It's so parents have something to distract their kids with. But then really parents should be giving their attention to their kids.
You are right though the last time I gave my tablet to my niece to play with she step on it and broke the screen.

For me the question is : is their toys is a galaxy tab s at 4 years old... what will they ask at 8, 10, etc...
For me it is unbelievable to leave a nextgen phone/tab to a little child...
It would be good to teach them the value of the money...

i have a Moto Razr and Razr HD that my 3 and 5 year old use and i limit it to a few hours every couple days and no using in my truck unless its a long trip.
i have them both in cool kids protective cases so no worries there.
i REALY wish there was something as nice as the Kids Mode in a 3rd party app but with updates and then having to repick default launcher etc etc the 3rd party are just not that good.
i use a KitKat Launcher that i keep it on Airplane mode and have the stuff they can use on the home screens that infinite scroll and there is no app drawer or taskbar so you have to have a unique swipe to get to app drawer and setting for occasional app updates etc..
i also disabled hardware buttons and replaced with onscreen and that helped a LOT!
anyway not exactly on point but related

My 2 year old plays with learning apps on my old Ipad2 for no more than 30 min about every other day. She's learning while typically I'm preparing her dinner while the wife is at work still. If she breaks it, I'm not going to weep over it.

Should I go with Nook??

Okay guys I currently do not own a Nook Color, I have been reading about it and how it can be rooted and used as regular tablet, and I have also been reading about the resetting problems. The question is would you recommend me buying one or should I spent a few more dollars and go with a regular tablet??
Thank you.
I actually pulled the trigger yesterday and am having zip problems after rooting it and using it constantly. If you follow the direction on the nookdev website and read through all the threads for workarounds for xlcommon problems, it's perfect. For me, spareparts and setcpu with seam launcher with root explorer, its a pretty sweet tablet. Also, Cyanogen mod 7 is worked on right now.. so I'd say buy it!! Galaxy tab is just thick and awkward.

Short answer, yes. I was worried about the rebooting/resetting problems as well, and so far it's been perfect.
I had it in my hand and I liked the way it felt in my hand. I liked the design better than the Galaxy Tab. The price is just perfect. So I been thinking about getting one. How long does the battery last with mild use? I remember reading 8 hours but I know that's not true on real live basis.
It really depends on how much you want to spend and how much time you want to spend modifying your tab. Seeing as you're posting here I would guess that you have at least a minimum desire to tweak whatever you get.
I got the NC a week ago and I have had a lot of fun rooting, modifying, and trying to screw it up. So far it has been very forgiving and I am learning new stuff as I go.
I say yes, go for it unless you need a camera, GPS, or bluetooth (may be coming soon).
HTH!
If money is not an issue for you.....wait a couple months and grab one of the new tablets hitting the market like a Xoom, G Slate, or whatever.
If you're on a budget, the Nook Color is a nice alternative. But there are quality issues (many a Nook Color has been returned) and it requires you to tinker with the device quite a bit. If you enjoy that process it's a great device.

Camera, GPS are not needed since I own a Vibrant. And yes I am a flashaholic I love flashing ROMs and tweaking as much as I can. So this does sound tasty :]
8 hours is about right. Of course if you play alot games and videos it will kill more battery. But it's not going to go from 8 hours to 1 hour from playing music, internet, games.
Yeah, reading, email and light web browsing 8 hours.
Yes yes yes.
The best $272.00 dollars (with taxes) I've spent on the last 2 years. It's about to cause me a divorce. My wife can't stand me with my eyes on the Nookie all day.

My husband is sorry he got me a Nook for Christmas
...although he was quite pleased last night when I told him I couldn't sleep with my Nook anymore, since I guess I have to charge it sometimes! Seriously, the Nook is AMAZING and it is painless to root. I rooted my Nook a few days after Christmas and was scared to death that I was going to break it, but got brave because I wanted both my NookBooks and Kindle books on the same device. I've installed apps, downloaded more NookBooks and haven't had any issues (not even the dreaded reboot). I LOVE my Nook!
The NC has the best screen under $500. And, from my research, it's appears to have better stability than some of the tempting off-brand tablets out there. (though there appears to be some QC issues).
I was soooo ready to get an IPAD, saw the Nook in a store, and wow, the 7 inch form factor just made sense!
The build quality is solid, and like the previous poster said, it's very forgiving, and a joy to tweak.
Best 250 I have spent in a long time!
Thank you'
Joe

Welcome to the nook color club. I have had one from the beginning and love it. So far two friends have also purchased one after seeing mine. Had to root it for them. Great buy for the price. Hope you enjoy it.
I have gone for days without charging with light use....
I will pick one up if they get the bluetooth stack working. I really would love to sync a bluetooth gps to the nook! I need something cheap so i can take on my trip to europe to book hostels/trains at night!

