So I'm trying to find out some technical information for the M8. I'm in the market for an SD card. There are different read and write speeds on the Sandisk cards. What is the theoretical maximum speed that the M8 would benefit from. Such as loading games and running media off of it. Is there one or in the real world, would I literally not notice the difference between an Ultra card and Extreme Plus card?
Wouldn't notice the difference. Speeds vary between same cards anyways so it is also luck of the draw.

you probably wouldn't notice much as far as loading media. That said I did get one of the sandisks and noticed improved transfer speeds. I was too used to using the internal memory on my Gnex and for the month I used an S3 before the m8 I was getting sick of the slow card I had.
As far as between the extreme and ultra I can't tell you.
Whatever card you do buy, make sure not to buy it on eBay. The majority of them on there are counterfeits.

Up to 70 MB/s! People say real world up to 20 MB/s writes and 60 MB/s reads, which is great for a MicroSD card.

You *can* use exFAT cards in the M8, but you will have to be rooted and running a custom kernel that supports exFAT (I believe there is only one such kernel or possibly two). Otherwise, you need to reformat the 128g card as FAT32. Since my current kernel does not support exFAT, I'm using the 64g until I need the space.

Yeah i couldve sworn my sandisk 128gb is formatted exfat. 64gb can be formatted exfat also. I think the big difference is trying to move a file larger than 4gb to fat32 is a problem. Exfat is fine. I wonder what f2fs would be like for SD cards though.

I ran Codecraft's kernels for a while and they support exFAT. Currently running scrosler's "stock" modified kernel which supports init.d and it specifically states that it does NOT support exFAT. I haven't gotten to a point where the 4g limitation is meaningful, though.
I have a few... Like 15. Kingston, Transcend, Samsung and SanDisk. 8GB to 128GB. Most are 16-32GB. All rated Class 10, but some rated 95Mbps and lower. In general usage, I don't feel any difference.

Those who are using the Sandisk 128gb card, would you say it's fast enough to set as the destination for pictures and video? I'm thinking of getting one and moving my photo and video destination to the external, but I'm worried that the shutter speed (and video quality) will suffer because of it.
I've left the cam to internal NAND but I tend to use the 32-64GB typically. I've only used the 128GB on two outings and it worked fine although it was nearly empty. It mostly goes in my XS-1.

As long as its Class 10, it should be fine. And it looks like all 128 GB MicroSD cards from Sandisk are Class 10, UHS-1.
I have a Class 10, UHS-1 Sandisk card (although only 32 GB) and it takes video and Zoes (those would be the most speed intensive) seamlessly as well as pics.

The biggest size available currently is 32GB.
I don't know if even more is possible with microSDHC or if bigger cards will only be possible with SD3.0 (aka SDXC) but that question is not relevant as you can't buy any greater then 32GB yet.
The Class of the SDCard is a measurement for guaranteed minimum speed in random read/write.
The Class does not provide any information about real-world speed or max speed.
For your mobile phone the class is a pretty useless criterion as you don't need any guaranteed minimum speeds but good overall speeds ESPECIALLY sequential.
The guaranteed minimum speed is important for HD Video Cameras for example where you write data all the time at a given speed (resolution).

Don't pick uSD card based on class !! class tels you MB/s for sequential write only... you need a card that is overall fast, I had 16GB class 10 Kingston and data2ext was just horrible!

i purchased a kingston 8GB class 4 which crapped out. android kept reported sdcard unexpectedly removed. tried all sorts (formatting in windows, android, quick, long, etc).
RMA replacement did exactly the same, so i'm guessing kingston class 4's are best avoided.
If I recall correctly I have a 16GB microSDHC Class 4 card. After applying data2ext with this card, my Quadrant scores hit around 1500, which is crazy.

class 6 is better , but class 10 is even better
I've got a Sandisk Ultra Mobile 16gb SDHC which works fine in the Legend. Make sure you format it with the phone to stop it being dismounted, well known issue and the fix

What I do when I run out of space is find out what flashable zips I'm currently using and keep those. Then I put the rest of them onto my computer in case I need them later. No need to keep every single zip I've ever used on my SD card.
Also GoogleMusic saves a lot of space that would normally be taken up by all my music.

yeah i already use google music and backup .zip's on my PC... however i do a bit of downloading with my phone + usually keep tv shows/movies (720P) on it as i am away from home frequently and use my phone as my source of entertainment. i'm tempted to just go and buy one of those 64GB cards and try it out but if it doesn't work i'd hope the store will allow me to get a refund on the card.

Anyone tried this cheaper Kingmax card? The Sandisk card I'd guess has less room for problems, but it's a lot more money, and I only see them available from Sandisk directly without paying an additional $80 ($299 on Amazon).

