Photos, Music, Videos on SDcard by default? - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I haven't had a phone with an SDcard for quite awhile now and on my wife's old Razr i there was no way to get pictures/music/videos to be saved on the SDcard by default, moving them for storage space became a hassle. Does the Z3c have a way to set Pictures/Music/Videos to be saved onto the SDcard by default?

I believe most camera apps have the option now to store the files on an external card. I guess that would go for pictures and videos.
I'm not sure what you mean by music.
There is no default music on the phone, so anything you put on the phone will probably come from yourself (And you can choose where to store it soooo )

Do you have a Z3c to check the camera has a setting to store to the SDcard? As far as music I'm referring to things like Play Music, Slacker/Beats/Spotify/etc music subscriptions that allow you to cache songs to storage for offline playback when you have a subscription.

Thanks appreciate it, I know it's painfully slow to transfer large amounts of pictures/music files from internal to SDcard so hoping you get to choose the location first.
Can you please check the camera settings also.

Both play music and the camera app have options to set the default location as the SD card.

Give Spotify a chance all the music you want for sonly some bucks a month and you can even download it to your computer/tablet/mobile so you can listen to it even when you are offline (all with one account).. so good.

So what's the difference between downloading my music and using something like Spotify?
I just love having my 60+gb music with me at all time. Especially when being out of the country, not having to rely on an internet connection (Talking about the streaming part only ofc)

I like it because of the playlists and that I have the same songs on all my devices without having to sync them - that's all
Also, the music is (kinda) already there, you don't have to download it

Yeah if you have multiple devices then I can understand it.
I only have my phone as a portable device.
I've got all of my songs on my phone and pc, so that if one fails I still have a back up.

Thanks for confirming that.

Can Apps be installed in the SD card? Seems Sony only has this feature for lower end phones. I have not seen evidence the Z3c allows to move apps to the SD. I am guessing that will be under Settings-->Apps-->(select an app?)
Thanks
***Update***
So it seems the answer is NO.

I read yesterday that Google is bringing back more "open" access to the SD card again via Lollipop. Finally!

not sure if this was resolved, but you can transfer all photos, video s and music to the SD card via Settings > Storage > Transfer Data to SD card.
Not sure if this means all future music will automatically go there. Can anyone confirm?

There is a periodic check to see if your internal memory is over 75% full. When it is, you get prompted to use this Sony Utility. Unfortunately for me my picture transfer fails (even though I have my camera app set to save it to SD Card). Which is how I ended up in this thread.
I'm living with this only because i know it will change once we get Lollipop.

Photos on the SD card
The problem I'm having is I accidently clicked my SD card for my photo storage and then I realized what happened and changed it back to internal memory storage but now all the photos I took while it was set to the SD option I can't find them now. I'm fairly certain I checked all the folders and the 10 or so photos I took are nowhere to be found.

Media Scanning
Hey there,
Did you ever get this sorted out? Looks like you may have. If I may ask, how long was it taking you to sync? So far, the one thing that could be a deal-breaker for this phone is the fact that Media Scanning is taking FOREVER. So far, I think it's been going for at least 45 minutes. Granted, this is a SanDisk 32GB, which is only a class 2, but primarily what I have on there is photos and music, with just a few video clips. The Droid X which I'm also trying takes a fraction of the time (perhaps several minutes but only does once). Is there a way out of the freeze or delay? Not sure it's ever going to finish and don't really wanna start over from scratch again!
Any help is appreciated!!
Thanks,
K-
Even without any external SD card, mine is taking time to do media scan. Yes, the wait is annoying, but only when I soft reboot. Not a big deal for me. I suspect that's the way Android works. In winmo and iPhone, there is no such wait. May be you guys with experience on other android phones could confirm that this happens to all android phones?
Shirley if it could be disabled you could push manual scan after putting files on
Read an interesting blog a while back. Never tried it my self since I don't have that much media on my card.
Some thing about putting .nomedia file in your directory and putting a dot (.) infront of your directory name.

