I got to play with both the note 4 and edge, ask me anything - Galaxy Note 4 General

Just like the topic title says.

The only questions I have are:when is the Note 4 coming to Canada and for how much.

probably in same time then in U.S....or around

How is the sound and the volume on the back speaker compared to Note 3 and HTC One?

Can you please clear...that all specs are TOTALLY same as Note 4 (except screen size and battery)?
And
5.6 inch screen size is with Edge Screen or without it?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium

Sound is hard to tell, I don't have it in a quiet room. It definitely fells way better in the hand then the note 3, the edge is nice and thin but feels more like the note 3, it doesn't feel as good in hand. Their but noticeably bigger then the g3.

I'm inside and can't compare but what I can say is, that I can't really notice a drastic improvement over the screen on the note 3.

How is the sound in headphones on the note 4 compared to note 3/s5 is it louder or the same.

Any TouchWiz improvements?

Simply: keep them side by side with manual maximum brightness ( same screen mode ). Blank white screen will tell you more.

A very good read:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/8497/note-4-and-mate-7-sidebyside
Quote from that:
I'd say Samsung made a very good choice in staying at 5.7" and not going larger. Immediately visible was the difference in screen quality. The Note 4 was a lot brighter, and due to the large size of the screens, the 1080p vs 1440p was quite noticeable to me.

um really not bother if a single or a group of person claims there is no drastic change/improvement, that is his/her vision and perception. It is not as if I was dying to see a radical change in screen, it is about gradual improvement and evolution

Does the Edge hinder the multi window dock on the right?
Any way to do a battery life comparison between the Note 4 and Edge?

How is the performance compared to the Note 3 (web browsing, opening pdf, taking notes) =?

Um, what he say for the rest of us they don't speak your language?
Yep definitely some grammar and syntax issues here. Nothing like broken English to not get your point across.
Personally I'm going to wait till a decent side-by-side screen comparison video with an iPhone 4s or later.
I trust Apple's calibration a hell of a lot more than on the LG G2.

I sold the g2 to get the nexus 5
I can tell you the screen is not bad in my opinion, not to say the g2 is not good however in my opinion the slightly smaller screen and higher ppi does make just that little bit sharper and the colours seem great to me.
Probably not calibrated like the last since that is manufacture optimization. Probably going to need Franco to make it look good.

Maybe the benchmark program can't take advantage of the enhancements in 4.4?

The Note 3 is probably optimizing itself for those specific benchmarks, I wouldn't trust those results.
Probably the calibration. We will try our best to get the best calibrated profile for the N5 (PA Team).
From the numerous videos etc I've seen it seems like the temperature/whites are ok, just the colours are a bit washed.
Hoping franco releases an n5 compatible version of his display control app so the rob values can be adjusted/improved.
Not sure if I have the balls yet for custom kernels etc.
You can mess with the colors and set them to your liking.
I've been comparing mine to my iphone 5's screen, honestly I can't see any difference. Although if someone could explain calibration test images to me I could do a quick comparison there as well.
From the feedback. It seems the g2 has clearer and a more vibrant screen than the n5. We ll see once reviews start rolling out.
Umm, how do you tell the screen is "really bad" from that video? It does seem more reflective which is a shame because it will look more washed out outside but aside from that, I don't see any evidence of "messed up calibration" there.
All I can compare it to is the HTC One and the N5 screen is nowhere compared to that, not even on the same planet. Colours are flat, blacks are grey, viewing angles are poor... relatively..

I doubt it can be fixed. You can calibrate any screen, or at least try to, but if it fundamentally isnt that great, it will always remain so. There is little you can do about viewing angles.

Poor blacks can't be fixed.
Has anyone compared it directly to the N4 screen? Both indoors and outdoors/in direct sunlight. I suspect the N5 screen is even more reflective and washes out more.

Cheaper display? I'm not so happy

Hi,
I own a Galaxy S2, Note N7000, a Tab S and a newer SM-N910C Note 4. I counted these devices to point I'm very familiar with various AMOLED displays. In fact, I'm so charmed by this technology that I won't ever buy a phone or tablet with LCD again. The problem is, on Note 4 RED is not as RED as in previous devices. I put the same test image on all devices, and all S2, Note 1 and Tab S displays a very pure red, the Note4 displays a kind of red- pink. I really can't say the view quality is poor, white is really white on its screen, but the wavelength of the red color is clearly different. All in this device gives me a "premium feel", but I can't explain why red looks so different. Did they used cheaper materials? I can't imagine it's only to my phone, screen uniformity is good and all screeen has the same color.
I pictured all phones (Note 4 on the left, Note 1 and S2 on the right) with Standard screen mode, brightness maximum.
I noticed this possible issue few days ago when I found about the *#0*# test mode for samsung and I wanted to try. At the very first RED test I noticed that isn't quite red.
Please note that colors aren't distorted because of different screen brightness, the hue is quite the same for the eye, too!
LE: I'm sorry I didn't noticed the screen dedicated topic here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-tmobile/general/display-issues-thread-t2910575/page2
My mistake...
Mine looks about as crappy. Dang it now you've triggered my ocd, sigh.
Mine's an SM-910F and the screen is red as red can be. Probably deeper red than the S2 in your pic.

