Will GearVR support custom roms? - Samsung Gear VR

I was wondering if GearVR will support custom roms, and maybe if Oculus/Samsung can share the custom code with AOSP.

I hope it works when rooted...

Does anyone know where to find the vr manager app?
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Free mobile app

Would love to hear if anyone was able to get Gear VR working on a custom ROM.
I just went back to stock only so I can could try out the Gear VR.

I rooted my stock rom and installed twrp with no problem. So I guess that anyone basing a custom rom on the required updated firmware should be ok...maybe???

Edit: FYI - I'm also using Dynamic Kat 3

You need me too up the content? During setup it will say it can't read your SD card and to insert the one from Samsung, but once in oculus home, everything will be available.

It sees the content but the sbs files don't play properly. It doesn't seem to recognize them as 3d.

Did you put them in a folder called 3D. I think that's what has to be done.

Did you ever download it from me? I sent you the pm

On dk4 and ael, when I inserted note into vr nothing happens, battery at 20% . Charging battery. Is there any tricks to using this with dk4 and ael. Thanks I'm excited about using this

perryh1: Did you install on a Rogers Note 4? 910W8? I'd love a step by step guide on getting this to work. I got a GearVR but not working on the Rogers phone. I'm a bit of a newb when it comes to this stuff. So far I know I need to:
Root the phone (done, using ODIN and the latest version root from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55865442&postcount=3 )
Now I see you guys mentioned DK3 (Dynamic Kat 3) and the AEL Kernel.
For the AEL Kernel, I only found this site to download it from: http://echoerom.com/galaxy-note-4-sm-n910-kernel/
However it doesn't have the Canadian model number listed. Afraid of bricking my phone so I'm wondering where to get the right kernel or to see if the one listed there works?
Any help would be much appreciated!

Will work perfect on the Canadian phone. Even though it's not listed, it works good.

My note had to be pushed in as it needed a deep USB connection, after it was pushed in once it click and connects instantly

Quick question. I am in Canada, using the Rogers network / carrier, with a Note 4 that I purchased from the carrier. Will rooting the device allow me to download the software required for Samsung Gear VR? Here are my current device details:

Alright, slowly but surely.
I've got the phone rooted, downloaded the N4 AEL Kernal via the link, but I get error messages when trying to apply the "update" from the external SD card. The error I get is:
E: footer is wrong

Here is the entire text...

Thoughts?

Okay, one step further. Here are my details now:
Mode number: SM-N910W8
Baseband version: N910W8VLU1ANJ3
Kernel version: 3.10.5-AELKernel-v5.2
What's next? I assumed that it would allow me to automatically download the VR software to my Note 4... no? Do I need to manually install it? If so, from where do I get it?

Ive been trying to pair my brand new Galaxy gear with my Samsung Galaxy s3 Int,
Curent ROM: Cyanogenmod 10.2-20131115-NIGHTLY-i9300

So i found this apk that should work on any devise for Galaxy gear.

I've been trying to search as much as possible at that error message with no results.
Any clues what u should try next ?
(cant really post links yet)
as far as i know, you can't use Gear on custom rom on S3. at least not yet.
i'm using 'official leaked' 4.3 firmware that is bugged and crash a lot, but it works.

Well i was able to connect it with NFC and Bluetooth, so yeah, everything is working atm, Now i'm installing a few apps and see if u run in to something.
Thou kinda whana try lastest Gear manager and see the newer Notifications service..
I'm currently on the Tmobile USA 4.3 TW rom and paired up my Gear with no problems, all functions work properly. I also updated the Gear to the lastest firmware using odin, since the update has not being pushed by samsung here in the US as of yesterday. After updating thru odin, all notifications are being pushed, just remember to also update your Gear Manager app.

There are the page for install galaxy gear manager 1.5...
http://forumxda-developers.blogspot.mx/2013/11/t-mobile-galaxy-s4-42-users-howto-gear.html
FINALLY found a way to get Gear Manager 1.5 working with full notifications on a stock, rooted Galaxy S4. Here's how -
REQUIREMENTS - Null_rom on the Gear, 4.2 stock T-Mobile rooted on your S4. Might work non-rooted, I'm unsure.
1 - Install Null_rom on your Gear (most recent version)
2 - Download the attached .zip file and extract
3 - Install GR.GearManagerStub.apk FIRST. As soon as it's done, reboot your phone and Gear (DO NOT RUN GEAR MANAGER YET)
4 - After rebooting, Install GearManager_1.5.111304.apk
5 - Reboot phone again to be sure.
Start up Gear Manager, pair it, profit.
NOTE: This will wipe and restore your Gear, be aware that although null_rom will continue and you'll stay rooted the sideloaded apps will disappear and need to be reloaded.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/y4w3ciobo1...20Files).zip
I'm using a Dropbox link temporarily to get this out there, but if someone can post a more permanent location for the file I'd appreciate it since I need to delete this one soon. I'll update OP with a new link once someone has it hosted.

