Keywords - Analytics

Does anyone have any tips and tricks on how to go about keyword research for ASO for a mobile game we are developing?

Here are two resources to check out.
The first is an overview of ASO. It covers keyword guidelines and best practices, and has some tools to check out. To sum it up: The trick is to pick relevant keywords that have low competition and high searches. It’s better to choose average-searched keywords and show up higher in the search results than pick highly searched keywords (like “game”) and show up as the last result. (It's easier than it sounds, I swear.) Visit blog. kiip. me/developers/app-store-optimization-aso/ (minus the spaces)
The second resource is a breakdown of MobileDevHQ, a tool for ASO. I can say as a non-MobileDevHQ employee that it's definitely worth trying out. The breakdown walks you through the tactics that the Android gaming app 7x7 used for keyword optimization. Visit blog. kiip. me/developers/how-a-puzzle-app-got-to-the-top-of-strategy-searches-on-google-play/ (minus the spaces)
If you have any other questions, let me know and I'll help you out.

You may try to use typical web search service (not only Google, most have such functions): write to the search request some keywords you know about your app, and then look for the info about typical search requests which are used with the keywords you typed.
For example, you may use Yandex.com service "Wordstat".

There are also great websites like Sensor Tower. You can give it a try.

Try to combine AppAnnie with MixRank - that covers all your needs.:good:

You can also try to make your app get reviewed as much as you can.
The reviews and ratings will boost your app into top rank search.

This is a good post about ASO http://mashable.com/2013/07/13/top-selling-app/
Some suggesitions:
1. Get a Feel for the Market
2. Align Your Ideas with Successful Apps
3. Design Your App's Experience
4. Register as a Developer
5. Find Prospective Programmers
6. Sign NDA, Share Your Idea, Hire Your Programmer
7. Start Coding
8. Test Your App
9. Post Your App to the Market
10. Market Your App

You can use MobileDevHQ for finding competitor's keywords

Thanks

One tool I use quite a bit is the AdWords Keyword Planner Tool.
You don't have to have a paid AdWords account to be able to use it; just sign up for AdWords. I'm not sure, but you might have to go through the steps of creating a campaign, etc.
But yeah, once you are in the system, clicking on tools and Keyword Planner at the top will give you a way of seeing keywords.
You need to take the search data with a little bit of salt; I've never seen them being 100% accurate. But, on the whole, I find it a good guideline to what is being searched for and what isn't.

yep, I'd be glad to know that, too

Today I began to use Mobileaction service. It looks promising - keywords statistics, possible competitors and etc..
But I use this service only one day so it is your decision whether to use it or no)
If someone used it, please write something

http://www.appbrain.com/apptimizer
AppTimizer by AppBrain. Shows app keywords, keyword weight in description and user reviews, potential competitors, plus other metrics. No registration required.

We haven't used any tools.
We just analyzed our competition, analyzed what people would search to find our app and just afterwards we decided what the name of our app will be like.
We made sure that the competing apps only have 50,000-100,000 downloads to be sure that they are not big players on Google Play, and that they also give us good traffic because our app would pop up in the "Similar apps" tab.

+1 for Sensor Tower. Like it!

So I need to choose a name for my game that consists of keywords?

Kaiser Software: Learning The Ropes

Hello all. I am a newbie, exciting as that sounds! Anyways, this is my out cry, possibly to some of the major contributors (if possible), maybe even some of the ROM developers out their. My goal is simple...making your life easier, and less stressful with us newbies.
Anyways, here is what I would like to contribute to the forum. I would like to write up a Wiki of free software, and how to install and so forth for XDA-Developers. I would gladly take control of this, link to the downloads and so forth, but would like some help from the seniors here, since I don't really know a ton about this stuff. However, from what I see here (daily for about 4 months) is that generally, the major issues are finding software and what it actually does, and I think this could help a ton! Let me know through PM or this thread if you are interested in helping me out, as well as helping a lot of people out, I would think. I do know the current Wiki does provide a tools review section, but I think a general link location, title, version, release date and brief description page would be helpful.
Much of that work has already been done in the existing Kaiser Wiki. I'm sure that if you wanted to maintain a matrix of software, installation instructions, version numbers, etc. and keep it updated, the powers that be would consider it a worthwhile addition. As for links to the software, many (most?) are already on the Wiki.
i think its a good idea but most of which are already on either the wiki's or stickies...as well as other threads in other sections...much of this wont be needed of people just searched and dig a bit deeper than one page of reading...a lot of answers are out there just need to search harder or refine the search
I do live a lot by the wiki, I just find it to be a bit clumsy, since it is VERY overwhelming, especially from a new person stand point. I was thinking of a simple page, that listed the following, work in progress, let me know what others think first.
Applications
-Name

