[ROM] VanirAOSP [official] [N5100 / N5110 / N5120] [5.1.1] organized, clean, fast. - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Original Android Developm

Welcome to VanirAOSP. Our mission is to deliver a clean optimized version of Android to as many devices as possible. This is not a kang rom. You will find versions of the features you love that we've rewritten and improved on plus a few we wrote ourselves. we've tried to achieve a more organized and cohesive setup to improve the user experience while correcting any performance regressions and improving functionality.
You will not find customizations that are done just because someone figured out how to do them. Everything in here has a purpose and is held to a high standard of coding. Our ROM is build with linaro toolchain and global -O3 -fstrict-aliasing so everything will feel snappy and super smooth.
General features:
stock mode - ability revert to stock AOSP code with the exception of a few custom features we chose to keep active

I haven't seen anything wrong with it.

Two major issues that I have noticed so far. One, it does not see my 5.0 Ghz Wifi network. Two, I am seeing download speeds of like 300 Kb/sec from the play store on my 2.4 Ghz network, and Speedtest at about 7 Mb/s. I have a 60 Mb/sec connection and have no issues with any other devices, or this device with the stock ROM. I understand that 2.4 Ghz is slower than 5.0, but not that much slower.

Did you do a full wipe? Device? I just tested and it connects to my 5.0 GHz Wifi connection perfectly fine with 2.2 MB/s speeds from the play store (downloaded Temple Run 2 as a test).
Edit: Sorry I just realized my wifi is not 5 ghz. I only have the 2.4 ghz connection. Can you provide a log? I'm going to talk to the core devs to see if its a known bug that exists on all devices..

Is the sound problem on incoming calls solved in this ROM for N5100?

Which one of your kernels would you recommend to use with this rom if we want over clocking capabilities? I like to run mine between 1.72 and 1.8ghz., and just love your kernels.

Should be. Uses CM's trees. I have made no modifications.

Unfortunately, I have temporarily discontinued them so proceed at your own caution. I mainly do not have the time to continue them and / or resources test them since my Note 8 is a family shared device now. I'm still planning to continue them sometime in the future when I have more time and resources. If you want to use I guess make backups before and test all of them.

This is my favorite Rom for all my previous devices. Thank you.

Are people getting the blur effect to work?
Second issue. Immersive mode disables status bar but leaves the black space in its place

I'm not sure who's fault it is but blur haven't worked well on tablets here. PAC has the same problem for some reason. Both this and PAC are CM based, but I don't know if CM also has the same issue. If not then someone probably derped out while adding more features. And I actually haven't gotten immersive mode to work either

That is unfortunate as your kernel was a nice addition to the roms they were made for. It would be nice to see an AOKP, AOSP, AOSPB or CM style rom made with a kernel built right in it that had over clocking capability.
I will keep an eye on the thread to see if you start working on it again. At this point I am just happy to have access to the quality level of development that we do have here.

Ah..I'm sorry about that. When / if I start again, I'll send you a PM. Just out of curiosity, what ROM do you use as a daily driver?

To be honest, I have this, dirty unicorn and CivZ touchwiz backed up and I restore to the rom I need depending on what I'm doing at the time. CivZ for work as I use the S note extensively, and Vanir lately at home as I am testing with it right now. And I really like Dirty Unicorn for the customization.
I think that Vanir is the smoothest running so far. I can't wait to see where this goes.
But to answer your question, it would be all three of these roms as daily drivers. It only takes 3 to 4 minutes to restore to the one I need.