Get a startupmanager (is in the market) and disable the mediastorage under the system tab. startupmanager is a trial, but after you applied the setting you can uninstall the app and setting remain there. Then if you want to manually scan get the scanmedia app (also in market).

yes it will work.. but better to use nomedia with the huge directory that is causing the hangup or get a faster card.. reason.. if you have any music you want to play or mp3 ringtones.. they will not work if you disable scan. ie you will not have your ringtones.. but stock sounds such as beeping when a call comes in.

just use ScanMedia app , it will do the scan for you in almost no time it's one one click app
Using a rooted but otherwise stock ROM I removed the "Media Storage" component entirely via Root Uninstall. Now the phone actually takes slightly longer to locate my apps and widgets on boot, however it no longer has to rescan every time I put it in USB Mass Storage mode and/or disconnect it. i use the phone as a flash drive for my job extensively (that and ConnectBot FTW!) so this was a major issue for me.
I suppose disabling the media scanner would be a safer approach, but if anyone is wondering, you CAN safely remove this entirely if you have a rooted phone. In my case, I'm using WinAMP as my music player, so don't need it for that. Gallery still works flawlessly so this service isn't used by Gallery I think.
I have noticed one single side effect of this though. Apparently Google+ installed to my SD card by default, which disabled the Google+ widget entirely (removed it and couldn't re-add it). Simply moving the app to internal storage solved this.

[Q] Doubletwist and removable SD

Is there any way to get Doubletwist to recognize and store my files on the removable SD instead of the phone's internal "media area"? I'm filling up the latter quite fast, while the external card is nearly empty. I can't find any setting in DT that lets you choose where to store music on the device.
I know that Doubletwist's publisher has been promising a "fix" for about five months now, but I figured someone here might have come up with something on their own.
Any help appreciated. TIA
Alternatively, any recommendations on a player with desktop iTunes sync functionality and flexibility in storage locations on the Bionic?
This is a known issue with the Bionic and DoubleTwist. I submitted a ticket with Doubletwist support, and they confirm that the software is not working properly with ExternalSD on the Bionic.
I uploaded my DeviceID information for them, and the support agent promised that it would be fixed in the next release. They offered no workaround. Sorry
I've been using Songbird with MediaSync to get around the issue, but it does no transcoding, which is less-than-ideal.
It's because Moto made /sdcard the internal memory and /sdcard-ext the external as opposed to the normal /emmc and /sdcard for internal and external respectively.
This problem is shared with the x2 and d3 and there is a fix, I"m just not sure if it was adapted to the Bionic yet.

I use Easy Phone Tunes Plus on my Bionic and it works fine for me. Easy Phone Tune has a free version that you can try to see if you like it. It's also available for PC or Mac.
Thanks for the info!
@kraamerica, does Easy Phone Tunes Plus store files on sd-ext? That's my bigger issue, really: Even with syncing only a portion of my music, I run out of space quickly. Kind of a bite to have the SD card there and not be able to use it.

I will look this afternoon when I get back to my PC. That's where you control the syncing and it's pretty good and letting you choose what you want to sync (including podcasts) I just can't remember if there is a "where".
When you 1st establish a connection through the setting's of the Easy Phone Application, it will show your "2" phones (one is your internal, the other external). You would chose the 2nd "phone" unless you have the SD card swap in place.
Then you go through the rest of what you what synced in the next section of the setup and you are good to go. Or so I would hope.