Would it be big? Probably, but I think it could be very helpful as well.
here's a good place to start:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Must_have_tools
this is linked from the hermes wiki, but most of the software will work on the kaiser too. try looking at the wikis of other devices, and also looking in the software subforum, you will get a good idea of wat ppl use on their kaisers
thanks that is very helpful. This is pretty much what I am looking to start/add to. Let me start working on some stuff and prototype it, also, if I could get some information from some developers, if you do work, and see this post, post me to your stuff, directly with some brief descriptions of it, so I can start looking at it. Thanks all!
this is what I was thinking
Name: HTC Action Screen & HTC Action Screen From Storage Disk
Description: This is a quick access to tasks. Generally placed in the bottom task bar, lets you gain access to things like: New SMS, New Email, New Appointment etc. See Screen Shot.
Language: English
Download Link: Action Screen, Action Screen From SD
Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340803
Latest Version: Unknown
Release Date: Unknown
Developer: HTC
Donation Link: N/A
Known Issues/Fixes: How To Fix Wrong Email, MMS & Contact Shortcut
And so on, kind of an easy format to update and fix up
Don't forget to add classifications. I'd even go so far as to think of this as a searchable database or at least a spreadsheet that can managed as a filtered list. You're looking at dozens of apps to keep track of. From an admin standpoint you'll want to track the last date YOU updated the info as well.
I've done similar projects for companies....it's a pain to manage in a text file.
I like the spreadsheet idea, I think I already have to many other websites being worked on to add another DB to the picture I was also thinking about wiki'ing it as well, which probably would not look pretty in a spreadsheet, but who knows.
Its an excellent idea. I agree with you that it is already available but not in the format you plan on doing.
+1 for the idea; ideal for newcomers and/or folks who have been out of touch for a time.
As for those whe are saying that all this is already available in one form or another: very true, but when you have to dig through hundreds upon hundreds of threads then other hundreds of pages within the thread... Yes, searching, but you have to know what to search for. A vague idea of desired functionality helps, but what if you don't even know of something that could potentially be a life-line for you?
you should probley put in screen shots too. Ya know to make it easier on everyone.
This is an awesome idea. What i really hate is when someone posts a thread full of cabs but with no explanatation as to what they actually do. The worst i find is with all the HTC apps. page after page of "HTC camera", "HTC album", "HTC action screen", it isn't exactly easy to tell from the name what a lot of them do.
ok well we will see you when you're done and I'm sure that will be a couple of years.

I definetly think screen shots would be nice. Sometimes form is just as necessary as function and I'd like to see what I'm going to be working with / not working with.
spring cleaning
I say this site needs some spring cleaning since there's no many versions of this and that to the point it takes lots of time digging and finding whats best for everyone

This already exists. It's been linked in the wiki for ages. In the 'Downloads' section, there are links to external freeware pocketpc sites, which include descriptions and multiple screenshots per application.
Y'all just need to browse the wiki more often and when you find something, link it to the wiki, so it *CAN* be easily found in the future for others.
Hope this helps!

[Q] I want to become a dev.

