[Q] SDcard restrictions in the new Note4 ? - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How does the Note4 handle SDcard OS restrictions that I've heard about in recent Android updates (My rooted Note2 with Device Status of Normal still runs 4.1.2 & has no such sdcard restrictions)?
Any downsides to the new Note4 besides its speaker that sounds quite unpleasing at max-higher volumes? -Thnx

Any owners here comment on this? -Thnx

Out of the box? It seems like every other KitKat device: the built-in file browser has unrestricted access to the SD card. 3rd party apps (that is, not Google or Samsung) have limited write access.

Appreciate the reply, since I don't have this issue with 4.1.2 on my Note2.. From your response I gather that the built-in file browser on my Note2 that seems to be called "My Files" should therefore be used to perform sdcard write operations over the Astro/File Expert/ES File Explorer apps etc with KitKat-Lollipop? I assume the Note4 has a "My Files" built in file browser app that would have unrestricted access-problem solved?
Non-Google-Samsung apps would have what kind of limited write access & how problematic is this in real world use of a 32GB Note4 because I've seen people complain quite a bit about it-some going as far as saying they wouldn't buy it with only 32GB & these sdcard limitations however it seems rather manageable the way you describe in your reply (i.e. use Samsung-Google apps to perform such write operations to sdcard & have non-Samsung-Google apps write to internal 32 GB storage)?

Did you root yet? Read that whole thread
NOTE 4

I rooted my Note2 via ExynosAbuse with Device status Normal but don't want to depend on a root if it voids warranty.. so would the solution be to use Samsung-Google apps to perform such write operations to sdcard & have non-Samsung-Google apps write to internal 32 GB storage &/or how problematic is it in real world use with many apps wanting write access? -Thnx

Yes, the built-in file browser is still called My Files. It's not bad, as in, it's not horribly unintuitive. It does lack some features (ability to change file extensions, cloud syncing beyond dropbox).

The only restriction would be you can only use my files for transferring or editing files, its the only app with writr access. And the speaker is great, no unpleasing sound, metallic sounding maybe, but loud and clear! Even at full vol.
The display model speakers sound terrible tho, wonder if they changed it last second.

After I formatted it, I had no issues writing and deleting stuff on it. Bummer I know lol but you can always back it up first.

Yes!:highfive: I did notice when I finally played with the Note4 in black at an AT&T store this week the speaker sounded much better than the three white demo models at Best Buy that sounded terrible at max volume & had me constantly adjusting the volume not to hate it..still not sure I'd call it great or as full sounding or as satisfyingly loud as my Note 2 speaker but it was actually more consistently crisp yet as you mention more metallic-tiny sounding however when the store got loud some lower volume recordings were difficult to hear well so I'll have to test more to see if the speaker could be called an upgrade from Note2.. I'm glad to hear someone else noticed that the original demo speakers sounded terrible at max-higher volumes while they now do not so I'll check the speaker out again compared to my note 2 & others. Do you own the black or white because I also noticed the black felt better-grippier-more premium in the hand than the white harder models at Best Buy so want to make sure the speaker difference also couldn't be a white-black thing (no pun intended; )..
Glad the sdcard issue is not a deal breaker so not sure why people complain about it so much..
I will say the black note4 with its metal accents looked & felt suprisingly wonderful in the hand however I'd still likely keep it in a protective case & I actually felt like I could go bigger.. not sure if I'm psyching myself up for the 5.96" slightly larger Nexus 6 but but I'll definitely have to compare them asap.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-tmobile/help/t-mobile-note-4-vs-nexus-6-t2906994/page4

I love the speaker, while not too full, can be extremely loud and does its job with no distortion.
I have the black one and i like the feel a lot better! In the end though, the production models have the same speaker, my friend has a white one and it sounds the same as mine, maybe even harsher, not sure if the white back cover being harder plaus with the sound a little. Still, its nit a big difference at all, you would need an extremely trained ear to tell.
I like it better than my old note 2 speaker, louder and clearer, it sounds better at home than it does in store! But trust me whn i say the note 4 is the greatest device i have had, save for some small issues, but i fixed them and its running amazingly!