Sorry, I flashed back to stock. It was unusable as is. But in general, I have noticed that AOSP ROMs have had issues with 5.0 Ghz connections on Samsung devices. That goes for this tablet and my old Galaxy S4. Interestingly, I ran a speed test on 2.4 Ghz that showed about 6 Mb/s, whereas it would only download from the Play Store at about 300 Kb/s. But either way, I have a 60 Mb/s connection over Wifi. I understand that 2.4 Ghz is probably maxed out before 60 Mb/s, but still not at 6 Mb/s.
And yes, full wipe was done. The device is the Wifi only Note 8, 5110

I'm getting problems when I flash this or cm based it won't charge once turned off and only reboots into philz recovery once I plug the device in from off

[KERNELS] Best of the best | .35 | for Newbie | Explanations Guides and Suggestions

This will guide you and teach you too ONLY if you read well rather than just pressing download links!
Now that we had TONS of kernels out there, It doesn't means NEWER = BETTER.
Here you will find useful links to guide on choosing which kernels fits your needs.
This is pointing out and will be guide for those people who dont know what is a KERNEL?
This thread is for those who doesn't know wtf does a kernel is, for those gamers for those on stock roms for those who wants performance for those wants promising benchmark scores etc..
KERNEL? what is it?
In computing, the kernel (from German Kern, nucleus, core) is the main component of most computer operating systems; it is a bridge between applications and the actual data processing done at the hardware level. The kernel's responsibilities include managing the system's resources (the communication between hardware and software components). Usually as a basic component of an operating system, a kernel can provide the lowest-level abstraction layer for the resources (especially processors and I/O devices) that application software must control to perform its function. It typically makes these facilities available to application processes through inter-process communication mechanisms and system calls.

Now that you know what a kernel does, its time to know what VSYNC (Vertical Synchronization) is?
Vertical Synchronization, also called Vertical Sync, or simply VSync for short, was primarily required because of the physical limitations of CRT monitors as discussed in the Refresh Rate section. A CRT monitor has to constantly light up the phosphors on the screen many times per second to maintain an image, and can only do this a certain number of times per second based on how fast the electron gun in the monitor can move. Each time it has to redraw the entire screen again, it moves the electron gun inside the monitor from the bottom of the screen to point to the top left of the screen, ready to 'repaint' all the lines on the screen from top left to bottom right, and back again for the next refresh. The period during which the electron gun moves to the top of the screen for a new refresh is called the Vertical Blanking Interval (VBI).
Enabling VSync tells your graphics card to synchronize its actions with your monitor. That means the graphics card is only allowed to swap its frame buffer and send a new frame to the monitor when the monitor says it is ready to repaint a new screen - i.e. during the VBI. Your graphics card and monitor do not have to be in sync; they can still operate properly when VSync is disabled, however when VSync is disabled, you can experience a phenomenon called Tearing in periods when your graphics card and monitor go out of sync, precisely because the graphics card and monitor are acting without regard for each other's limitations.

Now base on my experience, this are the .35 kernels (never had tried .32 so I cant point out which one is good for me) I personally found out useful and those gave me good experience on stock and custom roms.
NOTE: it doesn't means all of this are BUG free!
For stock rom 2.3 | .35 kernel
Vsync off
The smoothest one i found for stock lg rom|voff gives smoother ui transitions and scrolling
Rome-v1.3.3-cfs-vsync-off by zack here
Vsync on
Best one i tried for von on stock rom
paolo's OC kernel V3 here
you'll find the thread here but most of the links are dead
For custom roms, all cm7 based rom (miui, lewa.etc) and themed roms |.35
Vsync on
best ones i tried that gave me performance and really good experience even on games!
Ta-gb-kernel-v1.1 by thachtunganh: here
Roq kernel-IX by Roqu3: here
Roq kernels (for those who doesnt even give effort to search but rather spam and ask anywhere) here! Newer doesn't mean better
Vsync off
for benchmark HOGS and for games who need further more frames for HQ games
PP kernel v1.7 ta-gb 1.2 based, originaly by thachtunganh moded by trettet here (the best for games so far)
Candied kernels by DJnoXD here (voff with variety of touch fixes also good for heavy games but lesser benchmark scores compared from PP kernel v1.7)
Nice tutorial there

PP kernel 1.7 will give you performance but i dont suggest it on stock cm, may be on GTR but on stock it would only make scrolling sluggish because of screen tearing.

