To flash the system.img you will need mfastboot found here. https://mega.co.nz/#!4wAkGJxJ!x5O6w-3KzoS4Xedo_gCALNXt5swNEevmENvv4iHBGS4
You will need to split up the system.img to use.. this is for advanced users only..

thanks brotha

Just realized that I had Better Battery Stats installed as a system app when I did the system img. I'm uploading a new one now

system.img link is back up

You should put this in the android development section

no worries. i always do my own pull of the system.img right after root. recovery.img is something i never pull since that's usually one of the first things readily available in sections due to it's small size and the necessity for having custom recoveries to flash user made zips (and needing to go back for OTAs).

Did you try to use mfastboot or fastboot? On the og moto x you have to use mfastboot to flash the system.

error: cannot load 'system.img'
I don't believe I'm doing anything wrong, but can someone please clarify?

Did you mfastboot? Must not fastboot for system only.

I did download the mfastboot and extracted it to my C drive. I tried throwing the system.img into that folder and flashing. Is that what you mean? If not could you please elaborate?

Aha. I see. mfastboot breaks it up into manageable chunks. When I flashed it the first time I was impatient as it didn't give my any output for a bit. Apologies. Thanks so much!

Thanks so much for posting this! In what order do we flash these. Is there anyone's favorite tutorial out there to help?? Thanks

It's doesn't matter which order you flash them in. There are plenty of tutorials on how to flash fastboot images, just do a Google search.

Please clarify my doubts...
My build number is same KXE21.187-42, but system version is "21.21.42.........en.EU retin". I did root this and it is working great, installed custom recovery and also xposed framework...
Now if I want stock recovery can I uninstall the Xposed and flash the stock recovery that has been provided here (and of course take an OTA)? Does that depends on build number alone, or something to do with system version also...?
Kindly enlighten me, there may be many posts regarding this issue, but I'm confused and need a confirmation...

Still no OTA but you want KitKat AND keep your data?

Hello friends!
I want to share some information for the beginners here:
While there is the Nexus 4 factory image for KitKat available, there still are non known OTA urls.
But you can flash KitKat anyway AND keep your data (as long as you have an unlocked bootloader):
1. Download the factory image from here:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images?hl=de#occamkrt16o
2. extract ALL the files contained into the same directory where your fastboot.exe is saved, for unpacking I recommend using 7zip
3. boot your phone into bootloader
4. type in the following commands:
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-mako-makoz20i.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash radio radio-mako-m9615a-cefwmazm-2.0.1700.84.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot format cache
fastboot reboot
You're done, KitKat on your Nexus 4, your apps and data still available!
Note: Your phone has to be full stock!!!!
UPDATE:
I'm really sorry for the mistakes I made in this thread.
I corrected them all by now, I think.
To make it more easy for you: You can rename the radio and the bootloader files let's say to radio.img and bootloader.img. Then use the fastboot commands with these new names. So you're a bit more safe not to make spelling errors.
Once again: I am sorry and I hope nobody got stuck due to my mistakes!!!
Some errors here.

If you're making a guide, make sure you give people the correct commands (the numbers of the bootloader and radio are wrong). Not to mention there already is a guide where flashing the update without losing data is explained.

I thought it was excellent! Anyone who knows what they are doing in the Command Prompt/Terminal understands that they can hit the Tab key to auto-complete the filename. Its up to them to make sure they are accessing their correct folder/file name, not yours!

In my opinion 7Zip looks slightly better and it doesn't spam you with that your trial is over every time you open it.
what to do with a custom rom?
I have PA on my N4 and was wondering what to do to get KitKat? is the procedure similar or different?
Thanks a lot!

7zip is far more friendly towards archives other than rar and zip formats. it's also the only archive app I've found that will allow you to open a flashable zip or apk and replace files inside (like an icon's image file, for example) without having to actually decompile/recompile either the zip or apk (assuming you don't change too much with either file-type)

whether it's a custom or stock rom does not matter. the procedure will be the same either way
Upgrading 4.2>4.3>4.4 was always a piece of cake with Wug toolkit and never had to reinstall any application.
Keeping my settings and applications was important for me.

