If you're looking for something to ask motorola that will make our phones better, is possible for them to do and is almost somewhat expected (I keep thinking about how they say they're striving to work with the rom development community ...) feel free to post your thoughts for motorola here. An unlocked bootloader would allow us to run a custom kernel on our phones, I imagine CM9 would be up within days of motorola offering a bootloader unlock solution!!
Excellent point! I think begging for an early upgrade is silly, but asking for an unlocked bootloader would make our phones that much better. I would rather have a D3 with lots of Dev support, than a locked down D4. I came from a droid Incredible and the Dev support was great, and it breathed life into a phone that was somewhat dated.

Running CM9 now... only real issues are Camera, B key not working on keyboard, and the data being somewhat flaky for people, although it works fine once you get it going. Just be patient, we have great devs and don't really need an unlock. It would be nice though.
Motorola is okay with unlocking the bootloader from what I've heard but Verizon doesn't want it. From locked bootloaders to forced bloatware to removing Google Wallet from the Nexus, its clear that Verizon just loves to screw with Android. When are they going to learn the most people only want to use your network, we could care less about anything you have to offer.

idk y Verizon would let samsung unlock bootloaders and not motorola. Nexus is unlockable. Google Wallet is blocked becasue Verizon (+partners) spent $100Million (or something ridic) in a very similar banking product.
I was referencing a story where Verizon removed the option to unlock the bootloader on the Razr.

Since it is a development phone for the new OS, I think that the Nexus *must* be unlockable. It's the same reason why the Xoom is unlockable - it was the reference device for Honeycomb. So, if the next Nexus phone is Motorola, and it's on Verizon, it should also be unlockable.

I wonder if they would consider that when they disallow rooting in the first place. More likely a play to insure that phone's stay locked to their network with their software. I can also see it from a support perspective but with custom roms available you change your first support step to "restore the original software, does it work now" and continue like normal from there.
I've been reading something online that suggest there is a way to purchase an Unlock code for a NON-Developer Edition Moto X from Verizon. I am kind of interested in doing this so I can get my root back. I was wondering if this was an official thing to buy one from Verizon or something less than official?

I've been trying to get a clear answer to this but I don't think anyone knows for sure, not too many people jumping in to talk about it, I have found these posts though that seem to indicate that you don't need a dev ed. to root 4.4.

I bought mine through Best Buy (on Verizon) about a month ago. I have root on 4.4 using the SlapMyMoto method. I used this guide on Reddit because I found it a little less confusing than the one on XDA.
I installed Xposed framework and the X Tether/Moto Tether module and it seems to activate the hotspot just fine.

(sorry, this might be the long answer, but hopefully it will help you understand what I'm saying and why..)
SlapMyMoto can be used to root, and MotoWpNoMo can be used to disable write protection *IF* your phone is on 4.4 or lower.
MotoWpNoMo (which disables write protection) is needed because when Write Protection is enabled (the phone's default state with locked bootloader, or the state you are in after you take the 4.4.2 OTA), any changes made to /system, or the like, (including, but not limited to, App installs, file modifications, deletions, renames, etc) are not permanent and are lost at power off/on. Even if you have root, but lost Write Protection, any apps you've installed that need to write to system can't permanently save their changes (you have to re-do every time your phone powers off/on), and any Root type app, or app that gets installed to /system after WP is enabled will be lost at power off/on.
If you are on 4.4. and use SlapMyMoto/MotoWpNoMo, but later take the OTA to 4.4.2, you might keep root but Write Protection will be re-enabled with no way to disable it.
Due to fixes and changes in 4.4.2, the Root and Disable Write Protection processes that worked on 4.4 and lower, no longer work on 4.4.2. And don't expect anything for 4.4.2 for a while, if ever. So if the phone you buy comes with 4.4.2 pre-installed, and you have a locked bootloader you're stuck!!
This is not an issue if you have an unlocked bootloader. You can still unlock your bootloader (which disables write protection), and root (by just using a custom recovery and flashing SuperSU) no matter what rom is on your phone.
The option of buying the Bootloader Unlock Code for Non-Dev Verizon X from the Chinese site or middleman appears to have dried up. (no contact from the seller in a few days, and rumors he got caught/fired/worse)
If you really need ROOT, Write Protection Disabled, the ability to tether on an unlimited data plan, then you really should consider getting the Dev Edition X for Verizon, as you can unlock its bootloader (without voiding warranty), root it (no matter what rom is on the phone), and do what you want. Especailly since to keep the unlimited data you'll need to buy the phone at Full Retail (unless you are taking an upgrade on an alternate line to the X, and then moving the X to your line)