Go with MicroSD. There is no difference between them, except the fact that SD card won't fit and moddying the phone to force it in - is generally not a very good idea.
Well, there are three differences:
1) Size: Regular SDXC available to 128 GB, mSDXC 64 GB only
2) Speed: Regular SDXC up to class16, mSDXC class6
3) Pricing: Regular SDXC are cheaper than mSDXC
It's your choice...I choose the 64 GB mSDXC from SanDisk (cos no modification is necessary)

I read somewhere there is no added benefit on using over class 10 sd card on a mobile phone. Actually Class 6 is more than enough according to some benchmarks. Sorry I cannot quote right now.

If you need more than 59,46 GB for music, movies etc you should get a regular SDXC.

What make and model 64GB card are you using?
I just bought a 64GB SanDisk Class 10 that comes formatted exFAT (curse Microsoft with their damned proprietary filesystem and convincing gullible vendors to license it. I'm looking at you Sharp). I stuck it in the Atrix HD and formatted it when prompted at first boot with it in. It was mounted for a bit, but I couldn't write to it and whenever I launched Settings and selected Storage Settings would crash. I just re-partitioned and reformatted it FAT32 in my laptop using a combination of diskpart and Acronis DiskDirector 11 Home. At the moment I am waiting for my files from my old Lexar to be copied to it before I stick it in the Atrix HD again. Will suck if the HD has problems with this card. Can't complain about the brand as SanDisk is one of the inventors of SD cards, including MicroSD.
I'll report back what my experience is.
I thought the Atrix HD was only compatible with SDHC cards (thus 32 GB maximum capacity).
The cards that are 64 GB (and higher) are SDXC, and not compatible.

Yeah, it isn't just the reviews; Motorola's specs state "Up to 32 GB microSD," but as was pointed out before what they really mean is MicroSDHC cards. However, as these are all extensions of the SD format one would hope that SDXC cards would work. I've seen a few other reports of people using 64GB cards with the HD w/o problems. I'm just curious as to what has been the experience of the people here as they are generally a good deal more tech savvy than on the other forums.
So far the only hiccup I've had is that it wouldn't format the card. Also twice I've tried to unmount and then remount the card, after which the phone thought the card had mounted, but it wouldn't use it. A reboot fixed this each time.

I formatted my card in my phone, put it in my pc and copied 33GB of mp3s, then copied the stuff from off of my old card 23GB, then some tv shows. I watched the tv shows from my phone, deleted mp3s and recorded a movie. I have yet to unmount and remount.

Of course it will work, but be careful with sandisk sd cards, they have tendency to lose connection with phone... Non HC cards are max. 2GB, so they are rather trash comparing to HC, or XC (64 GB) cards

microSDXC technically maxes out at 2048 GB (2 TB). Also, I've never encountered this disconnection problem people keep talking about. Using a 64 GB SanDisk microSDXC in my phone. If yours does, I would recommend you take it back to the retailer to swap it out.

In 4.2.2 changelog sony writes that Z has officially support for 64GB SDXC cards... In 4.1 as i heard you can also use them without any bugs

Lies, all lies, the reason behind the lies was that most 64GB microSDXC cards come pre-formatted to exFAT, and if people have used them in something else, sticking them in Android would cause them to be formatted, making users lose data. So they said "we don't support 64GB cards", even when theoretically the reader won't have any problems with 2048GB cards assuming such cards existed. OK, I don't know for a fact that 2TB cards would work (hard when they don't exist ), but a 256GB card likely wont cause any trouble for example. There was a guy who stuck a microSD to SD adapter in his Note II and used a 256GB SD card with that. Most likely the same will work on an XZ as the readers are quite indifferent to capacity as long as the cards adhere to a common format (in this case the SDXC standard). Obviously a microSD to SD adapter isn't practical with the XZ, but when larger cards come out they should work flawlessly in the XZ, as long as they are SDXC cards.
In 4.2. Sony added support for exFAT, since then the formatting problem wont occur so they thought it was safe enough to announce support I guess.
It annoys me a little when device specifications indicate a maximum filesystem size, because I know that is only dependant on which SD standard is in use (SDHC only supports up to 32GB) and on the filesystems available to the operating system. Really, when looking at device specifications, what should be indicated is which SD standards are accepted by the phone, and not the largest size the manufacturer has tested.

It will still work, you'll just have to format it to FAT32 prior to using it. I would suggest backing up and formatting to exFAT again once the 4.2.2 update drops for T-Mobile, considering the benefits of that filesystem such as filesizes >4.5GB and better Unicode support.

If nothing else, the faster card will be MUCH quicker to backup into something which does support UHS-1 speeds, like most laptops and ultrabooks do these days.