I'm a creeper on the forums and i look up to you people...and Recently i saw a story on how the number1 iphone app was created by a fourteen year old.
It got me thinking.. and i really want to try this but i have absolutely zero coding experience..
I know it sounds noobish to say but all the devs on this forum had to start somewhere.. they didnt just magically get their talents.
What i'm asking for are tutorials, references, guides, even books, on how to develop android applications from scratch.
Please dont overlook me.. i just want to learn.
I have the android sdk and eclipse set up and linked together.
I even have app inventer.
Any help is appreciated
I'd recommend starting with the tutorials on the Android Developers website http://developer.android.com/resources/index.html. In the left column there are 6 tutorials that are quite good. I'd reccomend doing Hello World, Hello Views, Notepad Tutorial, and save the others for later. After that, your best bet would be to get an idea in your head and go for it. If you have questions the best place to ask is on IRC in #android-dev. Outside of that, google is your best friend. Just search for what you want to do.
Hope this helps!
Tutorials are usually a good way to learn what you can start doing.
After you get some basics and know how to search for certain functions/commands, then you can start thinking about what type of app you want.
A lot of books (I just glanced over them at the bookstore) suggested thinking of what you want the app to do and then designing the general User Interface on paper. And after the UI is in your mind, you can start programming.
thanks to both of you for the help really appreciate it.. people seem to ignore the noobs but anybody can learn.
ill put my ideas on paper first.
And ChainsDD what is the IRC in #android dev?
IRC is internet relay chat. To quote Wikipedia:
Wikipedia said:
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a popular[citation needed] form of real-time Internet text messaging (chat) or synchronous conferencing.[1] It is mainly designed for group communication in discussion forums, called channels,[2] but also allows one-to-one communication via private message[3] as well as chat and data transfer (including file sharing).[4]

There are many clients out there to connect to it, but I believe that XChat is cross-platform and quite good. Here's the website for it. The quick start guide on that page will get you online, but choose freenode as your network, as that's where #android-dev is. There's also #android for general android discussions, and #android-root for root discussions.
I would recommend you to start with the basics. With that I mean Java applications for the command window. It's easy to set up and use to learn basic stuff like data types, operators and class structures. Search for "basic java programming" or likewise and you will find a lot of good (and bad) tutorials.
For example: Java tutorial for beginners - Introduction
When you have learned to write a simple program in Java use the Android tutorials to learn how to use Google's Java libraries. The three tutorials ChainsDD mentioned are a good start.

Not all of us
Real Dev's code in Python (j/k)
But they all stated good things - pretty much pick a programming language and start from there. If it's Android development it is going to be Java (ugh).
If your serious about wanting to develop? I would recommend C++ as the language to get involved with. From there it is easy to branch off to other languages.
There is a TON of free material on the internet (that isn't pirated even) to help you get started. Compilers, code samples, documentation.. there is virtually no limit to the amount of data that is out there.
The trick is... A) to figure out what you want to do and B) remained focus on your goals and keep working at it. Coding is NOT easy (I can't code my way out of a wet paperbag - but I understand it) but can be very rewarding both personally and financially
So good luck!

Hi, looking for developer feedback

Hello,
My name is Isaac and I am here to find out what developers and publishers find useful as far as reviews of their mobile applications. I have just finished developing a website that totally caters smartphone applications. It is non-platform specific so if you develop for Iphone, Droid, blackberry, etc.. then your apps could be listed at the site.
What I am looking to get out of this is to find out what information developers want to get from end users the most. This way I can configure the review site so it can get the most useful information to developers. Thus giving developers the info they need to concentrate on what is more important to their target audience.
So I hope some of this interest and lets get talking, what are important questions you like to see answered in reviews
come on guys, help me out, what are things that you found most important when getting reviews of your applications?
If someone reviewed my mobile app, I'd like to know about a couple of things like:
Ease of use,
Functionality,
If usage of app can provide a longterm solution,
and/or if the user was satisfied with the app all around.

Hi,
First of all before developing any application, I check the user requirement. As you know people want different type of applications. So I collect the user opinion from different places. Then I develop an application according to user requirement. After completing the application, I post my application reviews on different mobile based forums and get some feedback.

So basically if you have an idea for an app you then question potential users for what they would like to see and then build something from that?
Any particular questions you post on the forums that you feel gives you best info?
I always look for a decent star rating from those before me and also read through the developer description. If it seems useful I get it and worse case you just end up deleting it later. The main thing that makes an app flourish in the market is it's star rating and number of downloads.
But honestly, there are already several similar sites. I guess it will be really hard for you to build a big user base for your website. Other players are already in the market for a few years. And they are all free...
Maybe it is a better approach that the devs do not have to upload the app to you page but that you just allow the users to "request features" and you can allow them to vote for features. This could provide a feedback to the developer of the most important missing/demanded features. Maybe there is a chance to contact the developers via one of the google apis for marketplace once you have significant feedback from your users for a specific application...

