[Q] Removing Sony's Screen Protector - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there. Is it wise to remove Sony's Screen protector and then replacing it with a tempered glass screen protector? Why or why not?
Thanks.
Note: As I have under 10 posts I cannot link to the screen protector, but here is the extension of the URL. /Ultra-thin-Protector-Anti-scratch-Shatterproof-Fingerprint/dp/B00L41KMVQ/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1410738703&sr=1-6&keywords=z1+tempered+glass
Just add amazon [.] com in front of it. Thanks.

I bought my phone used and it had some small scratches on the front side so I did exactly what you describe.
It feels "smoother" now. If you still have warranty you might not want to do it though.
Maybe you missed this thread, which has excellent information on the topic.

[Q] So I got a scratch on my screen ... what now?

Hi there.
As the title reads I got a 3mm long scratch on the display of my galaxy ... the scratch distorts the colours, so it's quite annoying once you notice it (and it's particularly annoying on brighter backgrounds) ... I have absolutely no idea how it happened, as I am using a bag for it all the while it's in my pocket to prevent it from getting scratches...
Soo, my question:
Is there anything I can do to "fix" the scratch?
Once scratch happens, then it pretty much stays there.
Sometime a screen protectors can help hide the scratches make it less noticeable. Other than that there are no way to fix it I suppose.
Good screen protector hide all scratches.

Please don't try this at home!
If the scratch isn't too deep then you may be able to polish it out with some wet/dry sandpaper.
But you may damage the touch screen if you go too deep.
Sent from my AWESOME Galaxy S
For ****s sake DO NOT take sand paper to the touch screen!! what kind of advice is that?
once scratched, that's it. if it really annoys you, you'll have to replace the screen.
Wet/dry sandpaper is how a clear coat is polished on a car. As I said if it isn't too deep then it's an option. What you are saying is that you are screwed anyway and have to replace it. If the OP is already at that point of frustration, then they could at least try before having to replace the screen.
Last resort before accepting your screen is stuffed?
At first I also thought what a silly idea to use sand paper on glass.
But after googling the web and quick research, it can be done!
Using high grit silicon carbide wet/dry sanding paper can remove scratches from glass.
Though, I wouldn't try it my self but thanks for the pointer.
here are an example of what can be done:

Screen protector I would recommend to hide the scratches is the Zagg invisible shield.
It is made of polymer that kinda adhere to the screen very tightly help smooth over scratches and make them less noticeable compare to other brand.
BIG BIG DISCLAIMER:
Zagg invisible shield is NOT for everyone. The polymer material can feel sticky and a bit soft. So be warned, it is a love hate relationship when it comes to zagg.
Well i got 2 scratches one is 5mm long the other is 8mm. Fortunately they are on the far right side, close to the bezel, so they don't really bother me at all.
You got only one small scratch, that's nothing
Even that i had the first scratches on the second day i owned the device i will still not make it look ugly with some silly shield. Im expecting a year out of this device, and don't care if it's scratched when that year is gone.
If you change your mobile phone every year then I can understand.
However, my mobile phone lasted me at least 2-3 years each. My previous two was XDA O2 > Samsung Omnia i900 and now Galaxy S

I noticed that the (super) AMOLED displays are relatively cheap in comparison to the traditional LCD screens that you can find on for example the HTC's. Here in the Netherlands I found a company that will repair/substitute a Galaxy S screen for 100 euro. (Compared to 250 euro for a HD2 screen) And I didn't search that hard. I bet that there are companies that do it for less.
If other solutions doesn't work for you, google the internet and look what the prices are for a new display in your neighbourhood. Maybe its much cheaper than you thought.
That's beyound any logic.
OLED/AMOLED screens are more expensive than LCD screens, 250$ for the HD2 screen is an overly blown-out price, you can find screens on ebay for less than half that price.
About sandpaper and whatnot- Yeah, high-grit sandpaper is a way to polish out scratches on glass.
I won't ever try it on the SGS, since i don't know where exactly is the digitizer layer.
You won't really need to replace the OLED screen, its the capacitive touch screen layer that needed to be change.
For my omnia i900, I have plenty of scratches on my screen and I replaced the touch layer at one of the local store for less than 40USD.

aren't the touchsensors build in the screen itself? If I remember it well is the biggest advantage of super Amoled that it doesn't have a touch screen layer.