Agreed my n910f is as red as it could be.
Here is my Note 4 next to my good old S2. Both are on maximum brightness and the picture is taken with an S4.
[/IMG]
[/IMG]
The thing is the Note 4 screen is way way much brighter than the S2 and is known that the previous Galaxy flagships had very unrealistic and saturated colors. The Note 4 has by far the best screen ever and color reproduction is much closer to reality compared to the older generations of S/Note line.
Cheaper display? No chance! The display on Note 4 is top quality/technology and you cannot compare it to the S2.
EDIT: Check your Display settings, you might use different settings and that might be the cause of the pink'ish red.

This phenomena happens the same with screen on basic or photo. The red hue is the same on my S2, note1 AND Tab S - which it is said it has the most calibrated screen colors. Only on Note 4 the hue is slight pinky. Not much, but uniform. Can I have a unit that was not properly checked?
Hi,
Can anyone please test with this image on 10% brightness to check if there is ghosting.

For me, you have a faulty unit. Please go to settings and change the screen mode under "screen" to have the same in every device, if it still looks bad, take the photos and send it to the Warranty, they have to give you a brand new device. My N910C looks much better than my Old N7000's screen. Used an image with R:255 G: 0 B: 0 (Pure red) and doesnt looks "pink" as yours. Good luck and let us know if you will have a replacement or not. Cheers!

Yes. There's ghosting and it's a known issue since the Galaxy S4. This affects every Note 4 so don't worry, it's not only your phone.
Edit: actually it's not called ghosting. Its like blue shades it had a proper name, I will investigate a bit more

Don't worry, I had a Galaxy s4 too and I hated its screen. On my Sm-N910C I see some ghosting, but its 1/5 of the Galaxy s4 ghosting. Don't Worry about this bro.
My red screen is very good too. I made a comparison with my Galaxy s4 and I see no much difference.
Until the Galaxy s6 outs, the Nkte 4 has the best screen of the market.
Sorry for my bad english, I'm very sleepy.
I'll go into a store and compare my unit with a display unit there. I hope the unit in "Store mode" allows me to enter *#0*#, as I won't be able to install apps on it. After all, it is a simple test; then I'll get back here to tell you.

had the chance to see the Note 4 and the S6 side by side via skype right after the official presentation, looks pretty much the same (Talking about brightness and contrast). IDK about colors as the stream was a bit low quality, but between both I didn't saw too much difference. The screen seems to be the same as Note 4, and that's why Samsung didn't made publicity of the S6 screen and instead focused in other features.
Before starting to explain, I will do an analogy about the amoled screens: There were two "batchs"/generation of amoled screens, first one is the S/S2/S3/Note1/Note2 and the newer one started with the S4, and remained in the Note 3/4 and probably the S6.
Since the S4, samsung "remade" the Amoled screens from scratch, featuring better color reproduciton and whites (the older generation had a green tint all over the white colors).
The S4 screen was the poor amoled screen so far. Maybe because it was the first 1080p Screen by samsung, but it wasn't the best. The issue was called "Purple smearing" and happend even at full brightness. It was pretty noticeable when you move a grey object which had a black background behind, just like the separators between settings at the settings app. However, this issue was reduced in newer devices. The S4 Mini didn't had this issue since the screen quality was pretty much the same screen build as the Note 2, S2 or S3. In the Galaxy S5 and Note 4, the screen was much better built than the S4, however, the smearing effect still happens at low brightness. It's not a big deal, I can live with that. I just hope that I will not have screen burn-in problems like I had with the Note N7000.

My impression is S3 was the first using different driving methods and different materials. Different driving because you can see PWM dimming when low brightness and different materials because bluish reflections when display off.

Clarity/resolution

The OnePlus 5T has a crazy crisp display. Just kidding, this is automated text so who knows if this screen is any good. So, you be the judge! A higher rating indicates that it's extremely sharp and clear, and that you cannot see pixels with your naked eye.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I have used Samsung Galaxy Note 4 for 2 years ( AMOLED 2k) before coming to 5T and I really don't see any difference.

Good to know, I'm eyeing a 5t myself. I think I read that they use a different 'diamond' pixel spacing on the 5t, so it may actually appear more pixel dense than the old lentil arrangement on Samsung's previous amoled panels.