[Q] App Installing issues

Hello! I'm new to XDA Developers, so pardon my noobiness.
Basically, I purchased a galaxy gear off ebay, but my samsung galaxy S3 is only running 4.1.3 as stupid Telstra have not rolled out the 4.3 update for the S3 GT-i9305T. I was able to connect my galaxy gear to it by installing gear manager, and most features work... except the apps. When I try install an app, this error comes up: "Installation Failed. Try again later.(0)" and I have no idea what to do.
Basically what I'm wondering if there is a fix for this, or if it is possibly to somehow install 4.3 if my carrier hasn't rolled it out yet.
Thanks!
-Louis

I remember reading on this forum (either in this questions sub-forum or in the General sub-forum), others have talked about apps issues with different versions of gear manager. There is a thread in the General sub-forum that talks about different versions of gear manager. You guys might want to look through that thread and see which version of gear manager works best for your needs. I say that because I remember others were saying that the newest version of gear manager is not necessarily the best at keeping all the apps you installed.
good luck guys.

I think your situation may be a little different than OP's. From your sig your gear is rooted with null rom 26 (btw where did you find that, I thought the latest null rom is only 23?), so you would have a custom recovery on your gear already. Then all you need is to load the apks through bluetooth file transfer on to the gear, and intall it from the gear directly, you don't need gear manager at all for this.
As for why your s3 is not recognizing the gear, I am not sure. I had my note 2 on dn3 kitkat with latest gear manager (1.7 something I think) connected to my gear on null 23 rom and everything was working, including bluetooth file transfer, and I was able to install apks by bluetooth file transfer and then install from the gear itself.

On my note 2 with dn3 v4 beta 2, the downloaded apks from my playstore are in root/factory, different devices may have it in different name.
If you are talking about apks downloaded from internet or transferred from PC, then it most likely will be in root/sdcard/download folder.

I am not sure why your s3 does not connect to the gear, sorry I cannot help as I do not have a s3. one would think it is capable as I have seen gear with null rom connected to s2 before. Perhaps someone else who has a s3 and gear can chime in and lend a hand here?
One thing though, if you have apk's that you would like on the gear, I would recommend staying with android for now, as Tizen is still too new, and of the few apps thats available, they are all from the official Samsung Store, at the moment we cannot install third party apps without going through Samsung Store on Tizen.

[Q] Gear 2 Neo not working VZW Note 3

I am unable to connect my Neo with my Note 3. I tried this on stock firmware with the .apk from the s5 and the version from Samsung Apps (which is newer). I see that people have gotten it to work. Can someone point me in the right direction? I am currently running Clean ROM 1.7.
When using the S5 version of the app, it pairs, then downloads extra stuff, then indefinitely sits at the connecting screen. When I hit cancel and open the app again it says it is not compatible with my device. The one from Samsung Apps just doesn't open at all.

It has everything to do, the link is pointing to an app (fitness with gear) that is specifically designed for note 3 to run NEO. The intention is to see if with that app he is able to connect both. I am not pointing as a solution for sure but he can try, it doesn´t hurt.
Regards.
Again... that has nothing to do with it. If he can't get the gear to connect to his Note 3 it doesn't matter which app he is trying to use... the connection to the phone is the problem. The gear doesn't connect directly to any "fitness or S Health" app. It connects to "Gear Manager"
To the OP.... delete your gear manager app and then go to the first page of the CleanROM 1.7 thread and click on the "removed" apps link. From there... download the gear manager zip file and flash it in recovery. When the phone reboots, open it up and it will prompt to update. Voila.... the connection will be made and all of the correct components will install. Scott, the dev of CleanROM, figured this out so all credit goes to him.

