Moto G (2nd gen) and SD Card Maximum Storage Size? - G 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The Moto G (2nd Generation) specifications say that it supports MicroSD cards up to 32GB of size.
http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_moto_g_(2014)-6647.php
Does this mean I cannot use a Samsung EVO 64GB MicroSDXC and get the full capacity? Or is this 32GB size a limitation of the SDHC format, which is why the larger formats is SDXC?
I want to know if I should be fine ordering and using the full 64GB of this SD card or if I should just get a cheaper, 32GB MicroSD.
Thanks!

It wont work

32GB is the supposed max, but I've heard if you format a 64GB SD to a file system that isn't exFAT (like FAT32 or something) then it may be able to work in the Moto G. This is because exFAT requires a license from Microsoft and Motorola most likely didn't want to bother paying that fee for a budget handset.

Will 32 gb memory card work fine without any issue

AFAIK it will work fine with FAT32 file system.
I have 32 GB card but haven't tested yet cause it's file system is exFAT and there is data on it

I have a 64GB card in mine and everything seems OK. I let the phone format the card, which comes to around 59.03GB after formatting.

I will be picking this phone up in the morning and having seen it can use a 64GB card above (someone can verify that) then is there a recommended one that someone recommends? If not which 32GB card would be recommended to buy with this as I am not sure which brand is reliable!

I always suggest Sandisk and Samsung for flash.

Samsung is probably best for microSD. It also depend on the speed rating.

Cheers, had gone with the Sandisk one as I use their USB Sticks and never had an issue.

I bought a 128GB SanDisk Mobile Ultra MicroSDXC class 10 card from Amazon UK and it works perfectly now. The phone formatted it, so I didn't even need to do that on my PC. One word of warning: after putting 80GB of music, videos, etc on the card the mediaserver process started causing massive battery drain. To fix this, I went to settings: apps: all : media storage: clear data. After a scan (be patient, it can take a while) everything runs smoothly now. It's awesome having so much available without needing to mess around with OTG, etc.

What's the SD card file system after being formated by the phone?
TIA

I have sandisk ultra 32gb and no problems so far!!

I put my 64GB Sandisk Ultra from my Note 2 in the G 2014 and it works. Storage showed 59.46GB total and the music I have on it played fine. Sounded a lot better than my Nexus 5 with those front facing speakers.
I bought and set up the G with T-Mobile's $30 plan for an older gentleman at work who's been rocking the same flip phone for 14 years. I'm amazed with how much he's getting for $180. I think it's a great phone for his first foray into android. They sure have come a long way in a few short years. My first android was the Epic 4g and the new Moto G is a million times nicer than that was.

32 GB card not working...
Hi All
I have purchased a moto g 2 gen few days ago in India. I put my 32 GB Kingston class 4 SD card in the phone and got detected 1st time. After some time my phone started showing damaged card message. I reformatted the card in pc but still the problem was there. But when i inserted a 16GB Transcend class 4 card. It worked most of the time. It was showing the same message before but after restarting it is working ok now. I contacted motorola executive on chat, he told me only class 6 to class 12 cards are supported in moto G 2. So tried my friends Samsung ultra class 10 card, but still my phone shows bad or damaged card message. I contacted Motorola executive again and asked him if Moto G 2 have the card detection problem like moto G LTE model. But he told me Moto G 2 gen have no such problem and i should get my phone replaced. Please help me on this issue if someone knew about it. Is this a Kitkat 4.4.4 kernal problem as in Moto G LTE or my phone device may be faulty.

You should try to format your sdcard from the phone first.

Well Thanks for you reply buddy. But I found the problem, the SD card should be as primary partition. Reformatted the card with FAT32 and primary partition and it worked !!!!!!!

Razr M can use 64GB MicroSDXC card

I purchased a SanDisk 64GB MicroSDXC memory card on Amazon.com, formatted directly on my Razr M, and it works perfectly!!! Now my Razr M has more total memory than my friend's I-phone 5 which he spent $400 for (64GB model). Plus when a larger GB microSD card is available, I can format it and expand my memory even more!!
This is correct - I posted the same in the Moto forums a few weeks ago, but apparently the RAZR M cannot utilize a higher than Class 6 card for the addition R/W speeds. I got a Class 10 but just letting people know it isn't necessary.
Literally ordered that exact one off Amazon right when I read this post lol thank you!

I love it when an iPhone user tries to explain why it's a bad thing to have sd card support. They usually end up stumbling all over their own words and thoughts, never really coming to a coherent or reasonable explanation.

How much did you pay for the microSD card?
So in other words we can go up to 64GB SD card ?
But speed wise we ca go whatever but it can only utilized the speed of the Class 6 Cards ?

Does any one know the actual max speed it can read and write in mb/s
Reason i am asking they have multiple speeds of the Class 6
Older Sandisk Class 6 are slower than Newer ones and same is true for Samsungs Cards.
Also does it read U1 standard Cards ?
No success so far with 64GB card

I tried this with my Verizon Razr M, Android version 4.1.1. After I install the card, the Mount SD Card command is available, but after I choose it, I get a message that says Blank SD Card and the Unmount and Erase (Format) commands aren't available. I've tried with two phones and two cards, which makes it less likely that the results are due to a defective card.
Have the people who have succeeded had phones that were unlocked or rooted or are there some other steps needed to make the 64 gb MicroSDXC work? I've read suggestions to reformat the card from a PC to FAT, but others that say the card should only be formatted using the phone. Thanks.