[Q] Spectral Souls

Has anyone tried downloading this and running it on their Gtabs? just checked today and they had a new update that allows for tegra 2 support. I've had my eye on this game for quite some time but was reluctant due to the lack of tegra 2 support and the small disclaimer/known issue in the description that said "could not work & crash on 'uncertified' Google Android devices like Archos Tablet, Nook, etc".
So before i go psycho on my wallet and spend +/- 15 usd on this thing, I need someone who owns a Gtab, and was brave enough to buy this game, to confirm compatibility and if so, list down known issues based on experience. Thanks again xda peeps!

i must be getting rusty w/ my searching skills but so far the only threads i've seen about the game are for non tegra 2 devices (NC, Dell Streak, phones, etc) so really somewhat of an "apples and oranges" type of comparison. anyway just checking if anyone who owns the Gtab specifically have tried this game out lately... but no rush (considering that the update was just rolled out less than 24 hrs ago). eagerly awaiting for some first-hand insights!
Just noticed it this morning too. Good chance that I will try it this evening. I honestly don't see why it would crash on the nook though. If all else fails, I still have my Captivate to play it on. It did look nice on the g-tab when I watched it on youtube. I can say this, if your a fan of classic rpgs the sound track alone will blow you away, at least all of what I heard.
I took the $15.00 plunge this morning. The game has a 1 GB download for game data, so you're going to go well beyond the 15 minute refund limit. On the other hand, you gotta love any program that simulates Pong while the download is being counted down.
Once the download is complete, I'll let you know. Looks like it's gonna' take a couple of hours as I'm running this off a EVO hotspot.

looking forward to your impressions of the game -especially those very noticeable pros and cons! i've been a long standing fan of classic JSRPG's ever since i first played final fantasy tactics a long while back and have been left hooked ever since (even enjoyed 2D JSRPG's with mediocre-to-crappy graphics)

The download continues...and Pong is suddenly less fun to watch than it was in my youth. About 1/3 of the way home....
Winner!
Download is done....and Pong now totally sucks. Anyway, bottom line is.....it works. While I haven't had a chance to go too far into the the game, I can tell you that the soundtrack and graphics are both top notch! Is it worth $15.00? Yes.....yes it is if you're into this kind of game.
If you were waiting to buy this but were worried about it running on the GTab, I say go for it. Mind you, I'm on Vegan 5.1.1 so I can't talk about any other ROM.

[game talk] Paradise Island

I've been playing Paradise island for about a week now.
I'm loving it.
So thought I would share some tips and hopefully get some back.
Currently I am level 12.
When starting the game best things to do.
build 40 roads ( or 400 if you are bored)
This gives you a free $1250 plus 40xp
leave the screen on for 3
This gives you $5000
Plant 5 flowers ( costs $1500)
gives you $3000 plus 200 XP
Move your first buildings 20 times
gives you £1500 and 50xp
This means you start the game with an extra $9250 and 290xp
Once you are high enough level get a business centre you get 1 of the special money every day save that up for expansions.
Odd achievements
Do 5 things in a moment.
I spent ages trying to collect money as fast as i could.
For this you need to pay the extra and do a instant build.
Secret achievements I have
Stop the hum/rumble ( cant remember the name it changes once you get it)
move to solar power only.
Hotdog fan
$4000 200xp
Build 15 hotdog stands
Atristocrat
Build 3 golf clubs at the same time
$75000 1250xp
We remember about the defender
Build two hold defenders simultaneously
$30000 and 1500xp
Hope people can add to this and it doesn't just get lost in the void.
thanks for the tips
I have also started playing the game recently but got bored by having to move those buildings and making roads
Will try your tips

Also hotdog stands are great at the start only give you $70 but you get one XP every 2 mins. So.have like 10 and you will level up much faster.