So everyone agrees-no sdcard issue?

Do you still have the Note 2 or are you working from memory when you say the Note 4 is louder?
Good to hear you love the speaker & that it sounds better at home. Interesting thought if the stiffer back cover on the white model could affect sound quality but I'd suspect that those Best Buy demo models have different software settings just like they have demo modes to attract attention with their volume even if they sound terrible at that strained volume. I remember being very surprised with the black AT&T Note 4 sound quality not having the Best Buy strained volume quality issues.
I agree the black model I tested sounded more crisp than the Note2 but still didn't seem as full sounding & more metallic-tiny sounding..but I will test it again in a less noisy environment. I'm excited to test the Nexus 6 vs Note 4 as the Nexus 6 looks more like the future now being unlocked with Android L with dual front facing stereo speakers & ~6" screen. Would a removable battery & sdcard & spen make the Nexus 6 better, yes it would but I already have that with the Note 2 that I'll not trade in & curious about a larger upgrade than the Note 2-Note4.. I'm open to getting both the Nexus 6 & Note 4 if the Nexus 6 & Note 2 don't satisfy me..
So everyone agrees there really is no sdcard issue as long as one just uses the native file manager..? :good:

Just reformat the sd and you'll be able to use any file managers. I'd despair if I was stuck with the default one lol.

So if you just reformat the sdcard (in the device to exfat?) then there are no sdcard restrictions at all in any file manager?
Everyone agree? That sounds like a more complete solution to sdcard restrictions..

I still have the note 2 handy, and yes, to me, the note 4 sounds louder, like it has more push, and i found out if you boost the lower mids in the stock music app or poweramp, the speaker sounds a lot better and more full.
Honestly, i would recommend the note over the N6. Being the reasons you stated, and because it is just such a huge device with no extra functions. Unlike the note, there is no help making thw screen or keyboard smaller to help with daily use with one hand. And android L should be on the note 4 by late november, so, im keepin my eyes peeled, it seems samsung actaully updates their phones in a timely manner now!
But yeah, in the end its your choice, but the note 4 is a great device overall, and if you want to be more persuaded, watch MKBHD's note 4 review. its great.

On a PC in File Explorer: Right click on the sdcard drive then left click Properties but I'll post back when I find a card I don't mind formatting in Android to see if it's there in Settings-Storage etc. All my sdcards have arrived formatted in exfat.

[Q] Need help. Deciding between the note or HTC one x

Hi people.
I currently own a Samsung note international version. Installed a custom rom and did the whole nine yard.
Don't have any persistence issue or bug with it. Overall I'm happy with the device.
And now, someone wants to trade my note for an HTC one x. I'm tempted. Quad core processor, beats audio and the 720p screen.
Benchmark figure for the one x is amazing and the design isn't too bad either.
Anyone can please give me some advice on wether or not I should trade?
Right now in my head is bigger screen on the note vs raw power of the one x
Please advise
Thank you
Htc might be quadcore but the best trade for note would be s3...and the screen resolution and clarity of htc is nowhere near Note...so if your not a big fan of the screen size...its a good trade...
Thank you for the thought. I think I'll keep my note for now

So true. I look at other phones now and think damn !! How did I manage with that for so long
I will never downgrade screen size again

What makes Note different?
Pen.
Screen size.
SD Card slot.
Lower specs.
What is more important for you?

One X has plenty of reasons to avoid it:
1) Smaller screen
2) Locked bootloader (and even if you unlock it, major restrictions on developers)
3) Beats Audio is a pile of marketing bull****. If a vendor resorts to something like that, they're likely hiding audio deficiencies.
4) Nonremovable battery
5) Nonexpandable storage

+1 All the same issues that I had on my One S.
Also there is no S-OFF so that makes things a lot harder, HTCDev is the only way to unlock bootloader - thus telling HTC you are modding your device !
Not to mention the lack of multi-tasking (unless you run init.d scripts)
And finally, Tegra 3 quad core !?!?! Huge battery drainer and **** performance, The One S had snapdragon S4 and blew the One X away in benchmarking !
The Note is still a pretty powerful device and has a way better screen. I wouldn't changemy Note for anything right now. Not even an S3.