So my Verizon S3 is getting long in the tooth. I have unlimited data (and they will have to pry this from my cold dead hands) so the Moto X seems like a great phone not to mention the off contract pricing.
My question is do I go with the DE or not? I rooted my S3 and enjoyed a basic rom but really loved having wifi tethering more than anything else. I wouldnt necessarily want to root the regular x since it has great software going for it already. Plus I would like to customize the phone as well and with the DE you can't right?
Just seeing what some peoples opinions are and why they made the decision to get the phone they did and if you would do it differently. Also, do you think the phone will go on sale again soon? I know the edu discount is running but its currently only $10 off the regular price. I have to figure that soon they will try and purge these with the supposed replacement coming end of summer. Just wondering if anyone has any inside info

Sorry if that came out wrong. I meant customizing as in MotoMaker customizing. I believe the DE's only come in white/black woven correct? No options for wood backs, accents, etct?

Correct. The DE version comes only as black front, woven white back, and silver accents (camera ring, and buttons), with 32 Gig, and an unlockable bootloader. Don't like the colors? You can do something like get a dbrand skin, or use a case.
If you want to tether on an unlimited data plan, you need to root and disable write protection.
If you want to ROOT and disable write protection, get a DE. Unlocking its bootloader is easy (codes are available directly from Moto), doesn't void the warranty, disables write protection, and ensures you can root any android version/ROM moto and vzw push.
On Verizon, the Retail and Moto Maker X has a locked bootloader that can't be unlocked (unless by some miracle that person selling via the Chinese web site should ever get out of hot water and start selling the codes again). The exploits used to Root and Disable Write Protection on Android 4.4 and lower for the X with locked bootloader have been patched/blocked with 4.4.2. So if you have 4.4.2 on your phone you can't root, and write protection can not be disabled (meaning any changes you could make should you root, would be lost at power off/on). If you have 4.4, the processes are more complex to perform, then you must block any OTA if you want to keep root and write protection disabled.
If you are on an unlimited data plan, you'll need to buy at full retail price anyway. So, it comes down to a $50 price difference between a 32gig Moto Maker and Developer Edition (based on today's prices). Moto Maker you can customize the looks, but will have locked bootloader that you can't root if you have 4.4.2, or want 4.4.2 or future roms. I would also recommend getting DE. I have retail and lucked out getting an unlock code from the Chinese middleman, but that's no longer possible. I also have unlimited data and if I were in your shoes, I would get the DE. Yes, it sucks they won't let you customize it (WHY THE HELL NOT?!) but if you want guaranteed root and unlock, go DE. Plus, DE gets 32GB

I agree about the (WHY THE HELL NOT?!) question? Makes no sense except maybe it helps the idiot Verizon employees know the difference! haha. But yeah sounds like the DE is the way to go. Now just wondering when the next sale will be so the DE will drop below $400!
There are some videos and people selling different backs.
I'm a lucky MotoMaker version that got unlocked. If the DE edition had just been plain black or white I would have chose it though.
DE for sure. MotoMaker is overrated in my opinion and the DE will have a better resale value down the line. Plus the ease of mind of always having easy root.

unless an exploit comes out in the future (but i think everybody is pessimistic about this), the locked versions can't downgrade and can't root 4.4.2.
so you need either an unlocked version, or a locked version pre-4.4.2
And no....don't downgrade. You could easily brick your phone.