Won't work. That's the Polish TW Rom and Gear Manager works in that, even if you're on an older version. 2.2.114 is an OTA update I got some time ago (I'm in Europe).
Source: I have 2.2.14110499 and I've tried both CM12 and the 1BNL2 Lollipop ROM.
I just got the neo and this scared me bad. It said just install samsung apps from website and then search gear manager. Except when i searched i got a bunch of crappy chinese games that looked like scams.

Most likely when Samsung officially releases lollipop for its phones. Supposedly this month my TMO s5 is supposed to get the lollipop update. If so, I'll update my gear manager and pull the apk files for my nexus 6.

Recently downloaded new version of Gear Manager from Aptoide: Version: 2.2.15011799. Don't know if this will help anybody else, but it has been the only version that loaded & opened (without error/stopped notices etc) on my Galaxy Express (GT-I8730) running CM12. Whilst I have BT connectivity, sadly Samsung Gear App can't find the Gear 2 Neo.
Regards

Samsung Galaxy A9 Pro! Help!!!

I recently bought this phone from a website that is from my country (Romania), not from China and i don't know if it has the latest firmware on it.It has Android 6.0.1 with android security patch level September 1,2016. If i check for updates,it doesn't find any. My baseband version is A9100ZCU1API2. What i'm trying to say is that i don't know if the guys from the website put on the phone a custom rom or not, because if they did there are chances that the phone will never receive software updates and that's my concern. For example, if i buy the phone from China, will it come with google services installed? Because my phone has google play store on it. I don't know if i should download the latest firmware from sammobile and install it with Odin, but the phone might have the bootloader locked or some other stuff and it can't install the firmware and i will be left with the phone bricked or stuck in dowload mode...What do you guys say, should i let it like this for a while and wait for android 7 maybe or it's fine to reinstall the firmware from sammobile? And if i reinstall the firmware will i have google services on it? Thank you!
If you have factory room, you should already got the notification about new FW, as API3 is ancient. I believe latest is AQB2 and Nougat room is in testing phase..
What's saying in Settings/About/SW info/Build number?

I attached a picture with my build number. My main question is if i can reinstall the firmware with odin and that i won't have any surprises...
It's newest build, and I believe it's factory default, so you'll get Nougat directly once it is out
SM-A9100
If i go to settings at the status device tab,it says Official....
I have one more question...Why i can't receive notifications from whatsapp,facebook/messenger, etc.... I think this is a problem on phones that come from China or don't have an international software support.... Is it because Google is not supported officialy on this kind of devices or what is the problem? Be for i got the A9, i had a Leeco Le Max 2 and it had the same problem with the notifications
You need to disable power optimization for these apps, this option pops up from time to time, or you can find it in smart manager, under power options or something. Can not give you exact location as we don't have same SW versions

I don't have that option...i know what are you talking about but i can't find apps optimisation...
Hi Scrapperr,
Sorry to see you're having trouble with such a great phone
I've had the same issue you're describing - the software looks 'untouched' and 'legit' - but it's not, it has been tampered with, just check your Knox counter and you'll see what I mean (https://androidforums.com/threads/guide-how-to-check-knox-and-samsung-official-status.874951/).
App optimization is hidden in Settings / Battery / Detail - once you have the apps listed, select the app that has issues with Notification and go with 'App power saving' - 'Turned off'.
It probably won't work - unfortunately.
I ended up using t'shock's ROM - https://forum.xda-developers.com/samsung-a-series/development/rom-basicplus-1-t3587455 (BasicPlus) - very stable, good battery life, notifications working , but you might have issues with the SD cards - does not recognize cards larger than 32 GB and you might need to format them, in order to be usable with the phone.
If you go with the newest ROM available - listed on https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-a9--/SM-A9100/, you'll notice it does not have Play Store / Play Services and then you'll have to read https://forum.xda-developers.com/samsung-a-series/help/galaxy-a9-pro-chinese-how-to-install-t3388126
Good luck and enjoy using your phone
Hey, Megaurs, thanks for this light stock Rom proposal, somehow I missed it.
Just 2 questions, did you maybe tried Tungtata Rom in order to compare these 2, and what would be advantages of Basic room vs.Tungtata
And, if this Basic room is QB3, isn't it based on latest stock available?

Hi Djurkash,
Testing Tungtata is on my ToDo list, will get to it eventually - if you get to try it, please share your experience
You're right, QB3 is the latest release, as per sammobile.com.
Cheers
