Sprint user maybe converting to T-Mobile - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Been a sprint user for 10 years and am debating switching to T-mobile mainly because sprint service is horribad where I live. Just wondering how T-Mobile devices are to root and if a lot of developers make custom Roms for them. I have read the bootloaders are typically always unlocked which is awesome so I assume a lot of developers like T-Mobile, just hoping for some feedback from some current or former T-Mobile users. Thanks much for your help and info

You can use any international ROM on T-Mobile Samsung phones. So...Very good.

I'm finally giving up my Sprint SERO plan for T-Mobile after 12 years, so I'm looking forward to better performance and development too.

Sorry for the very noob question. Just curious what is the advantage to an international ROM over normal rom? or does it really only help if you are travelling? Thanks.

No it's just that people make more ROMs and mods for the European device than the US ones. It doesn't do anything for traveling...its the same exact software without the carrier bloat.

T-Mobile HSPA+ question

Hey i just read this:
http://www.technobuffalo.com/compan...te-tweaked-to-support-t-mobiles-hspa-network/
and i was wondering if there was anything like this that could be done for our note. I do understand that we have different radios and processors, but i'm curious. If i knew how to develop and stuff i would do this, but because im an idiot i can't
Thanks for the help

Not sure you can use the same modem for your device too.I have done flashing captivate modem on my international sgs it worked fine.Dint try that in note. But I say please dont try because note is not unbrickable like sgs.Regarding the development its not that easy to do that. And even it would take few months to even few years depending on your understanding capabilities.Though I'm not a full developer I make my own roms for my sgs so I know it to some extend

I had the same curiosity as you because I really wanted the Note for T-Mobile. From my understanding, the reason phone makers that make identical phones internationally and then make the same phones in the united states but choose a different CPU is because the SOC have the frequencies that support the country. I.e. Tegra 3 vs S4 Qualcomm and Exynos vs S3 Snapdragon (the latter for the US)
I would be really interested to know if someone has successfully flashed a radio for the Samsung Galaxy Note I7000 international version for T-MOBILE.
So it would not be possible to flash the i7000 radio to our notes, correct?

Interested in Dynamic Kat?

Just curious at to if there is any interest in Dynamic Kat coming over to the AT&T S5? I know some of you, and its because of you that I am considering it.
You can check out Dynamic Kat here
If there is enough interest, I will commit to the project.
Brian
I'm loving the ROM from checking out the thread, I'd love to see it on the AT&T S5. I'm a huge fan of AOSP-esque themes and a clean, "pure" android experience. We have very little options at the moment when it comes to ROMs built as such for our device. I'd love to help out in any way I can should you need it :good:

I sported your ROMS before I sold the Note 3. Very nice work. Its to bad I have the Active S5 but hopefully we get a forum soon.
Our firmware currently is >HERE< and I have a restore thread for us Active people here as well. There is not much difference in the bases.
Edit: Needed your help with gps issues but I fixed it. I just re-downloaded the sam mobile link for Actives firmware and Odin back again. I guess my 1st download was a bad one.
i would be interested in trying this out. i'm a fan of dark UI's.
I would love to see you bring it over.
Tell me what the situation is between the S5 and S5 active, other than a few buttons, what is the difference? Does the S5 active work with an S5 rom.
Also, International vs ATT based rom, what is the preference?
@LuckyColdJohnson
I believe I would have it reflashed at Best Buy or ATT. If that doesnt fix it, I believe I would look at replacing it.

The difference in firmware is the extra buttons I bet and maybe two apps. S 5 Roms work on here and yalls root and recovery. I will go to Best Buy tomorrow and see if they can help. Thanks
Yes! That would be awesome

Do it! It would be my new daily driver!
I appreciate the warm responses
Can someone tell me more about the S5A? Specifically what does not work when running a S5 rom.
What is the general preference between international roms vs carrier roms. International rom would be my preference but I will do what ever you guys prefer.

Your ROM looks great! I would be interested. As far as choosing between International vs. carrier, there is no preference. For me it all depends on what features are available and how fast will it run.

+100 on this, AT&T versions are crap. International is way better (Download Booster, Dynamic Auto Brightness, No bloat, etc).
Please base on International version.

International is what I prefer also. You guys have any issues with your phone when using international Roms, this would allow me to easily test on my TMO device.

Best Note 5 Model for modding?

hi fellow XDA peeps,
Please don't bash me... i did some research but still need a bit of advice....
I am interested in purchasing a Note 5, can someone tell me which version/model of the Note 5 is the best for modding and would most likely be the one with lots of custom roms?
I know it might be a bit early to say this but, I'm hoping that you guys can still give me some advice. I did some research and saw that there is a custom rom or two out right now, especially here on XDA but, i noticed this is specifically for the N920 I/C/G. : http://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/development/n920i-dr-ketan-rom-l1-t3195076
Also, I read that the T-Mobile version comes with an unlocked bootloader. Does the other models come with an unlocked bootloader as well?
I would greatly appreciate your help guys and any other advice concerning Note 5 versions/models, modding, custom roms, unlocked/unlocking bootloaders is most welcomed.
sooooooooo......
1) best version/model for modding and most likely to have most custom roms?
2) which version/model comes with unlocked bootloader/s?
Many thanks in advance,
Ronald

