GPS Issues - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Having serious troubles with the GPS (I think ever since I upgraded to KitKat). I've tried a couple of ROMs and went back to the stock rooted one found here. I will get a fix at times but it will be lost within a minute or so and makes things very frustrating.
What's the best way to troubleshoot this? I've tried Chartcross GPS test, but it doesn't fix anything. Any help would be really appreciated.

Anybody?

If you google your question you will find loads of the same exact issue. I am also having the same exact issue, it only kind of works on stock rom with no root. But even then not for very long. Samsung decided to put garbage gps radio's in our phones so gps is pretty much non existent on the Note 3. I'm on my 4th phone from ATT. Not only does the GPS suck, the connection losses are pretty unbearable at times and have actually costed me customers. And to think I traded my S5 for this POS....really frustrating.
TLDR: Someone at Samsung needs punched in the face, twice.

Interesting. Mine was working perfectly prior to this whole kitkat ordeal. If I Odin back to stick and reflash to 4.4.2, do you think it will remedy the issue?

That's what i did because I need gps daily, though it still has major issues, I'm literally trying to sell it, my s5 never lost lock, even in my pocket.

Do you think there's any use in ODIN'ng back to stock and then trying the custom 4.4.2 ROMs or is it not going to work?

[Q] Cognition, suddenly unable to send and revieve texts, internet not working well

Hi guys, I started having issues with my SMS this morning. Now, I can't send messages reliably, I'm not sure if I'm receiving them properly now either. On top of that, I am was having issues with 3g, sometimes the icon would not appear at all, and others it would not load web pages or send data via internet enabled apps, i.e. facebook. I must stress that I did not change absolutely anything, and that it just started happening. could this be a flaw with cognition? or is it just AT&T being... well... AT&T?
I assume it's just AT&T being AT&T, I had issues with that exact scenario about a month ago. Cog is working fine for me, but you can always try to backup and re-flash and see if that helps.

If it persists I will re-flash... pain, but what ever. Any-who I'm about to get an inspire 4g anyways so meh.
Thanks for reassuring me that I'm not the only one who has encountered this problem. I tend to have one-in-6-billion luck like that.
Please post in the Cog sticky instead of creating new threads.
oh and for the record I'm running 3.04. Looking in to 4.1 anyways, wondering if I can update it without having to wipe everything. Can I restore apps + Data if I go from 3.04 to 4.1, or will that cause all sorts of hairy issues still?
No problem at all. Did you do your research around the forums and see all the reviews about the inspire not being all that it's cracked up to be? Not trying to sway your decision or anything, just making sure you know what you'll be getting into.

I don't think I wiped anything when I updated, but when I restored system apps with TiBu, I got some FC's when it came to a few of the system apps and data, don't recall which ones though.

I've been fiddling with it at the at&t store... I like it a lot but I'm looking in to the possibility of getting a different carrier's phone unlocked... I'll check out some of the discussion though. thanks
im not a big fan of how hard it is to remove the battery panel and the panel where the memory card would be at. but the phone looks nice. androidcentral has a video review about it

Wireless and network signals recently very low

Hi all,
Within the past week or so, I've noticed a fairly large drop in the signal strength from both my wireless lan and 3g signals. With the cell signal, it was even dropping to edge sometimes when I was outside in an area which used to give me full bars. Wireless isn't much better, and it seems to be fluctuating between 4/5 signal and 2/5 signal even though I'm close to my router. Again, I used to have full signal in the same location. Nothing really would have changed.
Yesterday I tried flashing Continuum (2.3.4) instead of running the stock 2.2 that I had before. The 3g signal seems to be *slightly* more consistent, although I'm still not at full bars, whereas I always was before.
Is this a common occurrence? Is it my hardware, and can I fix it myself, or do I need to send it in to Rogers? I've only had the phone for about 6 months now. I wonder if it's under warranty still (assuming I flash back the original ROM and bootloader).
If anyone has any suggestions it would be much appreciated. It's odd, but the wifi signal almost gets boosted when I'm trying to use the internet, but not to full bars even when I'm near the router.
Bump. Is this the wrong place to ask this question?
Cheers
My AT&T Captivate has similar issues. Mine started about a month ago. I haven't put any effort into figuring out the root cause.
Yeah, I'd really like to figure out what's up though. Does the hardware just crap out after a few months of use? Thanks samsung!

