I just found out that we can assign more fingers to unlock our S5 using finger scanner.
When we are registering the fingers. We are asked to swipe the fingers 8 times.
Here's the trick..Instead of swiping the same finger 8 times, swipe different fingers one by one..and all the finger prints will be registered.

I don't think that is a viable option. It seems the wizard scans the finger 8 different times so it has a better reading of the print in the event you don't get an exact perfect swipe. The fingerprint unlock is already awful enough and doesn't work too well. Sure, you can scan up to 8 different fingers with the wizard for a single pass, but I think you would have to scan each finger perfectly afterwards to match the way it was scanned into the phone to unlock it Since you can also store multiple fingers, why not just scan the two or three fingers you would use the most and get a more accurate scan possible with the 8 passes?

Swiping is originally very bad idea. Samsung missed the point. In iPhone you press button and scan your finger at the same time. So, unlocking made by simple press and hold 1 second to unlock.
What did Samsung is utterly nonsense and inconvenient.
I suggest the opposite : Use all 3 in only one finger. This way phone unlocks only with one finger, but scanner has the best possible recognition.
Every time change the angle of the finger slightly, so to read the finger in every situation.

they could not do anything. apple patented that fingerprint system, the same way they patented "a rounded edged rectangle with a circular home button"
apple copies people but does not let themselves be copied. ... SMH

I have successfully set up my finger scanner to work reliably with one hand. What I did was:
1. Hold phone in one hand when registering finger. Make sure to apply a good amount of pressure. I put my thumb at about a 45 degree angle when swiping.
2. Go back into Finger Scanner settings and add two more fingers. Use your same thumb both times, try to keep it at a little bit offset angle (+/- 15 degrees)
3. After registration practice a little with one hand and if it doesn't work well try reregistering your fingers.
4. ???

I did something similar. I usually hold my phone in my right hand so I registered my right thumb twice in the first two slots, each time at a slightly different angle, and the index finger of my left hand in the third slot. Works great!
I just set mine up like u said but during the setup i used both left and right finger and it works. Ex. Right thumb and left thumb all in one finger print setup

Almost the same here. I swiped my right thumb at different angles within the first fingerprint spot, repeated the same for the 2nd (So 16 unique right thumb swipes) and did it with my left thumb on the last slot. I get pretty consistent unlocks.
I did the same in set up works great. Ever since in real world use not so much. Have mine disabled right now

i also used all 3 fingerprints just to register my thumb in lots of different angles (all while holding the phone with one hand).
The tradeoff is that if my thumb print gets "injured", i have to type in my key (no big deal) but the positive is that it pretty much always recognizes my print.
I did this after living for a day with it only registered as one of them and it was 50/50.

This is exactly how I registered my thumb. Works perfect every time!
For the other 2 fingers, I did my left and right index fingers straight up and down like the on-screen animation shows.

I didn't even bother with straight down registering (illustrated on the phone instructions) as I'll never hold my phone with two hands to unlock it. I think if people register a print with their thumb at multiple angles and tilted in multiple ways, they'd have less of a problem. I can easily say that I get an unlock 95% ( or more) of the time now. I registered all 24 prints to my right thumb after realizing I never unlock with my left hand - ever. The outside rim is registered at 8 different locations, from front to back, and angles on the pad. The inside area just to the right-center of my thumb's surface is registered the same, and the actual middle of my thumb was done that way too. This way, no matter what part of my downward sliding thumb hits the sensor, it's been registered.
I used a straight down index finger swipe for the first one, and two of my thumb. It still misses about half the time on the thumb.
I'm new to the S5 literally got this phone 2 days ago. So far I'm loving it everything is good..until I get to the fingerprint sensor. Anybody else Dissapointed on how unacurate this thing is? I like the idea of having it, but they need to fix it or update It somehow. 9/10 times I have to put my password in instead.
I get mine to work with one hand 98% of the time and I can use 4 fingers rather than 3

I wish I could be disappointed. My work disables fingerprint security to access their network. I have to use pin or password.

