[Q] Is this thing waterproof or resistant? - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone know if this thing is waterproof/water resistant... I was shocked to find out that the 2013 Moto X was water resistant to some degree, and can stay fully submerged for quite some time, yet there was no mention of this by Motorola. Why would they hide that fact, other than to avoid liability?

Both Moto X have some water resistant coating and can tolerate bit of water but not fully water proof like what Motorola Defy used to be.

I love Motorola for the fact that they have always tried to give more than what they promise

Can't wait till a brave soul tries this out and puts out a video. Wish it was more known so some actual rigorous testing could be done.
Thanks for letting me know, and yea it is pretty cool that they did that and kept it hush.

on the Motorola specs page, they don't keep it hush anymore lol. they claim it is water resistant, but it isn't IP certified

Hi, I see on several websites that the Moto X 2014 is IP68, and indeed the Moto X 2013 had a water coating. But however I don't see any motorola official informations about that and it is important for me to know if I really can use it under water or if it is just a protection against life's accidents, it can also change my order of a wood to a composite version... Anyone who know if the water enter in the phone or not ?

Water can absolutely enter the phone. It is not waterproof. It is somewhat resistant to splashing and that's about it.

The only person who will likely do it is Erica Griffin since she did it in the past.
It has to do with luck, per device, what type of water you put it in, and how long it stayed there. Fresh water you may have some luck, but less likely with salt water.

Can someone pls answer me.. while talking to a persona last night sitting adjacent to me, 2 tiny pint's of his saliva spit falls on my L90's display(while no screen protector wass over it),then is my phone's display LCD/logic board susceptible to liquid damage as much as it being damaged by water itself, since saliva too is a liquid with pH 7. I did wipe it off with a soft dry cloth immediately but I am afraid & have these crazy thoughts lingering in my mind for quite sometime now. so can please somebody answer me & clear my doubts

Yeah. none of my gorilla glass phone really cracked or got water. Just dont pressure the screen too much or you will get an inner LCD crack, drops of water should not cause that much of a obvius damage to display

@shinobisoft Yes..I know I surely am being paranoid ! This paranoia got induced in me ever since I faced a lot many pre-hardware defect-prone MOTO G (never misused), I have become extremely sensitive to even minute issue's & try to evaluate it's potential negative consequences. I just wanted to ensure that no issues surface on my L90 this time

@wojtek267 Thank You to have conveyed the message though, in an indirect way of course. Appreciate your sense of humor ! But I have to tell you this is only a part of my effort to calm my restless mind. No matter what my perception & knowledge is, it's people's POV that matters to me.
******CORRECTION*******
I seem to have used the wrong word "pint" in my OP here. what I wanted that to mean for the size was, two extremely tiny droplets of water (one near the bottom center & one near the left edge) similar to the size of a tiny mole on our body. Apologies for any likely inconvenience/ difficulty in understanding.

[Q] Water Resistance?

Does anyone know if the Nexus 6 has an IP rating like the Sony Z3?
On the promo video they show it in a tank, Motorola's site shows water resistance as well. I would assume that if it can be dropped in a tank, the water resistance is at least on par with the Sony Z2?

Its supposedly the same as the Moto X. Water resistance through a nano coating. Not meant to be submerged, but can survive the occasional puddle/toilet plunge...

That's what I assumed as well, but did you happen to see the image on the link I provided? They show it in a tank and also show someone swimming with it.
It's the same water resistant coating found on the current Moto X. It'll protect the phone from splashes, and perhaps a quick accidental dip into the tub, but don't expect to swim with it like a Z2 or Z3.

I saw it. Not saying it wouldn't survive that. But I'm sure they'll have a more detailed explanation as to how long it can

If you look at their graphic of the phone in the fishtank, at the top of the "forehead" of the phone, it says SAMSUNG.
What forum am I in again?
Do you guys think it will do fine in rain?
As someone who happens to play Ingress, I prefer not having to sandwich-bag my phone every time there is a drizzle.

Yes rain s/b fine, there are You Tubes somewhere that show a guy dunking his Moto X in a glass and it survives.
The Nexus 6, like previous Motorola phones, will be water resistant. This means that it can survive (small) spills and it will probably be safe to use out in (light) rain. I wouldn't try submerging this phone or using it in the shower though. Lol

don't think so !
Just as an update, the other night i tried the customer service chat with Motorola to see if they could elaborate on the "Water Resistant - Yes" spec.... if they had an idea what the resistance rating was. Was told that at this time, they have no information as to what the resistance rating is, and to check the site periodically for any updates. Doesn't really help much... but figured i'd mention it.

Waterproof case for the N6?

Anyone know of a waterproof case for the N6? Something similar to a lifeproof case, perhaps? I know its water resistant, but looking for waterproof.
I believe the Nexus 6 is IP67 rated - 1 meter submersion in water for 30 minutes with no damaging ingress of water.