This trend happened with my HTC Aria as well. I don't believe its anything related to Samsung hardware crapping out.
So, if it's software, what would be consistent across a ROM and kernel flash?
I recently fixed a network error effecting call quality by flashing a new modem. I know our issues are different, but since you did flash new ROM i dont think it could hurt.

Stumbled across this article on Toms Hardware today and felt like it was a good read for this thread.

Unfortunately it's not just my wifi that has issues, but 3g as well.

Have you tried flashing a different modem? The one that came with your current rom may be different than you had before which would account for your weaker signals. Different modems work better in different areas. Try something else and see if it doesn't help, such as JK4 or JL3.
I haven't yet, but I actually had the problem before I flashed the ROM.
Where are you located. I have absolutely ATROCIOUS reception in Atlanta, and ATT says they have some 50 towers down. Your area might be the same. In my basement where I used to have 3 bars consistently, i know have to run around the basement struggling to get one bar to send a text. ATT needs to get their act together or everyone might start switching to Verizon.
In Toronto, Canada. We usually have good reception. It's only recently that I have had issues.
check with other people such as your family and see if they have bad service too, if so call your service provider, there may be an issue on their end. Other than that all I can suggest would be a full reset to factory and a master clear and then restart from there. While that is annoying, it might be worth it to solve the problem.

Signal and Data Issues

Today my note randomly dropped signal, Then it wouldnt pick up a data connection even when it did have signal. Now it randomly jumps to 5 bars before going back to none :/ I Reflashed my rom and it made no difference. Have tried multiple modems, and even restored a backup from before any issues occured. Nothing seems to be working and i have no idea why! It couldnt be anything to do with the efs could it? I mean i haven't touched it at all and i do have backups.
Any help is much appreciated!
it's a shame no one has any ideas on this. Mine has just started doing the same thing. First noticed a week ago when my Dad was unable to call me. It's starting to annoy me a little!

Hi Bud,
How's it been? How's the android development going on so far?
First of all, I would still commend you on your app (carbon tweaks) that have work wonders on my phone till now. Your app is simply awesome in making my phone simply 'sings'! . I truly appreciate your great efforts making that app carb. Such an amazing app indeed.
Anyway, going back on your issue. Have you tried changing ROMS already? Stock /ICS ROMS? is the issue still there amidst flashing different ROMS already?
Now if you say YES, How bout your network carrier or provider? have you called them up also? If not, you can try calling them.
The reason for that is, I too have the same issue as you have now. I was pissed off to the max on why I can't get full signal on my phone. Network connectivity would halt to a grinding slow up to the point of no connection and no signal at all.. then the signal would come back and it would disappear again. I tried everything as well, rebooted, flash ROMS, kernels, modems, wipe, but the issue woudn't go away still.
On the last effort I did, I called my carrier here in Portsmouth (AT&T) and I asked the operator if they have some upgrades going on on my location. And what comes to me as a surprise was that the at&t operator said YES they do have a network upgrade/s in my location and told me to just be patient and bear with them. I was about to blast them with all my frustrations but the girl operator was meekly apologetic and offered me some data packages added to my plan(that I simply can't refuse to deny).
Anyway, after that call, I waited till they've finally did an uptime on their end and in no time at all my my signal was back full bars and going strong on my phone.
Moral to the story is that... sometimes we are too pre occupied looking for answers INSIDE our phone that we fail to notice the OUTSIDE factors (that still counts) that makes our phone work also.
Cheers carb! :highfive:

