[Q] Screen brightness - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo Q&A, Help & Troublesh

I hope the screen is nice and bright in sunlight. Anyone have any idea what kind of screen it might be. Currently have a Galaxy S3 that is terrible outdoors. Thanks,

Well, they use sammys displays. And I just read some were that Samsung never sales there latest and greatest. Typically it's one generation older. My guess is just screen will be very similar to the s5 with a 2k display

[Q] Galaxy S (S-Amoled) V.S. Nexus S (S-LCD)

Hi
My friend wants to buy new phone. He is confused between Galaxy S (S-Amoled) and Nexus S (S-LCD).
The price & specifications are almost the same.
The most important things for him are the screen clarity and the touch sensitivity.
He thought about Nexus S (S-Amoled) but it's more expensive than S-LCD and can't buy it.
So, Which one of those is better in the screen clarity and the touch sensitivity? Galaxy S (S-Amoled) or Nexus S (S-LCD)?
Both have good displays, though the Galaxy S might have the upper edge in quality, the Nexus has a contour glass which is better in ergonomics, added it's a Google phone so it'll get updated almost instantly

You mean the screen quality of Galaxy S is better?
And in touch sensitivity and response, which one is better?
Nexus S have not cartridge for an external card, but Galaxy S have it...Its pretty different.

Yeah, I know that. But my friend doesn't care about storage. He says that 16 gb internal memory is enough.
OLED hands down IMHO, better colour and no back light sucking up power!
Amoled VS SLCD
Amoled - better black, more saturated colours, too vivid for some people
SLCD - worse black, natural colours, worse contrast
I think the best is to see those screens and then make a decision
I saw some videos and I noticed the amoled is too much better than lcd. Lcd screen is too bright and the colors are bad.
I'll choose amoled for sure.
Thanks everyone.
I do have both I9000 (galaxy S, S-Amoled) and I9003 (Galaxy SL, S-LCD) Aside from the black and viewing angles, its not much difference. Personally if your friend dont really care bout the extra sd slot and display differences,Nexus S seems like a good choices too Nexus S at least has a LED flash for it's camera.

IMHO Nexus S.
Google Phone and camera with flash LED but if you're asking about the two screens .. it's not easy
There are the differences :
Galaxy S
+ SAMOLED screen
+ Memory expansion slot
+ FM Radio
+ 3G video call support
+ HD Video recording (hopefully this would be added later for Nexus S)
Nexus S
+ Google Support
+ Flash light for Camera
Though Galaxy S have several advantages over Nexus S, Google’s software support is a big plus point for Nexus S, you’ll be sure to always have the latest and greatest. On the other hand Samsung’s official firmware support is very poor, however they have shown some improvement over the past few months. They recently released 2.3.3, but whether or not we'll get any future updates is not clear. Picture quality of SAMOLED is better, but SLCD is not too bad either. If your friend don’t care about the hardware advantages of Galaxy S then getting a Nexus S is not a bad idea. If screen is a big concern, then why don't you ask him to go check out both and compare ?

[Q] How bright is the screen?

I like every aspect of nexus 6
but i'm a bit worried about the brightness of the screen
since AMOLED are kind of infamous for not able to use outdoor
I'm guessing the screen will be similar to Moto X 2014
Anyone who own the phone, can you please share the experience for using the phone under bright sun?

That's the important question. This year's AMOLED's (Galaxy S5, Note 4, Tab S) were very bright... but last year's AMOLED's (Galaxy S4).. not so much. Note 3 was fine however.
some review says moto X 2014 has poor outdoor visibility
and according to phonearena screen measurement, the moto X only has a maximum brightness of 385 nits
Now i'm seriously worried about the N6.....
I will accept anything higher than 450 nits, but 385 nits is just way too low
btw, I always never understood why maximum brightness is not part of the standard specs, it's an important factor, sometimes it's more important than pixel density or color saturation
While I will take all the brightness I can get, I have only struggled a few times with my S4 outdoors. I just don't use my phone all that much in full sunlight. Maybe check a football score during my kid's soccer game. Not exactly mission critical, but I guess it would be nice if it were easier. I certainly wouldn't give up the superior blacks the other 99.99% of the time. But given the awesome screens on the latest Samsungs, we should be able to have our cake and eat it, too.

It's about this bright [emoji295]️[emoji295]️[emoji295]️
Its brightness is 270 nits (quite dim when you go by the numbers)
While its 850+ on my z3!
I guess I won't be selling my z3 for a n6 after all!
As with most single specs, the luminance in nits only tells part of the story. I'll wait to see what the N6 screen looks like in full sun before making a final decision.

Very true. Amoled screen have very different reflective properties when compared to an LCD IPS screen. The outdoor viewing experience could and should actually be really good based on all the reviews.

Based on reviews the screen looks less vivid, less sharp and more dull than the Note 4. The visibility is less also; many reviewers claim the screen has great PPI but overall is not amazing. No surprises here - Samsung saves the best screens for themselves and everyone else gets rejects. For that reason I would've used an IPS display, like the iPhone 6+ (which has great visibility in sunlight, sharp and good colours).

If that's the case then Google clearly chose the ambient display (which requires amoled) over an IPS display. The note 4 arguably has the best screen in the world and we don't don't know if Google could get their hands on the iPhone 6 display. Maybe they tried and still couldn't get it.
Google can still calibrate the display properly. We'll just have to wait and see.

