T-Mobile Uncarrier 7.0 Wifi Calling - Nexus 5 General

T-Mobile just announced that everyphone they sell from here on will be wifi-calling capable.
From this I assume it will probably an apps, or something that is cooked into the ROM that can be easily ported? I think they are still selling the Nexus 5 too. So maybe we will be blessed with wifi calling soon. Any thought on this? Am I too optimistic?
I am a former G2 user, and I seriously miss wifi calling.

its part of the framework, not just an app. but, install the new hangouts and new hangouts dialer, then make phonecalls via data(wifi if need be).

Had the same thoughts, my wife bought an N5 through Tmo when we switched. How does the N5 get VoLTE.
As it was mentioned above, will the new Hangouts essentially enable VoLTE. Interesting that the new APK is rolling out now same day as Tmo makes this announcement.
Or, will we have to want for Android L?

I called t-mobile about this and they confirmed the Nexus 5 was supported. They said to connect to my wifi network and I should see a new icon indicating calls are being routed over wifi. I tried this, and saw no new icon. They said to try restarting the phone and connect to wifi again. Tried this, and still no new icon. Not so sure the N5 will be supporting this feature after all. Hoping it will be. I like the new hangouts dialer, but it still uses my google voice number and not my phone number which is a pain for people whom I didnt give the google voice number to in advance.

i wish the would just open source the shiz already so that we can add it ourselves. In a perfect world i suppose.....

n5 is not supported. problem about calling customer service is that they dont know much of whats going on. tmobile is not allowed to add any software to nexus devices, they ALL come free of carriers software.

I read on the news that T Mobile phones are getting OTA today. The most favorable scenario thus will be an OTA for N5 with wifi-calling soon. The worst case.. oh well, with like 20 phones that has wifi-calling baked in, there must be a feasible way to scoop that baby out, right?

Question is it possible to port your tmobile number to GV & it'll show up using your main number while making calls via hangout dialer instead of using a Gv number?

Also, does anyone know if the new voip feature in hangouts will subtract from my minutes? i think i remember it doing so when i had the s4 and enabled wifi calling (though i do realize t-mos wifi calling and hangouts voip are 2 different things)

no nexus 5 will ever get a tmo ota.

Maybe a software tweak could enable the feature.

This could really help the 100 min voice prepaid $30/mo plan.

I use
I use gv phone (playstore). Works great. That is all.

So, no wifi calling for N5 (yet?). Ah well, freedom has a price, I guess.
Also, guys, I believe at this point people already know there are alternatives to wificalling. Do they work? Yes. Are they satisfactory for everyone? Doubt it. Edit: Even if they are, the more choices everyone has, the better it is.

The N5 will probably never get wifi calling. Why? because our updates come straight from google, tmo doesnt touch them at all. Sorry to rain on your parade people, but it just isnt happening.
Though as a consolation i have gotten a hold of the voip update to hangouts, and it works like a charm. My 100 min a month plan has just became unlimited

Sad—they shouldn’t limit this to crippled phones. If the iPhone can do this, which gets updates from Apple, a Google Nexus should be able to do this as well.

nexus can do it, without issue. just need to use an app for it. and there are other apps available for it. and now you can do it using your gvoice number, providing you update your hangouts and install the hangouts dialer.

that's a (small) shame.. I was able to use Wifi Calling once when out of the country (cell radio turned off)... saved me a ton of $$ when I needed to make a few important phone calls.
oh wait.. let me over-react... OMG that's it I will NEVER buy this phone... just kidding.
If there was ever such a thing as a good carrier app, this would be it. Shame, but not unexpected.
Really wish tmobile would find a way to get it on the market so all tmobile phones could download/update it.
Sorry for my ignorance, but what setting up Google voice with your phone number? Is that possible? Just curious since I was looking forward to this feature too. (Never used wifi calling)
Not a surprise since Wi-Fi calling only works on GB ROMs, it doesn't works on ICS/JB ROMs.

It's working on ICS roms. I'm reasonably certain that as soon as Tmo releases a JB rom with this in it, we'll see it ported to other devices/roms. I'm definitely hoping we see one for this device at some point as well. Won't stop me from getting this phone, but I'm hoping eventually we get the goods.
this is a deal breaker for me, as i am frequently in large buildings without reception.
there is no way for anyone besides tmo to add wifi calling. custom roms will not fill this gap. google voice kind of by not with the carrier number.

Not entirely true. Its built into the SGS 3 T-Mobile JellyBean leaks but it is not a simple task at all to get into other ROMs like it was in GB... it is now built into settings with a bunch of libs and such. Not many devs look at it as something worth spending days on to figure it out and code it into a custom ROM. Unfortunately of course.