If you meant "diamond pentile matrix", then Samsung has been using it from S3 days or even earlier than that. Today's Samsung sourced mobile amoled displays have diamond pentile matrix only that includes 5t as well. This pixel arrangement gives less number of green and red subpixels compared to LCD and other screens but it's non noticeable for a screen with ppi more than 400. It was a problem in S3 and note 2 days bcoz of low resolution but not anymore..
So get the 5t with eyes closed.

What I can tell you is that the display is perfect. No discoloration or hues on tilting the screen, brightness is uniform only thing is the display looks a bit...really a bit more reflective than the note 4 display but then it could be because of the screen guard thats pretty applied. Other than that nit picking the display is amazig.

I went through 3 different pixel 2 XLs (for various defects) before setting on the OP5T; all 3 pixels had significant uniformity problems with the top being brighter than the bottom. Also very grainy. Can't find anything wrong with the display on the 5T.

Not sure. Plenty of pink tints etc on Samsung panels. But the Samsung ones are a lot better anyway.
I had 2k screens (G3, S7e and Pixel XL) for 3 years and while I can squint and see that the 5T is a lower resolution, it looks the same when you use it normally.
I was a little concerned about this, but was relieved when I got the phone and the screen was very nice and crisp.
I would like to admit to being quite picky about resolution and used to change it on my G3 to get better battery life but couldn't stand it being slightly "blurry" because it was no longer 1:1, pixel for pixel. Most people don't notice this but it did! (Not that the text looks blurry on the 5T because it is 1:1 at 1080p.)

Hey, i just switched too from the Note 4 to too! Before buying i was sceptical too due to the 1080p screen, so i went to the stores and had a look at the mate 10 pro, wich also has a 1080p 6" screen and i couldn't see any difference, so i ordered the OP5T. I am very happy with the screen! Can't see any difference in normal use aswell. Plus it has a much whiter white than my Note 4.
Coming from the 2K screen on the Nexus 6P to the OnePlus 5 had me a little skittish, but it wasn't a significant enough change to warrant returning it. The 5T's OLED panel takes things to another level with its brightness/darkness levels and battery life impact. I thoroughly love it, and went as far as to drop my font size to the lowest possible to give me the faux-highres feel.
Currently my oneplus 3 screen uniformity is rubbish. It's especially noticeable on white band even more so on grey backgrounds with a very noticeable yellow tint towards the top left of the screen. It's pretty gross.
I know it's a bit of a "lottery" with OLED screens but can I expect a better overall experience coming from the OP3?
Id the oneplus 5t screen from samsung ? Shame google couldn't just take an oled display from samsung because otherwise, the pixel 2 xl would be the perfect smartphone.....

Sadly it costs to much and has no headphone jack and has not much development.
now back to topic: the screen looks fine nearly the same as on my op3 but thats okay it was a very good screeen.
I've from a QHD Super Amoled display from my Note 5 to this phone. Unless you're gonna use a magnifying glass to pin point pixels, you're gonna find both both displays are excellent. I am extremely happy with the display with my 5t.
Screen looks awesome to me. With any oled screen it's a lottery how uniform it will be.
The screen looks fantastic to me... no noticeable difference from a 2k one.
The phone does not support VR so it would have been only a useless battery draining feature.

GALAXY Note 9 Screen quality?

I have in the past used Note 1 then upgraded to Galazy S4 and now Note 9. When I tried all these devices in store before buying. Their screens appeared to be excellent. But once I bought them and used them for a few days I slowly started to see issues with screens. The note 1 I had slowly developed this redness on right edge of the phone over time visible only on grey background under low brightness. I got it replaced 3 times but then gave up. After that when I switched to S4 it had this reddish top and greenish bottom visible only on low brightness and white or light grey background. I got it replaced once and again got a similar screen with the same issue plus overall slightly yellowish tint on the whole screen. So once again I gave up and was using the same device from past 5.8 years. Now when I tried the Note 9 in stores i just loved the screen and ordered it. Now after using it for a few days I find on light backgrounds that the screen is slightly brighter at the bottom than the top. In fact it's like it's whiter at the bottom than at the top. I was thinking are there amoled screens which have uniform whiteness/brightness across the screen. In all other aspects the screen is perfect to me but this issue once I know it's there is somewhat annoying to me. How is your screen ?

Most people wouldn't notice.
I've had a SGSII, a Note 4 and I'm currently using a Note 8. All of SAMOLED displays have been really good with no issue as you have described.