The quality of the fingerprint makes a huge difference. My wife works in a pretty caustic environment and her fingers get kinda mucked up, nothing we can do will make it work for her. However, it works flawlessly for me.
Another issues is the limited size of the actual scanner makes it dificult to read the fingerprint acurately

+1. No issues here. I was pleasantly surprised.
Though my laptop and my work's timeclock have fingerprint scanners that work in much the same way -- so I've had plenty of practice. :good:
For the life of me can't get the finger print scanner to work well at all. I tried three different times setting it up with very low success rate lol.
Finally just do a swipe pattern out of shear frustration. I would love to do it one handed with my left thumb and tried to set it up this way to no avail.
I have better success if I hold it with left hand and swipe with pointer on right hand. Swipe pattern is so much easier with a 100% success rate.
Works for me every time, youhave 3 finger prints you can asign, use the thumb you unlock for all three doing them in different angles, even switch the angle up on every swipe when setting one print up, figure out the motion you would normally use to unlock it and try setting it up that way.I actually set my right thumb up for 2 of the the 3rd I used my left thumb just in case I'm holding the phone in my left hand, but you don't need to swipe your thumb vertically down, as long as your swiping the whole button it should be good, start with your thumb horizontal and move it a little counter clockwise each time till set up is done.works lawless for me unless I'm at work and my finger is dirty, witch is good because it knows, it's very accurate if set up properly., hope that helps

I've tried numerous times to set it up but it rarely works for me. I had to enter password so many times I disabled it all together. I'll admit that my fingers are frequently roughened or cut at work but even using fingers on my left (non-dominant) hand which are relatively unscathed only gets me success once in awhile.
Maybe it is just not usable for those who work with their hands, bummer as it seemed promising. I rarely had any lock on other devices and thought this might be a lock I could use.
Try again it works , good too, 9 outa 10 times for me,I'm a union electrical so my fingers are always getting cuts and scratches, blisters from spinning wire nuts. Try setting it up like I suggested use your thumb horizontal to the phone or like 45 degree angle like you would if you were doing it one handed, then turn on your power key to lock your phone instantly so you can test it without waiting for screen to time out to lock.

Trying again. Results are better - if I swipe slowly it gets most attempts but not every time. I'll try it for a day and see if I improve, maybe it is more sensitive to angle and velocity than I am. That may improve as I repeat the movement enough to get used to it. However security isn't a large concern so I'm not too upset; it's primarily just the usual annoyance when something doesn't work for me.
Maybe I am just I am expecting too much, do you have to swipe pretty slowly?

You know when you're adding a new fingerprint to the list and you have to swipe the scanner 8 times? Well, nobody said it had to be that same finger, all eight times.
I was able to register all my fingers because with this method i have 24 (3 x 8) places to store fingerprints.
I've seen posts where a dude asked if there was a mod to register more than 3 prints, well it was just that easy!
Can't say if it affects the accuracy of recognition as i found this only 5 minutes ago but so far it seems fine with all fingers.

I suspect that even though you were able to register more fingers, the real life performance of the finger print scanner will be potentially impacted in a negative way since the database of each finger is scarce. In an less than ideal environment such as when you are walking, you might experience poor recognition in the long run requiring more swipes.

I too registered my primary thumb 16 times.
The first time i set it up, i registered my thumb 8 times vertical and 8 times horizontal. I have large hands so i'm able to unlock and swipe with one hand, but i thought it would register the horizontal one as another print.
After a week i removed the horizontal one by accident. I could still unlock it horizontally or in any other direction for that matter, but the acuracy did indeed suffer from that.
I would suggest registering 2 sets (2x8) of your primary unlock finger and the last one a bunch of random fingers or even a finger of your SO.
Never even thought about sideways swiping until now. Plus it is pretty accurate using multiple fingers within the 8 scans. Thanks!