This poster says 32gb is max for the HD? Without long term problems. The two phones should behave the same.
Just got the 64GB myself. Writes at 6Mbps, but reads at 25Mbps. Pretty snazzy so far. Going to try filling it up and letting it read the card, since that's what made my Droid X always crap out on higher capacity cards, lol.
Filled the card, no problems like my old Droid X had. Not bad doubling my phone storage for $35

Seems the HD is different from our m in the sd card dept.
I have the Samsung 64g mb-mgcgb & it gives these file copy results: (3gb cwr bu folder)
Fastest
Aroma (philz 6): ~10mb/s write , fast fast! read
Root explorer: ~6 , fast
Osx sd card mount (not AFT): same
Philz sd mount : ~ 3, Slow
So much for that sd card! I have errors coming out my ears!

I got a sandisk 64gb UHC1. The red and grey kind.

Ok. I took back the Samy to Frys, found a Plextor (sandisk) at Bestbuy, the slow write, half price version. It performs as fast on our M. It is class 10 & the card has the identical markings of the $99 Sandisk.
USE custom recovery or safestrap to format from the xfat to default. You can use the "phone up" storage erase but the recovery works better for those on my sd swap: do formatting & copying while in recovery. Otherwise you have to reflash the swap.
I had problems getting windows or osx to format the full 64 gb.
I wonder if formatting only on the phone might be key to trouble free use?

Heck Yes!

What 64GB card are you using?

What make and model 64GB card are you using?
I just bought a 64GB SanDisk Class 10 that comes formatted exFAT (curse Microsoft with their damned proprietary filesystem and convincing gullible vendors to license it. I'm looking at you Sharp). I stuck it in the Atrix HD and formatted it when prompted at first boot with it in. It was mounted for a bit, but I couldn't write to it and whenever I launched Settings and selected Storage Settings would crash. I just re-partitioned and reformatted it FAT32 in my laptop using a combination of diskpart and Acronis DiskDirector 11 Home. At the moment I am waiting for my files from my old Lexar to be copied to it before I stick it in the Atrix HD again. Will suck if the HD has problems with this card. Can't complain about the brand as SanDisk is one of the inventors of SD cards, including MicroSD.
I'll report back what my experience is.
I thought the Atrix HD was only compatible with SDHC cards (thus 32 GB maximum capacity).
The cards that are 64 GB (and higher) are SDXC, and not compatible.
I got this one when it was on sell a week ago for $43.50 shipped.

Yeah, it isn't just the reviews; Motorola's specs state "Up to 32 GB microSD," but as was pointed out before what they really mean is MicroSDHC cards. However, as these are all extensions of the SD format one would hope that SDXC cards would work. I've seen a few other reports of people using 64GB cards with the HD w/o problems. I'm just curious as to what has been the experience of the people here as they are generally a good deal more tech savvy than on the other forums.
So far the only hiccup I've had is that it wouldn't format the card. Also twice I've tried to unmount and then remount the card, after which the phone thought the card had mounted, but it wouldn't use it. A reboot fixed this each time.

Moto G (XT-1068) killed my microsd card

Hi guys, I recently bought a Moto G from Flipkart. After one week of use the phone has killed my sd card. My sd card no longer works and I am planning to buy a new one. I have a few questions
1) Which SD Card should I buy? Are class 10 cards supported? Any bugs? I read somewhere that Moto G has compatibility issues with Samsung Evo microsd cards. Is that true?
2) I read on a lot of online forums that Moto G LTE (1st gen) has a serious issue with sd cards. People are reporting dead sd cards or sd cards don't work on their device (especially class 10). Does Moto G suffer from this issue ?

Also if you are experiencing issues with class 10, try lower classes, you won't notice that big of a difference in speeds till Class 6.

It works fine with Samsung Tab Pro and Xperia Z Ultra, but G4 cannot use this memory. It's either not show up or suddenly unmounted.
Let us know if you find a 128GB that your VS986 is happy with.
I use the 64GB version of that exact PNY card in another phone without any issues for several weeks months now., then bought a Samsung 128GB because I needed a larger card.

Sony's firmware has a own sd card knowing system. I have used my Xperia Z1 for 2 years, whenever I plug a new sd card it was offering me format it or it was scanning almost 5 minutes.
I suggest you format it first ExFat then format it FAT32 in windows. After you plug in the phone format it in settings- storage-format sdcard.
If your sdcard is not broken or it had not harware problem, above instructions will fix all problems...

I know a few people who use 64GB and 128GB microSDs from PNY for some time now. No issues so far. Chances are that some of them were fake. Happens everywhere. I bought a dozen of 32GB and 64GB of Samsung microSDs respectively. Two of the 32GB ones and four of the 64GB ones turned out to be obvious fake and surely enough, didn't work after a few write cycles. Also the colors didn't match, some didn't even had the S/N printed on the back. Wasn't even bough on some weird internet marketplace. I bought the from a legitimate local store in bulk.

3. If one and two fail, return to seller or RMA to PNY.

I also tried the PNY 128gbyte sd card (it was on sale). My G4 just spit it out no matter what I tried. Also an older 32 gbyte Kingston one.
What ony seems to be working is a high tier version, like the Sandisk extreme (90 MB/s)

Anybody else's SD cards keep going corrupt?

I have a 64gb Samsung Evo+ SD card, and in the two months I've owned this phone the card has become corrupt - Android recognizes that there is a card, but I cannot read/write to it. I can take the card out and put it in my PC and do a CHKDSK and get the data off of it.
Any idea what causes this? Or is the card shot?
I have exact same card and haven't run into this issue.
I had issues with my SD card on the regular E4 (Non Plus Variant), popped it into the E4 Plus and haven't had any issues. It seems Moto has some bad SD readers floating around.
I'm using that same card for a few months. No issues.