F2FS help: this post/page
- features my own governor 'preservative' with 702MHz touch/GPU activity boost for responsive UI and smooth scrolling
- in kernel hotplugging (thanks to myfluxi)
- debug stuff disabled
- various safe optimisations
- built on the latest 4.4.3 source (no new source was released for 4.4.4)
- offers reduced heat and better better performance through my original bus speed mod: higher bus speeds at lower CPU speeds allows max FPS at lower CPU speeds, and keeping the CPU speed low is the best way to save power. UV is not the way! (Established 'wisdom' debunked here)
- includes kexec-hardboot patch for multiROM thanks Tasssadar
- includes Fast Charge, Gamma, and Audio-gain mods
- support for F2FS and multirom

Objectives
- a high standard of performance
- as power saving as possible, but not compromising the first point
- keeping it simple
- remaining stock-like as much as possible for stability, but I'll add features if I personally want them!
Caveats - Flashing this will void your warranty, and may cause you to grow hairy man boobs, and this is the last thing anyone needs (ladies doubly so). I'm not a developer a such. I can just about program well enough in C to be able to understand what I'm doing. I've taken code from other sources and merged it in. Credit goes to mrg666, myfluxi, morfic, faux123, franciscofranco, hellsgod, ak, stratosk, and of course the hundreds of developers of the linux and android kernel source. I'm so lazy with git that often my commit history gets re-written and the original source of my cherry-picks gets lost. If this is an issue please pm me and I'll try to fix it, otherwise let me be lazy.
I think you should add... - Although I'm happy to hear suggestions, before you start you should be prepared to hear a 'no'. This is a personal project that I'm just sharing.

A simple OP for simple KitKat kernel featuring nearly nothing.
http://d-h.st/LAP
- intellidemand governor with 192MHz min freq and 702MHz optimal freq
- useless frequencies disabled
- 2 core minimum when screen is on
- in kernel hotplugging
- debug stuff disabled
- various safe optimisations (take a look at the rather short commit history on github)
The Goal - to make the minimum changes to the stock source required to make a smooth experience that doesn't bake your hands.
Caveats - Flashing this will void your warranty, and may cause you to grow hairy man boobs. I'm not a developer a such. Why's this in general? - because I'm not really developing anything. This kernel is more like my personal preference for how a kernel should be configured. I reserve the right to change my mind about what I want. I also reserve the right not to change anything for months on end.
I think you should add... - Although I'm happy to hear suggestions, before you start you should be prepared to hear a 'no'. This is a personal project that I'm just sharing.
There are lots of other fast moving and exciting kernels out there. I want this one to be more like a Daiquiri at the beach. Lazy, slow and probably asleep.

Nope to one core. See the updated op for more info.
UV is a big no-no in my eyes. Remember in the nexus s section I did those battery drain measurements? I didn't find any benefit to it, and it can make your device unstable. It's just not worth it

I may have a little mess around with the colours. They look okay to me since kitkat dropped. But while I'm on the subject I think that stratosk had decent colours as default... unless I'm imagining it? Can anyone confirm?

Yeah stock colors (which I believe is what stratosk uses) is decent enough. It's definitely way better than when the Nexus 4 was first released.
In that case I think I'll leave it for now. I'm not looking to blaze through commits like the old days
kernel update, see OP
I've begun the process of merging in the mainline commits, but I'm only merging in patches that apply cleanly, and only if they affect code that's actually being built. There's no point cluttering my git repo with commits for code that isn't going to be built in my kernel! I automated the process a little with a fun script. If you're interested take a look at the head commit in my github/maKKo_02
It took me most of the day today to get from v3.4.0 to v3.4.14 so it'll be quite a long time before I get to v3.4.70 but I'll upload a new version every 10 sets or so...
Here's another one: http://d-h.st/6Kp
I can't stick it in the OP right now because I'm using tapatalk and editing is a pain.
I've merged up to 3.4.16 and taken the hellscore zip as a base to ensure the low fq of 192 is available on first boot.
Edit: I forgot to mention that I switched to xz compression so it's reduced the zip size somewhat
Also, does anyone play sword & sorcery? Is it normal for the back to get so hot on this game?