Hey,
I wouldn't trade the Note. What is the use of a quad core. It is still not widely supported and the screen and the pen of the Note *are* a real runner
c.
I have both, note doesn't get used anymore.. battery is about the same. Hox is smoother, better browser experience, easier to hold, fits in pocket, but not as moddable. For me, the screen experience is better too on the hox. The note's screen was giving me headaches whilst reading, either on kindle or aldiko apps. If it wasn't for this, I wouldn't have bought the hox. The s pen is good, but not perfect.
You also look like a **** answering the phone when the note rings... so I was told....
Each to his own though..
sent via potential brick...
Edit: beats audio is pretty ****..
Edit 2: the hox isn't that much faster than the note, not twice as fast anyway... just smoother... Some of the games are pretty good too.
Headache may come from too much brightness or maybe you need glasses (not kidding!!). I can read on the note but i have to adjust the brightness, i have a problem with bright lights so i for one can say that if you adjust it maybe it will be better. My brightness is on 20%, ok reading something in direct sunlight ia a pain, and at night it doesn't hurt my eyes. Try it out...... Try not to brick your phone.

Tried all this, and different reading apps, and screen filter. Had no issue with my galaxy s, read loads of books, so assumed I wasn't overly sensitive to the pentile screen... But maybe it was just too much...
No headaches with the hox yet, on my second book. All is well.

I came to the Note from a One X. Main reasons I switched were terrible audio quality, terrible battery life and poor physical design. The Note is much better than the One X in all of those areas.

Anyone try the Nexus 4?

I've had my Note since November 2011 (well a Note as I lost one and proceeded to buy another one). I still love the phone, the screen size is great and the white Note still gets a lot of attention over a year later (most people call it or actually think it's the mini ipad). Well I just successfully ordered a 16gb Nexus 4, now I am trying to decide if I will give it as a gift and keep the note or try something new. Does anyone have both and can tell me the pros and cons?
I like the Notes screen size, sd card slot, TW and honestly that it's still a unique device however I like the specs on the Nexus 4, NFC, wireless charging, and LED light. I feel the note is actually better looking than the Nexus and although I heard the Nexus has great build quality it will just got lost in the sea of black phones versus my white Note. I am not too concerned with the 16gb, I used to have a 16gb iphone and never ran out of space. I honestly am torn, I am not sure if some of the new features outweigh the screen size, uniqueness, and TW? Any other opinions? I realize they will be bias in the Note section.
Also any comparison on cameras, I love how great the pictures come out on my Note in the dark. My friends with iphone 4 and iphone 4s always want me to use my camera since it takes such better pictures than their phones when the flash is on, I wonder how the nexus 4 camera compares to the original Note camera?
BTW don't care about removeable battery or the spen, I barely ever use it.
I suffer from a severe upgradeitis, and since Nexus 4 is actually affordable (which couldn't be said about the GNex), I am jumping ship and getting myself one. I will probably suffer because of the smaller screen (I really got fond of Note's size), and I loathe the lack of microSD slot, but I love everything else about the N4.
I am with the N4...
You'll suffer for:
smaller screen
less vivid colors
lower quality of the camera
spen (if you use it frequently)
You'll like:
Google updates
smaller screen (will let you use it with one hand)
your wallet
led notifications
project butter full compliancy
impressive response

I was thinking about getting one, but i don't like the hardware. Smaller screen and it's actually thinner than the Note, but it looks like a damn brick. Most of you don't care about these things, but i do
My Nexus 4 arrives December 10th. For me, I'm going to miss the screen the most on the Note which I still think is one of the nicest to look at. My wife has the One X which everyone tells me is the best display on a phone, but we both prefer the colours and general impression of the Note, even if they are unnatural.
Biggest reason for the purchase is that I'm tired of Samsung's BS with software updates and closed-source platform. I want the latest version of Android when it's released, not months later. I use aosp anyway, have never liked TW.
Things I expect to like about the Nexus are the smaller size (I don't know why but after a year of having the Note I'm starting to find its size prohibitive more often than I used to) , LED notification, proper Butter, software updates and general speed.