You do know that Sony is failing in the smartphone department right? They currently in the same situation as LG. Unfortunately, the screen won't save their smartphone division.
Edit: Playstation is where Sony gets their money these days. Sad to see.
"A growing thorn in Sony’s side is its mobile handset business which counts its revenue, primarily from its Xperia line of handsets under the Mobile Communications segment. Sales of $6.88 billion were down 5% from the previous year and the group posted a loss of $255 million.
The mobile communications group guided to a further 12% drop in sales for fiscal 2018 and a projected loss of $138 million. The group does see some light at the end of the tunnel – 5G wireless technology."
They gave been losing money year over year, quarter over quarter man. Their lack of innovation is dragging them down like LG.
By the way, last edit. Sony didn't make that OLED screen. LG Display did.
Displaymate rated the Note 9 as having the best display ever on a mobile phone. Just as they did for the S9, and Note 9 before that. Pretty much every new top of the line Samsung device trumps the best there was before it.... and the best there was has pretty much always been on a Samsung device. Sammy makes the best displays.
In any case, you can find other very good displays on other phones that look pretty much as good, but when a place like Displaymate puts a "best ever" sticker on a device's display, it is for a reason. Note 9 display is not much different than the Note 8 display for instance, but it is enough of an improvement to warrant the top billing from Displaymate.

Here's that survey, the Note 9 is MIA, how convenient.

Can't go wrong with either, but, just wanted to post a credible link vs your inexplicable need for the attention from trolling...

that article never named its source. could have just as well been sony propaganda. love how the article starts with " claims a survey.." of what? 2 or 3 clueless dudes? Maybe Karandeep Singh got payed a couple of rupees..or even a sony phone out of it
edit:
and now since what's on the internets is always "true", people acctualy believe anything nowadays if its well framed and worded.

Actually,it appears to be nothing more than a marketing company hired by Sony:
https://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/legal/testresults/xperia-xz3/
https://www.strategyanalytics.com/
https://www.bloomberg.com/research/stocks/private/snapshot.asp?privcapId=1051783
All companies on this level tend to use such garbage "research" for marketing, all claims like this should come with an e-coupon code for a pinch pound of salt.
What's worse is peeps getting their panties in a wad, feeling the need to either rationalize their choice in phones, trolling those that have "x" phone,& the fanboi behavior that's fueled by the fluff articles.
The Note 9 is a nice phone, got one myself.
Is it the absolute best out there? In the eye of the beholder & nothing more.
Others choosing something else is equally fine, one would be hard-pressed to actually find a truly terrible phone w/o intentionally seeking one out.
Note 9 earpiece smudges won't go away
Hey I guys I bought the note9 from 6 days ago. One day I was just rubbing the top bezel ( the space that has selfie camera, iris, led, ect) suddenly I saw 2 smudges, one above the earipeice, one under. I kept rubbing it and it doesn't go away. I believe that maybe when I was rubbing my hands were sweating so water entered beneath the glass. Here's a picture I posted here so maybe you'll get what I mean. If anyone has this issues or fixed please share it here. If the attachment is not working please say.
Thanks
Ahmed

Take it back & exchange for a new one.
Any attempts to fix it on your own will likely make it worse.
Don't waste a minute waiting for home remedies here, utilize the return/exchange policy for a free replacement before that period expires.

All note 9 owners can you please open any site with white background in google chrome and when the phone is held in hand in portrait mode do you see even slight difference between the white levels at the top and bottom of the screen. Please reply. Its very slight but its there.

I opened Samsung browser with no tabs open white screen. Slightly yellow or warm color. Looks pretty even but if I were to be extremely critical top side is a more darker maybe.
The white is definitely not like the note 8 white . Using amoled photo with slight blue light setting.

My Note 9 has an even white color across the whole screen. It also has a bit truer whites than my Note 8. Part of that may be that my Note 8 is now a year old, but overall I believe Samsung tuned the contrast down a bit on the Note 9 from the Note 8. Just to be clear, I am using the exact same display settings on both phones.... so I am getting an accurate comparison of the Note 9 vs Note 8. There is very little difference, you'd have to literally be looking at them side by side to notice the slight difference.

looks as if you have a glass or plastic film. the cutout of the speaker is to high for it being the original glass
Compare home screen icons on the note 8 and note 9. Let me know what difference you see. I see the note 9 not being as sharp. But then on the same token , the note 9 like I said earlier is more natural and appeasing to the eyes.

Exactly that is what I am trying to say. The screen is beautiful with the best whites I have seen on a amoled screen and its pretty even as well. But my eyes seem quite sensitive to screens and I also feel the top is somewhat darker.

Some questions

Well I have the note 9 since 5 days
Feels great and the new features also are, but there is some things I'm missing from note 8.... if you can help me please.
Useless but I can't find stickers on camera and I can't add more modules...
In my pocket the phone sounds to low and I can't find the sound boost on pocket.
The screen in great but it feels a little darker, I mean I have to set brighter in some normal situations like games.
Thanks fellas

I can answer your last question / paragraph. This is the first thing I noticed also, however I can assure you the screen now looks much better in my eyes, more natural and appeasing. Even now if put my Note 9 next to my wife's note 8, her screen seems to pop more and look brighter and mine a little washed lol.