To add to the "hidden message" in the OP:
If you use the system clock to advance the time, you will notice that if you advance it a week, you have to wait a week for the game to catch up to it before you can play normally again. However, there is a way around this.
All you have to do is put something in storage and place it back on the map. Once you do that, the clock resets on that building and you don't have to wait for the game to catch up to the date that you advanced it to. However, you would have to place every individual building in storage and back on the map in order to reset everything on the map. This can get annoying once you expand a few regions and you have a bunch of buildings, so keep that in mind.

I had a back-up done with Titanium Backup that allowed me to restore the previous version. Coincidentally enough, I had done a backup the day before the new version came out, so I was able to restore it hardly lose any progress I had made.
Yay me!
Started playing yesterday. You have to spend a lot of time at the beginning. I'm lvl8 now and just built the business center and the galaxy restaurant (improving atm). Now I want to get rid of all those "fast money makers" so I can check every hour to collect my money and thats it I moved tree's like an idiot lol, but I got the skillfull designer achievement. now I have to move another 1k facilities, LOL!
question about "the sun only"-achievement:
If I get rid of all my windmill's and build a solar power plant for 60k I'll get the achivement + 200k? seems very fair to me and what if I rebuild some windmills afterwards? will I lose 200k?^^

bang bang racing in Tegra market today for $7.99!

Hey Xoomers, Bang Bang racing is now in the Tegra zone market....enjoy!!! They originally told me it'll be out next week, better now than later!!
UPDATE: The developer has listened to our comments an will add new control options in a future update to the game, resembling the controls like Reckless Racing! The current controls are not bad once you get used to them...love the graphics though
Its in Tegra Appstore now but no link in market. Hopefully its up soon.

Doesn't have any multiplayer option. For 7.99 it should have multiplayer
Is it good?
This will probably be my first purchase from Market. Yesterday Google finally enabled paid apps for 99 more countries, including the country where I live.
I bought the game about an hour ago. I am not a fan of the control system. I was hoping it would grow on me but after an hour it still isn't great. I hope they incorporate something better in an update.

What are the controls like? Tilt/Sensor or touchscreen?
[edit] decided to give it a go, dissapointing for £4.90, refunded it The control system is odd, dragging my finger in front of the car to dictate where it should go, at the same time obscuring my own view, isn't fun :/

Got this... doesn't really disappoint. The control scheme as-is (luckily there's a more traditional one coming) isn't half bad, but takes a lot to get used to.
There's no practice mode though. I ended up using Time Trial as my practice. Not a bad start.
I bought it, played for 5 minutes and gave up in disgust at the controls. But, I figured that I'd let them keep the eight bucks rather than take the refund since I want to support people that make games for the Xoom.
Played it again later for about 20 minutes and started to get the hang of the controls. At this point I was having fun even though the controls were still frustrating, so I decided to run down to Best Buy and spend $20 on a stylus. The controls are WAY better with the stylus keeping my big hands out of the way and preventing my hands from getting sweaty so that they stick to the screen.
Love the game now. As an added benefit, the stylus is pretty cool in its own right and now I'm awesome at Fruit Ninja, too.

Childproof Nexus 7

Our kids are using the N7 and I wondered how I could go about making it a good tool for them to learn on (games, letters, numbers etc.) but at the same time hide/restrict the more grown-up stuff, like email, maps and all the other stuff they won't have need of at this time.
I figured I can make a folder for all their games and learning apps, but has anyone got any ideas of how I can tweak the unit so when they use it, it will be "barebones" for them but still allow me access to the full features if the need arises. The unit is predominately for the kids so I won't need access that much. It would be great that once they switch it on, all they see is "their" stuff. Ideas...?
Thanks
As far as the "child proofing" goes, definitely get a good case and screen protector, maybe even something that they can put around their wrist when they hold it so they don't drop it as much.
To hide apps, download something like Apex Launcher and go to the drawer settings, it has a way to hide any installed app.
You could also install Avast! Anti virus. I think that has a way to block certain websites from being accessed and and also includes features to find the device when lost and lock certain apps.
There is also a new launcher coming out called Chameleon that looks a lot more straight forward for a kid to use. The launcher also includes pages of apps that change the feel of the device.