Did you change from ART to Dalvik? That *might* help... ART is still somewhat unstable, and lags and such depend alot on the kernel you're using. 2.6 is stable but a bit sluggish, 3.1 is faster but hás camera bugs and is battery hungry.
My P990 is better than your Galaxy S, IPhone or any other piece of trash you own!

Some version ago, ART was the default, but there were problems.
I remember that tonyp wrote that ART could give problems.
In last version the default is Dalvik, so it is non necessary to modify.
Thank you for helping me to understand why I have problems and you haven't.

Slimkat options
Hiya,
I was wondering if anyone had any memory options for the current Slimkat, with built in 3.1 kernel (basically out of box settings) that are suitable to keep it running somewhat smooth after a week or so.
The only thing i've been able to do is dumping of the cache, and using the Fstrim command to keep the lag at bay, but this still causes memory drops of some apps, ... like Phone calls being dropped, and keyboard crashing even when I have as much as 40mb of free memory.
I do keep Skype open in the background I need it to keep in contact with someone special. so i've greenified everything else that can be hibernated. except for Viper, and other CPU and kernel managers. ( and ofcourse Skype for above reason)
the phone app crashes alot after one week of use, i don't use other social apps like facebook or whatapp. I only use Skype, and Now browser. with normal Phone and Messaging app.
I may play music sometimes. but when finished I kill the app. allowing everything else to be alright.
anyway. if there is a preferred CPU / Gov / sched / swap / zram combination that is working well for people, I would appreciate some feedback on what works for them, with minimal cache dumping, and memory leaking.
Also. please let me know via PM, if I should post this elsewhere. I'll edit the post and correctly post in the correct thread, without cluttering up the thread.
Thank you.
Necro.
I'm hoping for this info too! Just installed Slimkat and despite it being quick for the first 30 minutes after clean install it gets slower and slower and now even pressing power on can take up to 30 seconds just to get to the lock screen. Yes, it's insane.

Yes you should buy RamExpander and expand your RAM to 1 GB.
And put CPU to 1.2 GHz.
At that settings phone is working great for weeks/months. (tested)

and just have the phone do .. .ya know, .... phone stuff.
but Ramexpander only helps the ram. so its not worth it for me.

We’re really excited to announce that we are releasing our Nougat flavour of Paranoid Android. We have a lot in store - with a mix of both features & improvements.
First & foremost, we have moved our code base to be fully CAF based. This brings many improvements to your device. The key improvement here is that Qualcomm hardware is better tuned on the CAF base and with our additional optimizations we can provide a smooth and fluid user experience that will let you enjoy using your device without any lags.
On first launch you’ll notice a clean setup with a beautiful wallpaper from Hampus Olsson who’s teamed up with us again and created several beautiful pieces of artwork. For those of you who don’t know, Hampus is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work stands itself and we’re glad to have him onboard. We have also added several new features and made improvements to the UI of the system that we believe would enhance the overall experience.
Pie
We’ve been working hard on redesigning this key feature of our portfolio and we’re really happy with how it has turned out. The whole design has been reworked and it fits in well with the overall feel of Google’s Material Design. This gives you the opportunity to use more gesture based control for navigating, rather than using the standard Navigation Bar at the bottom of your screen. Expect improvements and additions in the future.
Color Engine
We’re proud to announce our newest feature - Color Engine. Color Engine allows you to seamlessly change the colors of your device to be in Light, Dark (Pixel) and Black modes with a variety of accent colors to choose from. This makes changing the theme of your device really quick without having to install any extra packages on your device.
Major features:
- Reworked Pie
- Color engine
- Immersive mode
- Buttons customization (including navigation bar)
- On the spot controls (OTS)
Minor features:
- SafetyNet Compatibility
- Battery/Notification LED control
- Recent tasks locking
- Battery icon customization
- Google now page in default launcher
- Substratum (OMS) support (Color engine will be deactivated if you use Substratum)
- Quick pulldown
- Various performance and battery improvements
- Display burn-in protection (for OLED screens)
- Double-tap to sleep
- 3 finger screen shot
- More to explore
Device specific features for the OnePlus X:
- LCD KCAL to improve color accuracy & sound control
- OnePlus X custom camera HAL: Resulting in better picture quality than OEM.
- Offscreen gestures
- Alert slider customization
- aptX and aptXHD support
Device specific performance and battery optimizations:
- Replaced MPDesicion with AutoSMP (improves battery life, and performance)
- Custom thermal implementation that keeps the device cool
- Full audio and video offloading functionality
- Optimized task scheduling
- Much more
Note: Custom kernels are explicitly unsupported and will cause issues
unless they state that they are AOSPA compatible or AOSPA based!