the method you refer to will still install the userdata.img file, which will wipe your rom's userdata, as well as anything on your storage partition. The method mentioned in this thread's OP omits the userdata.img file and relies on the user manually wiping the rom data in n custom recovery, therefore wiping only rom data while leaving the storage partition untouched.
Confused as to why people take all these steps when its just unlock>flash recovery>Flash update rom of your choice and done. All these threads on the same thing makes no sense and lets be honest its not that hard to keep up with threads if you search extensively prior to making up a thread which at week three of KitKat you should of thought would be up already.
Not flaming anyone just trying to understand the thought process. Mistakes happen I get it but we got to do better especially with so many people destroying their phones over simple things.... Jus Sayin'

I updated from 4.3 to KRT16O (and later, KRT16S) by omitting the "-w" from the batch file, and I didn't lose a byte of userdata. My bootloader is unlocked, but everything else is stock.
It was so painless, I wonder why I ever bothered waiting for OTAs in the first place.

[Q] WW 10.26.1.7 firmware zip

Hi there,
I've been searching around to find a specific firmware zip for my new tablet, the SKU: WW, Version: 10.26.1.7.
It appears that asus has pulled this file and was wondering if anyone still has this file available somehow.
I soft-bricked my tablet and am not capable of flashing any other (earlier) firmware zip.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Yours sincerely,

I have not made a backup using cwm because there was no CWM available for my version.
My tablet was already updated to 4.3 and I (apparently) could not boot the cwm in the development section.
If I would be able to flash a usable recovery, I wouldn't be in this situation anyway as the asus update (.47) is flashable (found an updater-script in the zip).

Nvflash is inaccessible at the moment, it requires some preparation (you have to prepare it BEFORE you brick it)
Anyway, basically, I bought the tablet a few hours earlier.
Wanted to root it to remove some bloatware and restore some titanium backup thingies.
So I unlocked, rooted, basic stuff.
Went into TB, removed bloatware such as Amazon Kindle and some other irrelevant titles.
That action however, somehow caused it to be unbootable.
So I went into some basic repair stuff, as usual.
Tried to flash a recovery, only to find out, there is no working recovery. Only CWM, which required an earlier version of my bootloader.
So, what next. Restore stock? Downloaded the firmware, found out it was the earlier version of my device, because Asus removed the 4.3-EU version from their website.
So, I downloaded the .47-EU version, opened it. Saw there were no images, merely plain files meant for /system and an updater-script.
I ended up attempting to package my own system.img after that. Created an ext4 image on my computer, moved the files there. Followed the instructions in updater-script, which were mostly symlinks and stuff.
In the end of the updater-script they flashed blob to /staging and boot.img to /boot.
So, I flashed my custom system.img to /system.
Flashed boot
Flashed the blob
And beyond that point, I ended up in a bootloop of my bootloader. I could not hold down volume to enter fastboot or anything. All I could do was watch the asus logo as it constantly rebooted. (And ofcourse, no way to turn it off other than waiting for the battery to die)

Since you are unlocked, you can try to flash the recovery (extract it first) of the US version 1.7, should be the same as wwe. Or just even try to flash the whole us update manually. And later change back to the wwe version when it comes available. The 47 update was only a minor ota for 4.2 so no image of recovery or bootloader there.
Sad story. What would have been the safe thing to do, if others wish to root their devices?

I still had the original recovery flashed, I never overwrote it actually. I needed a custom recovery (such as CWM, TWRP).
Flashing an US update is not possible alltogether, there are some minor differences with hardware compitability and such.
Problem is, I could've downloaded the .47 update, but I had already updated to 4.3 (BL 10.26.1.7)

I don't know if it isn't possible. On the TF700 it was only a line in the build.prop file that made the difference.
I would try it because now you have nothing and when it works you have the us version yes, but at least it works.

Well I meant, what should a root user do to try and protect themselves against bricking their device like you did? Is it a matter of making sure that CWM or TWRP is on the device as a recovery partition? And are those available on TF701T yet?
Oh dear. That's a lot gone wrong.
Cwm is available and that works.
It's made by drgravy. I use it in my unbrick tut.

Don't think that radio needs to be flashed on the N7
Cheers
Tom
I wouldn't flash the recovery partition, either.
The recovery-from-boot.p is in /system. I renamed it before the first boot using TWRP's file manager. I also flashed supersu. It's booting now...need to get to bed, though. Will report tomorrow.
Edit: Boot is successful. L.
Edit: This is my first go around with L. The checking for updates thing at sign on is interesting.
Flashed via fastboot and setting up now. I will report back with initial results and fire away any question you may want specifically answered.
FYI, first boot took about 6 minutes...

