Picture quality - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How about new Moto X picture quality? As we know, it delivers a 13 MP camera, however, the more MP does not mean great picture quality.
Has any picture taken with Moto X been released?

A lot of photo samples are there!

I think that camera quality hasn't been improved and the image processing seems more aggressive than in moto x 2013. Photos are very grainy!!!! The quality of these photos remember me to the razr xt910 that take grainy photos also. I'm very disappointed. Night captures are terrible!!!!

I somewhat agree! I mean if it's really the same sensor which was used in S4 and kinds, then the photos should look better than how they look! Just like the original X the results are inconsistent, one shot looks nice and another really average! Maybe software enhancements are not there, or something...
For me though, the photos are okay, however I don't give much a damn about camera, but still if camera solely is the reason for someone to purchase a phone then I think it's better to look elsewhere. I will however wait for a proper review, these shots might come from a pre release unit running on unstable software.

I think you cats are being over dramatic

[Q] Camera MOD or Alternate APK?

So...the STOCK camera image quality is a great disappointment.
usually the end result is a grainy not so sharp and little detail captured. Pictures turn up with a lot of NOISE in them.
QUESTION: Does any one know of a alternative to getting better quality out of the sensor in the HTC One?
Maybe another APK, or a MOD or just anything else in general to get better quality?
When I take a picture outside in daylight the image size varies from 800Kb to 1.8 MB. Just by looking at the size of the file I can tell its crappy quality. My Nexus 4 was taking pictures of 2.3 - 3.4MB and it captured a great amount of detail.
Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

So what your saying is that im pretty much SOL? lol
Your first sentence alone is enough to discredit your argument. Read some reviews from experts- I doubt you'll find any that describe the camera as "crappy".
Plus, you're comparing the file sizes of a 4mp camera and an 8mp camera, what do you expect?

Even though it's "only" 4 megapixels, the camera in my One is better in every way than the 8 megapixel shooters in my Galaxy S 3 and Optimus G.
I don't use my camera phone to create photographic masterpieces, but it does the job I need it to do.

Moto X vs N5 photos anyone?

With many people having both phones with latest updates, perhaps someone can do a real world camera test and post images?
I actually own both, just picked up a Nexus 5 a few hours ago. I'll post some pictures under controlled conditions tomorrow or Saturday, maybe.

I have both and have some sample photos to share. From my tests they are fairly close. In about 60-70% of the photos, the Moto is better. The Moto generally has higher contrast and saturation. The images are often sharper but also have more noise. The biggest difference is the aspect ratio. The Nexus is 4/3 and the Moto us 16/9.
Current galaxy nexus owner with a houseful of toddlers. Debating moto x vs n5. Appreciate the pics, but what about moving subjects? Anyone with some average case snapshot comparisons? What about general thoughts on camera launch speed, autofocus speed, and shutter lag between the two?

Damm... what a diference @xpersimmon
With this latest updates, I would really appreciate a new compare with top cameras around... like iPhone 5S, S4 and Lumia's...

Is your camera updated on Nexus ?...pictures look washed out. I thought they fixed focus issue and the whole point of OIS is to take sharp pictures

I am using the latest software on both phones. The moto is 4.4 with camera version 3.1.41.2. The Nexus is 4.4.2. They both miss focus sometimes. I think the Nexus looks even more washed out because the Moto is over processed.
These are all casual snapshots. I didn't frame them exactly the same but tried to get them close. Here are some additional test shots, this time from outdoors. Let me know if you want to see specific examples.

Hello Chevlar. The launch speed, shutter lag, and autofocus speed are fairly close from what I can tell. The launch speed on the Nexus may be slightly faster, but it varies. Autofocus accuracy they are both hit and miss. Some shots are clearly not focused accurately on both cameras. I don't have any moving subjects available. The Moto tends to use a higher shutter speed and ISO which would work a bit better if all else is equal.
Here are some more shots from today. In these cases the Nexus outperforms in the Roku box, the sculpture. The Moto is better in the sailor painting. The fruit, tree flower, and bricks are similar. On the plumeria the Moto focused in a different place.
In summary:
Moto-X:
16/9 aspect ratio
misses focus sometimes
generally higher contrast and saturation (somewhat over-processed)
somewhat sharper but also more noise
tends to choose higher ISO and higher shutter by about 1/2 of a stop
Nexus-5:
4/3 aspect ratio
misses focus sometimes
lower contrast, a bit "washed out"
lower noise, smoother (more noise reduction?)
tends to choose lower ISO and lower shutter speed by about 1/2 stop.