Oh, so you definitely got the at&t model?? On a plan, or paid up front???
If on a plan, you could try to sell it anyway, and put that towards dev edition.....or live without root...or return it.

Actually I'm not sure I need root. I only rooted my S3 to get rid of touchwiz, but this stock android might be ok. Only app I use that needs root is file manager and drivedroid. And I want to disable the camera shutter sounds
I'd like to put CM11 on there but looks like motox isn't well supported by CM anyway.

The Moto x definitely doesn't need to be rooted, but you may regret it later if you can't.

No one is really in the market for a moto x unless you sell it for dirt cheap. You don't really need to root this device it's great without but even better with root. You can disable the camera shutter sound from the camera menu. Es file explorer is a great alternative? But if you want return it and get the T-Mobile version its unlocked. This phone has been really great.

Don't confuse bootloader unlock with SIM-Unlock though.
You can pay a small fee and get your AT&T X unlocked to use on other GSM carriers....AT&T also might provide you with the code if you meet certain criteria. Bootloader unlock is another story. AT&T forbids Motorola from giving out unlock codes for their branded phones. Currently the ONLY possibility for unlocking the bootloader on an AT&T X is through the China Middleman.

Thanks, I pretty much figured in this day and age that the SIM could be unlocked or I'd have bought the unlocked one to start with. What bothers me most is I do not use/abuse root on any of the devices I own and am only interested in doing so on my X to run the Titanium Backup app I purchased to run on my older phone. I guess I knew back then the app needed root to run but since that used to never be an issue due to the collective experience I have at my fingertips here at XDA-Developers.com. it never dawned on my that a day would come where root would be taken away from me never to be returned.

I am a long time verizon subscriber. I am on a Nationwide Talk & Text plan with my family. I am not the primary line on the account. I still have unlimited data that I would like to hold on to. My Moto X (1st Gen DE) just took a swim in the washing machine so it's time to upgrade. I would ideally like to get the 64GB N6 from google or moto, but I would settle for the official VZW version if the non-VZW complicates things too much.
So here are my questions:
I know that if I buy from Google/Moto, then the phone will be listed as a non-verizon device. I have seen people talk about how this will make it difficult to change plan options. Is this only the case if my line were the primary line (it isn't)? Or will this cause issues for my family members too if they decide to change things?
I have a nano-sim already from my MotoX. Would activation be easiest if I just popped that into my N6? I know people have had to fight with activating new SIM cards, I just want to know if I have anything in store for me with using my existing SIM card.

1st question: I'm not sure.
2nd question: No activation required. Just put your MotoX SIM in your N6.
3rd answer to unasked question: Be aware that only the IMEI for VZW devices are white listed. This means you won't receive a BYOD discount if you activate a non VZW version.

Technically VZW reserves the right to give you trouble anytime it's not a VZW device. Interestingly enough the new legal precendence requires carriers to allow their devices to be carrier unlocked, but does not require them to accept devices on to their network whenever they see fit. Its sort of hit and miss. There are a lot of folks who have the GPE version and no issues, others that have had a lot of issue. The "safest" bet is to get a VZW N6 at retail and roll with it.
SIMs are typically swappable, so long as they are the same form factor. I just got my N6 Friday and took the SIM out of my old phone, put it right in my N6. The switch over was without issue.

Apparently the BYOD discount (technically just "out-of-contract" discount, apparently) doesn't apply on my old NationWide plan, so this isn't really an issue unless we upgrade to MoreEverything. I don't remember whether it is possible to upgrade the plan and keep unlimited data.

SIMs are typically swappable, so long as they are the same form factor. I just got my N6 Friday and took the SIM out of my old phone, put it right in my N6. The switch over was without issue.

Both the MotoX and N6 have nano-sims, so no cutting required. Just out of curiosity, are you running the VZW or GPE?

No, you'll loose unlimited data if you change to the Edge plan.

I think I will go with the unlocked version from Moto. If I have issues with Verizon, then I can return it within 14 days and go back to the VZW Edition.