None of you is bothered by the lack of an SD card slot? To me, this is definitely a showstopper along with the non-removable battery (iPhone style for the lose).
My main concern about the Nexus 4 is that it is just generic Android. I don't like the bloat around the other implementations such as TouchWiz, but there's a couple of dealbreaker bugs in stock Android that Samsung, HTC etc have fixed. I don't know why Google haven't.
In particular the Email client can't work with Exchange when offline. Deleting emails on the device leaves them all on the server still, even after connection is established and sync run. Makes it pretty useless for managing emails on a commute. Samsung, HTC and even Motorola have fixed this problem, but it's still in the base Android and has been since at least ICS and possibly HC. Google don't seem interested.
It gets even worse with Imap, where it puts all the emails you've deleted back on the device once you sync. Again HTC and Motorola have fixed this, although Samsung has this problem.
Seems a basic issue, but means I won't recommend these devices for corporate use until it is fixed.
Nick
I don't care about non-removable battery, I only take out my battery if I need to access my SIM or SD card, so not a big deal for me.
Lack of SD slot and puny internal memory is a bummer for sure, but I've decided I can live with that. In return, I get stock android experience without the need of using custom ROMs (and let's face it - while CM10 for the Note is awesome, it has its issues), I'm always up to speed with new Android releases (instead of waiting for CM to catch up), awesome hjardware, and great looks. Fair tradeoff in my opinion. I will mourn the lack of SD slot and lack of FM Radio, but I'll deal with it. I got my Note last year only because it was carrier-subsided, and I couldn't afford to buy an unlocked GNex.
Got the phone in, so far I rooted it. I need to play around with it for a bit before I decide which phone I want to keep.
Yes I bought 3 nexus 4 mobile phones really amazing phones hyper fast feels good gonna rom it rip it root it to the max.... This baby will blast off!!!!

I too have the nexus 4
Sold my galaxy note
And yes there's a difference in size but you get use to it
It's amazingly fast and already with 4.2.1
I'm rented by the price but lack of micro sd ruins it. Out of the 16 gig you will be lucky to have access to 11gig, as with other phones. I love my music and have a lot of roms on board so 11g is nothing.
From the man in your attic...
Can I just ask around a question, real quick. What's all that speed for? (casual) gaming?
Nexus 4 for me is the Android version of an iPhone, and unfortunately I am not meaning it as a compliment. As someone already stated in this topic, no sd card, no removable battery just means that if you want to take lots of pictures, videos, get your off-line Navigation with the entire Europe Maps (about 3.7GB) on your device there is not much left for anything else. I have seen a review where they state that only 12,3GB are available for the end user. That might be OK for some people, but I am not one of them.
Another thing is that if you want to use it a gamers phone, with this storage and HD games now available you will be able to get 3, maybe 4 big games in it, which is not something I would call ground breaking.
Last but not least, the battery in the phone will loose its charge over time. I am not a type of person to carry with me extra batteries and swap them around, but after some time everyone notices that their battery is not what it used to be. Specially when you want to buy / sell a second hand phone, being able to change the battery for a new one and enjoy your phone as when it was unpacked is something that Nexus 4 users will not be able to experience without getting their hands dirty and probably voiding the warranty of the device.
Sound Problems?
Does anyone here suffer from the Earpiece Defect in Nexus 4 that got mentioned in Mashable?