Indeed that is the case. The SAMOLED screens have the touch technology integrated into the screen so you will have to replace the entire screen.
But someone found 100euros for a replacement in Holland... can you post a link to that? Seems like a good backup to me.
If its not insured, then get it insured and claim the repairs of the insurance. Accidental damage should cover it.
outch, didn't know. best keep it scratch-less then.

From eHow:
Use Coca Cola to remove small scratches. Apply a small amount to a soft cloth and rub the scratches. Re-apply until the scratches are gone. The citric acid and carbonation in the soda help clean and remove small scratches in some items.

iSmooth protectors buy 1 set, get 1 set free

I just received my iSmooth protectors today, the packaging is really nice and I love the cloth. I am going to install them in a bit and report back. I noticed in the package a little info card and if you post a review of the protector on Amazon and provide all the proof of review and your Amazon order number they send you another set for free with free shipping. I don't recall anyone mentioning this previously so I thought I would share the information. If you e mail them the Amazon order number, Details of the offer can be found here www.iSmooth.com/freepromo you will receive the same item you purchased or you can choose another similar product in their range. Pretty sweet deal, imo, that's 6 protectors and 2 cloths for just under $11

I think I mentioned it before in another post, they include Thank You card with this info. Indeed a very sweet deal, and they just want your honest opinion/review to receive a second set. But as you know, if you don't like the product you will not request for a second set anyway. Btw, did you receive original screen protectors with green cover film or the new ones with a clear cover film?

There's another thread, a review of the protector and there's pictures. You can see the cut, it's a plainly visual difference in size. Older ones have a green tint on the removable film that you peel off. Newer ones aren't green.

Thanks, I already got a reply from Paul and he's sending out a new set. I love the feel and clarity of the protector, I don't like the cut on this one, too much screen exposed. I finally got the tackiness rubbed off and it feels really nice. I pulled off the jlg protector off my mom's phone, the rainbow was really annoying her. Slapped an iSmooth on it, she's happy now.

You gonna love new version. It's on par with Spigen stuff! The width will be similar to green tint ones, but the cutouts around home button and top of the phone are better. It sticks perfectly, crystal clear, no marks from s-pen, no rainbow effects, and very easy to wipe. Not sure if it was just my sample, I did notice some accumulation of fingerprints, but it's so easy to wipe. No different than Spigen oleophobic. The most important, it feels very smooth, not plasticky at all. This clear version is going to be their new screen protector moving forward in a week or so, as told by Paul.
Any chance u could pn me pauls email I just got the old revision of the screen protectors in the mail and I tried with the ismooth support email but got no response

I just know the guy's name is Paul since he replied back to me. Sorry guys, I probably confused a crap out of everybody with my references to "old" versus "new". I just go by how I understood it originally and what others posted in the forum (I think some of those screen protector posts were removed in favor of a new sticky thread?). Just never mind that whole new vs old stuff. I would say order it, and if everything works great and you are happy - then you are done! They give you lifetime guarantee and you will get 2nd set for free with instructions they provide inside of the shipping package. Also keep in mind, everybody has their own opinion and preference. Some like wet install, others dry. Some want tempered glass, others something else. The tricky part with screen protectors, those are not like cases where its easy to try one versus the other, and then you return whatever you like, or keep a few to change it for different occasions, etc. So, if you find one screen protector you like and happy with it - stop driving yourself crazy (i'm speaking from a personal experience) lol!!! Again, just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt lol!!!

You mean coming off the left side of the phone? In general, not just iSmooth, if glass is not clean and/or oily from fingerprints on one side then it might have issues with sticking. Have you tried another screen protector from the pack and do you see the same problem? Make sure you wipe your screen really good. I actually buy one of those eye glass little spray bottles - its amazing how it cleans the screen and even screen protector (it works on both glass and plastic).
From the picture you posted, it looks like the original cut. Paul mentioned only something like 5% of original screens were affected by an issue of not sticking edge. If you remember, Note 2 has a glass that slopes down toward the Home button. That is where the troublesome edge could happen. If you see the second protector doing the same thing, even after you clean the screen, contract them and ask for a replacement new batch.
.... note to myself: check with iSmooth if they are hiring tech support lol!!!