"Best for modding" is irrelevant if you can't use the phone for voice/data. So, why not start with telling us where you're physically located and what carrier you have. That may significantly limit your choices.

thx buddy.
I'm located in the Caribbean, we have blazing 4G networks and excellent voice/data services. My present carrier is Digicel but we also have Bmobile (TSTT) here.
I ask "best for modding" because I'm big on installing custom Roms and having full access to the device and what it could do. I could be wrong, but from my understanding devices with unlocked bootloaders are the preferred choices for developers to work on, mod, etc.
thx,
Ronald
Here's the best I can offer you:
Head to this website: http://www.willmyphonework.net/
The following devices have more support on XDA than the others: n920t (tmobile - but they come sim-locked), n920i, n920c. Find the device that works best with your carrier. Eliminate the tmobile choice if needed due to it being sim-locked.

Quite honestly, I'd do my homework and whatever google searching required to find out which LTE bands are supported by the carrier or carriers I use. Then I'd make sure that whichever model I got supported those LTE bands.
Quite often, a carrier might still be rolling out support for an LTE band and it doesn't show on that site I linked to. For example, AT&T in the US is rolling out LTE bands 5, 29 and 30 in some regions, but that site knows nothing about them.... (I can excuse band 29 because it's used for downlink only, and band 30 because they JUST started rolling that out in very few areas.)

nice nice, thanks for the heads up....this what our networks here runs on:
http://roamtheworldcellphones.com/gsmtrinidadandtobago
http://www.gsmarena.com/network-bands.php3
But, the issue is not really the band/s though, its the version that most likely developers would choose to work on and have lots of custom Roms/developments? whatever model that may be, that is the model i would i like to buy. For now it seems like if i can't obtain an unlocked N920T then the next best variant should be the N920I, then N920C. Correct me if I'm wrong in anyway please..lol

No this will not carrier unlock the V40 you have to talk to Sprint about that, but if you sim unlock on stock Sprint Oreo, you may lose it when crossflashing to US unlocked Pie
Stupid sprint is the only company who hasn't released it. Now even some apps say it's compatibility with my phone because developers have put minimum requirements to be able to download on the play store for my phone

I wouldn't go so far as to call them idiots, just SLOW when it comes to updates. I want to switch service providers but sprint and t-mobile are eventually merging, and they will most likely be the first to roll out the 5g network in my area. the fact that i still have oreo isn't THAT big of a deal, because i don't use any apps that are incompatible *yet. I just wish sprint would get the lead out and release the pie update, almost everyone else has.
PIE on the V40 is actually worse than Oreo. Only a couple of the new PIE features are in the ROM, all the major stuff was skipped.
PIE takes away the ability to change to the low power location mode so Google can ping GPS all day for location logging and drain your battery faster. It also limits the wifi scanning frequency for the scanner aps so they are now useless and at work I have to use another phone for setups.

Same question here!
If I understand it correctly, Qualcomm phones have all existing frequencies built in their chips, some obviously hidden/blocked to make it work only on specific network. So why wouldn't the v40 (unlocked) work on T-Mobile if I'm not bothered with 5G at this moment?

If t-mobile is telling you that, it's not true. The sprint device, at&t, verizon are all basically the same, but they have slightly different firmware.
I'd suggest to flash the US Open Pie kdz (there isn't a Q version of it), or, if you're feeling adventurous and want Q, then flash the Korean Open kdz and use the OP partition from US Open Pie to basically get Us Open Q.
The v40 is a great device, very capable. Unfortunately, LG devices have a proprietary IMS stack, which means Lineage or any aosp Rom cannot implement VOWIFI or VOLTE, which means having to stick with the last available version (and security patch) that was put out by the oem.
Oh , and btw, if you go the korean open / OP from US Open, band 71 DOES work! Yes, shocking, but the korean open does support it, even though there is no band 71 in korea!
cheers

Yes, for LG devices, you need the lgup software tool to upgrade or crossflash a kdz (LG's proprietary firmware files).
This is the way we learn. It does pay to read many of the posts in a 'guide' to know what probs others have had, if there are any mistakes in the guide, etc.

Got it debloated but how can you compare it to custom Rom and kernel?
Why would you state a phone is the worst model ever strictly based on a lack of custom ROMs? The availability of ROMs has nothing to do with the capability the phone model has. If you want custom ROMs, you could always do the work to make them. If you don't have the knowledge, there are plenty of devs that have provided help to many on this forum, and I'm sure that you could get help if you're willing to spend the time and put in the effort.

As oneplus phones are great for custom firmware and I always buy them because of it. In this case 5G model is just a piece of rubbish as there is literally NO support from devs. You say do it on my own? Yeah I would like to have few hours of spare time every day to play with it, but as I do not have that time I have to sell the phone and buy something "normal".

I understand your concern but if you look in the correct place TG you will find it. ??
What do you mean not compatible? Because bootloader locked? Or is the hardware different? I managed to unlock bootloader, but have not yet tried to flash a ROM. Are you saying a regular ROM will not work for the OP7 Pro just because it's the 5G version? (I don't need 5G anyway if that's the only problem with 5G OP7).
