[Q] Anyone find the screen brightness sub par? - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Surprised I've not seen this mentioned (Maybe I have a faulty device) but my screen brightness isn't that great. Also the whites don't seem too white ... more brownish-yellow. Coming from a Note 3 so maybe Samsung has spoiled me ... I'm also finding the Moto X display practically unusable outdoors on a sunny day.
Here are some side by side pics ... first is with both on auto brightness and the second is with both at 100% brightness

yeah I REALLY have no issues on that and haven't heard anything like that either so I think you may have a faulty device.

So were the Moto X on display brighter or just as bright as your Moto X?

I thought the colors were fine, even coming from the m7 but my gf bought a note4 yesterday, wow those whites are really bright and white

My colors are very warm (yellowish) compared to my N5 or old G3, but the brightness (I feel) is a bit too bright on the auto sensor for my liking. Maybe I just got used to the G3's screen, that sucker was very dim.

Sorry for not checking back in ...
The store models all looked the same as my X. I've since returned it and went back to my Note 3. When the Turbo dropped I went in store to compare screens with my N3 and sadly the Turbo has the same dim whites as the X ... So, I'll be hanging with my Note 3 for a while longer

According to the tests I've seen by PhoneArena and Anandtech, the Moto X (2014) is supposed to be brighter than the Note 3 at maximum brightness, I wonder why I've been reading differently from users. Either way, it's disappointing because outdoor visibility is really important to me.

Was the Moto X unusable outdoors even on auto brightness? I've seen your OP but that looks like a dark room, so maybe outdoors under auto brightness the display went bright enough?

On a bright sunny day, yes, it was practically unusable ... Sometimes viewing things in the car was even difficult if it was sunny out. LOVED the phone otherwise though, but the screen was enough to break me

Correct, in my case auto brightness did NOT help with outdoor viewing nor did manually turning the brightness up to 100%

You're most welcome! Glad I could help you out ...

I checked out my Maxx screen vs the Turbo & X 2014 at the local Vzw corporate store.
The Turbo was on par with the Maxx while the X was little dimmer. Which is better than the 1st X.
I made sure settings were the same.
My Maxx is typical & not great outdoors but better than my string of X's.

Didn't watch the video, but the color temp is rather balanced. It isn't too warm. I own an iPhone 5 as well and the Nexus display looks just as good.
Quite honestly it's going to vary wildly from unit to unit as well. I recall once putting 4 iPhone 4's right next to one another and one was green, one was purple, one was orange, and one was blue.
Its not possible to gauge LCD color from a video because the camera changes what it thinks is supposed to be white to pure white, its called white balance. The camera is being white balanced to the iphone, which screws up the way the Nexus looks, it is probably white balancing the iphone because its a lot brighter.
Comparing the colors of LCD's from pictures is pointless, you have to know what you are doing and be using a camera that can set a manual white balance.
As for the whites on the Nexus 4, they are great but should actually be a little bit warmer.
I'm with the op..
I had my Nexus 4 up against an iphone 5 and there's no comparison, the iphone 5's screen blows it out of the water.
I then had it up to the old Galaxy S II I had and the screen was immensely better as well.
Only thing that it looked better then was my nexus 7, and that isnt saying much...
It can be different between devices. I've read that some devices didn't have time for the glue to fully cure and they had a warmer tint because of it, but after a couple days it was sorted out. Possibly the phone in the video has the same problem?
Check out this review. I linked to a spot where he has an all white page for a little bit and you can clearly see it's nowhere close to the phone in your video

Dude that's a Galaxy Nexus and an iphone 4... the guy is completely ripping off Armando Ferreira's video... and he has comments pending approval so nobody can correct him and put up a creative license LA so he won't be taken down... this has to be the biggest douchebag I've ever seen...
It is highly possible that even the Nexus 4 uses different IPS panels.
We've seen things like that in many devices, be it phones, laptops, and even TVs. Most prominent "case" is probably the Retina Macbook Pro where the LG made panel has way worse quality (LG normally makes god-tier panels, it's just that particular model where they screwed up) than the one manufactured by Samsung.
So, I'm almost certain that, even though LG makes their own panels, the Nexus 4 comes with different panels and some might have different characteristics.
Only side-by-side comparisons or teardowns of different batches will tell if there are in fact different screens used in the Nexus.

The iPhone 5 is a tiny bit more vivid, but if you don't have them side by side it would be difficult to notice the difference. And the screen on my Nexus doesn't look extremely warm like the one in that video. Seems like he got a poorly calibrated unit, or maybe he had the brightness lower on the Nexus and it made it look warmer.
Here's some comparison shots with the iPhone 5.

Wow...my Nexus 4 screen is almost identical to the iPod Touch 5G (the one with the same panel as the iPhone 5) in terms of temp and whites. That looks like a bad screen to me.

The one in the video looks bad, I agree, but mine is fine. If anything, the iPhone 5's screen is slightly too warm, but in real world use (aka, not in pictures), my Nexus 4 and iPhone 5 screens look very similar.
The video doesn't mean anything, as someone stated before camera white balancing will do weird things to the image. The best any only way to accurately compare the two is side by side, in person..which is exactly what I did with my friend's iphone 5 yesterday. There is absolutely zero difference in quality between the two screens. Brightness is fantastic on both, colors look amazing, etc. Go test in person at an apple store or with a friend's iphone 5 and see for yourself.

Can you be more specific? Brightness level, which direction your tilting it, whole screen/part of screen etc
All brightness level. The whole screen had a yellow hue if look at it straightly. But the yellow tint will disappear if the phone is tiled to any direction by 10 degrees.

