Smoother scrolling - disable HW overlay - Huawei Ascend P7

It's taken me a long time to understand this to be true. It works particularly well on this phone with B126 firmware.
I've read a little here and there but I get things more through experience.
Go to Developer options.
Leave Force GPU rendering unchecked.
Scroll down and check Disable HW overlays.
The difference in the smoothness of scrolling is huge.
Try it and hit thanks if it works for you...I'd like to know!

Thanks a lot, your suggestion works great on P7L-10 B127:good:

My P7-L10 reacts better with HW overlay ON

Actually it works so well, I've done it on my P6 also.
Where both phones had stutter issues, they rarely ever do now, particularly when scrolling around the home screens.
It's very good.

I could not tell a difference, after the check and then rebooting the device is deselected again .

No one confirms that it is not checked after reboot ? :cyclops:

B133SP01 here and option is deselected after reboot too.

Yes, it deselects on reboot.
Select for much smoother, more consistent scroll rate.

Works on Huawei Mate 9 as well
I tried it on my Mate 9 and it worked fine! The scrolling choppiness was driving me nuts so this tip made using the phone much much better! Thank you!

May be a "noob" question but what exactly are the benefits of disabling scrolling cache?
In the newest build of aokp I noticed much smoother scrolling in the settings page and in facebook..like butter smooth. With it enabled its choppy. In lots of apps where there is scrolling there is potential for smoother scrolling. As you scroll a page android builds cache for the next time you scroll...this process hinders the phones ability to scroll smoothly in many cases

Isn't that counter intuitive? Having stuff in cache is supposed to make it quicker isn't it?

You would think so, but scrolling cache is only beneficial for the next time you scroll through that exact same screen or page. However, it slows down the first time you scroll through the page while it is building the cache.

How to eliminate ALL scrolling lag and YouTube/HD video stuttering

Google's project butter is the best thing to ever happen to android in terms of visual polish but I was curious as to why it still was jittery despite all its freaking gpu/cpu cores.
Turns out full gpu acceleration is not on by default so I went into development in the settings and forced 2d gpu acceleration. Disabling the overlays does more harm than good it seems.
This thing is BUTTER. Try this in rom toolbox, before scrolling was jittery and after it was perfect. Same with tapatalk.
What it breaks:
Google movies
Moon reader+ fonts

Should work out for the most part, but some apps out there may not function properly with HW acceleration.
Ah, that works much much better. Before it seemed only a little faster than my old Kindle Fire ICS Rom, but now it's flying.

Disabling this also fixed my stuttering problems on YouTube app and 720p movies stored internally. Don't really plan on using Google movies that much anyway.

Since it's so easy to change (no reboot even required) it shouldn't be a big problem for most people. Its a very dramatic change in fluidity and silkyness you wont forget to turn it back on.
Now I just gotta figure out what's making apex redraw

Yes, there is no picture in the movie. I don't think overlays need to be turned off for speed, overlays should be supported in HW by the GPU as well. So if you force GPU 2D rendering, that is enough to really speed up the UI.
Or maybe I am wrong?

It seems like disabling he overlays goes more harm than good, forcing 2d acceleration seems to be the best route.
Oh and this will use more ram, but when was the last time you ran out of ram anyways.

Funny seeing this tweak brought up here. We went through 6+ months on prime messing with that tweak. I believe it more so just enables older apps to use hardware acceleration. Most newer apps and jellybean rom in general already uses hardware acceleration in the coding by default. Regardless of what you see in developers settings. This was the case in ICS. Likely the same with jellybean also. Alot of developers chimed in on the subject that we might be seeing more of a placebo effect. It likely does work but for older coded apps n such. Most new apps should already use hardware acceleration by default(regardless of what developer setting is showing). Some apps will have issues with it though. Some apps not made to support hardware acceleration so just keep a tally of what apps act up and add them to the op. The new NVISION app for example. At first it messed up with that setting. Cut it off and the app works fine. They eventually updated the app so the setting wouldn't mess it up anymore.
It'll also raise your 2d scores in quadrant, I believe. This will drain battery faster though. I know on prime, it was hard to tell if this was really working or not. To me, it seemed to be working. But down the road I cut it off and things were just the same. So who knows..lol. I know Y nexus 7 doesn't need it. Give it a shot if you experiencing lag somewhere and see of it helps. There's a good chance though that its just a placebo effect. Thouroughly testing needs to be done with it off n on. Jellybean by default already has hardware acceleration for apps n other things. Regardless of what developers option show.