I did the same thing, works great :laugh:
I registered my dominant thumb (one handed) for 8 times vertical swipe and 8 times for horizon swipe. Registered thumb from second hand for 8 times vertical swipe. In one handed use, it works better by moving menu button to top with vertical swipe. These directions (horizontal and vertical swipes) are reversible. It is more comfortable to swipe menu button at top then at bottom.
I have noticed that the fingerprint sensor on this phone is such a piece of ****. After enrolling my fingerprints as usual, the dumb thing unlocked like twice out of ten tries, it made me so mad. This is what I did to get it to work decently.
When enrolling your fingerprint, make sure to
- don't press on the screen, place it as delicate as an angel's kiss
- try to get as many angles as possible, even following the animation when angling your finger
- also try to get it to record your finger perpendicular to the sensor like in this emoji
When unlocking, make sure to
- Try to center your finger as much as possible with the white circle on the display
- If it doesn't unlock right away, keep your finger there for a couple of seconds. Sometimes it does not unlock immediately
Enroll your main unlock finger twice! This is very important to get it to record as much info on each fingerprint as possible. My thumbs are my main unlocking fingers so I enrolled each one twice. Another trick that helped me was to enroll one finger in normal phone holding position, and the other one in more unusual positions like upside down, with the phone flat on a table, and so on). This wasted 4 out of 5 slots though, only one slot is left for a backup finger.
If you apply a screen protector, delete all your fingerprints and enroll them again using the aforementioned tricks.
After doing this it's almost as reliable as a normal fingerprint scanner. Reliability improved from 2\10 to 8\10.
I've seen too may YouTube videos with people complaining about the fingerprint scanner not working great, and when I watch their setup of it, they just spam their finger on the setup screen. You cannot do that. Each time you register a fingerprint it asks you for a specific way to touch the screen. For example when you start you press your full fingerprint on the screen, but then it changes. It asks you to press just your fingertip. then your left side of your finger, and then your right side. It needs to register all angles, and if you just spam your basic fingerprint you will have issues.
Slow down, and read what it is asking. If you are having a mixed experience with the fingerprint scanner try to redo it following what they ask when doing so.

Exactly. I saw one video where the reviewer wasn't even getting the finger properly on the scanner & not even giving it a sec to register & then goes on blabbering that it's not working.
Man, I've redone mine plenty of times and have followed exactly what it says, but mine works maybe 2/10 times. But I don't care too much about fingerprint. Face unlock works great though.
When the icon is moving, during fp registration, which part of finger i need to scan? It start in the center then it's move to the right down a little and then same but on the left, during this phase i don't really understand which part of my fp i need to scan. I hope I explained well

If I remember correctly you do each like four times. Full press, tip, left side, right side. It will ask you to move your finger around during each one. Like for the first one press your full fingerprint in the center of the circle. Then a little to the top, then bottom, then left or right.
What it's doing is trying to capture as many angles of each try all over the unlock area to prevent you having to try it over and over. If it saves your touch in four different places on the fingerprint scanner surface then you don't have to try to press exactly in the middle.
After registering your fingerprint it should have about 16 different angles saved for your one finger. You can save up to four fingers all together.
I've deleted all my saved fingerprint and registered them all correctly. Now its working ALWAYS. It's all there, just to follow accurately the on-screen instruction to setup proper fingerprint(s)

Anecdotally mine has been working much better than my Pixel 6 was.
I wasn't sure why people were hating but this makes sense. Has been working great for me; all I had to do was read the instructions
I have followed the instructions very carefully, to the letter. And still, 3/4 times the fingerprint scanner does not work. And I did not have a screen protector on, either.
I had Samsung Galaxy S20 and now I have a Pixel 6, and on either phone, the fingerprint scanner works quite reliably.
I admit that I may have a faulty unit, but too many people are complaining about the very same problem, so it isn't just a few users who can't comprehend instructions.
Does the icon move when you register your fingerprint? I recall it was moving once I enrolled my fingers for the first time, now it sets still.

Yes, it was moving all over when setting the fingerprint scanner.
I mean I had this moving icon only for the first time, it didn't show up ever after this.
My tip is: If you have issues with a specific finger just register it more than one time.
I wasn't pressing high enough on the screen for the angle I hold the phone. Also pressing lightly helped. Working 80-90%
I've registered the same thumb for all 4 profiles and it still only works like 2 out of 10 times. I know I've been doing it correctly from the beginning! It seems like it works great for the first 30 minutes right after registering the print, after that it gets worse every time I use it.
Is there a way to add more than 4 fingerprint?
I am really disappointed with the Pixel 7 fingerprint and face unlock. They are the worst; even my older Pixel 4 has a better face unlock. It heats while charging and even the battery life is decent, it is running on the latest March 2023 update!

Followed instructions to the letter about ten times for each monthly release. I've tried registering finger multiple times, various pressures, and all the other published tips. After registering, per the instructions, I've consistently gotten about 25% with a dry finger and 80% with a moist finger. The FPS simply stinks for lots and lots of us.