Same! It's great for those who need it, but I am not in that group.
It just means this device is going to be stock on T-mobile so likely they will get updates just as fast as the Play Store version (it may be the same firmware minus Google Wallet).
It is a shame... when I went to China I could still talk to people at home for free which was amazing. And it helps in large buildings.
This is still entirely possible, without using anything developed by T-Mobile. It's not ideal for everyone, but I will be posting a comprehensive guide one of these days. I've been promising people for months, and once mid-terms are over, I'll be able to deliver.
Well using a sip account over WiFi will accomplish the same thing
The way I see it, this is actually a good thing. If they were to support WiFi calling on the Nex4, then it would need to go through them to get updates. If we got them from Google, then WiFi calling would break, and **** storm of complaints would hit TMobile support lines. This sucks, but i havent used it in over a year and to me direct updates > WiFi calling.
Agreed that it's only a small shame.
I'm not the one for long phone chats, anyway.
Here is the solution:
1. Port # to Google Voice
2. Setup a voip.ms account with a DID, setup failovers for no answer to forward to TMo # after 3 rings, unreachable, forward to TMo # after 3 rings.
3. Install csipsimple and register SIP account/voip.ms
4. Install Google Voice app and select "Use GV to make all calls"
When making a call, it prompts if you want to use voip.ms or cellular (Tmo). Incoming calls get routed to Google Voice, route to voip.ms, if not answered after 3 rings/14 seconds it forwards to TMo #. I get my TMo prepaid card for $28.50 a month (callingmart.com), I have the $30/month TMo plan (Unlimited 4G, unlimited text and 100min). I use the 100min up first then resort to voip calling the rest of the month if needed. voip.ms DID is .99 cents per month, and each minute on voip.ms is 1cent per minute, compared to 10 cent per minute after 100min on TMo. So I basically pay $30 per month after tax and after voip.ms fee's, insane.

Using SIP is not the same thing as WiFi calling. I think most people here know how to setup a VOIP account but T-mobile's version was fully integrated into their account/phone #.

Where on a phone's specs do you see if it has one or two radios?

I am starting to get concerned about the lack of two radios in the VZW version that I ordered.
Why are you concerned?

Once you can get root it's trivial to add by editing your build.prop (at least it was for the international htc one m7), though I disabled it again because it requires much more energy
Every phone is going to deal with this in VzW, if thats your concern, change your company

[Q] How do you enable T-Mobile WiFi Calling on Nexus 6?

I purchased my Nexus 6 on the Google Play Store and wanted to use the T-Mobile Wifi Calling feature. I know it works with my plan & SIM card because it had been plugged into a iPhone 6 before but now that's in the Nexus 6, I can't find any option to select the feature or does it just work automatically with no indicators?
Not sure this is an option with Nexus devices. I know coming from the Note line it was ROM dependent.. Wasn't supported by most unless it was based off the stock Samsung touchwiz ROM, so it's not inherent in android, but baked in by manufacturers/carriers

Wifi Calling was one of my favorite features of the Galaxy S3, I am glad this is coming to the N6 sometime next year. T-Mobile isn't the best in my area so this will come in handy big time.
And...of course you already can do wi fi calling with hangouts/google voice.
Really?
I bought this phone even though I don't have t-mobile signal literally in an area the size of a dime on a map. I can walk a block and get 4g, nothing at my house, so fine wifi calling, it has that, t-mobile has that. UH big NO. Godamnit T-mobile for misleading me. I wish some developer could squeeze this out overnight, cause I can't use my phone from home until then. Oh well, *shoots self in foot.

They said I have to have 1 bar for it to work, I don't have that, so I asked about their broadband cell station, they said THAT uses wifi calling to work, how freekin stupid.
Honestly, I'm still happy to not have Verizon, but at least they worked here. Seems like false advertising, no where did they say it won't work with wifi calling, in fact there were ads all over the site for that very thing. EERRR. *Grinding Teeth, I have to go like 2 blocks to get signal. No big deal, I mean internet and messaging are redundant, if anyone knows of a way to forward my text messages to my e-mail I would appreciate that. Thank you., pooton, 5 generations removed.

IMS is still the current standard, and is still open source, regardless if that particular project was abandoned. The basis of IMS is still listed in that project.
UMA is the legacy standard. I keep an old Blackberry Curve because of the ability for seemless handoffs between UMA and cellular signals.

Greetings from the Bay Area. I stuck my Verizon SIM in my T-Mobile Nexus 6 and I couldn't figure out how to tell if HD Voice was working (since it was too early to call my wife), though when I made a call it switched to 1x in the notification bar. That's a bad sign. I'll do some more testing today and report back. I was especially curious about this as I too I find HD Voice to be awesome on my iPhone 6.
-Collin-
if its anything like tmobiles hd calling, which works on the n6 btw, both phones have to have it before it works. if only one of the 2 phones in the conversation has it, it wont work.
VZW user here. I can confirm that all of the advanced features are not working at this time. In fact the phone is not even capable of simultaneous voice and data.
This is true of several new phones on Verizon including the Droid Turbo, which of course is the carrier locked 5.2 inch version of the Nexus 6. In all likelyhood the Nexus 6 will not see VoLTE or simultaneous voice and data unless Verizon finds it in their hearts to get an update to us N6 users that will turn those things on for us.
I knew all this going in but i hold out hope that Verizon will carry the phone, which would mean an update will eventually hit.
However, should they not carry it I will be ok with the phone as is.

the phone is very capable of phone service and data at the same time. and the phone is compatible to volte. on all other providers besides verizon, it can get voice and data at the same time(verizon is cdma and doesnt support it). that said, verizons volte is just starting to make it out. when you get volte in your area, you will be able to make calls and get data at the same time.