Installation instructions
We highly recommend you follow these instructions very carefully. Users usually tend to skip a few steps and eventually fall in trouble. Are you with me? Good. Let's get this train going. Just a few things to keep in mind first - If you're coming from another ROM/stock, your system data (not internal storage) will have to be wiped. This includes apps, accounts, messages, call logs etc. There's been some users complaining about different GApps variants messing up installs and causing a ton of issues. Upon investigating it seems OpenGapps Mini/Nano work best. Understand that Paranoid Android is a custom ROM and it might lead to addiction as it's relatively good. We shouldn't be accused of anything just in case your cat starts drinking wine. Things get a little woozy in the Paranoid World.
Disclaimer: Some brain power might be involved if things go wrong. Not a lot though. Only as little as to solve 1+1.
Okay let's get to the main bit. We recommend a full wipe.
Flashing order:
1. Back up to PC everything you would need
2. Reboot into TWRP Recovery
3. Format all partitions
4. Flash AOSPA zip
5. Flash GApps zip
6. Reboot System

FAQ
Q: Why don't you support custom kernels?
A:Custom kernels tend to ship with changes to the init that harm UX. We focus on delivering the best experience possible so the out of box experience should not be modified. Not only that, but I ship custom hotplugging and a thermal implementation that other kernels do not support.
Q:VoLTE?
A:No. Don't ask.
Q:Will you support Xposed or any deviation of it?
A:Nope. It is a highly insecure platform that can cause several issues.
Great!!

[OP7PRO] ULTIMATE ROM/KERNEL BENCHMARK Comparison & Discussion - OOS vs AOSP

So, I'm sure many of us have the burning question of which ROM/kernel any of us should use when it comes to pure performance. With so many ROMs out there, ones based on OOS, Havoc, Paranoid Android, crDroid, OmniROM, MIUI, the list just absolutely goes on. I want to use this thread as a way to inform people of any potential performance gains/loss when it comes to choosing a ROM, as well as just a thread to compare/talk about benchmarks in general.
So I've taken the liberty to run five different setups, (I can take some more as requests, if necessary.) and ran A LOT of benchmarks between all of them to see which ROM provides the best performance. These tests include four various games, some synthetic benchmarks, and storage tests. At the end of it all, I ran all the tests with some pretty heavy kernel based performance modifications that gave a surprising amount of performance gains in some scenarios.
The ROM setups I am using are:
Completely Stock (OOS Beta 11 with zero modifications)
Stock OOS Beta 11 but Magisk / xXx NoLimits xXx 10.1 / Data Formatted as F2FS
HavocOS 3.3 Build 3/17 w/ F2FS
Paranoid Android Quartz Beta 5 w/ F2FS
& Paranoid Android Quartz Beta 5 w/ F2FS AND SmurfKernel 3.5.1 rc17 slmk w/ Overclocks Enabled
All benchmarks were ran under the scrcpy ADB screen mirroring software, and under the settings I've used, it's shown to not provide any amount of performance loss. The command/options I've ran are "scrcpy --render-expired-frames -b 2M -m 768". That makes scrcpy not drop any lost frames (which will increase delay but make frame rate recording much more accurate), have a bitrate of 2Mbit/s, and have a screen height of only 768, which is easy for the phone to do while not incurring any performance loss. Game performance was recorded using MSI Afterburner over the scrcpy window, which isn't THE MOST accurate, but is the only option available due to certain apps not being able to be run under OOS (i.e. KFMARK actually offers these features in app, but crashes on OOS.)
So, lets get started, first, with the gaming benchmarks. I've chosen these games because they are the only ones that are intensive enough on the phone's hardware that can run without hitting the game's frame rate cap. The overclocking kernel of choice for these tests are @pappaschlumpf's SmurfKernel, all my settings can be found here.