Thanks for the comments about my app man I have to admit updates have been a little space lately but im young and not going to neglect my social life I really do owe you for the support though man! I will be sure to update you on any future projects I have
Turned out my issue was that my operator (o2) went down for most the country that day so that caused my issues and I just didn't realise xd

See? I told you it was just your carrier messing up with your connection.
I advised you on that and you called them up. It greatly saved much efforts on your time delving and sulking on the issue on your phone when the fact of the matter is.. it was not your phone at all having the issue... It was actually your carrier.
Next time bud, if your getting some weird connection problems.. my advice is, don't tinker directly down on your phone. Check your network/carrier first and see if they have some upgrades being implemented on your area.
Cheers bud!

D-415 GPS issues

Hello. I just got the D 415 from t-mobile. GPS is working, but not quite as well as it should be. Seems to lock on location and then go away or general flakiness. I have not rooted the phone yet. Are there any tips for settings that could be applied to the phone without rooting?

None that I'm aware of.
Most tweaks are just changing settings in the appropriate file within the devices file system. But root access is needed in order to do so.
I should mention that the GPS is a little flaky on my D415 as well. Might be the norm, dunno...

After owning this phone for three months, I'm worried it might be the antenna, since when I'm in the car, the signal will drop out, and pressing the back side of the phone against my sunroof always make it get its lock back. Might just be one of those issues where the antenna needs line-of-sight to the sky to work :/
In any case, Might be using my old windows phone as my primary nav. device unless there's a confirmed fix.
I have a D405. I used to have a samsung galaxy s3 mini -which was arguably a cheaper device- and had next to no issues recording my cycling rides on strava. On my D405, it won't even pick a GPS signal to begin with. Google maps GPS fix isn't as accurate as the sgs3 mini either, and sometimes well over a 100 meters or more discrepancy. There's another D405 owned by a family member and it's not faring much (if any) better... Thus, I don't think any kind of navigation can be possible with this device, which is a huge let down. Which is a shame because i was enjoying my experience very much with this device until i encountered the crappy GPS...
I have no problems with gps or strava , works very good. No difference with my Garmin.

Here also no issues, gps is much faster than on previous phone samsung galaxy y.

I think LG used substandard GPS hardware. I have people reporting GPS works great but my own experience, even on stock, it seems flaky to me. GPS wont lock for me if I'm inside but it will outside.
Sent from my LG-D415 using Tapatalk
In some models cars the gps connection is difficult, also some buildings, this has to do with the cage of faraday that shields from a good connection.
So i took my mum's d405 to my cycle ride yesterday and strava picked up a signal and recorded my entire ride just fine. Also, on GPS status & toolbox it will pick up 10 or more satellites out in the open. But my own d405 won't pick up a single satellite. I'm now thinking my d405 has a defective GPS antenna/hardware since both phones are on the same settings. I'll be taking it back to the shop soon.
Yes
I am having tons of GPS issues with my LG D415. It has been driving me crazy (location: Seattle). What's happened:
-Midway through a route, Maps will say "Lost GPS connection"
-Other times it will simply stop tracking the route and lose the position (assuming I am where I was 5 minutes ago); later it will lock into the GPS and begin giving directions again.
I've tried updating Maps. T-Mobile replaced the phone, assuming it was that particular phone that was the problem. But with the new LG D415, I have the same problems. Using GPS Status and GPS Test apps, It seems the phone has a hard time fixing on satellites. Not sure what to do at this point. May try and see if TMobile will take their phone back and try another network.
I worked on the initial deployment of GPS technology to DoD aircraft over 20 years ago and can tell you that the signal is weaker than you can imagine. It is below the noise level so it's not surprising when you can't lock it inside a building. The fact that different phones have different results speaks to the different antennae of the phones. Again, not surprising. Yes, having a clear view of the full sky is the best way to get optimum accuracy/results. What I've seen is that there's an error of about six feet when I use Google maps and my GPS. It could be anything from less than the best hardware resolving the signal to a position to a different earth model inside the phone's GPS hardware to Google maps being less than accurate. I figure that if I can get a position to six feet; I can avoid falling off a cliff by finishing the job with my eyes.