I know the OP doesn't care, but for me this is the showstopper (which would only change if a reasonably priced 64gb model came out). As others have said, this is the iPhone of Androids, and not in a good way. The lack of removable battery gets me as well as I use my phone so much that I need either two batteries or an extended battery.
But the pros are Butter, good updates etc. But personally ill stick with the Note until the Note 3 (or something better arrives), mainly through choice than cost.

Well, I have a the distortion going on. Like, for the quality of the speaker to be good and not have any type of audio artifact, I need to keep the volume at 30% at all times. Anything higher, and certain pitches starts distorting/cracking. I guess one "fix" for this would be to change the kernel code to restrict the volume range of the speaker so that the maximum would be much lower. It could be the case that the kernel is actually overdriving the speaker module which results in the distortion. Whatever it is, it is definitely annoying to hear the edges of a person's voice gets distorted.
It's like they opted to use the cheapest POS speaker module they could find with an extremely limited range. The speaker on the Galaxy Note is a world better.
I have both....the screen size is something to get used to without a doubt. It is so tiny, but it is bearable. The constant updates from Google makes this phone worth it seeing how Samsung is a POS when it comes to releasing sources.
I'm also seeing some banding on the screen. Not sure if it's because of the screen or due to the image used (low bit).
I have an RMA on the way soon and will compare how the newer unit fares.
As NickC42 pointed out, I don't like stock Google android for few of these nitpicking stuffs -
1. Does not support speed dial? Hello Google!!??
2. Email/Calendar clients are white background black text. Why can't they have optional reverse color?
3. Oh I didn't know about those Exchange Email annoyances - total dealbreaker.

1.Install custom rom/mod
2.Install inverted gapps
3.No single issue with exchange.
All this can be solved in 10 mniutes. This is Android. Want everything out of the box? Buy iPhone.
My reasoning was why I do not like stock Android aka Nexus. If I have to install custom ROM, it defeats purpose of buying a Nexus device.
Edited: Ask yourself ahalford why do people buy Nexus device? Because they get update from God Google on day one. What is use of that update if it never fixes few of the basic things?
Edited 2: Maybe you have iPhone hidden inside your secret stash and know it enough to recommend to other people. How about giving us out of the box experience one gets from iPhone?

Nexus 6 - difference between both models

I love this handset. So much so that i purchased another one. The first one i purchased on the 9th of december for £499, and the second just yesterdyesterdayay for £549. Call me crazy, but it got so bad i was actually dreaming about the white 64gb version as i had originally purchased the blue 32gb version.
The nexus is not perfect. It has a few faults that need to be addressed, firstly being the in ear call volume. Its awful. The volume for listening to music via headphones is awful too. I was expecting so much betterbetter considering the stereo speakers are really good. The handsFree volume is also mediocre, and also, when i tap the handsfree icon during a call, theres a pause/delay of a few seconds which has become an increasing annoyance.
Anyhow, back to the main point. The white 64gb versions screen is inferior to the 32gb blue version i have. Its noticeable. The 64gb screen has a tint to it, isnt as vibrant and colors seem more washed out. Has anybody else experienced this? ive become disheartened. I wanted to love it as much as i do as the 32gb blue version, but its annoying that the screen seems inferior and darker and tinted.
I Love absolutely everything else about this handset. I am literally in love with lollipop, the screen size, the stereo speakers etc, but this difference ive noticed is playing on my mind. I have also noticed the 64gb is slower at opening apps when i place them side by side.
Either way, i still love the blue 32gb, and i am totally out of pocket for the remainder of the year due to these purchases, but Google has definitely injected some magic in there somewhere. Ive never purchased 2 same handsets around the same time before.
Can anyone assist me? Do you think i should return it for an exchange, or is this variation among screen quality common?
Most of us only have 1 phone. Maybe try posting a picture of both phones showing the same image with equal screen brightness settings so we can see what you mean?
wth...why do u have to use TWO lol...root that 64gb and install custom kernel/rom and use different profile colors RGB , i use 237.235.255 and it really is way better then the stock colors , and yes nexus 6 seems to 'lag', i think its more of a lollipop issue and also on what type of RAM and eMMC u have on the nexus 6... i have hynix ram and sandisk eMMC 32gb
i experience lag on certain apps/situations as well but i get great battery life as a tradeoff
You see a large box in an alley. The box has a sign on it that reads, "if you come close to this box, a man inside will stab you and then read the ingredients out loud from the side of a box of Pop Tarts. You see this sign, you understand what will happen if you approach this box yet you still feel the need to walk up and interact with the box. Now you are laying on the ground with a stab wound and you now have the knowledge needed to educate anyone on the ingredients of the average Pop Tart. You only have your self to blame here, for you saw the sign and you knew what would happen.
the sad thing is there will be people who just won't understand the meaning of this post
Honestly I would try an exchange. There are issues with the screen on these phones and u know its gonna bother u. Plus u paid good money for it so it shouldn't have the screen issue. I would exchange it.
Having dreams about phones? Ain't no body got time for that.