If you press the All Apps icon then touch and hold an icon for a built-in app, you can drag it up onto an Info icon. As well as showing you info about the app, it allows you to disable it. So you can install only 'safe' apps and disable 'non-safe' apps', including the Play Store.
Then all you have to do is make sure they don't have access to the Tapatalk app in case they read this post...

I have the same problem my grandson is coming over for the weekend so I'm going to test this out https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sp.protector.free

The Play Store definitely has some child-proofing available.
If you're on the more nerdy side, you could actually root the device, set it up how you like it, then either make the Market and other offending apps invisible, or lock access to them.
Just depends on how far you want to go. Something tells me that the Play Store child-proofing may be enough.
There is an app called Switch Me. Basically it lets you configure multiple profiles by setting up a new /data partition for each one allowing you to restrict access to certain apps and so on and even have multiple Google accounts setup for each user. You should check out out.

I would also look at Switchme to set up different user profiles.
EDIT: damn, evonc beat me to it by a few minutes. LOL

Ideas...?

I use applock on my kids' tablets. N7 is daddy's.

I bought my 5 year old an original Samsung Galaxy tab 7" and he is autistic so went through a throwing phase when he first started getting into electronics, like when he'd lose in a game. Anyway we have just a silicon case for it and it has with held the torture of all time and it is still in great shape. He even threw it off a second story balcony and it landed on a hardwood floor... bouncing afterward... but still chugging. No dents or scratches or defects. Thing is a champ.
While the Nexus 7 is a little thinner, I figured I'd reply anyway. GET A CASE.... and a screen protector. The Galaxy tab is a stout device but let's hope the Nexus 7 is AS good if not better. It feels solid.
I just got mine after lots of torturing myself that my Transformer was sufficient, but I must say the more I use it the more I like it.

I've been using an app called Kids Place for my 20 month old twins. Works great! It's like a home replacement and you can choose the apps available.

You could look into the Fuhu Nabi 2 that I read about recently. It is basically a nexus 7 without JB (runs ICS), built in protection, and defaults to kids mode (the dad mode is a normal android). 8GB for $199

Child proof it by buying them something else.

No, not child proofing the nexus 7, but instead a "Childproof Nexus 7", as the title says, which is basically what that device seems to be. Though this would not help anybody who already has a Nexus 7, it may help somebody looking for a Nexus 7 type device for their child.

Thanks for the link to my blog. As for OP's problem of rendering the "original" Nexus 7 child proof, it's technically doable by "borrowing" ROM from rooted Fuhu Nabi 2. Naturally, presenting the kid an original Fuhu Nabi 2 and taking back an original "adult" Nexus 7 would be more practical.
Pfft! Just don't let your kids use it. Make them go outside and build tree houses, play with an abacus or read encyclopaedias. 80s *****!
I also agree on getting the nabi2 its a really nice device. My 2 year old never killed her nabi1 and the 2 seems even more solid. She has thrown both of them and took a crayon (washable) to it and wild off with no marks or scratches on th screen.
The only issue I have is no root on it, but its nice and quick. Screen is not as nice as my Nexus7, but it has microsd slot and HDMI port. I hear someone rooted one but Fuhu asked them not to release how, so if anyone hears about root please post it here on the forums. I thought about trying the root tool for nexus but she loves it too much for me to risk it.

Subscribed... I too am looking for a way to root the Nabi 2... i really would like to get the Google Play Store installed on this thing since I have a lot of apps already purchased through there...

Them Fuhuans can ask anybody anything, XDA-Devs is a free-rooting country. I think the race is on already, to turn Nabi 2 into a chewable/droppable N7 with SD slot/HDMI. My guess the N7 and Nabi 2 are twin brothers (ASUS 370T being their dad), so a "standard" N7 rooting tool will work. If not at the first attempt, then with some minor tweak.
I'm following Nabi 2 (and Furbi 2) progress in my blog closely, so you're welcome there. Can't guarantee being exclusive bearer of the news though....

I think you saw my other post about that guy and Fuhu. I tried a genetic tool. I was going to try with the nexus one, but Nabi is ICS not jellybean so did not want to risk it. Same boat, my kid loves it.
Also we got the glow in the dark bumper from fuhu with our VIP Gold upgrade, the new bumpers are bigger and thicker so should take a fall better. Just letting you know, not sure how rough you're kid is with it.