Yes there are many similar sites, mostly concentrating on a particular platform though. Which to me makes no sense since a lot of developers want to make apps for different platforms . But you make a good point allow users to vote on proposed features that the developer is thinking of working on so they know what users really want and would likely buy for.

[Q] Learn Java - need Tutorials written for Android Studio, instead of Eclipse

I want to learn Java for the purpose of programing Android. I aim to (in my opinion) fix the obvious and glaring faults of the Android OS that make the OS un-desktop friendly for 10 inch Tablet users. LOL..
I notice lots of good places to learn Java for free like the java-made-easy.com site or Udemy.com BUT most if not all of these use the Eclipse IDE and This is my problem. Now that Google has released Android Studio Stable back in December and is encouraging folks to switch to it as the new official IDE - where does this leave a newbie like me? - I cannot find any tutorials for learning Java that are actually designed to work with Android Studio.
This would leave me having to use Eclipse and I am worried if I learn this method I will not be able to transfer my work to Android Studio as well worried I'll be learning an outdated tool/system - if so I'd have to relearn Android Studio's way of doing things that differ from Eclipse... seems like a waste of time.. doing double work.
What should I do? Am I stuck between a rock and a hard place picking the worst time to try to learn Java?
I don't wanna learn the Eclipse way if it's going to be obsolete but there are no tutorials for learning java with Android Studio yet - or are there and I'm just missing them?
Looking forward to your answers, Thank you.

What IDE does it use? I cant tell from the webpage. They have a 14 day trial and then it's $1.99 a month there after.
IDE is Android Studio.
You can register as free account, unless you want to join "assessments required for certification" program or coaching. Checkout the "Terms of service" in sign up dialog. register as "attendee" .
As for what courses do they have, click on "View Courses" in start page.

I attempted to sign up for the free course (Intro to Java Programming - https://www.udacity.com/course/cs046) But there was no option to "join "assessments required for certification" program or coaching" that would have been any different from a "free" account.
In other words your post led me to believe that you could take and complete the whole course for free just without the certification or coaching options - it doesn't look that way. They only type of account I see offered is the 14 day trial. Plus they ask for a credit card, and they are not getting my info. I cannot find an option to only register as an "attendee".
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anyone else know of any tutorials for free that are designed to work with the new stable version of Android Studio?
It's a regret you can't find the right way to get start! I'll try to explain more clearly.
Most of the courses in Udacity have two choice : "Enrolling in a Course" and "Accessing course material". Select the former means you willing to join the paid course program, hence you got asking credit card etc., In your case, you should select "Accessing course material" which's right below "Enrolling in a Course" and it's the free one.
While some course like "How to use Git and GitHub", you can only see "Accessing course material", see the different?
You should also read "Help and FAQ" to get a better idea of how it work.
I'll look again when I have more time tonight. . --> Thanks.
I signed in with Google instead of registering manually, perhaps that's why I didn't see the options you speak of. :cyclops:
wow, a cyclops. I never saw that one before LOL
Your question is not specific, it's hard to understand what you really want to know. If you don't have programming experience and want this job to be done by someone else, I can make this app for you. All graphic assets must be provided by you.
Hello I need some advice or help on android studio plug in. I actually received an e mail I will just Copy it here :
EMAIL :
Dear Android developer,
We invite you to participate in a research study being conducted at Saarland University in Germany. We found your email address as a professional developer on Google Play.
We have developed FixDroid, an Android Studio plugin to help you learn about different aspects of software security. We're excited to be able to share this with you!
FixDroid helps you to learn more about secure coding. As you write code it finds insecure practices and warns you about them. In some cases it will offer you more secure alternatives as a QuickFix.
FixDroid is, and will remain, free to use and we're delighted if you can use it. In return we'll collect anonymous information about your use of it - but never any of your code or anything to identify you or the code. Please visit https://userstudies.cs.uni-saarland.de/fixdroid/installFixDroid.html to get access to the plugin.
While you try it out, if you've time, please could you possibly participate in a brief scientific study to help us improve FixDroid for you and other users?
