[Q] Removed persistent google search bar - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All,
Gladly recieved my Z3 compact yesterday. Playing around with it I've removed the google search bar from the very top of the home screen. At the time, there was a message telling me how to get it back. I didn't read it! Now there is an empty, unusable space where it once was.
How to get it back? Could someone with a Z3 compact attempt to delete the search bar and read the message which tells you how to get it back?
Please note, adding it back as a widget WILL NOT work, as the space at the top now seems to be reserved.
I don't want to change launcher; I figure - if the space can't be used for anything else, or any other widgets, I may as well have the search bar there.
Thanks

Goto Settings -> Apps -> All -> Find in the list "Xperia Home" -> Tap on it -> Select "Delete Data".
Mind you, this will not only bring the Search bar back but will restore the Home Screen to its original settings completely. Means, the Home Screen will again look as if you just unpacked the phone.

wow - spent the last 24 hours setting up my icons! is there no other way?

Yes, just bring the Search Bar widget on.

I wonder why the Google search bar widget is fixed onto the home screen like that? It seems obtrusive and unnecessery to me. :-/

No. As I said in my original post, the space created when I deleted the search bar cannot be simply replaced by another widget search bar, or any other widget for that matter.
If it was as simple as long pressing in the space, and adding back the search bar widget I wouldn't be on here!
Can anyone guide me? Is there a way of replacing the built-in google search bar without loosing all my home screen customisation?

Your best bet is to make a screenshot of every home screen page, so it will at least be easier to redo your home screen customization. If the space of the google bar is unusable, then there is probably no other way than to delete the data for Xperia Home and redo everything.

Oh an idea just came up: you know how you're able to delete and add home screen pages, right? Are you able to delete the page that has the reserved space? See if the space will be usable if you re-add the home screen page after deleting it. You might just be able to delete the page with the reserved space, add a new page and shift your icons and widgets one page to the left/right to restore your original page setup.

Well I did it. I think the only way was to delete all data and start from scratch. Thanks for the help everyone.

Though is it possible to delete the home screen page with the permanent google search bar?

See if you can just delete the home screen page that has the reserved space? When you long touch an empty area on the home screen, every page should have a little cross in the corner, does it work for the page that had the google bar?

That's outrageous! So every page also has a permanent google search bar?
Anyway, I found this: http://www.engadget.com/2014/09/26/google-app-requirements-android/
It's probably related to this news. I think the "powered by android" branding at boot-up is related to this news as well.
The part where it says that Google wants to be represented prominently on the home screen. If Google keeps up that attitude its ego is going to burst, lol.

Same problem here ...
Hi, apart from Google's politics and its ego, here I'm having the very same problem: cannot figure out how to put the search bar back
[My actual problem is: this bran new phone is a gift I've done to my wife, so this is going to be unpleasant ].
Anyone an idea (a precise idea)? Please... Thanks!

I did, and it says:
Delete Xperia Home data in Settings -> Apps to get back the Search Bar.
So it's basically what sxtester said haha.

Seeing that you are from Spain, your phone might be in Spanish (just as mine).
In our case, the process is:
Ajustes-> Aplicaciones -> Todas-> Find in the list "Inicio de Xperia" -> Tap on it -> Select "Borrar Datos".
Hope it helps! And sorry for the language mix, but as the thread is in English, I think is appropiate to keep it that way

I'm afraid Android is slowly trying to become more locked down like iOS. I mean, they tried it with Android Silver but luckily OEMs weren't interested in a locked down version of Android. But now Google is still doing unacceptable things such as forcing OEMs to place a permanent Google search bar on top of every home screen page. It's also happened to me twice that a bunch of Google apps such as Hangout, Pictures, Google+ re-enabled themselves x days after disabling them.

I checked the message

I reset the home screen data, them i attempted to delete the google bar again in order to see the message. It is as follow: "Clear Xperia home data in settings > Apps to bring back the search bar"
This bar is fixed in all home pages in Z3. So you cant retreive it by deleting a single home page as someone suggested in this thread.
Z3 is powered by Google so I guess this is why they fixed this bar in all home screen pages. Just guessing.

This worked great and found an easy way to get icons back...

This worked perfectly to restore the google tool bar on each screen (without taking up icon space) and as I was warned, returned all screens to their original state, but instead of using the old method of going to all apps, holding down the app you want, and dragging to the correct screen (very time consuming). I wrote down what apps go on what screen and where, then by holding down in an empty space on any home screen, you get a toolbar that includes "Apps." Hit Apps, this method is so much faster (you can easily pick apps, then the screen you want it on, and location, and easily move on to the next icon to place)! This entire process took less than 5 minutes.