No placebo effect here, this genuinely works even in new apps especially tapatalk and rom toolbox, you should try those with the setting off and then on. Those two apps were bugging me the most. I'm sure it will drain the battery more but I already get three days of use out of this thing anyways.

There are answers in forum. Do you even read? Or just post new threads with questions???
I see you are new here. See this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmvCpR45LKA
P.S. When you allready opened it, let me answer. But you do not deserve it, you are lazy.
Turn OFF Powersaving mode. Swipe down notification and turn it off. It put your CPU to 800MHz instead of 1GHz. If that do not help, look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2092627
Because of usless posts like yours, the one with answers are gone on 4th-5th page. And you can't find it!
its has nothing to do with power saving mode...even clearing ram does not help.the lag is noticable only few times but wen it happens one has to turn the device off and reboot.

However, I have assigned the Screen Off app to Swipe Down gesture of the Nova launcher.

Touchscreen has to stay awake. So yes it will drain some small amount more. But you can always disable it if you dont like/need it.

Tips and Tricks to improve your USER EXPERIENCE on S5

:thumbup::thumbup: P.S -> THIS THREAD IS CREATED TO ENHANCE USER EXPERIENCE NOT TO CREATE A BATTLE BETWEEN S5 AND M8
Guys, even after new touchwiz. S5 animations seems slow.. yet the device is super fast.. so my tips would just help you! Thanks to look into it
1. Go to settings>developer options(if not present go to about phone and tap the build no. 5 times)> transition animation scale and shift the value to (0.5 or 0)
Do it for windows animation scale
And animator duration scale too!
2. Disable s-voice from Galaxy s5 it would make u go to homescreen super fast..
To do that double click your home button.. register s-voice go to menu(by pressing multitasking button for 3 seconds and then untick disable s-voice open via home key..
3. You can also use a custom launcher if you don't want touchwiz!
4. If rooted then try cross breeder!
P.s. > I will update it with more things.
5. If you're rooted and have tons of apps, then install greenify app from playstore and hibernate your apps.. this way you can improve battery life and functionality
6. Do a factory reset, which may solve your problem.
Hit Thanks if I helped!

The truth is that people don't like TW animations, but they don't understand the difference between lag and slow animation. So they complain but the excuse is ridiculous.

How about this novel idea....if you don't like Touchwiz and/or you think this phone lags, then simply don't buy it or return it and leave us happy owners alone.
And for the love of God, please stop comparing this phone to the M8. They are different, period.

Ok... so which phone should we compare it to then? The S4? M8 is clearly the most direct and similar competitor for the S5 at the moment and they shouldn't be compared to each other? Now that sounds pretty stupid to me...

I didn't notice any performance issues relating to the launcher for exactly that reason - Nova is one of the first things I install!
I am actually using ADW at the moment though because I saw there was an update since I'd last installed it on another device ages ago and fancied road testing any changes - I'm loving the 'Wall' animation on the app drawer, and people who've had a go on my phone have commented on how slick it looks

Installing another weather app (or HD widgets or similar) and installing a calendar widget from the play store will fix 2 of those 3.
For the other one, I just put a shortcut to the app on my home screen and go into S health that way.
Each to their own though.

I wouldn't recommend crossbreeder or any of such scripts on our phone.
It won't make any difference and most likely cause higher battery consumption.