The Nexus 5 shipped with 4.4, not 4.2.2. Do you mean you are running 4.4.2?
As for the other poster who asked about launch speed: The Moto X blows the nexus 5 out of the water in terms of speed. The moto X also loves to raise the ISO like crazy to maintain a faster shutter speed, which would be better suited for taking photos of toddlers. The Nexus 5, on the other hand, likes to leverage its optical image stabilization to lower its shutter speed and its ISO, leading to less noisy pictures. This makes it suited for photographing still subjects, but not fast moving ones. You might think to get around this by installing a third party camera app, but the one I have tried (Camera Zoom FX), does not allow changing of ISO to boost shutter speed. The moto X, on the other hand, does have support for ISO adjustments in Camera Zoom FX.
Comparing the shutter speed taken in various pictures the Nexus 5 likes to stay at around 1/30, whereas the Moto X does 1/40 to 1/50.

I think it tends to over expose as well (see the blown out whites in the first flower). I have seen this in numerous other Nexus 5 shots as well.
Yes, the Nexus is running 4.4.2. I am sorry about that typo. I corrected it in the post.

What aspect of speed are you referring to? If I use both cameras quickly, the Nexus fires off the shot before the Moto-X. I am not sure if the delay is due to shutter lag, or focus time. The Moto-X does have a burst mode. If you hold the shutter down it will fire continuously at about 2 shots a second. I don't think the Nexus-5 has burst mode (at least I haven't been able to find it).
Top is N5, bottom is X. Moto X has purple fringing still. This is especially apparent around tree branches. Moto X has too much noise and does not look true to life as the N5 in low light scenarios. N5 has much lower noise in low light. In general N5 color is more accurate. I find indoor pictures on the Moto X look plain bad; it fails to capture incandescent light well and produces a fluorescent light instead. The things that drives me crazy is that red looks like magenta on the Moto X and the purple fringing or tint. Camera is updated as it can be on 4.2.2. Moto X fails badly in a warm scene. If anyone can, please take pictures of red objects.
^ Moto X looks horrible in those low light shots
here are few red photos. one with flash, another with HDR
So from what I see here, the Moto X is better at daytime shots, but is TERRIBLE at night shots (which is weird since every ad I see talks about the low light camera).

Moto X colors look purple or pale even in certain day time shots. Pink fringing on foilage is not good. The blue sky always looks better on the N5. 1st one is Moto X , 2nd is N5. Leaves easily more visible on N5 too.

I can deal with that, but the low light photos on the X are the worst I've ever seen on a high end smartphone.

Yeah it isn't pretty at all no matter how you look at it. IMO, the N5 soundly beats the X in just about every way. It's only close in near/macro shots or so and once I start to take pictures of distance scenes the N5 pulls away. While we're on this topic here's another night shot . All those yellow spots and purple fringing at the edges. Moto X is making the scene much brighter than it actually is.
Here's another example of low indoor lighting. It's not clear to me that the Nexus is better in this situation, but the Moto-X clearly has issues with incandescent lighting. Check out these photos of my calculator. ISO is 640 Moto, 570 Nexus; shutter 1/50 Moto, 1/30 Nexus. Please ignore the dirt
Like I said, the difference in macro shots is much smaller than it is with distant shots. A lot of phone cameras can do good macro shots. Color accuracy is important too besides detail. They need to really come up with a solution to this incandescent problem but maybe it is a hardware limitation that software alone can't overcome.
That last show is pretty interesting, the Nexus looks quite warm and a touch softer. With a little adjusting to post processing and color balance we could be sitting really well with the camera.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the LG Nexus 5X come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
It's ok. Lots of details
I'm not a photographer by any means. So long as I can capture the moment, it's good enough.
I docked a star because the lack of OIS. It is noticeable under many circumstances, and it's sorely missed.
Otherwise, this camera is pretty darn great!
Coming from Oneplus One previously, this camera is 100x better IMO. No issues whatsoever.
Also comming from a OPO. The camera in NX5 is one of the best... I love to be able to take shots in low light without flash. HDR+ and 1.55 u size make great job.
Nexus 5X+ Nova+Root
Great cam, have to say I dont miss the OIS at all, its useless for 99% of my photography use cases. Video is a different thing, but here you can enable EIS in the build.prop and it does a decent job too.
I'm using the stock google camera on HDR+ mode for absolutely everything. Image quality even in low light is pleasantly surprising! I think I can get 85% of the image quality from my (well-aged) Pentax K-5 (built-in in-body stabilization) on the 35mm f/2.8 prime. Of course, HDR+ combines many shots in order to maintain colour saturation and reduce the appearance of noise, whereas on my Pentax I just shoot RAW and tweak one shot, so it's not a perfect comparison. But, the Nexus 5X is good enough for social media and one helluva lot lighter and easier to carry than the dSLR!
Also, I used to use a LG G4, and I prefer the look of google camera HDR+ compared to the LG camera HDR mode. Dynamic range and colour accuracy are all better on the Nexus 5X in my eyes.