[Q] My home screen changed HELP

So my home screen changed what can I do to fix it? when I tap home it goes to a different screen than it use to. I went into edit and tried to move them around to get the screen I had back to home but did not work. I have a icon on the bottom of one of the screens while in edit that looks like the home button and it stays on that screen no matter what I do. I moved that screen everywhere to far left to far right but it still stays as my home screen. I want my old home screen back Help me please.
I hope I have explained this correctly.....
What launcher are to using?
I am using what ever came on the phone I have not added a launcher
I do not use touch wiz. That is stock. I use launcher pro. Read this, maybe it will shed light
http://androidforums.com/captivate-...64-how-do-you-change-default-home-screen.html
I found that and read it while searching google for help but it did not help me I really did not want to add another launcher to the phone if I don't have to. And I tried all those things.
Thanks
From home, menu -> settings -> applications -> manage applications
Now you may need to hit menu -> filter and select All if you are using the stock launcher TwLauncher.
Find the current launcher select "Clear defaults". The next time you hit home it will prompt you to select a default again.
Thanks this is what I was looking for are to a tech person for this phone or what? I have search everywhere for an answer and have found nothing that is correct. I need your contact info in case I have other question or problems about the phone.
Thanks Again!
No just got my captivate in december. Have a tech background actually with blackberry. If you get stuck again just post here again, there are many helpful forum users.

[Q] Need help from true Android expert !!

Hi,
I have a really strange problem. Yesterday I was playing with a game on my Galaxy S.
Suddenly the game started to lag and refuse input. The home key and the power button did not work.
So I took out the battery and restarted. I've done this before many times without problems.
But this time, after the reboot, I am missing 3 icons of the GUI: Phone, Contacts and Message.
I have only "Application" left, in the lower part of the screen.
I do not want to do an hard reset right now, I'm in vacation, I have many useful apps and don't
want to lose them right now.
I wish to kindly ask if some expert can tell me how to get my icons back !
Thank you !
Sergio
PS: my rom is a stock Samsung 2.3.4 and I have root access.
EDIT 1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've found this advice:
From the home screen, press Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > All
Search for TwLauncher and clear the data stored in there.
but.... I cannot find TWlauncher in my Applications. Even changing language from Italian to english. Maybe it was on Froyo, and now on Gingerbread it has another name ??
EDIT 2 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
After changing language, the name of some system application also change. But this seems a slow process. After 5 minutes from language change, I have finally found TWlauncher in my application list and following the advice i got my icons back.

When you open your Apps Drawer, are the Phone, Contacts and Messaging Apps still there?
If so, just press and hold the icon, then drop them back on your homescreen.

If you mean the quick launch bar at the bottom of the homescreen, do this:
Application -> *left menu button* -> edit -> drag&drop the apps you'd link to have there -> done!
Funny, I Was quite sure that the 3 icons were both in quick launch bar AND app drawer. So when I've found that solution I've seen that putting icons in quick launch removes them from app drawer. So I've tried the other solution but I found the same result.
Can you confirm that this icons normally stay in quick launch OR app drawer, and not in both ?
Thanks
Yep. When you drag an App to the quick launch bar, it isn't shown in app drawer anymore.

ADWLauncher EX Duplicate Menu Button!!

I recently installed ADWLauncher EX 1.3.3.56 and it was working fine and then suddenly a duplicate menu button is showing in the buttom bar. I tried reinstalling and chaning the General Behaviour > System Preferences > Customize menu but the freaking thing just wont go away!
I tried searching everywhere for a solution but it seems I am the only one facing it.
Screenshot attached
Mine has always had this button. But I find ADW is not quite compatible with the 7.7, especially in landscape mode.
Same here but it was always there. It doesn't really matter to me. Works much smoother than TW. Although it is correct that it's a bit off when it comes to landscape mode.
Sorry about that, i guess i did not notice it before
We will just need to wait for an update then...
Yeah I just noticed this too. Didn't used to be there. Not sure what happened!
Guys, just remove top bar, give more space for homescreens http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21833740&postcount=22

I understood everything very clear. There's no way to remove bottom menu button since ADW designed to work on 2.x androids, but you can remove TOP bar with "duplicate" menu button so you'll have only one then and also additional screen space which will be freed by topbar.

Yes, of course you can! You are allowed upto 7 homscreens in the default Touchwiz UI. All you have to do is select one which has no widgets or shortcuts and have it as your default screen. You can also manually delete widgets and shortcuts by holding the widget and dragging it to the bottom of the screen (dustbin icon).

To preview all your homescreens pinch inwards (similar to pinch to zoom out)..

If you want a completely clean screen, you may have to use another launcher. I use ssLauncher, and it can do that. Others can too, I am sure.
Actually, you can get rid of them. Just tap on applications button from home screen (bottom right button) > menu button > edit > slide bottom buttons away and voila
If you do this, make sure at least the applications button is somewhere on another home screen.
Don't think it's very practical, though.

At this point I have 2 homescreens left. One with the application button at the bottom and the widgets and shortcuts I use most and one with only my wallpaper but still the application button visible at the bottom. As you can understand I want to get rid of the application bottom at the last mentioned homescreen, but that doesn't seem to work. Tapping on the application button the application menu opens, but the application button then is no longer visible and it is changed in the homepage-button.
you might want to look into the app called SwipePad
its awesome for minimalistic homescreen with LOTS of options for quick app access

Thanks for the tip....but I'd prefer to accomplish this without installing an app that changes my lay-out and graphics and also changes it to English. I don't have problems with this language, but I'm Dutch, so I want my phone keep it that way.