Hmmm...I am not getting supersu to work. Flashing the 2.16 zip in TWRP. The app says the binary is not installed.

Yep...thanks.
Hmmm...this is not all that useful without Titanium. Will go back to KK in the AM and wait for a patched kernel.

Have to try probably, not sure whether this will run on a newer build of Lollipop
Cheers
Tom
Kernel version?
Any major differences than the couple of versions built from source?
Fyi, you will probably need SuperSU beta 2.19 and modified boot image for root. There is a titanium backup that works with l (beta). There may be a command that reflashes stock recovery on reboot (it's in /system /bin).

Hangs at the Google logo.

IM guessing we can flash only system and boot...since the bootloader is the same. Plus, we don't wanna reflash the factory recovery.
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash radio radio.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
fastboot flash system system.img

Can I use these steps to clean flash the factory image?
I want to wipe everything and start from a fresh and clean flash.
I haven't flashed a factory image for a long time so I'm out of shape ?
Could someone make a flashable zip for multirom or normal flashing. ?
Nexus Root Toolkit
has anyone tried flashing this via nexus root toolkit? that software recently goot updated to 1.9.3 and has the abiloity to flash the Lollipop factory preview on those devices that got it.
That is exactly way I did. Started fresh and running smooth so far!
I used the toolkit to flash latest TWRP but that was all.

forgot to backup boot.img

So I forgot to backup my stock kernel before flashing franco R23. Can I just extract the boot.img from the update.zip? I'm on LMY47M. Thanks!

yes, assuming that's the build your are running.
flash using fastboot:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
you'll have to root again after, if desired.

Thanks! I'll give that a try.
It depends what you mean bybuodste.zip. if you mean OTA then no but you can normally get it from the factory images but there isn't one for M so you'll need to find the rooted ROM.zip and extract it from there.

^^^ this guy is right, I read the OP too quickly and missed the part about update.zip, I just assumed that we were talking about factory images.
I don't think the boot.img changed after D (including E, M and I), but a little digging around should verify that.
factory images are here:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
whatever you do, do not attempt to relock your boot loader (should you want to for some reason) until everything is working properly.

Good point.
Could download the OTA files and run an md5sum on all the boot patches. If they match in each, they're patching kernel identically and the factory image version for any 5.1 would be appropriate.

No problem, I thought I'd at least try to help
@KAsp3rd W00T -- glad to see that you built this.
The new version of the lafsploit will be out later today, and with it you can use any recovery your want. It handles all the hash verifications internally. It is about as automated as I can make it.
It will be:
./flash-h918-laf.py # Flashes the h918 laf without the need of LG UP, so no brick risks if people aren't paying attention
./root-h872.sh <recovery.img> # If specified, it will use the recovery.img passed, if not, then it will use this version which will be included in the repo
./post-root.sh # This takes care of all the final steps.
So three commands, and that is it. If I could force a reboot back into download mode, it would be one command, but a reboot into download mode is required between each command..

Can you tell me this method? I cannot get this image to stick, it always reverts back to H870, meaning I cannot flash anything custom (guess I could run Remix H870-would that work?)

Flash the image to recovery, use the steps in the root thread to get it to stick and make sure you're actually booting into recovery and not laf

Any idea when this might be ready good sir? I am not in a good place right now with my G6, could really use these commands---stuck in TWRP and can boot a rom, but somehow didnt follow your Step 3 in the Root guide, and my misc.img didnt get moved over, thus I have a rom that cannot connect to Wifi due to lack of MAC--this update would be huge, as I would go back to stock and restart this mess.
TIA
That won't help you now. Hopefully you still have the backup of your misc partition that was made in step 2. If so, boot to TWRP, and run:
adb push misc.img /sdcard/
adb shell dd if=/sdcard/misc.img of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/misc

I used flashify and was promted for a decryption password upon booting recovery. Am I doing something wrong?
(Note that I can still access storage on the original download mode twrp, but not on this one)
Like everyone else I'm also confused as to how I can get the h872 recovery to work without breaking anything since I have the h870 recovery on laf
Stupid question I think, but I get a "Traceback (most recent call last):" after entering ./partitions.py --restoremisc twrp-3.2.1-0-h870.img .
Is there a specific place to put the TWRP ing file ? I think when I run the command its not finding the img.