You nailed it - as they say: "The best camera is the one that's with you."
Also interesting comparison regarding the G4, thank you!
its cool
Coming from a Z3 Compact, this camera is leagues better, there is legitimately no comparison. That being said, the pictures are quite stunning, possibly in some circumstances rivalling my RX100. I am no photographer but I am very happy with the camera in this phone.

Very very good ... Better then Moto x pure which has a 21mp camera.
Not to mention the camera mods available that make this camera close to 6p cam

It would be nice if you guys put some photo examples here.
I jumped to the N5x from a Samsung ATIV S.
Damn I miss the two phase shutter button, but quality wise the N5x wins, not that the ATIV S was bad, just looking a little dated these days...

Camera Settings and Taking Photos

Ive seen some of the photos that other people have taken with the P20 Pro and they look amazing.
I'm no professional photographer and don't pretend to be one. I just want to take photos of my children when on holidays, days out, events and birthdays etc.
Every photo I take seems like a good shot, until you zoom in on the photo, then the image becomes pixelated. Another thing that seems to happen a lot is colour fading, every shot looks washed out or like it's lacking vibrant colours.
I've got the Huawei P20 Pro mainly because the camera was classed as the current best in mobile phones. I feel like I either don't understand the camera or that doing something wrong.
Could anyone offer any advice.
Depends on shooting mode and how much light you have. If I try to shoot in Aperture Mode in low light, I get pixelated photos as well. From my 1 month experience with the phone, I can tell you the camera is far inferior to that of other current flagships (especially when shooting pictures of people), mostly because of software overprocessing. It will usually oversharpen the crap out of everything (especially when using the 3x zoom lens) and will destroy skin texture (regardless of beauty mode selection). I get wildly inconsistent quality across. While some pictures end up fine, most will look a lot better on-screen than on a computer. Also, the pictures will almost always be brightened after processing, which means that what you're seeing on screen when taking a picture is not how the final photo will look. I'm coming from a Samsung S7 and its camera provided very predictable (and sometimes maybe even better than Huawei's) results, where what I saw on screen is what I got. I'm quite disappointed by this phone. They really need to fix their software, but I doubt they'll ever do that.
I tend to just use the standard AI and have got (IMHO) some lovely pics without filters or tinkering. I've started an Instagram of some of my favourite P20 Pro pics - not sure if we are allowed to link to them on here these days ?
That's what I've been doing recently and they seem better than before.
I think we can link pictures as it's not advertising.

I've just started adding a few of (what I consider to be) my best shots.
I will admit, those are some nice photos.
I think I'm going to take some outside shots tomorrow and see what they turn out like.
I'll gladly share them with you, for comparison purposes.
I have the P20 Pro since few months and i compare it with S9, S9+, Pixel 2 and IPhone X, i assure you that this device have one of the best phone's camera in 2018, you can also look in the DXOMark that is the TOP-1, i came from Galaxy S7, and S7 have a good camera very similar with S8 and S9, but the versatiliy of the P20 Pro is far from them, also if you take pictures in sunny days with the 40mpx sensor, you will see that looks like a professional camera, its true that sometimes the IA is overworking the scene, but you can disable on the screen easy

Question Disappointing daylight photo quality

Hello
For different reasons, I had to upgrade my vanilla S20 to vanilla S23 (though I was not entirely convinced to).
Although the phone runs incredibly smooth, the battery life is amazing, screen is the best I've ever seen, the most important phone aspect for me is the camera video and photo quality, especially during the daytime.
Videos are amazing from S23 and way better than S20's, especially in terms of stabilization.
However, the daylight photos, from all cameras leaves A LOT to be desired. No matter what photo is it - well lit room, landscape, greenery, plants, moving objects, from both main and Telephoto camera are noticeably WORSE than from S20 during daytime.
Photos are noisy as hell, does not have that much details and has too much oversharpening applied. Even using fake 1,1 "tele" lens from S20, the resolved details during the daytime are just better on S20, on all available zoom ranges. Oversharpening on S23 is so strong that it literally kills some finest details sometimes and makes all photos look artificial and unnatural. S20 photos, compared to S23 look as if it S20 was from far future compared to S23.
I am incredibly disappointed as I was expecting A LOT more from phone of that kind. S20 photos are just amazing and I expected something either similar or better.
Is there any way to reduce the oversharpening and smoothen the photos so that they are not that noisy? Or maybe force S20's camera algorithms to S23?
Expert RAW is a no go for me as it takes too much time to play with to take photo. It also processes these photos too much.
Thanks,
Maciej
I came from pixel 7 and I am also dissaponted a lot from the camera although I wouldn't say my photos have noise. It's this Overusaturation that Samsung does( I have turned off scene optimizer) that gets on my nerves. Also night photos are not good. I'm thinking of switching back to pixel.