Mine does this too- it's a "feature" of the last gen OLED displays that Samsung have fixed with the new gen (which Moto obviously couldn't source for this phone). My Nex did this too. Screen adjuster + manual brightness over 50% fixes it for me

interesting.. you mind sharing you setting for the screen adjuster? It's quite obvious and I wonder how all those online reviews don't seem to mention it. A blob of yellow/orange-ness moving across the screen as you tilt the phone
Just went to att store and it seems their display device also have the similar issue but a bit less. Maybe NY last phone, HTC one x, and retina mbp have made me too sensitive for such color changes..

Edit:
There's also the chance of getting a bad battery or an underperforming processor.

I don't think so, but anything can happen. And not just with Motorola, defects happen everywhere. I guess my point was that since everything else with my phone is perfect except for a yellow tint depending on viewing angle, I'm not going to roll the dice and replace it unless I know the yellow screen is a fluke.

Yeah, that's when the screen goes into super turbo boost mode lol.
When Automatic Brightness is turned On, the Galaxy Note 4 reaches an impressive 750 cd/m2 in High Ambient Light, where high Brightness is really needed – it is the brightest mobile display that we have ever tested. As a result of its high Brightness and low Reflectance, the Galaxy Note 4 has a Contrast Rating for High Ambient Light that ranges from 100 to156, the highest that we have ever measured for any mobile display.

And just so you might wonder why the screen is so dark lol
Super Dimming Mode
The Galaxy Note 4 also has a Super Dimming Mode that allows the Maximum Screen Brightness to be set all the way down to just 2 cd/m2 (nits) using the Brightness Slider. This is useful for working comfortably without eye strain or bothering others in very dark environments, or affecting the eye’s dark adaptation, such as when using a telescope. The display still delivers full 24-bit color and the picture quality remains excellent.

Happened to me today, but everything was still legible....looks crazy at first....thought my screen was talking a s***. But yes it is a feature that needs some tweaking, but apparently as long as auto brightness is Not selected it won't switch like that in bright sunlight. Looks kinda like a negative polarization effect with a bright wash.
And are ya switching phones or swapping for another note....because the "issue" will be on any note 4

Isn't that setting for auto brightness? I want it to adjust brightness from light to dark rooms. But I don't want super nuclear mode in the sunlight. Looks terrible. Was trying to shoot pictures the other day with the sun at my back and I wasn't sure if it was the camera acting up or the screen. Only after I took the pictures and reviewed them later (indoors) did I realize they were ok. They need to fix this.
I love this feature. If you hover your finger over anything it puts a shadow over it. Pretty tight imo
Im not the biggest fan of this, it makes everything look really weird, especially when your trying to film something or take a photo as its hard to see what its actually going to look like. But i guess it does make the screen more visible. FYI disabling auto adjust screen tone makes no difference

Dim dim dim

Man, I went in with the full intention of buying this today, but the screen was SHOCKINGLY dim. Turned it all the way up. Dim. Thank god my Verizon store is dumb and has the droid table right by the door, so some light was coming in, because I'm site it would not have seemed as bad in the dimmest back corner. Then they had Note4 nest to it, seems out was very bright, sip as to emphasize the Turbo shortcoming even more. Guess I'll wait for Nexus

Been in two different VZW stores and have seen 6 different Turbo's and I 100% agree. The screen is a deal breaker. Compared to my Z3, the turbos screen is disgusingly bad, both in brightness and color reproduction.
Really bummed about it too because the rest of this device is amazing.

People need to confirm which build they are viewing. There was the day 1 update and many people who have the updated are saying their brightness is fine. There's no patch notes to yet to prove it was altered, but I think its a worthy thing to check if that fact is the only deal breaker for you. You might even be able to update the store models and see a difference.
Newest build is 21.21.15.en.US I believe.

Actual screenshot(from moto x4)
Why does display looks red when the color is Orange. Is this real colour of the display or is display defective?
Are you on vibrand mode? Try on normal, maybe will make difference.

Unfortunately, X4's display is supersaturated when you use vibrant color option in display settings. and normal mode is under-saturated.
a custom kernel can solve this issue by small amount, but it's still can't fix it to normal levels. it's a real issue for me too specially after coming from Nexus 5x's awesome colour correct screen.

EDIT : Definitely, I previously used moto z which has AMOLED panel with vibrant colors but after using this the screen seems dark and I think It will take time to adjust to it. Overall a great device.

@kraatus90
Now it's really getting on my nerves. I mean seriously I can't get used to this. Is this display is made to look like this or is it the fault of stock android?
DUPLICATE

I think they have done this to please those guys who love punchy colors of Amoled displays. stock android has nothing to do with it it's just how they have made/calibrated vibrant profile.
the thing is looking good =/= perfect. people don't get it and always demand Amoled screen. thanks to that moto has made IPS panel too saturated. it can be fixed somewhat with custom kernel. but i won't recommend it right now because we don't have proper TWRP yet.

I can live with this if I can get used to this.
it goes super hyper vibrant only in powersaving mode, it's on purpose and there is no way to turn it off. othherwise it's not that bad
I observed the same as well. When I compare my Moto X4 to any other highend phones like the S8, iPhone 7, HTC U11, etc,.. the X4 seems to be darker (a bit saturated).
The issue is that all pics look dark on the phone so when I edit something and post it say, on Instagram. It will look really bright.
It's hard to edit now coz I don't know how it will look like on other devices.
I hope they will have another color mode aside from the vibrant and standard. Somewhere between the two.