Yeah mine came with both. I think everyone has them.
Some people removed them, but some people say they help with the strength of the glass.
I took my front one off because it got some marks on it... Seems fine without it.
I say: Leave them on until they get damaged (which seems quite easy)

Afaik the Sony logo is on the preinstalled shatterproof protectors and will disappear when removing the front one.
it seems, not only this protectors increases dust absorption and finger print but also is getting a feel of lost slip on screen when i want to sweep between the pages.i think is better to remove this shields if it is possible and dont injury knocks the screen
my q is why sony should be placed these protectors even with using drugonglass in z?!!!is this can a reason for worse viewing angle on xperia z?!!!

Then you're very lucky as the back of mine looks like a multicolored rainbow of oil slick after a few mins use.
Did you lose the Sony logo off the front? If you didn't you likely just removed the second screen protectors and left the shatter proof factory ones on.
Mines almost unusable now as the fingerprints are worse than any phone I've ever owned.
Viewing angles remain unchanged from removing the protectors, you shouldn't spread false info as there will be a lot of unhappy campers removing their protectors and seeing zero viewing angle difference.
I think you'd better not peel them off. These coverings are designed to prevent broken glass splinters hurting people, and hard and stuck very tight with special method in factory. It won't affect display I suppose, trust Sony. It's part of the device. Moreover, since it scratches easily, add one more film on it...
warranty
not sure if removing sony anti-shatter foils does also remove warranty...as you are given foils also in package, maybe read somewhere on XDA
I do not understand why people remove these...
- When NOT removed and If you drop the phone, it prevents the glass splinters from shattering all over the place.
- When removed Sony can no longer guarantee the phone to be water proof, as stated in another topic.
- When removed the phone attracts more fingerprints.
- When removed you lose the Sony logo on the front.
As far for these scratching a lot, I have not put on any extra screen protector and do not have a single scratch yet.
However I do use a leather case, always do that with all my phones.
Used Xperia Play for 2 years aprox, not a single scratch on the pre installed film.
Kind regards, Stefan.
The dragontrail glass is only for durability purposes! DO NOT remove the shatter proof sheet, it protects the screen from drop shocks so it doesn't get broken! Use the supplied screen protector and you will be fine! Unfortunately here in Greece it ships without screen protectors in the box and damn we got the highest price! (€699)

Matte Screen Protector for ZR

Hi all !
I just bought THIS screen protector and just loving it.
I was worried about the fitting to the screen but the precision laser cut was very accurate, fits exactly to the screen.
I applied it myself for the first time, it is magnetic(does not leave adhesive residue) so you can always remove apply it correctly. The matte finish is just excellent
It is for Indian users but the seller said they import these from abroad so the same brand can be found on international sites too.
I got a clear screen protector and i like it better than matte finish.

Thank you, for your suggestion I got 3 matte and 6 clear screen protectors I will see how it goes and which I like best. Has anyone removed the pre-installed protector from their device. I'm concerned that I'll remove the SONY logo if I get rid of it (I hear that happened on xperia Z units). Is there any danger in removing it and should I remove it at all or just place the new one on top of it?
Place the new one on top. Doesn't dampen sensitivity too much.

matte
At first didn't like my matte screen protector...
Pros
feels nicer!
no filthy finger prints!
minimal light reflections..
if you use dim backlight it really helps..
you can re apply it.
no air bubbles at all!
Cons
unable to use it as a mirror when screen off.
colours and images on the screen are not as sharp,
slight glow on whites.
But now i wouldn't go back!
I'm still waiting for my screen protector and today I noticed a tiny scratch on the screen. It's not that visible but is there a way to fix that. Will the screen protector cover it or I'm stuck with a scratched SONY?

Take a pencil eraser and rub it off..
It should not be the screen itself. Sony is known to apply screen protectors on each phone in-manufacture. It's not visible but if you insist you can remove it. It's even possible that the sony logo is simply printed on it, like the Xperia V.

Yes, there are a lot users talking about it, removing the shatter-proof screen protector voids the warranty because it'll no longer be shatter proof.....stupid isn't it? I already scratched mine before knowing that, now I'm stuck with a scratched screen until my warranty ends and I remove the f****ing thing.

I can't really say I haven't researched this, what I know for sure is that this protector is factory heated onto the screen and it's not supposed to be removed.
Hi,
I'm trying to find a screen protector for a whole display, without any holes in it.. I found this: amazon.de/dp/B00K1JTIMG/ but of course, I'm not sure if it's a picture of a real product or just illustrative picture. can someone confirm / recommend something else?