Some questions I have before I buy a OnePlus 3T

So I am planning on getting a 128 GB OnePlus 3T, but I have some questions.
How is a phone without a SD Card? All devices I have had so far have SD Card slots, now I store my images on there but on the OnePlus, there is no SD Card slot, so I will have to store my images on the phone, which makes me scared.
What if the phone would just die on me and I would have to reflash OxygenOS then the Data section containing my images would also be wiped? I backup my images using Google Photos but I prefer to also have the original image file, should I just make a backup on the images like every week?
And last question, I have heard that the included warranty is really bad and that it can be a little pricey when sending it to Germany for repairs, is that true?
I was in the same boat as you before I got my Oneplus 3T. All my previous phones had SD cards. I came from a 16GB S5 with a 32GB memory card running CM13. For that reason I opted to get the 128GB 3T. I have yet to try installing any custom Roms on my device but I love having all the extra storage space at my disposal.
I've used phones without an SD card slot for a while now. I honestly haven't missed it. Using google photos has been great, and then if you have to wipe the data partition of your device ever, if you use TWRP to do it, it doesn't wipe your photos or videos.
As for the warranty, I have no idea for your location, but I'm in the US and had to my warranty on my OnePlus 2. Things seemed to go about as smooth as most other companies. A couple of minor frustrations, but overall went pretty smoothly.
I purchased and received a 128GB OnePlus 3T (I'm writing this response on it actually!) and am absolutely loving it so far! I would say that this is one of my favorite devices I've ever owned, next to my OnePlus One!
How's the display in terms of quality vs QHD? And how's sound from the device?

I moved all my files from my old phone that was backed up to my PC a day before I got this and used send anywhere to send all my music and important photos etc to my new op3T I also purchased a USB C to USB A 64 GB just to make backups for that "just in case" but Google photos and drive are great for primary backups.

On a 5.5 device or below 1080p is sufficient for normal usage of modern mobile. Maybe not VR but I'm not interested in that yet, first generation of a new bit a of tech is a waste of money to me. But coming from a Z3+ and looking at my girlfriend's Note 4 I say the display is great, a lot better than my Sony in terms of contrast but equal in colour. I think Sony make some amazing IPS displays, it I has a more balanced colour than the Samsung even without turning on sRGB. Where sound goes being 100% stock headphones are louder than my old phone and the note. The quality of the audio is actually better than it too also a lot better than the note, have to use my Fiio to get "comfortable" listening experience on my Sony. There isn't any advanced audio settings like clear audio, ds xx etc but still clear , crisp and loud enough on 32 Ohm headphones. And the bottom firing speaker took me by surprise, it gets loud for notifications and ringtones. It has got some depth if watching some YouTube at higher volumes it get very high in treble depending on what's going on. Rounded up great screen for normal non VR use, great audio from both 3.5 and speaker (surprised myself) will also be trying USB audio soon in the future. For the price it is a steal tbh it is my first OP came from iPhone 4, Xperia Z3 and Z3+ while also using Samsung s4, note 4 and LG g5 for some periods. And this is my top most enjoyable experience's yet of any phone I have had the pleasure of using.
I will add this in as my opinion but this device slides into that "Nexus" void.