Wow, thank you for reply!
I've been looking for something like this, although I'm not entirely convinced if there are enough options regarding eg. noise. Nevertheless, I will surely try it out and share my findings
Kindest regards,
Maciej
I have played with the Camera Assistant app and it helped a little bit indeed, but the quality is still far from perfect.
No matter what "Smoothening" level I select, there is still visible noise, but more or less "smudged" based on "Smoothening" settings. Finest details are also lost when any "Smoothening" is enabled (even the medium option).
Although there is some visible changes with Camera Assistant, I still preffer S20's photos as they are both detailed and noise-free.
I hope Samsung improves the Camera, because this is not what people should expect from the top tier Android flagships. Too bad is that March security patch does NOT include any Camera improvements.

Thank you for your reply.
Scene optimizer has been off since I first launched the camera. On pro mode the results are moreless the same - very noisy and tons of artificial oversharpening.
I've had an opportunity to compare my shots from last year's S22. I think there is less noise from S22 shots, so I believe this will get fixed by Samsung in the near future. BTW - S22's photos are still worse than my old S20's and that's the major reason I decided not to purchase S22 year ago.
I shoot and edit in RAW/DNG only. I like the S23 photo compared to my S21 phone.
Do you use Pro mode then?
Hi,
I have the same issue, as per the flagship tag, the photo quality is not that much great I would say.
Usually people taking photos just point and shoot no other special settings changes.
This camera taking 2 to 3MB picture with 12MP camera but too much noise and little blurry as well.
When I switch to 50MP 3:4mode then picture is capturing little sharpen as compared to the above 12MP camera, but it has very large size of picture around 8 to 12MB.
Even banana shape are also capturing specially on humans head.
I'm very disappointed with the camera.
If I talk about overall phone except camera then this is the best phone I have ever seen.
I don't know why every YouTuber is telling lie to us in camera department, they are saying camera is much better then the iPhone or Pixel but the real truth is this phone has very poor camera specially while capturing the photos.
My brother have Realme 9pro+ and he has taken photos on my daughter's birthday and I have taken also and I'm surprised when I saw the quality of his phone's camera photo, very sharp, no noise good quality and size is also not that much.
Thinking to buy pixel 7 or some other flagship kind of phone in exchange of this S23 because I don't this so Samsung will push the camera update on this as they are very much focused on 23ultra and they have bought every YouTuber mouth as well.
I'm very happy with the camera quality so far. This month we should receive a major camera update and it will get only better with time. I have compared the gcam output with the Samsung camera app and gcam is significantly worse. And yes I have used the config file as described.
I truly hope this match update will indeed improve the quality of the camera as this is simply bad now.
Moreover - I have also found many other issues as I keep using my S23 as a daily driver.
First - the video stabilization simply does not work. It did work once released and it was actually one of major improvements that made me amazed, but it seems like february (or march) security patch has simply destroyed this feature. The videos are completely without ANY kind of stabilization.
Second - I have noticed that the Super Slow Motion mode has a HUGE step back when compared to S20. I love this feature as this allows you, without any professional hardware, to capture interesting physical phenomenoms using just your phone, such as lighting up the lighter, break the glass/ice, or even see how the little bees' wings work. These kind of videos have always been unique to Samsung and I find them extremely interesting and I'm a huge fan of these.
While S20 did capture the real 960 frames for 1 second (quite a long of time for a smartphone), S23 captures only half a second and... it's certainly NOT 960 FPS, but rather 480 FPS artificially enriched to 960 FPS by the software.
The effect is that you can't see all the phenomenoms - bees are wingless, the glass breaks unnaturally (you clearly see it's more AI work than actual capture). I'm terribly disappointed.
Honestly I doubt this upcoming March camera patch will solve that many issues and I'm extremely disappointed that 1000 EUR phone is such a garbage in terms of camera. I agree with @Normas Interruptor
If I talk about overall phone except camera then this is the best phone I have ever seen.

But the truth is that you can charge your battery if it's empty, you can still use the phone if it lag sometimes, you can play the games if you don't have full details. But you can't repair damaged and bad photo. Period.