It's not it's only splash resistant like the moto x due to the nano coating
So this isn't scientific or from the manufacturer, but some guys did an IP67 test and the Moto X passed. The moto website only says "water resistant" which is horribly ambiguous. The Nexus 6 has the same water resistant tech.
[can't post link]
I'm an electronics engineer, and a few of our products are "IP67" rated. A lot of times the manufacturer will not state or guarantee the IP67 rating because some devices will inevitably get water damage and then customers get pissed because they think waterproof means water invincible.
I would bet the Nexus 6 will pass the IP67 test every time - provided the device is new and the seals aren't damaged and you haven't dropped it too much.

Interesting. I watched a Motox review that showed the opposite--phone stopped working after a couple minutes in a kitchen sink.
My theory could very well be wrong. Search "submersion test" at androidpit.com.
Everyone should tweet lifeproof to let them know there is a demand. The nuud would be awesome for this device.
One of the YouTube videos I watched on the nexus 6 had it submerged in a bath tub and it worked fine.

nexus 6 lifeproof case
What about sending an email to lifeproof for a nexus 6 case from the nüüd series? Would that help?
The nexus is not nearly popular enough for lifeproof to make a case. They only do iphones, galaxy s series, and the droid turbo. They only did the turbo as part of a deal with Verizon because Verizon is most likely their largest customer.
What are you planning?
Looks good enough for me.

I use my phone in the rain snow and water fell on it here and there no issues. What are you gonna go take photos of Atlantis? Lol
I'm looking for a case myself. This spring I will be riding ATV's in the dirt/mud/water etc, and want to fully protect my phone. Sure, I could drop a sim in my S4 and grab a lifeproof for that but would prefer to bring my normal phone with me.
My ultimate goal is to handle-bar mount it, paired with a go-pro.

Even IP67 certified stuff could get water damage if you accidentally put the device right in the stream of water

Don't do this. The heated water/steam will damage it without a good case designed for water proof.

waterproof or not?

well, at least you dont have to worry about dropping it in a puddle, or the toilet, or the sink!
Unexpected surprise...

Once the phone is jostled, the internal air pressure is messed with, and water actually first enters the device. You can tell as the headphone jack finally has air bubbles coming from it. This is true with any phone with a decent seal on it. Its not water proof or resistant by ANY means. As soon as liquid gets in, the phone starts to die. Because it's not water resistant. Go figure.
And then to top it all off, that ****tard plugs the USB into a wet charging port and wonder why it shorts and burns. Christ...
So yeah, in summary: This has been posted a bunch of times already, and it's a total load of horse****. The phone isn't water resistant at all.

Don't fall for the hype!
A device "protected" by this quackery will still succumb to water intrusion damage.
The demos are using de-ionized water.
Real life liquids are full of ions.
Bad things will happen.
The only way to waterproof a device is to keep water on the outside, period!
i do not really think this phone is water proof

The phone isn't waterproof AT ALL it's simply sealed well. Same crap when the M8 first came out.

I like to think i have a reasonable approach to any manufacture's claims; either
1) Test it if they claim "proof" (i do this with every IPX8 flashlight i buy)
2) Or, if i am at all dubious about the claim, assume it is at least one to two levels below the claim, and treat it as such.
If they are honest and say that its not proof, i am really going to believe them, and act accordingly.

Z Fold2 water & ice test

Some food stuff right here. Amazed at both videos...
Pretty unexpected to me
Galaxy Z Fold2 | 2 Days AFTER the Water Test & Water Freeze Test
Sam is a BEAST
Not a bright idea at all. Freezing water can easily fracture granite and has been used like this for quarrying. The amount of pressure freezing water* can exert is enormous. What could go wrong?
"Something Samsung didn't mention about Fold2: it had an anti erosion waterproof coating on the main internal components. Doesn't make it waterproof, but should help it survive a dunk."
In other words all it has for "waterproofing" is a conformal coating on the PCBs. The ribbon connectors are not waterproof... all those contact surfaces. Let's see if it fails in the next month or year... or today.
A sick joke of a vid... don't try this at home kiddies
*water expanse approximately 9% as it freezes. Anything in it's way... moves. Ice is not compressible no more than water and the laws of hydraulics come into play.

I think you missed the whole point of the videos. Dude, you're just becoming a troll now. I really don't get it.
You've made it clear you hate the Z Fold 2. You don't have anything nice to say about Samsung. Honest question, why do you spend so much time in the Z Fold forums? Why do you spend ANY time in the Z Fold forums? There's plenty of phones I don't like for one reason or another, but other people do like them. That's why they have their own forums. God bless you Mr. O... I think that's how y'all say what I'm really thinking about you.
Here's some more info about the sealing technology or lack of on the Z. Wonder if that fiber seal holds water? They would pack the drill holes with sawdust, add water then allow it to freeze when quarrying granite over a century ago.
Saw dust, fiber seal... perfect and Freeze!
Redirecting
A fiber seal doesn't seem so clever as it only seals out some of the dust but not water.
Maybe on the next Fold generation Samsung will get it right.