You are right. The protector is factory-heated onto the screen, remove it and the Sony logo will go off. As for the warranty, there are two paragraphs Sony could use against you if you remove the protector (as stated by the Important information brochure):
Do not paint or attempt to disassemble or modify the product. Only Sony authorized personnel should perform service.

Additionally, "What we will do" section, says:
7. Tampering with any of the seals on the Product will void the warranty.

I know it is not very specific, but hey, that's how lawyers do it.
The only thing I always wonder about, is what kind of glass ZR's screen uses... GorillaGlass? DragonTrail? I found many different sites talking about that, but none of them had conclusive evidence. Sony's official response is ZR uses a "Shatter proof and scratch-resistant glass". No specific brand mentioned .
Anyway, I bought a good protector for 5 bucks. It's a "KLX Anti-explosion Soft TPU 0.2mm Screen Guard Film" and the package includes everything you need to apply it successfully. Also, I saw a 1mm tempered glass protector for 15 bucks, thinking of buying it next time.

saw these guys on facebook (sponsored post) - looks interesting but i cant find any reviews of their products on youtube etc - no influences or anything!

they say its compatible with most cases as long as the lip isnt too high
anyone have any experience with them or any tempered glass they'd recommend (especially one thats compatible with the ringke fusion)
Well, looks promissing!
Looks exactly like this one.

I'm convinced there is only 2 or 3 manufacturers and they just put the glass in different packaging.

I don't think we'll ever seen one for the Note 8.

Zaggs tempered glass revision 2 has been on the money. I've placed this thing on twice. Once when I got it and, the second time, I removed it from my old unit after a screen burn-in replacement, and place it onto my new unit. No air bubbles and the glass feels high quality, comparable to Whitestone sans the complex installation. It sits on the screen only slightly curving to the edge, and it does sit flush without interfering with the edge tab if I choose to use it. It is quite expensive ($50) but imho, it's quite worth it after successful installation. Highly recommend it!

While I agree with you that it goes on nicely you didn't mention that since it doesn't cover as much screen as other protectors and also has black side bars you get a weird effect where there's screen, black bar, rest of the screen which is quite annoying.

yes there are black borders around SP which the top and bottom part aligns with the phone borders, so no issues there. Depending on an individual's taste, the side borders may be of concern. However, I made no mention of any weird effects as a result from the blk borders and / or the edges not being fully covered because I haven't experienced any negative effects thru general use of the phone. I must also mention, that in some apps, i.e. flipboard the first letters of words that display close to the edge of the screen may be partially blocked by the SP borders. But for me that's not a problem, as i don't experience this issue with most of the apps I use on a daily basis.

No I agree with you, I just thought people should know in case they're looking to purchase it. Like you said, 50 dollars is a lot for a SP especially if you didn't know the bars did that and it bothered you. I'll be keeping mine on until something better comes along, if ever.

Agreed!
They at least have an all clear one here with no black bars if you go to the select page, still doesn't look like it goes all the way to the sides https://m.aliexpress.com/item/32852...00_0109&spm=a2g0n.search-amp.list.32852741886

i have tried these, good product in terms of clarity and touch sensitivity. the issue i had was that the vertical edges would easily crack with a bit of pressure as they dont seat on the screen as well as they should.
my current solution for using these is to remove the adhesive backing and reapply with loca adhesiveand cure with uv light.

Tested these a month ago. Cracked two working out bubbles. Glass quality is very bad. One cracked on the right side. The other on the bottom using a fingernail to work out a bubble. No chance that this is good 9h tempered glass. Opened a dispute and got both refunded. My opinion, not recommended.
Not recommended too, to narrow, covering edges with black bars completely.

Not recommended too, same bad glass like the one posted and cutting display on the bottom

ok so i purchased one and it arrived yesterday
while applying it i got some dust stuck under the protector, tried to take it out but it wouldnt move
applied it anyway and its pretty good except for the air bubbles near the curved sides of the screen (and the dust particles)
the protector is really fragile too, it chipped and cracked a corner while working out the bubbles - others have complained that theirs cracked for no reason
other than that it actually feels amazing and is compatible with the ringke fusion
ive contacted support, hopefully theyll send me out a new one
I wonder why they disabled comments in their video?
What's the best between this one and Dome Glas ?
I don't like the cut around speaker - face camera ...
A real full cover for front face is the most beautiful but may be not very good for quality of face camera ???
