.1+
@Mikeeey: Nope. They resolved that a while ago. They used a general TOS agreement that was pretty blanket and covered a number of services (to save on writing up different legal agreements every time). They forgot that the wording was sort of bad in this particular case and have since changed it. Everything you do under Chrome is yours, as expected.
@Zeezee: What do you mean by privacy? Because they track usage?
I really like Google products, but Chrome just doesn't cut it against FireFox or Maxthon. I've grown very accustomed to certain plug-ins and/or features in FireFox and Maxthon that I just can't part with.
I'm absolutely loving Chrome. So speedy.
Still lacks a couple of things I liked from FF, but I'm not going back.
/defaults it.
Oh - and regarding privacy - I figure Our-Googley-Overlords already know most of my browsing habits, seeing as I use Google to search for everything anyway.

Why you say this?
Can you extend your opinion please?
I've always hated FF and was an IE user.
I find Chrome screws up sometimes on streaming videos, but other than that, I use it all the time.
IE7 would crash on me daily, not any more. The ultimate browser for me would be some sort of Chrome-IE8 hybrid.

Eink [NST] Optimizations (Apps, launchers, SetCPU...)

So there are a few threads of apps that plain work on the NST, but I want apps that are optimized (i.e. black and white/no animations/useable). Below are my findings.
Battery drain
First off, let's say you've rooted and installed some basics gapps. I found that some things seems to cause some pretty fierce battery drain (I remember on my G1 that calendar sync was buggy, resulting in constant syncing attempts and bad battery drain). Now this is on a per-user basis, but I basically removed everything but the core gapps files and gmail. Here's a list of stuff you can "safely" remove (remember, ALWAYS backup).

Launchers
I've tried them all, but the ADW with the minimalistic black theme is the best IMO. You can make the background white of the app drawer, remove all but one page, and turn off everything that moves (I set all the options to max/0 to ensure that I do not see any animations of any sort).

So depending on how you achieved root, you may or may not have button savior installed. I didn't want extra stuff cluttering up my screen, so I removed it. For those of you who want a high contrast eink button savior, you've got it here. Buy the pro and support the dev. If you want to use the hardware buttons, you have to get this (which you may already have if you have rooted via Nooter).
I set the top left button as back, top right as menu, bottom left as pagedown, and bottom right as pageup. The page up and page down are from the normal left side, so they appear as LEFT_PAGEDOWN and LEFT_PAGERIGHT. I also disabled the BN menu when you press the N and made it just go to ADW.

Apps
Sorry to disappoint, but since I want to get rid of as many distractions as possible, I only have a few:
Android PDF Reader: Has optimizations for eink devices, is quick to redraw, and page up and down work.
Sparse RSS: I've been working with the dev and have gotten page up/down to work. I have a dev build if interested, but I'm sure he'll publish an update soon with it working on the market (1.3.1 does not work, but the next version should have the fix).
Some of the other random eink optimized apps floating around the Apps section here.
SetCPU: Allows for changing the governor and you can underclock if you wish. I have to 600 MHz, and it's fine for reading. I setup the scale up preference to 80, and the Powersaving Bias to 300. Feel free to look up and mess around with these...it's pretty safe.
Coolreader: Has some nice eink optimized settings (can change how the page is partially refreshed/how often/etc. You can also set it as the main reader app in the NookSimple Tools apps, so when you click the book in the top left if opens Coolreader. The standard BN library and reader aren't bad, though (except for PDFs that are not meant for reflow, like tech. documents).

Hi,
Here is a NST optimized (and slightly customized) version I did for Simon Tatham's Puzzles Collection (including source).
github.com/marspeople/sgtpuzzles/downloads
ace7196, could you post the "page up/down" patch for Sparse RSS? Also, I've noticed a interface bug (also present in NewsRob) when you go back to the article list, it loses which list position it was previously, that is pretty annoying.
Here's the latest release dev build of Sparse RSS.
I know the left side buttons for page up/down are mapped, not sure if he mapped the right side equivalent as well.
Also, I've noticed on a few rss readers (as mentioned above) that once you touch the screen and make is scroll, the titles of the articles change, but not that content. I only plan on using the hard keys, so now that I have an RSS reader that works with that...
What is the checkbox under Feed URL when you're adding a feed? Other than that, seems to work great!

Installed it on my phone, turns out it's "Only Sync over Wifi". Kind of a useless setting for us Nookies, but it's good to know I guess.
Sparse RSS is really great though the right buttons are not mapped.
Also, is there a way to remove the "Goto link" bar at the bottom of each page?
It blocks the last line of text on every page. It is also kind of distracting and I will never need to go to the full page or use the onscreen touch buttons since the buttons are mapped
Got email from the author that right button support will be added, and will be published this week (will let you know when).

I'm finding Relaunch as optimized launcher.
I'm happy with it, give it a spin.
(well you might need to spend some time in enabling adb to install non market apps)
I've attached the screens (not screenshots taken in nook, but a pic by phone)
the home, app list and the settings

Anyone happen to have an APK kicking around for this eink optimized version of Simon Tatham's Puzzle Collection that MarsPeople made so long ago? I've been using the regular version for years and just ignoring about half the puzzles since they require color. It would be great to have an eink version.
I contacted the author, but he doesn't have an APK anymore. He did point me to his other GitHub, which is still up and has his modified forkof the source, but no APK. I don't have any environment for building Android apps and I don't relish trying to set one up for Eclaire.

edit: I screwed up the upload - it only uploaded around 1MB instead of 16MB - fixed now
What do you think of it, performance-wise?
Love it! :-D
Edit: 'till now ;-)
It was posted in the Themes and Apps sectino - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1485686
Running great!!
I compared several pages and it the stock browser still feels like it scrolls smoother and loads considerably faster.
This IS a beta though so improvements in this regard are inevitable.
The fact that there is no Flash support hurts it just a bit too. Once Flash is completely eradicated from the web(I can't wait for that to happen, such a completely inefficient, performance hogging format) it'll be a non-issue though.
going to try this out now. thanks for heads up

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to change user-agent to desktop.
chrome://flags/ doesn't work. Some of the other chrome:// commands do, none of them have the option to change user-agent.
Does not load or have option to load pages in desktop mode. What is the point in a browser for tablets that loads pages as if they where on a phone.