I just purchased 2 phones before I saw this.. I got them through ebay, brand new but with only 14 return. I'm trying to get LG to provide support for mine, have you done anything with yours?
I use GPS constantly, this phone has a weak antenna for GPS.
My phone was picking GPS signals very weakly and could not get a fix to any satellites. I explained my problems in the previous page in detail. The distributor where i live resisted swapping the phone with a new one, and i accepted a main board swap instead, performed under guarantee. They put another (hopefully a new) main board in the phone. But the problem still persists, which is baffling to say the least. Isn't the GPS antenna of this device on the main board ? Even worse still, the device now seems to restart itself randomly. In the ~2 hours i've spent with it after it's been returned to me, it restarted itself 3 times...
If I didn't have one more of the exact same device (which has no problems whatsoever) i would've said i was doing something wrong...
The same night i posted the above message, the phone went full kaput (never go full kaput ). They swapped the mainboard again but the device went bust before even leaving the shop. So there was no option other than to offer a new device. I'm now waiting for my new phone to arrive. Don't buy a phone from a 3rd world country. If this was in the USA or the UK, i know my device would've been swapped for a new one the first time, no questions asked. Choose something you won't have qualms about tossing in the trash if you have to buy.
My girlfriend just bought this phone from T-Mobile and immediately began complaining about GPS quality issues. It looks like there is no fix for this. Should she attempt to return it for a different phone? She has next to no directional skills and relies heavily on GPS.

GPS is flaky at best, even on stock. We all have different results for several builtin devices. Namely the camera as well as GPS. Other than that it's a pretty good device.

Sorry this is a month too late. Have her install GPS Status & Toolbox app and test the device in open terrain. It should easily pick 10+ signals within 20-30 seconds. If it's not, have her take it back for a swap.
GPS problem
I believe the GPS problem is a software issue, when I got the phone it used to get the signal very fast, 6 seconds or so, but now even with Gps fix app, it takes an eternity an then looses very easily, but gps fix even shows 20 or more sats but takes ages to lock the signal.

[Q] No GPS fix on Lollipop?

I have upgraded to L using Walter's method. Everything is pretty much good except that I can no longer get a GPS fix in any app I use. I can see plenty of satellites (upwards of 21), but will not get a fix...seemingly ever (I let it try on a 2 hour drive). To clarify, GPS worked quite well on 4.x.
I've tried a few workarounds such as:
GPS settings to get assist data
secret code to rebuild nvm or something like that
turning on and off high accuracy
performed the hardware hack mentioned in the general forum
I haven't tried a factory reset yet, and I'd like to avoid it if possible. Just curious as I've seen this problem detailed for several devices and networks, but no real solutions.
Thanks in advance.

The rooted from post 2. Everything else seems to be good.
Make sure you have oc1 modem. I play ingress and have no GPS issues
There were 2 many reasons why it is very slow to get GPS lock but one problem that I know 100% causes the GPS to lock slowly and not at all because of the aluminium back case that I was using on my galaxy note 3. I tested the GPS status toolbox with back case aluminium and sometimes the GPS lock took long time to fix and sometimes it did not lock at all! But supprisingly, when I remove the back case cover, I don't have that problem anymore. So, check if you have the back case aluminium. Something is interfering with the GPS signal. Now my note 3 is naked without back case but I'm happy this solved the issue. As I said this is one of the problem that caused the GPS lock issue. Perhaps there are more...
Tried everything including factory reset, still no luck
I tried almost everything as OP and did a Factroy reset. Still have the same issue, GPS cant get lock in. It works flawlessly before, start to having this issue after updating to lollipop, dont remember if it happened just after or not.
Is any other possible method to fix this?
Thanks,