It's personal choice but I went for 128GB as I have a lot of Flac music files and take a lot of pictures and videos, now I can mess with RAW too. 128 GB just gives you that headroom for the future and never worrying about storage space.

This was the other day non stop use. Just now sitting at 70% 2h 43m SOT so average around 10% an hour when using it as a phone, YouTube, music streaming Tidal. Huge improvement over my Z3+ that I had to tailer use for as it got 3-4h SOT but heat was mental and didn't game much on it because of that and this 3T I can use in whatever way I want.

So it costs 521$ for me to get the 128 GB version, in your opinion is it worth it? And also what about the size (Coming from a S4 Mini with 4.3" screen)
If you have the money and are happy I would say go for it. My Z3+ was 5.15 but is the same surface are as the 3T so it wasn't as big as I thought you just get more screen than head and chin. It's thin and feels quality my first metal phone. Feels 10x better than the lg g5 as it has a plastic primer coat and easy to get about the screen. It is slippery though so I would advise a quality case, my go to make is spigen. And like I said quality it great I would recommend watching the jerryrig video on YouTube. It's actual sapphire on the camera
I had a 32gb note 5 that never even got half full in over 12 months. Obviously I saved a little cash and went with the 64. Mainly because when I selected 128 at checkout it looked like a longer wait. In reality I have no need for the extra 55GB of storage.
I have yet to kill the battery on my device in a day. I'm extremely expressed with the battery life so far.
One question
How much storage do you get in 128 GB version?

Does Shamu have a worthy successor yet ?!

Hiya tech-mates !
I'd love to have your opinion.
I just asked myself, if my (underestimated)beloved Shamu needs to be replaced tomorrow, for any reason, (hope he won't, at least few years)
which phone could be as good as N6 was (and still is) nowadays ?
I.e. our shamu is being old little by little but still in race yet imo..
Got it since 2 years from now, and the more time passes, the more I like N6 !
-32/64bits transition is in a good way and almost finished (flagships). I think new SoCs (even more powerful) are still not as efficient as SD805 is. (without filling RAM with useless data or using an 32bits-adaptator which waste ressources)
-Cameras are quite better now
-Fingerprint scanner is a classic feature now (if you need it)
-Stock ROM "outdated" and security patch ends soon
-better StB ratio (not that much)
IMO, there's no device yet which beat the Shamu considering overall characteristics. And buying a new one will make me loose some beloved features I guess (screen size/type/quality, awesome dualspeakers, software fluidity, xda ressources/ROMS, Qi, LED)
If I need to buy a new phone today, I'll surely take a brand new N6 but i'll think about waiting for a OP5 or maybe chinese devices P10+/Mi Mix2/Mi 6+.
Which one would you choose ? (do your own suggestions)
(excuse my english, he's dirty)
I would recommend either waiting for the OP5 or getting the OP3T. I used to own the N6 but it ended in a tragic fate. So I decided to get the OP3T. Love it! Super fast, great camera, great battery, I love the fingerprint scanner, and the notification LED. The only downfall IMO is the speaker. It can easily be covered up and block sound. Other than that I would definitely recommend the OP3T or the OP5 if it it any good