Double image & cant play music

I have searched the threads multiple times and always got only temporary answers.
I have had ppl tell me to CLEAR DATA under the apps --> Media storage.
It looks good after immediate bootup, but after 1 hr everything is now double or even triple.
Also the music files play only within a 30 minute timeframe, after that it only says "Can't play the track you requested"
Can anyone give me a permanent solution to this problem??
I am presently using ICS Stunner 1.4.26.1
Are you using the stock player? I've had this problem myself and i noticed that some temporary files were saved on my internal storage (with the music on my external). After i set my music folder as the default music folder it stopped duplicating everything. I haven't bothered to look for the duplicates, so i'm not sure where they're hiding at.
Using PlayerPro.

external SD

I've recently picked up the xperia z and a 64gb mem card. I'm trying to load my music on my external SD but everytime I do it by album it only copies a small amount of data and makes the music unplayable due to the fact it'll play the first 2 seconds then skip... Any way around this?
Also is it possible to copy the data from games (Nova 3, GTA 3 etc to my external as I wanna keep the internal for apps only?
EDIT: Btw if it matters I'm on .423
Thanks!

No u cannot move apps-data to external (cause android 4.x.x not support app to sd-card)
about ur problem with music u can do this for troubleshooting;
test another sd-card
force stop app (from setting > apps > all)
clear cache
clear data
Format Sd-card (i recommend to do it with unix like ubuntu) (what is ur sd-card?)
:good:
Don't use album to transfer music. Go to settings...Xperia....USB connection mode.... Change it from MTP (media transfer protocol) to MSC (mass storage card). Accept all disclaimers that internal memory cannot be connected and so on. Connect to PC using USB cable. Open ext storage card in My Computer (in case auto open doesn't occur) and transfer any amount of music/video to card by copy/paste or drag & drop. Transfer speeds are faster in this mode, than in MTP...
Dead Cookies leave mo trails...
Or fastest method:
- pull out memory card, put it in card reader and Copy/Paste data from PC

the game app will search for its data and if u move them to external it won't find them and try to download again and all ur personal data in the game will lose

apps disappear

Ok here is a weird issue, R1 prime varient, rooted, bootloader unlocked, Ads gone and OTA disabled, 64GB sd card as adoptable storage, anyhow everytime i reboot the device the following apps just disappear and I have to reinstall from play store, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint also MX Player. It could be a corrupt SD card. Try copying something from your PC to the SD card. Reboot the phone and see if the files are still there.
Once I moved those 4 apps back to internal they survived several reboots. I'll keep an eye on other apps. But my guess is those apps just don't like being installed to SD
For some reason whenever I put the Spotify app on my SD card it causes the cache to be wiped. I could understand this happening when I first place the app on the SD card, but it seems like every time the app is closed in memory id have to log back into spotify and "re-download" my songs. It doesnt happen on the main storage so im guessing its a problem with the phones firmware.

I'm guessing the apps just don't handle adoptable storage, some apps refuse to install to SD for that reason, but if SD card is formatted for adoptable and you migrate and set SD as default, the apps install to SD. So my guess is not all apps are hip to marshmallows implementation of SD as internal. Either way it's frustrating, lol

Spotify isn't storing music as cache. It stores it as data but when the cache is wiped you have to re-sign into Spotify. The song would download fairly quick after I would sign in and download my playlists. Something is clearing the cache for Spotify while it's on the SD card. (btw the SD is mounted to run as "internal storage".) While spotify is located on the actual internal storage it works just fine. I don't know if it's an issue with the stock rom or spotify.

It shouldn't be storing your credentials in cache either! Any long term stored information should be in data. Cache is only for temporary storage that it's safe to wipe in between running instances of the app. Things like temporary download files, etc.

Just cleared the cache. It doesn't seem to store login credentials as cache so it's definitely something to do with spotify. I don't want to put spotify on my SD card and potentially have to re download all my songs. Either way it's only a minor annoyance. I'll try to mount the SD not as internal storage and see if that works.

It doesn't happen to other apps on my SD card so yeah it's really strange. So maybe spotify is broken. Although I am on the beta app of spotify so that may be the cause
Well it's been over two weeks those four apps have survived this long, and I have had no issues with any other apps I have installed. So I am going with my original theory, those apps just plain don't like being installed to SD, even if it's formatted as adoptable storage.