We can also, you know...Make calibrations ourselves as well once Custom Kernels make their rounds..
If colour reproduction is an issue we should have little to worry if we can modify it in due time.
Here's how to find out - go look at one yourself before purchase.

You are going to have to post a source for that, because I dont believe the Z3 has 850nit brightness at all. A quick Google search showed nothing of the sort either.

i am happy this was answered so i didn't have to make a post just to make sure. i know i have options for dpi and auto brighness controls on my gs2. but i have to wonder why they set it so low in the first place? was it for battery savings? is it because the reflectivity is so good that it didn't need to be higher? is it because it will burn out the organics? if the gs3, 290 nits, was good enough to see outside then i guess this one will be also. it just sucks that it is so low. and i don't know if i would want to trust a kernel that raised it.

PhoneArena state the Nexus 6 is 270nits.
& the Nexus 5 is 485nits
Yet, I'm pretty sure we've seen both phones on Max brightness next to each other with the Nexus 6 being brighter.
In fact, every video I've seen with both the Nexus 6 & Note 4 has shown the Nexus to have the brighter screen with much better whites.

Every video I've seen with both phones together.
If the Nexus 6 is supposed to only be 270nits, how is this possible?
I've also seen an image of the Nexus 5 & 6 together on Max brightness with the 6 being brighter.
Nexus 5 is 485 nits so PhoneArenas 270nits claim makes no sense at all.
Even in PhoneArenas own video, the Nexus looks brighter than the Note 4, easily visible during browsing & the video benchmark etc.

It's funny because when I was playing with the Note 4 in a Sprint store I was surprised to learn that the screen was at full brightness. It didn't seem all that bright to me.

Amoled screen similar in generation to the X?

Is there any evidence that the screen on the N6 will be any different from the generation shipped with the X? All indications point to the Moto using a previous generation Samsung display. I can't help but think that the N6 may have been able to score the latest generation due solely to its size?

Can you link these "all indications"? All I've seen is a bunch of speculation regarding this, coming from those who are detracting from the N6 because they can't afford it, or think it's too big.

If anything, I think they will be new panels because the panels that are needed by the Nexus 6 was not needed in previous phones until now (5.9" and rez).

Well they can use previous generation AMOLED displays. I don't think resolution and size have an effect on the generation of AMOLED. For example, the Galaxy Alpha uses Samsung's latest AMOLED technology even though it has a 4.7 inch 720p display.
I am hoping we get a brighter and a longer lasting display. Burn-in is such a real issue, as is the fact that LCD displays are usually brighter.
I dont get this supposed burn in issue....i have had every galaxy phone with absolutly no issues with the screen. I have had my note 3 for a year now and again the screen is just as beautiful as day one. Sure if you put some abstract image on full brightness on screen for 6 months straight you might get a issue...but in actual real world usage...no such thing

The amoled burn in issue is still alive on the GS4 we had 3 and all have had it to differing degrees. I have no idea about the gs5 or note4 generation panels. I'd wager they would have at the least some kind of image retention though. Just a educated guess. The latest LG oled TV panels have image retention issues (glance at avs forums). Image retention, which looks like like burn in, but it can be rectified (like with plasma TVs). Burn is permanent so maybe this is a case of semantics. Think status bar battery icon. It is there 24/7. Maybe you just don't notice it or panel to panel discrepancies show more or less issues.
Having said all that you have to really look for it on our GS4's and its certainly NOT a deal breaker imo

S5 mini and true black amoled

Hi,
I'm planning on buying a s5 mini, but i'm wondering if the display has true blacks when in a totally dark room? I really like this on my Galaxy s4 & note 3. My galaxy s4 mini does not have true blacks, there is always a faint gray glow when in complete darkness.
Yes, it's AMOLED, what means true blacks.
So you would think right? But on my old s3 and on my s4 mini this is not the case! I load up a true black wallpaper, check in complete darkness, and there is a faint glow. Not so on my note 3, not so on my s4. i guess this has something to do with different generations of screens. So i was wondering if the s5 mini IS capable of showing true black in complete darkness.
Well, I use a black wallpaper in my G800H and it looks black to me, using auto brightness in low light or full brightness it looks like the same black to my eyes. It's my first AMOLED phone so I cannot compare with other devices, and I think a photo using another phone won't help much due to the sensor properties in common digital cameras, so... Good luck.
Thanks, i will give it a go then!
For me, it is full black. Just tested.

Having seen you on the s4 mini forums i'll give you some advice with this phone. GPS probably wont work without hardware modifications and even then it wont be anywhere near as accurate as the s4 mini. also there is a slight delay when pushing the power or home button before the screen turns on from touchwiz to AOSP, its mildly annoying. other than that if you can find a good s5 mini its a decent upgrade in screen resolution but camera quality is a bit lower. ultimately I came back to my s4 mini as it just does everything perfect.
Thanks, i didn't know about those gps problems. That is an issue for me, thanks a lot, i'll consider this!
Do you have the regular s4 mini, or the VE (9195i) version?

Amoled burn still exists??

I'm wondering whether led burning is still a problem. What is your experience on your amoled device? Are the new ones burn-free? Even after 2 years of use?
I think, it doesn't exist now.
Amoled burn-in still exists, but advancements in both the technology and production process has made it occur less often for consumers.
There are still other issues to think of other than burn-in that still exists in amoled displays today. Right now, Samsung produce the best amoled displays.

The use of a pentile matrix (Samsung amoled) for brighter display and lower power usage at the cost of image clarity. Colours are usually over saturated but can be adjusted to your liking.