Pixel XL speaker is much weaker (hah). Clear but sounds muffled compared to the venerable Shamu. Also only one speaker so the only stereo is through the headphone jack. Other than that, the Marlin is nice.
I read an article recently that Nokia (Yeah, read that correctly) wants to push the Nexus line back into existence. Or at least as close as possible, replicating the Nexus experience of little to no bloatware, and fast updates. My N6 is chugging along just fine right now, but I hope that Nokia follows through, because that just might be my new phone..
I've been watching for one, but there just aren't a lot of options if you like larger phones. What I need to see...
5.5" minimum screen size. 16:9. Might have to reevaluate if the ratios change much more. 1080p or better.
AOSP builds supported, no locked bootloader.
Better RAM/CPU/storage specs than the N6.
SD card. I don't care if the phone comes with 1TB internal, I want the damn SD slot. The manufacturing cost is about 20 cents, just put it in.
Forward facing speakers that sound decent.
Decent reception on TMobile LTE bands. Ideally supporting all US carriers, but Sprint/VZW are annoying.
Ideally, TMobile WiFi calling enabled.
Ideally, 4000+ mAh battery or user removable so I can get a bigger battery.
Ideally, flat screen so I can use tempered glass screen protectors.
Max price $500 US.
Oh yeah, no spontaneous combustion.
Axon 7 is the only one close. Flat screen and battery are not there, but the price is nice and performance is good. AOSP builds are fully functional now, thanks to the devs over there.
I know it's not a nexus-killer, but I just ordered a Note 5 to replace my Nexus 6. There's nothing that quite matches the beauty of Samsung, plus I just miss the S-Pen. Plus it'll be just enough smaller, thinner, and lighter enough that it won't feel big and bulky in my hand, as well as it being nice and balanced unlike the N6 which is noticeably bigger and heavier on the top than on the bottom.
The only things I'll really miss of the N6 are 1) 100% carrier compatibility 2) Stereo front speakers (oh man, no phone beats these) and 3) plain stock os, although that's starting to lag behind on speed (even though it gets faster antutu than lineage). Anyway. I'm pretty excited. And again, definitely not a nexus-killer in any way, but the Note 5 just has things I value more than getting a vanilla experience.
Besides, if Google is going to turn Apple and make an iphone-clone and also make it so I have to be unrooted/locked anyway in order to pass safetynet, I might as well move back to what's comfortable to use. Just my 2c.

N6 debloated, even encrypted, still runs everything perfectly smoothly and still have one of the best stereo dual speakers.. Wow, didn't know that phone, looks great. Stock ROM excepted, he really looks like a N6 "successor" (not really sure that SD820+4Go RAM+64bitsOS runs that much better than SD805+3Go RAM+32bitsOS - your opinion ?)(I don't trust benchmarks)
Heard something about alternative ROMs with him ? Will look after some xda forums

Money! They want us to use Android pay. Banks don't like rooting; fear of fraud.
As the Moto X Pure was a nice update of what I loved about the N6, I was hoping that the 2017 Moto X would continue that line. Unfortunately, from the leaks we have seen, it looks more like an HTC phone or even an iPhone than the logical continuation of the N6. But the price points that MotoLenova are hitting are really tempting. I even think the G5 Plus would make a nice phone at that price. I'll see what they eventually release with the Moto X before I decide. I've just gotten to a point where the Pixels of the world are too expensive for what you get.
But like all of us here in the N6 forum, I am still rocking my Shamu.

SD is one of those things people seem to love or hate. There's no one right way, but there's also nothing saying you have to put a card in there if there's a slot. But if there's not a slot, you have no choice. As it's tiny, costs almost nothing, and harms nothing to have it, why not? Then everyone can have it however they like. Those digital packrats can have tons of storage, those who prefer not to have one just don't install one. The Axon 7 implementation is particularly nice, the SIM tray is a dual SIM and one of them can be an SD or a SIM. It can even be both, but that requires some modifications to the SD cards. IMO the only people to gain anything from it not being there are device manufacturers (sell overpriced higher capacity versions), and cloud providers trying to sell you storage.
Axon 7 is really the only device I could see buying right now. The LG G6 looks nice, but LGs history with bootloops and lack of service has me avoiding them. AOSP is not possible at the moment though, so G6 is out.
OnePlus 3T looks nice, screen is a bit small and no SD.
I really liked my Note 3, but Samsung is on a lockdown thing right now, and I won't buy a device I can't actually own. He who controls the software controls the device.
None have the removable battery, which would be nice, and all are a bit small on battery for me, but I can live with that. Nothing is perfect. I'm in no hurry at the moment, Shamu and the devs here are treating me well.