In fairness, most web developers are taking a shortcut and assuming anything with "android" in the user-agent string is mobile instead of asking the browser for screen dimensions. This is bad but common practice.
The way which was finally added in the ICS browser to work around this is to change the user-agent string platform info to X11 instead of Android.
When you "request desktop site" this is what happens.
Site thinks is mobile: (Linux; U; Android 4.0.3; en-us; Build/ITL41F)
Site thinks is desktop: (X11; Linux x86_64)
This is an inelegant hack. (Though I am surprised it's missing from Chrome for Android)
Ideally, web developers will clue into the existence of tablets and properly handle things.
I find the stock ICS browser to be smoother and more fluid for me....

When people still design sites/apps for IE6 I wouldn't hold my breath.
Agreed with others here. Stock feels faster and smoother.
IMO its a terrible beta. No user string, no flash, bookmarks are terrible, colour theme doesn't fit with ICS..
Also, why does it exist? If it's only for ICS and above, why didn't they replace stock browser with it? I thought stock android browser was web kit and chrome based anyway.

Funnily enough, Chrome relys on the stock browser for half its settings

I installed it. Went to a few sites. Said cool. And now I'm back to using the stock browser.
I like it because my chrome bookmarks now sync, the feature never worked in Honeycomb or with the new ICS browser and I had to use the chromemarks app as a work around.
Its quite fast to use but it still needs a lot of work, flash, themes and extensions would be nice lolz

I think its not bad for a beta been using it on my phone for a few days now... Remember beta here.. We cant expect everything from your desktop onto your mobile device right now as with google they are going to add features as time comes... Personally i would like to see extentions work but most people would be like that

When i first downloaded chrome i used it a little then went back to ics + because i thought chrome was akward and hard to close tabs. I missed quick controls right off the bat because they are pretty ingenious and intuitive. Well since then i have only used chrome. I only use ics+ when i need to view flash. Chrome is fast, although it takes some effort to close tabs and open new ones. I can't wait for an update and all the things that are obvious (extensions, flash, quick controls). I love how android is growing up. I feel like a proud father watching it go from a small phone ui to now on the brink of blossoming out to all areas of life. By that i mean throughout our homes i.e. Google home integration. I don't think Google has any plans to support flash though with this browser. The HTML YouTube in this browser is fast an non buggy. I'm sure Google wants to keep their browser flash free so they can monopolize web m.
I think I have to agree with you, I've gone back to the ICS browser because it's better designed for touch screen devices. Chrome beta is quite fiddly to use with your fingers! lolz

New browser

Hi!
Im looking for a new browser for my P9. Been trying a few but it seems like all of them are missing important requirements that i want.
The browser should contain:
-AdBlock (that actually works)
-When closing the browser and start it again, it should start from default page and not the last visited.
-Incognito always on. Not necessary if theres a option to clear history when closing the app.
-Battery friendly
Dolphin is probably the choice, but i just cant seem to like it on Android. On iPhone it was pretty good.
Is there a option out there?
On PC and Android only Opera(Opera not Opera mini).
Opera is like chrome but dont suck so much resources and it have few handy features like: Compression mode, Build in AdBock AND VPN mode.
But best part is Battery life, compared to Chrome, no matter if its PC or Android you can get even 30-40% more time on it.
Also it have sync mode so you can browse sites on PC and finish it on Phone.
Sadly recent update literally F up look of Opera, but if you didnt use it before, you should not notice that, but I would suggest to switch to tablet view in settings, its WAY more comfortable to use it(even better if you change DPI in programming settings of phone to 320-380)
I would suggest giving it a try for week or two, with both on PC and Phone and after that you will notice how bad Chrome was in terms of performance and battery life.
Thanks for your reply.
I remember i used Opera on a old Android and was happy with it. Must say, i kinda like the new look of it. But is it not possible to remove the news feed? Also, the ad block doesnt work very well. And when closing Opera and starting it again it takes me to the last viewed page. Also, no incognito mode.
I am using Brave Browser, fastest than any others and as simple than chrome. AdBlock included.
No lag on the scrolling and it used the last chromium engine.
You can disable the startup page.

Well it has night mode, it's super fast so no need to make it heavy with themes and other stuff.. Adblock built in, I think it's quite perfect
Opera HAVE incognito mode, and it show last visited site.
Incognito mode( its called "private" mode). It can be enabled by just clicking windows icon in phone mode, or in tablet mode: options icon in right corner->create new private tab.
As far as keeping last visited site. Hard to tell why you dont get it, because its one of features that I HATE personally, and its annoy me because opera always open last visited site AND all tabs in background.
Also feed main site can be changed to normal mode just by going to options and changing option: "set feed site as homepage" to disabled.
I'm using Dolphin browser on Android (P9) and I'm satisfied. It has all I need.
Have you looked at Nova browser. It seems quite popular with some P9 users.