Until Verizon issues an update for the Nexus 6, the feature won't work, period.

Just wait. If it's a feature you need, you'll have to wait until Verizon officially supports the device.

Verizon phones have had data and voice at the same time in the past, but some newer android phones (Nexus 6, Moto X 2014, G3) don't have it, yet. VoLTE is a bit different, but also limited to certain devices.

It it software based e.g. is there an .apk on the droid turbo that allows for it to work? or is it on the core android [system] level that needs to be baked in at the time of building the rom? Obviously where I am going with this is if it's something installed, on the droid turbo for example, can we just lift off those files off and work to get it work in AOSP land?
No there isn't. The Turbo doesn't support it yet. Unfortunately you're going to have to be patient.

you cant "enable" it. its automatically enabled if its in your area. problem is that both caller and receiver need to have this for it to work.

Gotcha ... Thanks for responding. I've got one coworker that's on T-Mobile as well and their device must have it as well because when I talk to them the call is so loud and clear I have to lower the volume! lol

lol, its the same thing when im talking with my father
If the N6 supports volte and we are using it before vzw sales the device directly, is Google able to help us activate this feature? Bc i dont see vzw giving an update to phones that are unrecognized and showing as non vzw devices.
Sooo.... I am wondering if volte support will ever work on those of us who chose not to wait til vzw releases their version of the nexus 6?
May be the price we had to pay to get a non tramp stamped nexus without any carrier customizations and bloat.....

I'm just happy my Nexus 6 hasnt been violated by Verizon. They never got their dirty little hands on it. It's so nice having a phone with No bloatware.
Verizon will eventually carry the Nexus 6 and will eventually send out the Software update which enables VoLTE. I'm not sure if we will get that update? But we shall see what happens

Enhance messaging gimped on TMO?

I'm a little confused about enhanced messaging on T-Mobile. I had an S7 edge before this and enhanced messaging worked cross carrier. I had the S7 on ATT and this chick at work has a note 5 on Sprint. Worried like a charm.
Then I got the Note 7 from T-Mobile.
Now the only time it works is with the only other person I know who has a recent Samsung and is also on T-Mobile. Otherwise it just goes through as a normal MMS.
How could T-Mobile restrict it like that if it's a Samsung feature? It's the stock messenger. Is there a way around this?
The pic with all green icons is the dude I know on T-Mobile.
The other pic is what hers like like now and no longer works. It's just a regular text now with her.
I get video calling not working. That's usually restricted to the carrier but messaging did work and has farted out.
I'm confused as sh*t.

I was also scratching my head on this one. I noticed the same thing.
Bad news...
Well after many calls and a lot of people at T-Mobile not knowing what they are taking about, I finally got an answer. T-Mobile has, in fact, gimped enhanced messaging for use between only T-Mobile users.
In my case, that is only one prison in my contacts so I'm going to disable it. Bad choice for an "Uncarrier" that's supposed to be different from the big carriers.
It is a carrier feature. It was added to the higher end t-mobile phones as an update. My kids both have non Samsung phones and they also have the advanced messaging.

Does advanced messaging work when using textra? Or do you need to use the stock app?

It's not a carrier developed feature. I had an non-branded international S7 Edge and enhanced messaging was baked in and worked cross carrier perfectly. I called to ask Samsung why the change. They said enhanced messaging is a feature they ship to carriers pre-installed. Once in the hands of the carriers, they are free to change as they see fit.
So they did gimp the feature to only work with only TMO users.
Ahh I see advanced is tmobile , enhanced is Samsung. https://newsroom.t-mobile.com/news-and-blogs/advanced-messaging-blog.htm

Where is this advanced messaging? Is it in the stock Samsung messenger? Or somewhere else?

Wait. Hold up.
They are saying that's it's only for other TMO users but their website says differently. It says in black and white across carriers.
I don't think they know what the **** they are taking about.

It works like iMessage. Videos and photos don't get compressed like when sending a normal MMS.
I never even knew we get there. Since T-mobiles site advertises it, cant we do something to get it to work with all carriors?

That's what I'm working on now. They finally admitted they don't know why it's not working. They also acknowledged it says on the website that it does state that it works cross carrier only that's not the case with the Note 7. The guy I'm working with now send way more intelligent than the other people I've been dealing with.
Hopefully some good news soon. I'll keep ya updated.
I was unaware of this. I will look into it as well

Yes, please contact them with the link i posted earlier to their site saying it works cross carrier. If we don't speak up, they aren't going to do anything.
I literally can't even find this setting anywhere on the phone. Where is it located? Thank you.

Here are my options.
And my version number says Version 3.0.97
Edit: I opened a trouble ticket on 9/30 with the guy who handles the devs at TMO and they said give them at least 3 days before calling. But he said he was going to call anyway so not too worry about that part. So I'm hoping by Wednesday or Thursday, I'll hear something back.