So, what is the takeaway from all this? Which is the winner of the best performing ROM? I think the short answer is, well, no one. Long answer? It really depends. Currently, I don't think ROMs alone can offer any amount of increase in CPU/GPU, giving any extra gaming performance. That seems to be solely up to the kernel.
At a glance, it may look like Havoc offers an immense increase in gaming performance from looking at all of the benchmarks. However, after checking Kernel Tuner, I actually noticed its kernel overclocks the GPU to 675 MHz, (up from 585).
Strangely, OOS seems to offer better SQLite performance than both other ROMs until some serious kernel tweaking is introduced. It may look like xXx NoLimits xXx gives higher storage based scores, but the gains were due to /data being formatted to F2FS. Thus, it seems like NoLimits provides zero recordable performance difference. Not sure what they mean by Speed/RAM optimized. Maybe it's just purely a debloating and keep-more-apps-in-Ram tool.
CPU scores between all ROMs is all within margin of error. I noticed higher MEM/Storage benchmark scores on AOSPA, as well as slightly faster app install times. However I imagine that comes from the fact that it uses the @arter97 kernel, not due to the ROM itself.
So, with all this said, I think the best ROM to choose is whichever one you feel like has the best features / ability to be a daily driver, not what you think will be better performance. I am personally sticking with Paranoid Android because some others have one or two annoying bugs that they haven't squashed and apps like Reachability Cursor and KFMark work seamlessly on it (unlike OOS).
remarkable

AOSiP is based on pure AOSP and doesn't have any official Android 10 releases, it's still running Pie, so I don't want to waste time getting into it. TreskMod is just another mod of OmniROM, which HavocOS is already largely based from. crDroid looks interesting, so I'm currently running it and trying it out for myself and will update with benchmarks eventually.
for a reliable test, you must flash the same kernel with same settings in all roms, smurf kernel for example works in stock and customs.
You have smurf kernel with forced 90 hz, the same setup must be in all customs and is misconfigured, if you have surfaceflinger boost on, you must disable frame commit boost and viceversa.
how about call of duty mobile game?did you test it out?thanksyou

I know SmurfKernel works on OOS / AOSP, the overclocking benchmarks weren't there to show "Look! SmurfKernel + AOSPA is so much better than others!", it's to show people how much of a difference overclocking can make, for them to make the decision of whether they think SmurfKernel's overclocking is worth flashing for or not. I didn't flash the same kernel to all ROMs because that's not the way the developers intended it to be. If the developers wanted their rom to be best experienced under SmurfKernel, they would have either explicitly stated it or packaged it in with the ROM. For example, the way AOSPA does with arter97's kernel. Flashing Smurf to everything would have defeated the purpose of comparing the ROMs.

I would like to do a battery life test but there are so many variables that would really come down to end user experience that I don't think it would be an accurate representation of the ROM's performance. If there's an app that just constantly drains the battery life, maybe I could try that, but I feel like that would take a really long time to post results for since that would be one ROM's results a day.
Thanks for this. I'm currently running OOS 10.3.1AA with arter97 r54 kernel ?? pretty happy with performance and kernel overall.

PCMark has a battery test which works really well, but it takes like 9 hours to run haha
Would be awesome to see though
Thua far, the absolute smoothest experience Ive had on this phone has been OOS + Smurf + xXx. Without smurf, Ive seen no difference with or without xXx, however with it, the phone is butter smooth, its an enormous difference. Benchmarks on my phone are lower because I keep clocks low to save on battery, however even then the phone blazes through everything. Has a few kinks here and there that are admittedly quite annoying, though, so I am looking into other kernels a bit. Appreciate the post. Ill probably continue avoiding AOSP roms, Oxygen has spoiled me, such a good Rom.

Arter kernel is a rather nippy and no stutters or hickups noticed yet, perhaps give that a whirl!
And how about battery drain ? Sot and idle ?
